clockworkmod works fine for me and yes it does hang for awhile let it sit for a good 20mins before taking the battery out, make sure the is space on the sdcard, and depending on th speed of the sdcard it might take longer.

noob with rooted hero...
So ive been using my rooted hero for awhile now i got the RA recovery working and the CM 6.x but I havent been able to get the clockworkmod working either. ive been using the rom-manager app from the market and whenever I try to flash the clockworkmod it says error while flashing? so is there another way to flash the clockworkmod or something else i can try to make it work, i havent been able to find much info out there. if you could direct me where to look or whatever i could use the help thanx. Im just testing everything out that i can so i learn the field ive been playing around in better.

Open up Rom Manager and scroll down to Flash Alternate Recovery and touch that. It will ask 'Are you sure you want to flash an alternate recovery? blah blah blah.. Select OK. Once finished select OK. Scroll back to the top and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Select the phone model (mine is HTC Hero (CDMA) and wait. Once finished select OK then scroll to Reboot into Recovery. Hope that helps

Is superuser installed? it is default with most custom roms, but if you are running stock sprint rooted it wont be, the app needs to have superuser permissions to flash.

Hmm, well before I got the opportunity to try installing superuser I goofed something and had to start over from scratch. But when I reinstalled rom manager I got it to flash the clockwork recovery, I think it may have been that I didn't install the clockwork rom before I did anything else the first time. Anyhow after flashing clockwork I goofed something again and decided I preferred Amon recovery more so now everything is working and stable again. Thanx for tip though I'll remember that if I ever go back to the stock sprint rom...

After I did the S-OFF unlock, the only way I could get a recovery on the phone was via the unlocked (S-OFF) HBOOT, taking the clockwork recovery image (.img) adding it and an android-info.txt (is that right?) I stole from someone elses HERCIMG.zip and making my own HERCIMG.zip then flashing via HBOOT menu.
If I try to use ROM Manager, I get an error that flashing failed too. Amon_Ra recovery flashes fine from ROM Manager, however.
Hope I didn't confuse anyone

[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for Vibrant (FINAL! SAFE!)

First things first, if you flashed a previous version of Clockwork Recovery using Odin, FLASH BACK TO A STOCK KERNEL using this Odin package:
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-vibrant-stock.tar.md5
This recovery is *very* safe to use. It does NOT flash your kernel; it is a completely uninvasive recovery method.
How it works: The recovery is packaged as an update.zip that you run from STOCK recovery. The update.zip unpacks Clockwork Recovery onto the ramdisk and restarts recovery. When you reboot, it reverts back to the original, unmodified, stock recovery. So, you will need to keep the recovery on the root of your SD card as an update.zip, and apply the zip every time you want to start Clockwork.
HOWEVER, if you use ROM Manager, all of the recovery installation and management instructions are done for you!
Installation instructions:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose Vibrant as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
Watch the backup go!
That's it! This is completely painless and safe! There is no need for Odin anymore to replace the recovery or flash updates!
If you appreciate my work, please buy the Premium version of ROM Manager!
Failed the first time. Left me in the stock recovery menu and gave a recovery error when clockwork first started. Flashed again and tried to backup a second time. Looks like it worked perfect! Now we need some froyo!

Yes! That is expected! The very first boot WILL FAIL, the recovery needs a kick start to complete installation.
little tip
after I downloaded Rom Manager and had it download the recovery for my Vibrant.
After the success message I waited nothing happened so you may have to select to manually reboot into the recovery, then select "reinstall packages" to finish the installation.
I don't see Vibrant in ROM manager. Do I need to buy premium or am I doin somethin wrong

Please make sure you guys are on wifi. T-Mobile is caching your webpages and serving you older versions.
when i flash the recovery.. and reboot it goes to the stock recovery i hit reinstall packages then it goes to clockwork.. but after that if i reboot it goes back to stock... hmm thats odd..

That's how it is supposed to work. Recovery is not replaced permanently. It's safer that way. Just reinstall packages to get into clockwork. Or use ROM Manager to have it handle everything automatically.

