I've seen discussions here about running a voip client on the tilt, but I've not yet found exactly what kind of service provider is needed for this.
I have packet8 voip service at home. Can I configure a tilt client to make/receive calls over that service? If so, what info do I need from packet 8 to do so?
Or, I have a gizmo account that my grandcentral forwards to. Gizmo only seems to have a java based client for the phone, which isn't working very well for me.
Basically what I'm wanting is calls from my grand central number to get to my tilt via wifi, since I work underground where cell signal isn't available, but we have solid wifi coverage. I'm not worried about being able to make calls.
What's the best way to accomplish this, and can I do it without having to pay for another provider?
VOIP, Voice Over I P, requires an internet connection. As far as I know you don't need a provider. You need an internet connection and a client. Skype is pretty popular but there are others. Check out the SEARCH link in my signature, below. Search for Skype, VOIP, and similar terms and you will get the answer to your question.

How could you not have a provider? Something has to transfer calls from the POTS network where the call originates to VOIP. Last I knew, skype charged for 'skype-in' to have a phone number associated with your skype account for calls to come in to.
I have already searched for and read VOIP related posts, as I indicated in the OP. None that I found addressed configuration of packet8 service, which is what I'm ideally looking for. Hopefully someone else will be able to help answer the question, rather than suggesting something I've already tried without success already.

Packet8 is a non-standard VOIP provider. I believe you will need to download, install, and use their client. And that'll cost you over and above your existing service. Worse, I don't think it will get you what you want. Appears that you can make calls, but I'm not sure if you can receive them. I'm not a Packet8 user so I'm not certain of that. But since you are, I'd recommend contacting them to find out what's possible with their service using a mobile device.

The Gizmo5 mobile client is Java based. It will run like crap if it all on your device. More bad news, it's primarily an IM app and it does not do pure VoIP.

I use Voipstunt, and I'm able to make and receive calls on my device. However you do have to pay for the service. And typically it will cost a little more if you want a dedicated number so you can receive POTS calls. In many (most) cases calls between SIP devices / VOIP software are free. Skype is probably the most common example of this.
I'm sure you're busy, as we all are, but as you have time you really should peruse this INCREDIBLY long but educational thread on VOIP. In a nutshell here's what's needed to do get what you're asking about. You will need a VOIP provider (probably NOT Packet8, I'm afraid), a soft phone application for Windows Mobile (I like SJPhone or X-Lite), and if you want to receive from a POTS line you will also need an incoming number from your VOIP provider (usually called a VOIP-In number). Hope this helps you a little. Good luck!

I use FRING http://www.fring.com/ It also handles other thinkgs such as Skype. I had a previous Skype account which is free obviously. Then all you do is load Fring and then you can put in your Skype account and it will upload all your Skype contacts. You can then select one of these and hit call. You are now making a VOIP call over your phones data stream to your friends computer. But if you are wanted to make VOIP calls to landlines actual home telephones or cell phones then that will cost you money and you will have to load skype credits an what not. But if you have an unlimited data plan (which most people do if you have a pocket pc) then you can just call people on your buddy list like if you were talking from your desktop. This way if your friend is online you can talk all you want and not use any of your regular minutes cuz its all working off your data plan. You must have a 3G connection though or it will not be fast enough.

First of all, THANK YOU for your very detailed post. It is on point, and addresses my questions, and that's very much appreciated.
I did want to elaborate just a bit on the Gizmo option though. The only reason I specifically mention Gizmo is because that's the provider that grandcentral says it works with. Is it possible to use a good windows mobile voip client with gizmo service? If so, that would be ideal, since I could continue to receive calls to grand central, without having to pay for a seperate sip /voip-in service.

Again, thanks for the info. I'll definitely check out that thread. I'm fine with using a different provider if need be, but somewhat hesitant just because calls would be going from pots to grandcentral to pots dialing the voip number, back to voip to get to my phone. (at least, I assume since GC only supports gizmo voip numbers, that they are actually forwarding to pots for any other calls outbound.) That just seems like a lot of transitions, which is why the gizmo would be my first choice if it can work with a better voip client.

Unfortunately, 3G isn't available around here, but as I said, I'm really looking for this to work over a wifi connection anyway, which should definitely be fast enough to handle the calls.
I'll check into fring, hopefully it can support the gizmo service as well!

I've seen ads for the Mobiletalk service form packet8 before, but unless I'm mistaken it's intended for getting voip rates on international calls, not for everyday voip use for domestic calls. I'm downloading the app now to see if it can be used in that way, but if it does what I need I'll be surprised.

