Stuck on 2.1 forever after using regedit trick??? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys i used a guide from mobiletechworld in attempt to get 2.2 not knowing it got pulled. I can't show the link as a new member but it was the regedit trick to get kies to upgrade/unbrand branded phones.
Although i didn't get it 2.2 i got a good update and got rid of the horrid Orange branding that was causing lots of problems.
My only worry is now when Im on kies i get "this devices version cannot be updated" now, i have been all over Google but can't find a straight answer, Have i screwed myself? Will i be forbidden from the official froyo later this month? Some say I've just got the latest firmware and therefore cannot update my device and have nothing to worry about but Im not convinced by this. Surely it would say something like "you already have the latest software" has the regedit trick annoyed sammy so much i won't be allowed on the froyo train?
One thread said if you get the latest kies the message will be different but this hasn't worked for me.
Please offer some words of wisdom to this unworthy noob

Mine initially said that, then a product code hack for me a newer firmware (JM1) which then said "you have the latest version" or similar. Since then I have a different firmware again - not 2.2 - and it again tells me cannot be updated.
I'd not worry until the 2.2 is out for your region. Which is now probable XEE after the reg hack. Once its out in full force we will know for sure. At worst you will just need to use Odin and fix it manually, or pay Samsung some cash to flash it back. I know how you feel but really its just words for now.

Did you have to do a regedit hack to get the newer firmware? Doesn't doin wipe your phone? Thanks for the reply =)

Can't you just use the Registry Hack again but put in an older 2.1 version to get the latest 2.1?

not here, not sure why. And yes, phone wipes but I am used to installing OS's so it is of little concern.

Well i think ill just get the same version if i reg hack again and i wouldn't know what to put in. I've heard that there Will be a New kies that Will have to be downloaded in order to get 2.2 which will probably be regedit hack proof.

Search the site for the latest Samsung Kies application and install it. You should have no problem updating your phone with Kies, I have done it on a few occasions with no problem at all.

Hopefully when you paid for you phone with ATT you got the insurance on it, I think it's like 4.95 per month...it protects you against damage. Now it won't protect you against what you did to your phone....But it does protect you against water damage....or ACCIDENTAL dropping and cracking the screen...read between the lines, you could have a brand new phone if you can't get that one up and running again....now there is a deductable, but noting like spending another 200.00 on anothe phone...

Are you a total idiot? There is no need for that Samsung mini kies from the state your phone is in will update you to the JH7 ota update and it is safer. @ Stewart Dude don't offer wrong advice you sound like a **** in all your posts and you aren't being helpful. Don't be a troll.

Pwned!
sixxbob, the Mini Kies route will work fine. I just came back from Cognition 2.2 beta 7 and used this method to get the JH7 update.
If you downloaded a cog rom on the same download page is the jh7 OTA. Flash it. But serriously I am on beta 6 and I can not see going back unless it is for another custom rom

I thought the odin update was the JH7 update?
You should be able to update using that.
With my phone using Cognition, because it just runs better.

[Q] Can't update to Froyo after failed reg-hack

A few months back I followed the instructions that were floating around to get Froyo early by pretending to be Swedish. Sadly I got there just too late and Samsung had fixed the loophole that allowed it.
At the time I didn't think it had done anything at all but it seems to have actually pushed me onto a different version of the firmware: one that keis does not believe an update is available for.
Presumably there must be hundreds of people in the same boat.
How can I get back onto the original version? Can I do the reg-hack in reverse somehow?
It's the 16gb model and it's from Vodafone.
Thanks in advance.
i'm i were in your shoes, i'd flash using Odin. But that's me of course. i do not use KIES by choice.

[Q] Software Updates?

Hi,
I was playing with ROM flashing and the like and I decided to go back to stock, so I did using the ODIN flash to JF6. However, it seems that I have trouble getting the JF7 update over the air to work. Any ideas?
Thanks
I'm a Noob, but you might try Kies - It should detect a newer version available and let you update that way. Much more reliable in any case if you ask me.
You can do search flashing to stock JH7 that should help you. If no one else has sent you a link by the time I get to my computer I'll send you a link I think it will be flashing 1010 build or something like that.

I've had more problems with kies than anything else, try the samsung website to update.
I see you was wanting JF7, I don't know what the difference is but this will get you back to stock JH7 Eclair.

I tried it, it works.
Well I want JH7, but I also want to be able to get the official Froyo when or if it comes out.

Like stated above.... flash using kies mini.... then you'll be ready for official AT&T froyo.
Alright thanks for all your help, Mini Kies did the trick.

[Q] What firmware use to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1

Hello,
I've a Galaxy-S (was from T-Mobile Uk, but I unlocked it, debranded it and so on), it used to be 2.1, so back in november I updated to 2.2 using the Kies trick (changing the area code and so on). Now I'm finding myself *not-so-happy* about many bugs that are around (sometimes apps just crash... etc..). I'd like to go to 2.2.1 if this would help. But Kies doesn't even show an available update, so I was thinking of flashing one with Odin. Which one do you recommend?
My firmware is XXJPP. I don't remeber how to get other info/codes, so tell me how if you need them.
Also, I'm ready to wipe everything, but I'd avoid it. So tell me how.
Thanks.
JPY or WJS8 in UK with CPW csc .

