Hi all,
I have a new i896 with Rogers and have no intention of using it on the Rogers network therefore really need to unlock it. SGS unlocker did not work for me and all the other ways listed do not seem to work for me... I tried to purchase a code from cellunlockingcodes.com. They said the code was available but then refunded me as they were unable to provide me with a code.
My second concern is the upload speed seems to be capped at 200 kbps even in Wifi. I guess this is a software limitation? I`ve seen some posts regarding this with the ATT Captivate and a sw update should fix it. But I do not want to stay stuck with a device that is capped at 200 kbps upload.
Anyone has any idea why my speed is limited at 200 kbps and also is there a specific post regarding the unlocking of the i896 unlocking??
Thanks. Emmanuel.

200Kb upload it more then you realize. It's a phone, not a computer. Do not expect high upload speeds especially since we don't have HSUPA.
Secondly, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831569
That should work for your unlock. Read the OP carefully and follow the directions as written. And yes I know it says Froyo in the thread title. The only thing that is different is that when it tells you to do anything with copying to the sdcard, you need to type /sdcard instead of /mnt/sdcard as the latter is for Froyo only.

200 kbps is nothing my friend.
Explain to me why over the same Wifi connection using the same speed test.net app and testing at the exact same time in the exact same location I get such different results:
Xperia X10 = 1700 kbps
Captivate = 200 kbps
Tested 20 times I could not believe it!! When the upload test starts for half a second it goes up to close to 1000 kbps and then drops to 200.
I dont`t understand what HSUPA comes and changes if I`m using Wifi??? I have not even tested it over 3G as device is still locked to Rogers and I`m a Telus user.
If I dont find a solution ASAP this piece of crap is going back to ROGERS!!!
200 kbps is pathetic, and not acceptable.
I'm not well versed in the i896 and what the differences are, but something is wrong.
Here's what is possible:

I tested mine when I woke up. 3.4 megabits upload on wifi. Maybe you just got a ****ty unit. Exchange it for another?
Either way, I still don't feel like 200kb is slow by any means. Low, maybe, but not slow.

I haven't had the same behaviour on my i896.
Wireless upload maxes out at whatever the underlying connection supports. Half a meg at home, up to 2 megs elsewhere.
And you're right, HSUPA won't have any bearing on wireless upload speeds. FWIW, I haven't even had anything below 350kbps upload out in the wild on 3G, which isn't terrible since HSUPA isn't in the house.
Assuming you're not running the X10 and Captivate literally simultaneously on a router on top of a 2 meg upload connection, I'd say you got a bum phone.

I rooted my Rogers Captivate, then followed the unlock steps posted above, and can confirm that they do work. The only problem I had was the absence of "cp" utility. Not sure whether it's because it is missing in Rogers firmware or because I haven't installed BusyBox yet. I had to use "cat" with ">" redirection to copy files around. Unfortunately, that method is not for the faint of heart, the only reason I attempted it is because I admin a Linux farm at work.
A poster in another i896 thread commented that cellunlocker.net have updated their unlock codes to include the Rogers i896 captivate.
Haven't tried it yet, but it is another unlocking possibility.
KV
EDIT: Hmmm seems another poster indicated that the cellunlocker code didn't work.

Some posters complain that this results in editing your IMEI number. Not sure what's going on just yet
I used the method from the link above. It worked for me just fine. I didn't have to edit my IMEI, just enter the unlock and unfreeze codes of my choice into the online patching utility. The method is a bit scary though. If you can pay 10-20 bucks to get a proper code online, do it, though it sounds like it's not possible as of yet.