Did you not read my post? It is a free pocket pc softphone that you can use with any SIP/VoIp service, as long as you can get their network settings. As with the post earlier in the thread, VoipStunt provides a very reasonable service, and they provide settings for BYOD(bring your own device). You will find it here http://www.voipstunt.com/en/sipp.html But mainly you need a windows mobile softphone, http://www.nch.com.au/talk/index.html From there you have many more options on what service you use. Also try http://www.broadvoice.com/ they have many flavours of service.;-)
I am not sure this will do the job for you but google wengophone. They have a soft phone that will work on your Tilt. I have used it to make outgoing calls and works good. I have not tried it for incoming as I think my ATA would pick the incoming up first. All you need is your login, PW, proxie and domain server name. If you have those for Gizmo it should work.
Let us know if it does.
FWIW, I'm 75 or so pages into the 'log educational thread' mentioned above. Anyone who's starting on that thread, feel free to read from the beginning, but don't start installing stuff or mucking with settings until you've read all the way through. There are multiple revisions of the cabs and files needed, and it seems that the original posts don't get updated with the new info.
So far, my voip is working, using the windows mobile 6 client, with gizmo, so yes, it can be done, but it's only working on speakerphone currently. Still reading for more info.
I've just summarized a bit of what I've gathered so far from that long 'educational' thread pointed out by hotmail, on page 135 of the same thread. Hope that helps others!
I have recently thought of leaving sprint because of there embarrassing services and was wondering if i can still use my hero with out a service provider??? if there was a program i could run on it?? I have so much money into my phone and would hate to not use it. i believe i can use the wifi part for data not sure?? but i want to make cals n stuff is there and type of hack i can use i am using fresh toast2.1. with a radio update. Thank You for the help. Sprint truely does not know how to run a company and man i bought my phone for full price!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE

The phone doesn't just stop powering on after you cancel your service.
There are some illegal things you could do to bring it to another carrier... you can always use Data on wifi. I have read of some people using it for a simple PDA/Media player when they are done with it.
I for one am 100% happy with sprints customer service and cell service. Updating the phone could have happened quicker, but hey what do you do.
They have yet to do me wrong. Best cell company I have ever worked with and a heck of a good price.
When I left Verizon and told them I was going to Sprint and told them the price, the retentions department didn't even put up a fight because they knew they couldn't touch Sprints price.

You may be able to use Google Voice over Wifi to place calls, but I am not sure. I doubt you would be able to recieve them since the registered phone number would be disconnected.
And my tethering with Spint is 3 times faster than it was with Verizon, and I acutally paid verizon the extra 15 a month for it....huge waste.
you could use skype to make calls over wifi
otherwise you will just have a PDA

That's a no-go Ghost Ryder. I'm currently service-less and Google Voice won't route over Wifi for calls, SMS will however. Now, if you set up the proper SIP accounts, you can use your Google Voice account through those SIPs to make and receive calls via Sipdroid. Google will pull up how-to's.
As for those lesser than legal matters, that's what I'm about to do myself. Ever done it first hand?

Nope, but it doesn't look too complicated from what I have seen.
Depending on who you flash too MMS may recieve but not send, and Data may/not work.
Seems like some poeple are using better cut to route proxy info stuff through opera to achieve data.
I went through the same type of thing when I went from my touch pro to the hero. I still wanted to use my touch pro as a dedicated gps since at the time there werent any decent ones available on android. anyways, I had then went and set up a similar thing for making calls via the wifi using GV, sipgate, and I believe it was fring....I forget. Basically I would go on my phone browser to google voice, initiate the call from the website, then fring would ring on my touch pro and finish connecting the call. lawl, I just set up my brother's fiance's phone to do that since she is going to Germany for the summer this weekend...so she and my bro can talk for free (though she needs wifi which her dorm over there will have)
Ya, I definitely hear ya about Sprint.....it's funny, I get so so service in my house, yet about 2 miles down the road is a sprint store and as soon as I pull out onto the main drag BAAAAAM insta full signal >.<

Here is a quick how to for the easiest way to accomplish the free calls thing via wifi. It's a little dated but the info is still good me thinks. The only thing is that you'd have to go to google.com/voice on your phone and (thankfully having all contacts synced to google) initiate the call/sms from there. To get it so you can actually dial out from the phone would require ALOT more configuring and can be annoying. So try this first, make sure it works and then if you want to get more jiggy with it, then figure out the whole "SIPSORCERY.com" thingy.

