I'm curious as to how long it should take my phone to see all the installed apps I have on my phone after a reboot. My phone sometimes take a good five minutes before they are all visible. Is this a sign of an SD card failing? Maybe it's time to spring for the $81 32gb card on amazon.
I'm running CM 6.1 RC.
If you have apps2sd setup maybe that's ok, that sounds about right. If your worried about your sd card, do a nand and save it to your computer and backup your sd card contents too

Well I sure wouldn't go to a slower card (32GB) to solve this. I'd go to a class 6.

The 16gb card I have now is a Class 2, so I wouldn't be loosing speed, aside from the fact that it could take longer to go through more storage to load my apps, but I'd still just stick with a 1gb app partition anyway. I'm trying to wait until the 32gb cards are down to around $50 anyway.

Do you mean visible in the app drawer or available as a shortcut on your launcher desktop? I find that any apps using froyo-style apps-to-sd aren't available at the point the desktop starts up so the shortcuts fail to work even though the apps are there just fine in the app drawer. If I restarted AWDlauncher/Launcherpro after rebooting all my shortcuts started working again.

Visible in the app drawer.
If I reboot the phone, it takes forever for the apps to become visible in the app drawer, so then I go to settings / applications / manage apps, and all the apps are listed. Some show their proper icon, but most show the generic SD card icon. This is the case in both the "All" tab and in the "On SD card" tab.
I only ask cause it didn't used to be this slow to load the apps. It seems like it's been since 2.2 that it's gotten slower to load them all. Maybe that's just a FROYO thing or something, idk. But I figured I should check with the XDA crew and find out their thoughts on the matter.
Well all I can say is that I'm running cm6.1 rc1 (and before that cm 6.0) and while I do get some default icons on reboot (only for apps that have been moved to SD), all I have to do it restart my launcher and everything is fine instantly.

Lately I've LP has been freezing on me in a few moments after boot, basically after media scanning is done my UI is frozen and I need to bring up task manager to close out LP and exit out of task manager and it runs fine again, anyone know whats causing this?
it happens i think. i remember just installing chompsms and it's been happening since. switched to handcent and the problem's not there anymore.
maybe some application is causing it on your end?
I have the same problem! No matter what I do, Launcher Pro freezes after booting up, I have to close & re-open!
I had the same problem no matter what setup I used on my phone, even did it straight after a clean factory reset. Gave up with it in the end and am using Zeam Launcher now, very quick and responsive although I do miss the LP widgets
Found a fix, its caused by the .andriod secure folder on the EXTERNAL SD.. delete all the contents from there and mark the folder as READ ONLY and reinstall your apps that were there w/o the EXTERNAL SD card to guarantee they dont come back.
100% fixed on my end!

Ain't that the folder used by apps 2 sd? I would rather put up with fc in lp then screw with app 2 sd.

I dont even use app 2 sd in the first place.
I still have thouse hangs at bootup, sometimes goes fine, sometimes it is needed to be closed. I had this folder on my external sd, the folder is empty. Read and Write flags are off
Any other suggestion?
I have same problem... +1
it looks like its an actual error with the app itself, i have had this problem lots of times, i did a full wipe and only installed launcher pro, nothing else, the only 1 app i had on the phone was launcher pro and it still froze.
i just went to ADW launcher, i like it alot and you can resize widgets and stuff, very customisable..
2nd favourite is zeam, would be my number one but i couldnt figure out how to save the settings... theres a wide range of other launchers why not try something else ??
my LP does that as well on my vibrant. it really isn't that big of a deal, unless you repeatedly reboot your phone...
just wait a little while after your phone boots and just let everything load up
Yes, we can try another launcher, but launcherpro is best for me, because I want grid 5x6 icons. Go launcher is great as well, but there is max 5x5 :/
Hi, I just update my Galaxy S to Froyo yesterday, followed one of the tutorial here and apply the lag fix and everything.
I just realize it today that some apps that I've placed on homescreen is always missing when I just reboot the phone. not a big deal since I can just go to apps list and set the shortcut again on homescreen, but it gets annoying after a while. further digging, I found that all missing shortcut are all apps that has been installed on my external 1gb sd cards.
so can anyone help me with this? also my phone felt a bit slow when I boot it. took a while until widget like beautiful widget, and battstat to load. same with scanning internal and external sd card. is this normal? I swear it felt faster yesterday when I just finished updating froyo.
thank you
I cannot help you, but it is a pain that the phone has to scan the SD files averytime you do anything, take a photo, load musica, reboot, and it takes too long to do it...
Its normal