If flashing manually, yes. Just flash using ROM Manager though, and it will handle that all for you automatically.
I can't permanently replace the recovery until the kernel source and whatnot is released for the Vibrant.
Hells yeah!!! Will someone PLEASE put a shipped firmware out now? Like the T959UVJFD. I appreciate the life saving effort from MS_Guru, but t959uvje8 is not jiving with me and my 3g and/or wifi...
Amazing work! Excellent idea for a 100% safe recovery! Kudos!!

At the very top of rom manager, you must flash 2.5.0.1 recovery. Did you do this first?

This exact same thing happened to me. What I did to fix it was pull the battery, then wipe everything (dalvik, data, cache), and then rebooted. My phone was able to boot then.
I'm having the same problem with rom manager. I just rooted my desire using the unrevoked method, then ran rom manager. I did install the recovery mode first, then backed up the rom. How my desire is just rebooting to the htc screen. How do I get out of this?
Many thanks,
Joe

Hey, that's exactly the same issuing I'm experiencing now. Did you solve it? And if yes, how?
Well, a few hours later I solved it by restoring a backup and then booting went well. Also described in a thread on androidforums dot com (I can't enter the link here due to not having posted enough messages) .

I don't know if this helps, but I'm pretty sure nandroids are specific to which recovery they were created with, I read that somewhere a few days ago. If you did not have clockwork before, I would try getting the recovery you used to make the nand, install that recovery and then restore the nand. Then try the whole wipe everything and get clockwork and go to town. If you haven't tried RA/Darch 1.7 recovery, I would recommend it, I personally like it better than clockwork, it seems faster, and simpler to use.
Exactly What "Il Duce" Said Will Fix Your Problem, Same Exact Thing Happened To Me, What I Did Was Go Back To Previous Version Of Rom Manager Then Flash Alternate Recovery, AND Regular Clockwork Recovery, Should Be Good After That!

Help Bootloop !

I'm pretty sure there is nothing that can be done until I get home. But I wanted to see if any one had any ideas.
First off I hate clock work recovery always have probably always will until they fix it.
I was on CM6.1 everything is backed up through Amon Ra and in theory Clockworkmod Recovery v2.5.1.0
I went to flash a rom it gives me error E:can't make /tmp/update_binary but it started the install process so now I'm in a bootloop. When I go into restore it gives me a MD5 mismatch E: cant open /tmp/recovery.log
Now in a normal situation I just push amon ra back into the phone through windows but I'm at work is there anything I can do at all?
You can boot into recovery by using the 3 finger salute--wipe all--and restore a bu
Good idea, if you don't, is to regualry do sdcard bu's also

You have all the luck danger-rat
I even moved them to the right folders on the sdcard
Never looked at busybox. I have it in TB, but in a different folder than the regular BB would go. I have on occasion had BB try to update and said I had a version installed (referring to TB) and asked if I wanted to install it to a different place. I think I said no, not sure how it all worked at that time. Not sure of the exact wording either, and it has been awhile.
Will see if I have two BB's in two different locations. The dev of TB, explained how it worked once, but forgot what he said.
But, I would think if I don't have BB installed right, independent of TB's one, somethings wouldn't work.
Ken
I discovered my problem by seeing a few glitches with Root Explorer, and the dev told me to switch out busybox - then suddenly my broken backup worked...

RE runs fine for me as all else
Guess I just can't restore between CW and Amon for some other reason
Don't really need to to as I have duplicate bu's under each and on my laptop

Thanks for all the help I was back up in running with in tens mins I just had to push amon ra back on the phone and restored it wooo!. The only reason I use clockwork is to push themes that require it. Oh well thank you again for the attempts to help me in my need. I ended having to go to walmart and buy a 14 phone to fire my sim in.

[Q] Need help with ROM Manager

Ok so I'm new to flashing a ROM, and Im having a little problem with ROM Manager. Ive been trying to make a backup of my current ROM prior to flashing to a new ROM. However when I choose the option to backup current ROM it shows me the name of the backup and then reboots my device (Samsung Captivate) into recovery mode. Not really sure what it wants me to do there so I choose to reboot the device, I then check to see if it made the backup and nothing??? Im not sure what it is that Im doing wrong but Im sure I must be missing a step. The phone is rooted, running 2.2 other than that nothing else has been moded. If any of you can help me I would appreciate it, I just dont want to move forward with flashing a ROM before Ive backed up the current ROM. I have made a backup of all apps and data using Titanium.