I suggest you the JS8 ROM. Is the last froyo 2.2.1 european firmware. You can use the JS8 rome in the romkitchen to customize your fw as you want
Odin for flashing Kies for orugnal upgrade
Is JS8 an official upgrade from JPY(2.2.1)? For the UK aswell????
Or is it just a general European(including UK) update?
I'm on JPY right now. Upgraded officially from JPO(2.2) in the UK.
Do you think it is better to flash JS8 firmware?
(I have tried 2.3.3 JVK but I would rather wait for the official gingerbread update)
JPY is still the most current firmware for UK. I'm in Australia and have been using it since release. Docs version of course.
JS8 is Nordic I think.

For stock go to samfirware.com, sign up, download Odin and jpy 2.2.1 (for UK). Install with Odin without repartition ticked and you should still have your apps/data.
Site has all the files and instructions you need. Just make sure you have download mode.
2.2.1 is miles better than 2.2. You'll wonder why you waited so long.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The networks do not upgrade all the incremental updates JPY last one in general use and none have bothered to push out the later upgrades preferring to wait for the official release of 2.3 .
Either JPY or WJS8 will work well on UK phones .

I tried both the kitchen and the: stock Rome. Even if the kitchen seems so clever and you don't need Odin in order to upgrade, I ended up with a 2.2.1 Tom that didn't have the market app, and other basic ones. Plus the media scanner was crashing every 10 seconds. Another one started up in Chinese and kept crashing various system apps. That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability. Instead I went to samfirmware got 2.3.2 and it is stable, clean and fast. Using Odin is easy in the end so I recommend this if you want a fully functional phone. And gingerbread is so faaaast
That's to say that it is not the best choice for stability.
You are doing something wrong then as its the safest and most problem free method .

I have 3uk sgs and immediately went for odin for all my flash updates.
First thing is to check u have three button combo working. Just pull the battery to get out of that mode.
I'd go straight to gingerbread JPK. And with the few, clockworkmod zips you can add battery percentage and a few other nice things that aren't included.
I haven't looked back as jpk is such a great rom - memory management is sorted so no need for autokillet or taskmanagers.

[Q] Rooted Galaxy won't update to Gingerbread

Hi people,
I don't know if it's me, or just my lack of knowledge as to topics on this problem..
I have Rooted my Galaxy-s because i didn't want the lot of standard apps, that worked really well..
After this i used KIES to update to Android 2.2.1, works fine!
Now i've been waiting for Gingerbread for so long, and according to Android, i should be able to update Over The Air.. but noooo..
KIES keeps telling me i have the latest Firmware installed.. but it clearly isn't..
My conclusion: i think i can't update because my phone was Rooted? PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong, which i hope to be the case..
I've tried factory reset on my phone but of course it stays Rooted..
Do i need to UNROOT my phone? Can't remember which programme i used to Root it so that doesn's help
Is it me, or am i just unlucky.. or maybe i just don't know enough about Rooting?
So, can anyone tell me how to install Gingerbread on my Rooted Galaxy S ?
Currently its running Android 2.2.1, Smallbandversion (whatever that means) is I9000XXJPY
Build number: FROYO.XWJS5
Sorry if this is the 100th topic on this, but i really digged a lot throuh other topics..
Loads of thanks in advance!
No, nothing to do with being rooted - won't make any difference.
Firstly ota updates not activated for sgs yet (ever?). Official updates are only available via kies dependent on your region and carrier, so you may be running the latest firmware for your combination of phone, region and carrier. gingerbread has only been released for a couple of nordic countries so far. if all goes well the rest of europe are expecting a general release very soon.
For the rest we are dependent on spoofing kies into thinking we are in region NEE (FINLAND) or flashing via odin. So you either spoof kies, flash via odin our sit tight and wait. But ota definitely not

As i thought, thanks to both!! I was a bit worried i c*cked up my phone there, but this tells me it's again down to lazyness on Android or Samsung's side..
I've been waiting so long so i got impatient and shovelled trough about all of the topics, but now combining your two replys, i think ill have a go with the NEE version then?
Beeing in Holland we'll just have to make do with a nice Finland version then that will make it interesting since Finnish is THE most weird written language there is, what with all the iiiimouyoniiisuomi and all but i trust it to have an English layout as well?
Ehm, i don't know the meaning of the term "Spoofing", is that a way to crack Kies somehow?
Again, BIG thanks to you! I will try the link and hope for the best, if it won't work i'll just have to be patient (so more).. Good thing beeing in Holland there are means to alter perception of time..
Thank you guys!