Thank You i am going to try and run the sipdroid and google voice idea i kinda wish there was a app too pick up a wi fi signal with increase strenght so i can use my phone everywhere instead of just home and local buisnesses lol. If you have any ideas to pick up further signals or wifi everywhere let me know also if you have and more ideas on the talk for free let me know thank you.
no dice there my friend haha, here is a thought. think of the phone as a cordless phone for home also, just keep in mind that the audio quality isn't going to be 100%. There will be a delay, there will be some compression artifacts, but hey at least its a free alternative to home phone right?
EDIT: being in a strong wifi environment will DEFINITELY help with quality as it has more umph to work with
i noticed when i read the how to guide u posted thaqt airplane mode will disable the cdma radio did it work so i can keep my battery lol?

Well I'm actually not switching carriers. I was on a family plan, then a divorce hits, and everyone is refusing to pay the delinquent bill - point being, my phone is tied to that account and can't be used on any other account until the bill is paid. So, I'm hoping to sprinkle some voodoo magic on my Hero, then slap it on a new account with the same carrier.
I dont see why you dont convert the phone over to cricket service (if you have it) and just pay 35 dollars for talk and web. I mean minus well right?
I've got a G2 and the OTA that was pushed at the beginning of November gave me a much needed function for wifi calling when I am in Manila, which is every couple months. My coworker has the Galaxy S and is in Manila now and wants to know if his phone has the functionality. I haven't been able to find anything on it being part of the stock functions, so I'm asking here. His phone isn't rooted or hacked in any way, so I'm just wondering if it is something he would have received an update for, or if it would have to be rooted first? Thanks in advance? I tried a search, but wasn't able to find what I'm looking for. If you know of a thread I can send him to, that would be great too. Thanks again!
Can anyone help me on this? I don't have the phone near me, so I can't verify the settings. I wouldn't ask if I was able to find out any other way, but searches aren't coming up with anything. Too many posts on wifi to find something on wifi calling.
I don't think there are any stock apps that let you do wifi voice calling. However, you may want to give skype a try. I managed to get it working with voice but there is no video calling yet. Maybe in the future.
apparently the new froyo build being pushed or the tmobile vibrrant has a wifi calling app.. can anyone get it so we can get it working on our galaxy s'

Try "Tango" app (your coworker has to install "Tango" aswell).
Try CSipSimple, and sign a voip plan, like justvoip. Setup your sip number and enjoy, works very well here.

First of all, I don't know where to fit this post, since I'd believe it's more gingerbread related than Nexus, but on the Android topic only hacking/development/themes are mostly supported, so I don't know how appropiated would it be.
So, here it goes. I'm living in Hong Kong, and recently moved to a new apartment, where GSM coberture reception is poor to say it kindly. However we have a properly working cable provider, with internet access, and a wifi router configured. So my idea would be, as soon as the mobile detects the wifi, change into wifi mode, and send the calls through voip.
Could I still keep my phone number? I mean, if somebody calls, I'd like the call to be sent through voip, so I wouldn't loose coberture.
I THINK google voice does this kind of stuff, but I'm not sure...Never was activated for me. Well, to be honest, now it doesn't give me the "we are currently working with several providers from different countries" ****, it actually lets me in...to a very limited menu where I can't do anything
Anyway, I can't figue out how to set my number to work, so I guess it's still disabled somehow. In the meantime, I'd like to make this VoIP redirection work, is there an easy way? How would you guys do it?

Hey Devs I could really use your help in this matter. Here is the deal, I would like to find a way to be able to make free phone calls using my Captivate while deployed to Iraq/Kuwait. I will be leaving soon and would like some help with a "be all" solution. I use ATT but I don't think that really matters for what I am wanting to accomplish. I have searched all over the internet and I see a bunch of way to do this...in USA. I can't seem to find a way that will work in Iraq. I have tried to use a combo of Sipgate + Google Voice but I read somewhere that google voice only works in USA and the steps that are used appear to be for a past version of the phone app and i can't seem to get it to work correctly. I don't have a lot of time to try and figure this out because I leave very soon. If anybody knows of the steps needed to allow free cell phone calls over Wifi in the middle east, please help me out.
I know I can use Skype and that is the preferred way but that means that my all my friends and family will have to be defendant on a computer or a smart phone. I don't want that, I would like to be able to call any number on any phone over Wifi.

Skype can call mobile and land lines. You just need to have credit. I know its not free. But there really is no free way to make calls over wi-fi.
**Edit: at least not any good means.
Google Voice only really works to US *numbers*, but the free inbound you get from Sipgate One is a US number, so it works.
The only problem is latency and variable call quality, but if you're half a world away people should be understanding...
For apps I suggest Xinlu's Google Voice Callback and CSipSimple.
Ummm ive been to kuwait and the wifi over there is not good enough to be making calls on ur phone via wifi best bet is skype or other services and or just get a local sim card over there and make cell calls and also u should just use the free dsn lines they have over there.