When it goes into recovery, is it the ClockWorkMod recovery menu? Green text? If it isn't getting there you need to install it from ROM manager first or just install it off an update.zip file that is floating around XDA and other sites. Once that is setup, you can run the backup through ROM Manager. It should boot into a recovery mode and then start doing a lot of writing of files to your new backup directory.
Post back if you are still having problems.
I did select the option for flashing ClockWorkMod recovery and chose the Captivate as my device. It did say that it sucessfully downloaded the file and Im assuming that it meant it installed it. And to answer your question I think I can safely say that no its not clockwork recovery when it reboots as it does say at the top of the screen "Android Recovery" so Im pretty sure that ClockWork is not installed. But I will look for that update.zip file and try to install it that way...

I'm sorry, you are looking for recovery-update.zip. I would try to run the ROM Manager install again and see what happens. I haven't had to play with the Android Recovery in quite some time but if the recovery-update.zip file is in the root of your sd card, you should be able to install it through the Android recovery. I'll keep looking. If I can find the file on my phone, i'll post it. Good luck.
If this is your first time booting into CWM recovery it will go to the base recovery first. Then you need to "reinstall packages". That will replace the recovery file with the CWM recovery file and return to the main menu. Then choose reintall packages one more time and it should bring you to CWM recovery instead of the base one. From then on it should bring you directly to the CWM recovery.
As for the backup it's done from CWM recovery. So once you get thru the steps above you will see backup and restore options on the recovery menu and you can go thru that process.
There may be some help in here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163
First try to flash it again through ROM Manager.

That update.zip should have been placed there by ROM Manager. Possibly try uninstalling & reinstalling ROM manager. Else, that update.zip should be somewhere. I'd grab the one off my phone but I'm not entirely sure which one it is. My ROM already had CWM with it. I'll try to look for a correct update.zip but I'm at work so I'm not going through XDA all day.

I missed it too. The above post regarding 3e recovery is what you need to do, one of the phones I have I need to do the same process after flashing back to stock. Sorry for the confusion.
Been having a similar issue when it takes you to stock recovery, I hold down both volume buttons and power until I see AT&T let go of power it usually takes me to clockwork recovery menu, I then select whatever I want to do backup, recover, or install from sd.
I don't know why it started doing that but that's what I found works. Hope it helps.

Am not sure I did; I think it asked me if I wanted to back up the current rom and I think I clicked not to. Either way, I cannot do anything in CWM, what ever I choose gets stuck at the little hat with the arrow and I have to pull the battery.
It's not a big deal (I hope at least) to revert back to an original image, as it's my back-up phone so I don't use it daily. Hope it's easier than that though..
I would say reverting back to an original image via the passimg trick would be your best option right now (unless your bootloader is unlocked?)

It is unlocked. Any magic trick..?!
EDIT: I can enter the options in CWM. Being used of the Atrix I was pressing the on/off button instead of the trackball to choose. Ffs.. Anyway, I tried wiping the data, no go; still stuck on bootscreen
I would try restoring a backup if you have one. If not, just do a wipe and clean install...
Unlocked bootloader could've been used to install a new recovery, though that now looks it was operator error... xD

My phone is now not moving past the motorola dual core screen. It still says unlocked at the top left and I can still enter cwm and fastboot. I have read alot about trying to flash through fastboot, but I am sorry I am a newb and do not know how to flash through fastboot. I am desperate for help... any help would greatly be appreciated.
If you can still access recovery, I would try a full wipe and instal again...
Thank you for your response... I did as you said and wiped everything... found a .zip file for android 2.3.4 gingerbread and installed that through cwm. I now have a new question... what is the best way to create a nandroid backup?? I went in android recovery mode on the boot screen and proceeded to backup through the menus and saved it to my external sd card... the only problem is that when I tried to restore back to the backup I made before it kept giving errors while trying to install the backup file. Any ideas how I can successfully create a android backup on this ATRIX 4g??

You can start by going to the atrix forum and not the nexus one.