Hi all,
I've read hundred of stickies, Q&A's, FAQ's, nd whatever, but I haven't found a similar problem. I's appreciate any help or hint.
When I reboot, many desktop icons (direct links) disappear. Also the wallpaper (I use Ownskin). Widgets and other settings seem to remain unaffected.
This doesn't happen to all icons: e.g, in the 4th desktop screen I have 16 game icons. When I reboot, 8 or 10 of them have disappeared.
I wonder if this is related to having moved some apps to the SD, as if they have somehow lost track of their confg files (sorry if this sounds dumb, newbie Android user).
I am extremely happy with my SGS, but this problem is getting really annoying.
Here's my data
GT-I9000
Official carrier (Spanish Movistar) Froyo.BGJP3 update
Baseband I9000BGJP2
Rooted and lagfixed, carrier bloatware removed.
TIA for your time!
same problem here.. every program i install to sd the icon is gone after reboot.. seems to be some kinda timing thing where when it builds the desktop the sd is in the middle of scanning for media or something.. running stock jpy 2.2.1 with bln kernel.. anyone else..
Your explanation is probably correct. However, I am curious as to why you still need app to SD despite having 2 gb of app space.
that is normal with most apps 2 sd
if you refresh it again, they will show up
dont really need apps to sd with 2 gig you are right.. but apps such as angry birds.. automatically install to sd (ie over 16 meg)..
allgamer. how do you refresh your desktop.. scanning media is not the same.
and it is a pain to manually add icons after every boot.
is this the problem in all froyo.. really needs to be fixed.. there needs to be some kinda delay say 2 minutes after boot before removing icons.. even if it has to show some generic icon till the app is avial.

Yes, that was it! I moved all apps back to memory, and everything is working fine again. You are right, there is no need to put them into the SD, with such an amount of available space. Anyway, I still think this is a bug in Froyo. If it has the option to put apps to SD, it should work correctly.
Thanks!

Has anyone had any issues with apps using the internal storage instead of the sd card? Any app I download it uses my internal storage to save. How do I change this so out users my external automatically?

Yea I'm having the same phucking problem and I'm totally fed up with it. I'm about ready to return this POS because Motorola in their phucking infinite wisdom decided to partition the internal memory the way only an idiot would
Wtf? Are you freaking serious Moto? For real. I'd like to meet the idiot who's idea it was to come up with this.
Now we are all limited to a non removable 8gb SD card basically. I can piss 8gb. Where do I freaking put my music Motorola you dumb asses?
Every app I've installed and wanted to use can not have the default location for music changed. So I'm stuck with this tiny ass partition, and an empty 32gb card.
Why the hell even include an External SD card Motorola, why. Its useless

Download App2SD from the market. You can move almost all the apps to the SD card.

I noticed this too when I installed the Amazon MP3 store although If you create a file on the External SD card and manually move your files there the music app will see it and play it from there. You can alse mount the phone on your computer and manually move them or use Astro File Manager to move them on the phone. It does suck though to have to jump through those hoops. Why you can't just change the default location is ludicrous.
Obviously, you guys got your Bionic very very recently.
DO NOT TRANSFER APPS TO SDCARD. IF YOU DO, YOU WILL LOSE THE APPS AND YOU NEED TO REINSTALL THEM!
MOTO configured Bionic differently (stupid!), and forces all apps to be installed in internal memory.
However, you can still save your media files on the external sdcard.
p.s. Don't use APP2SD on Bionic.
Why is their a better app? Is their a fix

You can use the program to move apps to the media area without issue. As for moving them to the microSD, it won't let you do that, even with root. So, I'm not sure what the fuss is about?

