This may be odd

But i rooted my N1, but i am completely happy with the way it is now and i dont want to flash a custom rom on it, so what can i really do now, for instance would i be able to install wired tether and have it work? or do i need to install a custom rom for that
I am just wondering if there is any benefit of your the N1 so far without having to flash a custom rom

yes, you should be able to install wired and wifi tether. but i would suggest giving other roms a shot, if you dont like it. just do a nand restore

can you still install apps2sd with no custom rom?
also newb question. doesn installing a custom rom after root give a noticable perfomance boost? like feeing up more ram and rom as well?

most custom roms have the himem enabled, so that will double the available ram for you to use. and apps2sd only works well with the custom rom they came with
i am running cyanogen, and it works really well, better than stock for sure.

But when you go to the download page of wired tethered it says i need a rdnis enabled kernel and i dont think the nexus one comes stock with it, but thats mainly just a guess not an actual fact of knowledge

I don't blame you the N1 already performs great even when it's stock, but since you're already rooted, I suggest you flash Amon's recovery, do a nandroid back up, and try out the available ROMs, you will get everything the stock ROM has and A LOT more, it gives you more memory, speed boost, battery savings, and the option to save aps to SD. If you aren't happy with it you can always restore it.
I'm running Enomther's ROM right now, and trust me you wont get disappointed.

sorry another question.
If i decide to root. could i backup all my current apps and recover them once i root. I have mybackup pro and will i be able to just run restore apps in a custom rom with mybackup pro?
And with rooted phones, all over the air updates by google must be manually installed right? instead of ota right?

I'm not sure how backup pro works but I think it'll restore your aps coz that's what its for also when you flash a new ROM, the first time you open your downloads list from the market, all the apps you have installed from your previous ROM will be available for download. Note that this only works the first time you open market, so make sure you don't exit the market until your done installing all, or you won't see them again.
Yes you wont get OTA updates when you're rooted, but this is not a big deal since the devs update their ROM as soon as Google releases an update, often, they even get the leaked versions and incorporate it in their ROMs, so you'll be running the updated version of the N1 way before the stock N1's get it.

This is actually incorrect. The kernal needs to be updated to be able to use ether of the tethering apps. With the stock rom, there isn't much you can do with a rooted phone. In fact, its almost a waste to root unless your going to run a custom ROM. I use and trust Enomther's ROM's. VERY stable and capable of using tether apps, apps2sd, has the hacked kernal that allows the full use of the 512Mb of RAM etc. etc. Check it out here.

Not sure about backup pro, but I think it should do what you need... atleast thats what ppl have said... i personally never used it..
Most cooked ROMs disable OTA updates... but if u hv stock rooted, you will get the OTA updates, but it'll most likely disable root if a new boot image is part of the OTA...

Daily people post about this. Why un-lock the bootloader (thus VOIDING your warranty) to keep a stock rom? Makes absolutely no sense. Cyanogen and Emon are trusted people that WILL NOT RELEASE ANYTHING THAT WILL BLOW UP YOUR PHONE!! There is a disclaimer for idiots that may not pay attention. If you follow directions you will never have a problem. If you end up with a problem (bootloop or alot of FCs) hop on #cyanogenmod on freenode IRC. Those guys are always willing to help you through problems, Even noobs usually.
Hardware defects will happen on stock just as they will custom ROMs. So don't waste your time un-locking, if you don't plan on running a custom ROM.

dude chill there questions i rooted my g1 and i thought it was a fun experience and i just bought a nexus one and i wanted to see if i could root it, but i really enjoy the way my nexus one runs now, its all i wanted to know

Custom Rom help!?!

I have tried a couple of custom roms and they have all worked fine at first but then after a while most of them would do something like force close whenever i try to open anything. This is getting really frustrating. I have a build 1009 and im looking at phoenix 3.0 and perception 10.0 both look really nice. Could someone tell me what im doing wrong and how to fix it. Every time i try to enable third party apps recently or something else ( I can't remember specificly what it was but it was rooting it or something) it will do the blah blah something apcore stoped working force close so right now im just going to use my phone on stock firmware and use it like normal and see what happens but could someone help me. I have used gingerclone, Assonance (force close problem), Darky 8.0 with the captivate workaround (force close problem), and maybe a few others but those are the only ones i can remember.

Custom roms are rooted with side loading enabled. So if you are trying to do this after you have the rom loaded, that could be a problem. I also would like to know what you are restoring on these roms. Should only be user apps.
To pin point your problem please provide more detail

What apps?
I do not think only going back to jh7 would cause your issue. Tell me more about what you are trying to do to enable side loading, and why you are doing it on as custom rom

I had the ones i downloaded and i sideloaded one wireless tether app a long time ago then i backed it all up with titanium backup and i would install a custom rom and it would have roms preinstalled on it. I would want to put on a different custom rom so i backed up again and the flashed back to stock the to the new rom. and i would restore all the apps including the one from previous roms. If you are asking for the specifics it would take a while and about the side loading i followed the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376 and did the method 3 it seemed to work fine until i rebooted and then it did the force close thing. And i didn't go to jh7 i went to jh6 or jh2 or something like that but im going to try going to jh7 and see if that helps.

dont restore ALL apps in Titanium Backup. safest option is "restore missing apps+data"
all the custom 2.2 roms have tethering/wifi hotspot built into them...no need for another app for it.
for custom roms, you DO NOT need to root or sideload...they are enabled by default on all custom roms.

CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.

I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.

I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.

i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them

I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash

Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.

i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah

MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.

[Q] Is Enoms 1.6 rom still the overall best for the G1?

After 3 years, I am still rocking the G1 as my MAIN everyday general use android phone. (Because honestly.. aside from a G2 HTC nothing has come out that really replaces the overall usefulness of the G1)
I still use Enoms 1.6 rom. I checked before about updating, but back then, everyone had gripes or issues, or slowdowns that didnt really make it worth updating from. Anyways, just checking on if anything is different now. For someone who uses a partitioned sd card, apps installed to SD card automatically (not just moved) and so, is there really something worth upgrading to or is enoms rom still overall the better stable rom for us G1 users? Thanks. =)

you will always get the best speed and stability out of donut roms, there are lots of good ones to chose from so take your pick there. if you want to stick with 1.6 then you still might consider the 2708+ updated radio/spl that allows for 14 more megabites of ram, you will definitely notice this! after the update just reflash your rom and a compatible kernel over it.
there nice 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 roms out there, plenty good enough for a daily driver but there are some lags compared to any good donut rom. if you want a taste try froyobylaszlo if you like it than there are lots more new roms that compare well to that.

2708+ updated radio/spl?
Usually I have about mid 20s-30 for memory free. Which seems decent for the most part, since everything else runs off the sd card. Only reason its lower since I use that compcache stuff.
As for the info, thanks, yea, figured donut is still better least for a every day use and general purpose.

Pls don't mix up RAM and internal memory. Internal memory is comparable to the hard disk of your PC, while RAM is memory which is used for executing programms.
The 2708/0013d combo will give you more RAM (112MB instead of 97MB), so most likely you can renounce on using compcache, but you will need an adapted kernel otherwise you will get bootloops.

always do a nandroid.
the method i would do is backup everything via titanium backup, back up any sms or my call log via sms backup +, then i would make sure i have all the requirements and then flash the updated radio and spl. after this i would flash whatever rom i choose (stick with your donut if youd like) then i would flash rom and a compatible kernel over it, reboot, restore and be happy. also i would make sure i have all the files i need ahead of time, this being amon_ra (may need it) radio, spl, orange.nbh (in case of emergency) my rom of choice, and kernel of choice (if needed)
this is the way i'd go about it, you can try any method youd like there are tons of threads about this update so i would recommend reading a few first
oh and even if it sounds complicated its well worth it

hanvet used enoms with the new radio/spl but i have used other 1.6 roms with it so im sure this will be fine too. just make sure you flash the appropriate kernel over the rom. if you take a look at ezterry's thread on kernels or even on the 2708+ page you will find plenty to choose from

Yes, it works. I've tried it just some minutes ago. Not sure if everything works, because I did only a quick check, but it's booting, you can log in browser is working, ...
The only thing you need to do is flashing a different kernel which supports the 2708 radio on top of the ROM. I flashed Terry's BiffTest Kernel but also the newer one should work.
If you like to get some more internal memory you could also use MTD-Partitions set to [67,2] which would give you a data partition size of almost 145MB
Btw.: I suppose I could not run such a ROM as my daily driver, it looks like it's already 10 years old ...

Hah found better rom called supertinhte 2.2 rom. Based on T-Mobile myTouch 3G.
Very Very fast ,comes with 82.19 free internal space.I think it is faster than froyo by lazlo with ramhack. Type it in google cant post link cause i am new here

I really like two [email protected] ROMs on my two G1s. I use them as my daily drivers.
I use SuperFroyo on one and I use SuperCDSIv4 (Donut) community edition (looks soooo much better than Mlign, etc...) on the other.
They are both great. I uninstalled virtually everything from SuperFroyo that I could. I can verify that you have no issue with deleting Talk, News and Weather for sure. Also, if you use another keyboard, you can delete the android keyboard. I did that on another installation. I delete stuff to have all apps internal.
SuperCSDIv4 is a little faster most of the time, but the niceties of Froyo are good too so I use and really like both. I recommend Lightning Launcher, then unistall ADW and LauncherPro if you go with Superfroyo. That launcher is hard to set up, but it is really light. Just go into themes and select "Zune" and try that. It is a cool theme and fast.

I think 2.2 is more fit for G1. some apps can't work on 1.6 ROM

True but the fastest 2.2 is slower then the fastest 1.6, if all you need is speed then donut is the way to go. You can push some apks onto donut roms that aren't found in the market but if you need some apps and other things froyo offers then you may need to move up

Apps for 2.2 arent really needed on the G1 screen, cept maybe those Authenticator apps. I have a diff android if I need those higher end apps.

I am a very proud G1 user too!
But I will suggest going too the CyanogenMod 5 Mod. With the proper tweaks, it reallly runs like a charm. Super E and Super F are also good ideas. Just google them up and look how to install them!!!!

