Clearly, you can use the tethering within Kies to connect to the interweb which is a massive bonus over most other 2.1 versions
Has anyone investigated using a Galaxy as a Wireless Access Point?
There's a 'droid app here
h t t p : / / c o d e .g o o g l e. c o m / p / android-wifi-tether /
But the Galaxy S isn't mentioned.
Does anyone know of an app that would work the same?
Basically, I want to avoid having to swap my Sim into a MiFi type device (Google it if you've no idea what I'm talking about)
I tried today:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
"wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk"
and .. it works. Sometimes Ive got some "unknown state", but restart (app) will work.
Eh, its built into the galaxy s. RTFM.

I know how to tether using Kies
I'm talking about setting my phone up so that I can not only access the interweb from my PC using Kies, but also PSP, DS, netbook and so on.
D'OH!
Settings -> Wireless and Network -> Mobile-AP Settings -> Mobile Accesspoint
I thought all Galaxy S phones has mobile AP already built in as standard.
Steps:
Head to settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP settings
Once in this area, if you have wifi turned on already it will pop up with the following message 'Disconnect Wi-Fi for using Mobile AP'. Click yes.
Next, click the menu key and click settings. In the options that appear,
- tick 'Mobile AP'
- untick 'Hide my device'
- tick 'Tethering' (if you wanna use)
and use the connection password in that screen to connect or use your own.
This all works for me.

Exactly THAT is built in!!!!!!
A wireless AP!
Yup, you're right cheers.
Now setup and working.
What's odd is that most plans in the UK actually ban tethering and yet the SGS is the only Android phone that has all this functionality out-of-the-box.

[Solved] Possible to use I9000 as a wireless modem using wifi NOT 3g?
I was wondering if there is some way to have the Galaxy S allow a WIFI connection when wired to a computer as it does not seem to naturally allow this.
Asking because I've just moved an old desktop pc upstairs and too cheap to by wireless usb modem.
lets try to understand you a bit more
so you want to share your SGS internet connection with another computer using WiFi
but you do not want it to use 3G for data.
Then how are you supposed to connect to the internet without a Conexion to the internet?
the USB dongle to RJ45 is not compatible with SGS
I think he wants this:
internet->dsl/cable->rj45->wifi router->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC
instead of standard tethering:
internet->mobile broadband->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC
I should have mentioned in the original post that I have a wireless router for all my internet connection needs. I was hoping to utilise the Galaxy S in connecting my old pc to my unlimited cable internet provider through wifi rather than to limited 500mb package through phone provider (3G).
So like zorxd said "internet->dsl/cable->rj45->wifi router->galaxy S->usb cable->old PC"
I take it this is deliberately restricted to force using provider, anyway around it?
that scenario is possible
look for the pdanet app
it enables the USB tethering
but why not just put in a cheap $5 10/100/1000 nic or usb wireless to the old PC ?

I agree with this. Might as well buy a usb wireless unless you're only using the internet on the old PC a few times per month or something.

The pdanet app looks to be perfect for what I need. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Allgamer.
This is the most convenient option for infrequent use on a desktop I may be using for parts in a few weeks time.
The Mobile AP option is not available with SFR in France either.
Is there any way that this can be enabled?
I installed appbrain - and it lists mobile AP setting as an installed app. However, I'm not able to enable it. Any pointers?

well when the phone gets released ... root it (once a method is found that works).... then install wifi tether for root users
already done
Hero already has usb tethering built in, its under wireless controls in settings, there's an option to share mobile networks via usb
Hope this helps
Will this work with a Mac ?
No one is for sure yet. It hasn't worked in the leaked versions, even the shipped ones, so we won't know for sure until it is released in the UK on August 15th.
Bluetooth PAN should work as long as the Hero advertises itself correctly over Bluetooth.
Well that's the hopeful theory
That is currently a no-go as well. The Hero (device, not ROM) hasn't been rooted yet & Android throws a fit if you try to listen to the BT socket without root access. That's why the current BT tether apps for the Dream/Magic require root. Even the OBEX app BlueX in the market requires root to recieve files (but can send without root).
Sorry lol, I wan't it too.
Ouch... well thx for the heads up on that... I think
mmm... hopefully a solution will emerge either via BT or USB. But then the telco's are getting smart to the fact that people use their contracted and allowable (ie payed for) unlimited internet (I'm on an unlimited data Orange plan since my old Touch Diamond) do do a very bad thing...
Use it to transfer data

