[Q] Busybox Issue - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Installed busybox from market yesterday. Problem is, I see exact copies of busybox and other binaries in /system/bin as well as /system/xbin folders. Is it fine if i leave it that way or should i delete it from one of the folders ??

i only install the busybox that is compatible with Titatium Backup
some busybox makes it not compatible when TB runs

Thank u for replyin... Bt wat i actually want to know is where does busybox gets installed ?? In /system/xbin OR /system/bin ?? Coz somehow I have busybox and all other binaries in both the folders.

Question: Busybox installed twice, harmful?

hi, quick question.
i originally installed busybox via busybox installer in /system/xbin
then, because openVPN requires busybox installed in /system/bin, i did that too.
now busybox installer tells me that i have more than one copy of busybox installed (surprise), but doesn't tell me whether that is good or bad. i also do not see any detrimental effects at this moment.
so should i just keep it like it is?
if i should uninstall one busybox, how should i do this?
thanks
have u tried busybox (installer) from market, think it will give u option to uninstall if it finds several copies..

it doesn't
it says it will remove existing versions, but i guess only if you overwrite (means, install over previous version in same folder.
i have it in two folders /system/bin and /system/xbin
should be easy to delete it manually from xbin, i have only to files there
ipctool & vfp-crasher
reboot

but i dont think it matters, i had several busybox files as well, decided to remove all except in /bin folder..

[Q] How to update BusyBox?

Heya!
So I wanted to update my BusyBox to the latest version (for 4cylturbo).
At first I thought using BusyBox.
The app said I don't have busybox on my system which is weird because I used Shaaan's root when I moved to JB, and I also checked in the /system/bin and /system/xbin, both locations have busybox in them
So my question is what would be the proper way to update BusyBox? And why do I have BusyBox in both locations?
EDIT:
So I managed to find why I have Busybox in both locations. I am using right now ikaster17's Pure Vanilla ROM and in his ROM both locations have the BusyBox binray.

For me, I usually check where the busybox installed first whether xbin/bin using this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.busybox.installer&feature=search_result
Then I use the busybox app by stericson same as your link to install the latest version. Install the latest version in the same place as the old ones, then use the app given in the link above again to verify your new busybox version. Hope this helps.
You have two busybox because the app installed your latest version not in the same place as the old original location. You have to check and choose it yourself before installing a new busybox version.
I tried the app you suggested, it said that I have it installed in the xbin folder, but it couldn't identify the version number I am using.
The Rom is what installed it in both locations, should I manually delete the one in bin and then install the new version in xbin?

I think when you installed new version, the old ones is deleted. You can try that or just flash back the rom. I ended up the same as you before. I wiped all and flash back the rom then update busybox.
So I finally got some time to do a nandroid backup and install.
At first I installed in the bin location, did a reboot, tested it out and it worked flawlessly.
I then used my file explorer again to check the files in both locations: in the bin directory I saw the newer version, but in the xbin directory I still saw the previous version, so I installed again this time in the xbin directory, did another reboot and this time both locations had the new versions.
By the way, the app still doesn't see my current installed version, so I am guessing there's a problem with that feature...
The other app you suggested isn't helpful, only used the busybox app.
Thanks for your advice!
Seems to be working with no problem

Yeah, that app doesn't show current version. That's why I used the other one to check the version. See ss below.
For me also the other app didn't show current version

LOL maybe because there's 2 locations with busybox.

[Q] Busybox and its interaction with my phone

I originally wanted to use Lucky Patcher, main reason why I rooted my phone, howeve, it popped out an error message about BusyBox missing from the system (it still kinda sorta worked, but not really). I've tried installing BusyBox with 5 different installers, some say tahat they can't be installed and I should change a direction (even a non-system partition scares them). One app has installed the busybox, but another one can't see it, neither can Lucky Patcher. Also, no means of making /system/ writeable work (special apps, ES File Explorer, Total Commander, File Commander).
Wat the hell should I do to make my BusyBox installation existent, solid and visible? (and also get an actual ability to make that /system/ writeable).
I'm using Sony Xperia Z1 C6903 on Android 4.4.4, build number 14.4.A.0.157
Is ur phone rooted? Cuz busybox installers need root access to write to /system

Root is making your device able to write to /system/ ... Probably your device wasn't rooted correctly..Try to download-install an app that checks if your device is rooted...
If it's not try to root again using the latest guides

How remove the Blotwares STEP by STEP

With the intention of helping all those who have difficulties in removing blotwares even with programs like TITANIUM and others..
Here is a small step by step that I did to remove the blotwares..
STEP - 1
You install the app available in the playstore, called System app remover Https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en_US
1.1)
You need to install the app available in the playstore, called Termux Https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.termux&hl=en_US
1.2)
grants root access to the 2 apps.
STEP - 2
Perform apk removal With the Termux application open,
you enter as root
-> su (enter as root)
You should now allow to modify the directory system
-> mount -o remount, rw -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system
Now you need to get into the "System app remover" application and pick up the APP directory you want to remove.
-> rm -r [DIRECTORY]
Now you need to return the directory system to read only, 'ro', to prevent malicious activities
-> mount -o remount, ro -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system
Restart your phone and you can see that the app is no longer on your device.
NOTE: If you can not go back to read only, after the system reboot you will be able to.
My mobile got much faster and with no crashes after deleting these apps ...
I had difficulty removing blotwares from a rom I downloaded that is available on this link for ZUK Z2 PRO
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zuk-z2-pro/development/miui-8-version-zuk-z2-pro-t3563578
ALERT: As all androis have the same command system, should work for any device, but be careful not to remove applications essential for system operation. It can cause an infinite loop in system reboot.
If you have a rooted phone, you can just download "ES Datei Explorer", grant root access and remove the folders in /system/app , /system/priv-app , /system/preload of the apps you don´t want. After reboot, you´ll just have to remove the icons from your homescreen.
Make a backup by moving the folders somewhere else. You´ll never know when you need one of these "unnecessery" apps.

Well thought, I'm accustomed to using linux, commands are the same, so it was something that I created in a "homemade" way and decided to share. This app actually displays the root directory, so, it's very good and less difficult, but the app remover can be useful for help you to know what file you need remove..
Thanks for adding the information ..
This is the link what app he's talking about
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop
Grants root access and go to directory for remove the file you want.
can anything be done without rooting?

L09 b383 Adaway Isssue

Hello guys,
i just upgraded my l09 to firmware version b383. Everything including root seems to work fine except my adaway app. It cant edit the hosts file.
I already changed the hosts path to "/vendor/etc/hosts" but it wont work. If i open fx explorer in root mode i am able to edit the hosts file properly when mounted rw. Does anyone know how to fix that problem or workaround?
Thanks in advance!

Which version of busybox do you have installed, if it's jrummy's ensure its installed to /system/xbin/busybox
If that's already the case then make sure you set the target hosts file in adaway preferences to /system/etc/hosts.
If not then uninstall your current busybox, install jrummy's busybox and follow the second step and you should be good to go.

I'm on B383 and this guide worked perfectly for me http://www.theandroidsoul.com/make-system-writable-android-7-0-nougat/amp/
Thanks for your responses! The trick with the busybox installation worked for me. I didnt even changed the hosts path back to default. Don't know if this also works. I'm happy

Busybox is not needed for AdAway, only root. You would need BusyBox for eg Viper4Andrroid
I have L09 c432 b383, TWRP 3.1.0-2, root by SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815-EMUI5.0.zip, and AdAway-v3.2-Feb.08.2017.apk works perfect.
No Busybox, AdAway hosts file as per default to /system/etc/hosts, no special mounting or whatever