When your phone boots up, it fails to properly recognize apps saved to the media area.
To prevent it, just keep all your apps saved to phone until an OTA arrives addressing it.
Search the forums for disappearing apps to get filled in.
OK I thought the media area was the SD card. But I still haven't had a problem with the apps disappearing.

Neither have I, and I've been using it for almost a week. FWIW, I haven't seen any of the reports of this problem mention Gingerbread or the Bionic. Not saying it can't happen, but I think app updates have fixed the problem.
UPDATED: Been losing apps left and right today. This isn't an APP2SD issue, but a Bionic issue stemming from the way those tards at MOT decided to partition the internal storage. Why do companies do stupid crap like this?
While I was playing around with my lapdock I discovered something intersting.
I was installing some apk files from my back and discovered that my lapdock had several partitions mounted which started with "com."
It didn't take me long to realize that they were the programs moved to my media area.
They apeared as Ian drives and couldn't be innounted.
I devices to test out a suspicion and restarted only to find that those apparatus disappeared.
After some more testing I realized that by moving the files on the phone between the storage and phone until it no longer loads that app as a drive, then that app won't disappear when the phone is powered off or rebooted.
I know that not everyone has a lapdock to get around the disapearing apps, but this is a temporary solution until a fix is actually released.

Motorola! Fix your crap and quit slipping!
i'm so confused about this, i had noticed when i loaded my sd card nothing was getting recognized like widget locker themes stuff like that. then i notice that everything is getting downloaded to the internal memory. i went into settings> storage and changed download location to sd card, but everything is still downloading to internal memory. i just don't understand why it isn't looking at my sd card automatically like all of my other phones did, droid x, t-bolt, og. it's driving me effing crazy though. can someone maybe explain in dummy terms what is going on?

Look at it like this...
Your phone has 16GB of internal memory.
4GB you never see. The system uses that 4GB
8GB is read as internal storage. Motorola designed that for media. That means your videos, pictures and documents.
4GB is for apps. This is where it gets complicated. These 4GB is dedicated to your apps. It was designed to be unintrusive with your main partition.
You shouldn't have to move to SD. Not needed.
Some wishets will only be recognized when the app is on your phone partition.
Does this answered your question?

Just go into "settings, applications, manage applications" and click the "media area" tab. Any apps that have a "check mark" in them are stored to what is called the "media area." If it reads "com.*" then it has already been uninstalled. Just go reinstall it. Then go in there and all the apps with the check mark... click on the app, and then click the "move to phone" button. Wait a few seconds while it transfers it.
Sadly this is annoying and also sometimes makes the market think that the apps are not installed.
Freaking Motorola. They make such good hardware, it's a pity they put such crap inside.
Does anyone else have this issue? It started happening to me on JB stock LQ4 - I'd put the "sportstracker" app on my homescreen, and every now and again it would be deleted (its an app I use daily, so I notice it!).
I didn't think too much of it, but now I've installed LightJB and the CoCore E 6.0 I half expected this problem to have gone away - but it has happened again! It only seems to affect that one app, which is installed in just the same way that others are - not on the SD card, from the playstore etc etc.
Its more of a mild annoyance than anything else, but I have read of at least one other person experiencing it - any ideas where to look for a solution?
Cheers!

Go to settings, then applications, and tap on the app. Move it to phone storage, and then put the app back on your screen and restart. It should stay there. Seems a bit of a bug with touchwiz that if it is on sd card it is removed upon restart.
Yep, touchwizz have that bug.

I was just about to post to say that it wasn't on the SD card (because I haven't put it there!!), and then noticed that in apps it says "Move to device storage", so I guess it actually is on the SD card for some peculiar reason. Do the app developers get to specify where it is stored?
Anyway, thanks - I'll move it across and hopefully it'll "stick"!

Use Apex or other launcher and all will be fine.