So are people still using the volume increase thing for their G1 as well? I rem using the script and so to tweak that.

To be honest this GinSense rom is very fast and stable, its 2.3.7 using a cyanogenmod base.
There is that one problem with watching movies on it (were the sound keeps going but the video resets) but that's because its a problem with the cyanogenmod base, I know because every cyanogenmod rom I had, had this problem.
I would go to a 1.6 for speed, but then I would lose out on all the apps, and this is a quite snappy rom.

No I'm pretty sure you would need to flash your rom again from scratch and then flash a compatible kernel over that

Well I see the kernel in this thread I should be flashing, but I am very confused. Ok, my SD card has its apps installed to it, the rom auto uses it for storage. I dont know if I should just be relying on Titanium backup for a backup and restore or nandroid.
Im "open" to the idea of upgrading the rom if its speedy. I just dont wanna lose all the apps and work I had on this rom already. Just so confusing atm. Been a LONG time since I had to flash or work with the G1. (Never need to mess with something that works flawless) My other androids I flash the **** out of and update heh. My g1 is my baby, so always was careful. I wouldnt mind that extra ram tho if it really helps.
So what do you all think is the best way to secure keeping my stuff and easily update this?

Just wondering how my apps 2 sd will be, since on Enom, I did this the old school way and not the apps2sd thing. Which makes me think Titanium backup is the best way to restore apps on to a new rom (without data or should I be able to backup with data and restore with data, so used to not restoring with data)
Edit 2: Ok is is possible to do this, based on that thread. I use nandroid to backup, then do the steps, restore using nandroid and before I boot into the phone, I flash that biff any kernel thing, THEN reboot into the phone. Would that work and not lose anything?

Help installing OTA update

Okay so i messed up and geting fc issue with my text messaging app and am not able to install it from titianium backup no matter what i do (i have pro). Found /system image here and just need help installing it.
I want to keep it stock but remove bloat. Can i just copy the zip file to sd and install? or use RSD Lite?
I also read that if you replace the build.prop to and older say 2.3.4 and then try to do the ota upgrade it will work. Can anyone confirm this works and has older build.prop?

It's probably possible to fix your SMS issues but I don't know how.. maybe start by taking a look at the logs..
adb logcat .. or some logcat app from the market. You should probably start by this, unless you feel ready to jump into custom ROMs..
If all else fails you can always get a fresh system image..
But unlike the XT862.. we XT860 users on Bell don't have a leaked official SBF file to flash back to stock Bell with RSDlite/fastboot.
But we can flash a few leaked Latin America SBF files and change the language back to English/French.

The only way that I know of so far.. to get back to stock Bell is to use Willis111 file and flash it from recovery like a ROM:

Either way, I suggest you then install hashcode's safestrap so you have working custom recovery with backups and everything.. and try out the latest CM9. Safestrap will allow you to easily switch between stock and custom ROM and backup/restore your future setups in case something goes wrong in the future..

But as soon as i removed any app again using TB it breaks messaging, think i'm uninstalling something that the messaging app needs but don't seem like i'm touching anything that has to do with it.
don't really want to go into custom roms this phone is for my mom and already wasted a day on it. Just need stock with bloat removed so its a bit quicker. My HTC is all decked out on the other hand

Be careful what you uninstall in TB..
I remember having issues after deleting some yahoo thing on mine when I was stuck on stock. (Contacts would FC)
EDIT: I did freeze and/or uninstall those without any issues citrix, kobo, GPS Nav., a few games, and zoompass when I was stock.

it seems to be alright, i striped out everything such as media connect, dlna, portal etc. Just to make the phone a simple phone.
It seems when i removed the email app it was causing the messaging app to fc. The phone seems stable after a complete wipe and don't see any fc'ing.
What i don't get is if i use TB to uninstall any app i cannot get TB to restore it and the only way is to flash the system image again.
I may just flash system again and just freeze everything i don't want.

Yesterday I just loaded my first custom ROM on my phone, using the safestrap method and threw on CM9... so far I think it's really sweet. I really hope we get Official ICS but if we don't I'm going to stick with a custom ICS rom.

I can confirm you shouldn't uninstall or freeze the Email app (universal inbox thing) as it will indeed FC a few other things..
What I do in TB for stuff I want to completely uninstall is this:
-convert to user app (as opposed to system app)
-back it up
-uninstall as if it was any other app (from TB or not..)
If I want to restore.. I restore it from TB.. which reinstalls it as a user app.. then change it back to system app from TB.
Alternative: manually backup and rename or move the apk in /system..
And put it back in to restore.
In any case.. a reboot might be a good idea after restoring..
PS: CM9 has been my daily driver for a while now.. I had to go back to stock for a few minutes the other day (needed the HDMI mirror..) and I really wouldn't go back to stock as my daily..(Safestrap works wonders for switching between the two though..)

phone came with 2.3.6 so no OTA, you dump works wonders. I may flash it again and uninstall thinks like kobo, citrix etc and freeze others like universal inbox.
What does freezing do anyways, does it stop it from loading in RAM?