The NEE version definitely includes English and I'm fairly sure it includes Nederlandse too. Spoofing is a way to fool Kies into thinking you have a different firware/region, I've tried it and find it a messy way to upgrade. Just search spoofing Kies if you want to learn more about it. Personally I use use Odin 1.3, it's very easy to use, first make sure you can access recovery/download using the 3 button combo, and just to be safe, track down a stock version of the ROM your currently on in case you ever need it. JVH is also out now (a newer version, you'll find the thread here easily). I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work for you, just read through the guide a couple of times until you have it straight in your head, and if you're not sure about anything just ask, lots of good people on here willing to help others.

I've seen a few people post that gave them updates when they were using custom ROMs, but even if I flash a kernel on a stock ROM it tells me this version of the device cannot be updated. Kies is weird.
Kies updates official firmware only and will not update custom or stock roms .
But sometimes it gets in a muddle and does but very very rarely .

Well i thought maybe ill give my provider a call, after that i called Samsung.. anyway it's a maze of menus and of course none of the official people (who should know) don't know jack sh1t.. Seems like only thing they know is how to get the cash out of your pockets..
good thing the people on this forum DO know what they are talking about!
so adding up your replies above, i still wanna go with the Finnish NEE version, so i downloaded it, and installed Odin 3 on my laptop,
drivers for my phone are allready installed so Odin recognised the device if i connect it in download moce, so far so good on that,
now its down to the PIP, and i think the PDA stuff where i need to select the .tar files.. ??
am i right? i watched the Odin tutorial on youtube 4 times now..

-CSC_OXAJVK.tar.md5
-PDA_XXJVK_Sbl.tar.md5
-PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
i think this is the Finnish NEE version
so, which files am i missing, and which ones should i load in Odin?

For starters I'd go with JVB or JVH instead of JVK, and as it's your first time flashing I'd use a single .tar version like the one at the top of this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037584
or one of these
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
Both have the bootloaders so it's just handier.
You can also join samfirmware.com if you haven't already, plenty of firmwares there.
Once you have the single .tar on your desktop open Odin 1.3, click on the PDA button navigate to Desktop and select the appropriate file, (see pic attached).
Then put your phone in download mode using the 3 button combo and only then connect it to your PC. Wait for Odin to recognise the phone, when it does, press start and just wait for it to do its job. All going well once it's done it will reboot your phone, wait for the phone to finish rebooting before closing Odin and disconnecting.
If you still want to go ahead with the 3 .tar files you've already downloaded then look at the second link in this message, it has a good description of how to flash using the three files
that IS very helpful indeed!
now i even know in what order to do everything, its nice you explained it step by step so big thanks for that!
So, doing all steps gives my phone Gingerbead?
Im still puzzled as to why are there so many versions like XXJVB, XXJVH and all those? If it's all Gingerbread, does the correct version depend on which country youre in, or is it an updated version, or ar all of there totally different?
I just downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVB_XXJVK_NEEJV3_Sbl.exe.crdownload
Thats the "NEE", so should work on my device i understand..
so i extracted it in a folder and again there are three .tar files;
CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5
PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5
PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5
so im guessing i only have to load the "phone" .tarfile into Odin?
i promise im not a 70 year old man, just a newcomer at flashing

Ok so you're going with the three file flash, that means that in Odin you click on the PDA button and navigate to wherever you stored the PDA_XWJVB_Sbl.tar.md5 file, click the Phone button and find PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5, then click CSC and find CSC_NEE_JV3.tar.md5.
BUT....
You are coming from 2.2.1 right? I really think you should use one of the single .tar files in the pic attached as you're so new to flashing, they definitely have the GB bootloaders which you need if you're flashing from Froyo. The pic is taken from the second link I posted earlier. I flashed a single .tar and didn't do a wipe or factory reset and didn't have any problems. Just get the JVB or JVH one and use the method I posted earlier.
I'm using JVB with no problems, but others think JVH is better.
DMD9 i thank you again for all info you posted!
I will take your advice to use a single file, since all this still feels like blindfolded surgery to me and i take it when using 3 files theres more to go wrong?
I downloaded the GT_I9000_XWJVH_XXJVO_NEEJV3_Sbl --like you advised
But if i extract theres these three files in it, so i take it i only need to load the PHONE_XXJVK.tar.md5 in the PDA section ?
Which is the JVK.. the one you didn't reccomend
What makes a this file different from another? is it the features, or some country dependant thing? Or can i use this file, what are the drawbacks on this one?
Big thanks again!!

Excellent! You are now ready to flash Gingerbread.
Before you do it just go back and read over all the directions again then flash at your leisure
(The file didn't have to be on your desktop, it just makes it quicker and easier to find when you open Odin)
I'm relatively new to flashing as well (I've flashed about 8 times now, so I'm getting used to it lol) if you aren't sure about the naming of the different versions I.e. XXJVK etc. the best thing to do is join samfirmware.com. they have a page that explains what all those mean and how to understand what the basic firmware contains. It was a massive help for me.