But, the worth is that there are no single carrier who offers this phone and we are 1 day before official launch in EU!!!
Its available for preorder only in one shop for whole country for flat price of 500E, yay
unbelievable
Haha I've changed that release date so many times based on several different sites. That is the date on amazon.co.uk but I know carriers in some places are getting them earlier. Sorry lol. So whoever gets one, is the "Mobile Network Sharing" option enabled in settings?
In the netherlands they gave 75 away for free
I got one
will be delivered next week ^_^
Has anyone got the Mobile network sharing option working??? I can't get my laptop recognise the device in this mode...
I can confirm that the built-in usb tethering works on the Hero.
1) Plug in usb
2) Home screen -> Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile network sharing
Your computer now sees a usb network adapter; The hero runs a dhcp server, so you can get all network settings from there. On my laptop (running Fedora linux) I did not have to do anything, NetworkManager automatically detected the new device and set up networking. I don't have a mac, but I assume it would work automatically as well.
PS: I bought my Hero from http://www.handtec.co.uk without contract. I'm using a 3 Ireland mobile broadband sim.

On winMo third party apps never flagged up however I fear this app seems more regulated?

It shouldn't do no, you are still dialing to their network in the same way you would on your phone, just there is a link for your computer to access that network.
I used the 3gb web and walk for 18 months and had a program on my winmo device called WMWifiRouter which did the same kind of thing (and Joikuspot on my Symbian) and used my laptop via my phone, never any issues!

greetings,
just got my first android phone a week ago. captivate. kicks arse. anyways ive been wondering if there is a way to 'reverse tether'. in other words share my pc internet with my phone so i dont have to use so much of my data. i dont have wifi on my pc but i have a bluetooth dongle that plugs into usb that enables connection of bluetooth devices. i was thinking maybe i could tunnel thru the bluetooth and somehow access internet thru that. wishful thinking or a possibility?
Actually what u want to do is create a adhoc network where ur computer sends out wifi via a incripted network go to network and sharing center and go to create a adhoc network u can look it up in ur help guide its differing with each operating system hoped I helped

Since the PC has bluetooth, you can create a Bluetooth NAP or PAN on the PC side. This creates a "personal area network" that you can then connect to from the phone. Some bluetooth PC software supports this, some do not. Depends what your dongle supports!
right on! thanks for the reply.
i was actually trying the PAN option yesterday after discovering it via google. couldnt get it to work tho. i get stuck at the part where i have to select the service i am wanting. it says the only services available from my captivate are Active sync, Headset Gateway, Object Push, Obex File Transfer. Active Sync seemed to be the closest thing but when selected it doesnt add a shortcut in my devices like the options do so i figured it didnt work. far as i know active sync id for winmobile or something anyways so i wasnt counting on it.
Any advise from here? It's all very much appreciated.
This too must have already been covered. I'll look elsewhere.

As said before, unfortunately Android does seem to connect to Ad-Hoc networks easily. If you are running Windows 7, you can use Connectify to create a WiFi hotspot and connect through that.
The other alternate is to create an Ad-Hoc network and join that network. I have not been able to get this working correctly yet but other phones have.
The problem is that the native wpa_supplicant filters all the ad-hoc networks from the wifi network list.
You can get the patched wpa_supplicant with allows you to see all the networks here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
Remember to get the 0.6.x version.
Then I believe you have to set your wifi to use a static ip to be able to connect.
The last time I tried I managed to get a connection on Froyo ROMS but no data. It just might be my settings on either ends.
excellent reply. thanks are in order here.
For closure, I ended up using connectify. Works perfectly.

