I have a captivate unlocked on cognition 2.2. Is there any way to ensure my phone doesn't relock? I know theres no way to get the code now that I am on froyo, but is there anything I can do to prevent locking?
Don't flash an I9000 rom.
So if i always flash a captivate rom i should be good right?
And att couldnt send out a update that locks phone as some are officially unlocked right?

I believe that'd all true.

copy all files in your /efs partition just to be safe - you can always put them back if you get relocked.
Im on froyo so i dont have the code. Can i actually replace the efs folder and ill be unlocked again?

Only if you copied it from your 2.1 efs folder before you flashed

The code you unlocked it with the first time will still work, but I suppose you didn't save it.
Yup i didnt think to save it. I have flashed multiple firmwares and ot seems to keep the unlock though.

I am planning on putting my phone to stock software by using this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
However since i live in New Zealand and have my phone unlocked so i can use it, will doing this lock my phone so it wont work with my network?
Thanks,
Doc
I believe it will but you will or should be able to unlock again
Is there any application i can use to easily unlock it? Or can I just copy my current nv_data.bin and then copy it back on and it will unlock?
Thanks,
doc

Unsure about just copying files
thanks. im gonna try it all now. ill reply soon
No, as far as I've done. I have flashed to stock many times, and my phone is still unlocked.

No it shouldnt
Hyperthetically if someone (not me) deleted all the root files using root explorer, would they all be replaced after a stock rom was installed using odin or is the only way to get root files like efs back a nand backup?

I am not at all sure, but from what I can see online it seems that the /efs folder (and thus the holy IMEI number) are NOT restored by flashing roms or reloading general backups. That is likely the reason why it is strongly suggested to take a copy of your efs folder and save it somewhere secure before doing ANYTHING copacetic to your phone.
You (oh sorry, I mean your "friend") may be better off flashing to stock and then searching here for ways to change/set your IMEI number. Perhaps that will work.
Good luck.
Ok what I'm trying to ask is if I start playing with mods like root file mods that edit system files like the battery icon mod. Will a flash to stock rom on odin restore it back to normal or will the system files be forever changed? I think that is abit clearer.

Anyone?

I would keep a back of all those files just to be safe

I agree . But I'm more interested in the actual answer. Is the bootloader even stored in the root. And would it even be possible to restore everything just by pasting a backup of those files back?

Pro's?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
You can't **** up your bootloader with root explorer. You can destroy your efs though. As long as this is backed up everything else is restorable.
Thanks. So how would one go about backing up their boot loader or is that a mute point since the phone won't boot without one anyway? And if your bootloader did get screwed say from a bad flash and you couldn't get into download mode is that whats considered a hard brick and would a jig allow you to fix this?

I have my phone unlocked.but my IMEI is corrupted but is working good so far I have network and I havE a backup of my efs folder on my pc. everytime I try to replace it with root explorer I overwrite the efs folder but It doesnt, how can I replace my original efs folder instead of my current efs folder which is corrupted????
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
how did you unlock it?
did you use an app?
does that app have the option to restore original?
probably does...
yes I used helroz app and I have two backups the original one and the helroz app backup but for some reason I paste my efs backup using root explorer but it doesnt overwrite it instead i have two folders with the same name.

well if you read the words in the app
the one .bak ISNT a backup. it is a necessary system file.
it says so in the app.
also you cant replace the efs backup like that with root explorer.
it doesnt work like that.
the app from herloz
has an option to restore your original files and re-lock the phone
USE IT!!
how do i know???
i re-wrote the english translation for him~!
so i relock my phone and i get my imei back?? I need it unlock because I use a diferent sim not att. what if I flash stock using odin??? I need my phone unlocked 'cause I dont live in the USA!!!

well re-locking the phone will restore your backup!
then re-unlock it using the PROPER code method. not the backdoor file swap method.
use [APP]SuperOneClick v1.9.1
to get the unlock code. (second tab in program says "captivate")
although that app didnt change my imei when i used it months ago, but had no choice the rogers captivates dont have the code stored in the phone, you must get it from rogers. but the att phones have the code hidden inside. it can be found and used.
i restore my backup and nothing still unlocked and corrupted IMeI

well every once and a while your network will check imei s and you will just stop working... might want to check out herloz thread.. ask for help,
he knows more about the imeis than most of us here.
we dont mess with em unless we need to. lol

I like your description of the 1st method TR, but on the ATT Cappy refurb I got that was upgrade imaged at the factory, OneClick & SGS Unlock only pulled fffff.
Two I earlier upgraded myself both responded to SGS Unlock as did the post upgrade new phone they sent me that probably never saw 2.1. On number 4 of the 4 I've handled, backdoor was the only way.
cool good to know about the refurbs.
i got fffff as well did the switch with the app and its held up through rom flashes att one click rogers stocks gingerbread. still unlocked and correct imei. older version of app though..
though every odd person it happens to. it has happened before in his thread.
I'm trying to update to official 2.2 to return the phone to warranty but its not updating. The progress bar gets to about 3/4 of the way then it says the upgrade could not be completed. Anyone know why?

did you get the phone with stock 2.2? If not I would just flash back to stock jf6 as that erases any trace of custom ROMs (from what I've read).. and even if the phone came with 2.2 it may not matter if they get it back and it's 2.1. Beats me, just a thought.

They don't keep track of what version the phone was on when it was sent. Simply use Odin3 one clck downloader and it will clear everything that would void your waranty.

wtf.. help? giving my mom this phone as a present.. but I need to use tmobile sim not at&t.. any help would be appreciated her bday is tomorrow
U will probably have to flash back to Stock Firmware in order to Unlock it. And then once it is unlocked...it will continue to be no matter what u flash or Odin, etc.
Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz in the Google Play Store is what has been used and recommended by many.
And also u can only get the Edge on T-mobile network with the Captivate...but u may already know this.

Click 4-2ndtwin's helpful links in his sig and there you will find some great one clicks he built. both Odin and hemdall and both with and without boot loaders.
I used this app
I was able to get around that using the application below on my CM10 captivate and then other sims worked on it without problem.