Are you able to connect other devices with your laptop hotspot??
What about vice versa ... does your laptop connects to Galaxy note wifi hot spot?
Here is someone have wrote. I forget the name of poster but i have copied it for my reference. Most probably it was by Ravindra
you can do without any SW
On you XP machine, Go into Control panel
Open “Network Connections”
Right click on “Wireless Connection” and click on “Properties”
Click on the “Wireless Networks” tab and select the check-box which says “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings”
Under “Preferred networks” click “Add”
Type a name in “Network name” text box
Select “Shared” from the options under “Network Authentication”
Under Data encryption select “WEP” and type in your password in “Network Key” field and now click “OK”
Now the new HotSpot should show in the list of preferred networks.
Click on the “Advance” button and select “Computer-to-computer (ad hoc) networks only” and press close
Hit “OK”.
Now, you need to share the wired internet connection (LAN) so that your Galaxy Note now can access the internet connection through this HotSpot you just created.
For this, Go to local Area Connections, right click it and select properties
Go to the “Advanced” tab and under Internet Connection Sharing check the box which says “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection” and make sure the box under that is NOT selected so that no one can disable the network remotely.
Hit “OK”
You are done. Now connect your Galaxy Note using your XP machine as a hotspot.

Hi,
Is there any sulotions for ICS to support ad hoc? I have searched alot and I need to connect my Note to my PC's internet. The problem is that my pc is to old to support connectify etc...
Reverse tethering app uses my data plan in order to appear the connection as 3G. And it uses cable. Not good enough.
Ad hoc would be best option.
Thank you

If you ever heard of an application for Nokia called JOIKU HOTSPOT you will be interested on this topic. I use joiku hotspot on my nokia phone to enable to connect to multiple devices at home. I don't have wired internet. Since this is an ahhoc wifi hotspot I am not updating to ICS unless a hack is available to enable wpa supplicant to "see" the joiku adhoc signal. You saying reverse tethering have some issue - Now reverse tether application using your wired Internet of your PC for your android device
While Joiku spot is for sharing your device network to PC
So question is you want to share net from your device to PC
OR
want to share PC internet to device?
Edit :wat i understand now is
You dont have wifi router, but just you have created wireless netwok (virtual) and you want to share your device net to PC wirelessly
if yes
try this, it have ad hoc support if i remember correctly, since long i have not used it.

I don't know. It is strange. If i have no credits in my sim card, and I connect to internet via the app, it goes fine. But I can't see connection as 3G and some apps don't work due to this.
Then when I put credits to my sim card, the connection appears as 3G. And the data plan button turns green whenb checking in setings. If i turn of I lose coonection as 3G. Some times it doesn't use data plan, but often it does.
BTW, I never use data plan for anything it is always disabled, but the reverse tether app turns on.
No idea what is wrong.

Tethered via Bluetooth, using phones wifi instead of data. Works fine with international roms, but with some carrier branded ROMs, if tethering is enabled, wifi is disabled
Gear itself has no wifi, but apps can be tricked into thinking Bluetooth tether is actually a wifi connection via the network spoofer (closed framework module)

So we established there are no apps that will share the wifi internet via bluetooth and that the switching off of wifi during tethering is an automated function. So is there a way to prevent that auto-switch from occurring?
At any rate, if you have the galaxy note 3, and you have a USB 3.0 computer, just tether the internet from USB. Great for when at home, but the downside of this is: if you want to reverse tether from wifi in an airport or coffee shop, then a laptop is required. And at that point, what would you be doing on the watch, that isn't easier on either your phone or laptop, now that you're forced to already have those items out?
Therefore, it would be nice to tether wifi to bluetooth so I can just leave my phone in my pocket and not be forced to use mobile data when I don't want to.