Is there any possibility of making the tilt work on T-Mo 3G with some kind of hardware swap. Please don't flame me just want thought from someone with experience in the field. I started a topic on T-mobile coming out with a branded kaiser with front camera with the FCC filing a while ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=369356. Theres links to them testing it, and manuals (https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=791453&native_or_pdf=pdf).
So maybe with a hardware adjustment it could work, id be willing to spend under $75 if someone could get it done.
Well, basically you would have to do two things:
1. Change out the radio to one that supports UMTS 1700
2. Flash a ROM that allows you to see and utilize UMTS 1700
That being said, I'm not sure if this is a tear-phone-apart-and-swap-radio project or replace-the-whole-thing project...
Oh, and your link doesn't work.
Updated links
----------------------
How much would parts and labor cost for this to happen?
Here's what this antenna looks like if it helps doesn't look too complicated.
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=809977&native_or_pdf=pdf
As an engineer, I very much doubt that it would be possible to change the radio. You might have more luck looking for undocumented support for the 1700MHz spectrum.
The radio is going to be heavily integrated into the ROM, which you don't have access to the source code to. Even if you were by some miracle able to solder on a new antenna and various chips, you would have to rewrite a new Radio ROM from scratch, and make it 100% compatible with the real radio ROM to fool the main rom into using it.
It could just be as simple as a radio flash if there was a radio out there that supported it and the Emobile version is the same with just a different radio rom. I say this because back when I had Motorola's, some of the phones that had quadband variants could be converted to a quadband phone from triband through a series of firmware flashes enabling the fourth band.

True....but as you said, if the radio in our current phones support 1700 with a flash, then yes, it will be easy.
And I agree on the Motorolas...I've had a handful of them before I went with my Tilt. The V3xx was the famous triband but really quadband with firmware flashes phone.
A guy in boston is saying that his worked on T-Mo 3G for like 45 min but hes not sure if its a glitch. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2181372&postcount=19

The part you have pointed out is the antenna. You would have to replace the radio chipset which is soldered on the main circuit board of the phone. If you can solder that by hand, you are inhuman!

MEGA bump to get someone on to cracking this thing... it has been documented that the Tilt/Kaiser has been tested at 1700mhz band, so it may be possible to get it working through Firmware update. This would be great news for us United States T-Mobile users that want to use our Tilts/Kaisers with T-Mo's 3G

Wait... what are you saying? That a T-Mobile rep can walk you through the process of getting it to work on their 3G!?!
Hey guys,
I have the att 3G version of N1. The ROM definitely says H ( I am on CM6) on the statusbar however I don't think I am getting HSUPA on the phone.
D/L: 1.6 to 2mbps
U/L: 200 to 300 kbps (also when reading this value on speedtest, gage stutters)
Recently I tested a few ROMs on the newer Samsung Captivate with a HSUPA kernel where I get :
D/L: 3.5 to 4mbps
U/L: 1.5 to 1.8 mbps
These two tests were done at the same position on my desk.
After few weeks of comparison/usage I find the Captivate can't probably compete with N1 as per OS/Hardware integration. The GPS is non-functinal till date!
I decided to move along with N1 but do miss the blazing HSUPA speeds of the Captivate. Hard to believe N1 can't do it. I tried looking for some solution, came up with none. I did a fresh CM6 install and can't even come close to those speeds.
Am I missing some tweaks? I believe the CM6 for N1 is primarily designed for the T-mobile N1, but I may be wrong. If you guys get better speeds (real HSUPA) than 1.6/0.2mpbs and aware of tweaks etc for att N1, please guide.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks!

-adb pull /system/build.prop build.prop
-Edit that file with something like Notepad++
-Search for (or add) ro.ril.hsxpa=2 or ro.ril.hsxpa=1 (some people report better results with 2)
-You can also check ro.ril.gprsclass=12 (by default it may be 10, so you can try 12)
-Save the file

I don't think so...
I changed these settings at ~9:00am @ 73% battery. Its 4pm and with moderate usage and a couple of video playing, its still at 63%.
Oh its already 4, time to go home!
For me on Enom these settings were not in there so I gave them a try.. Made no difference.
At work I routinely see 2 mbit down, 700kbit up during the day.. On weekends I see 2.5/1.3 give or take.
Here at home I generally see 2-3mbit down, 1-1.5mbit up.
All using Speedtest in the phone.. Tethering the speeds generally go up significantly.
Great improvement for me....

of course the i896 is more like the TRUE captivate
comes with side-loading and usb tethering NOT disabled.
Don't see that on Andromeda.
Audience chip is only available on the (kb1?) stock roms, or modified stock roms. (Idk if andromeda is i9000)
andromeda is a i9010 rom. that's the armani captivate. looks identical to the captivate with a different back cover and logos but have no idea if it has an audienec chip or non att phones are allowed to have a stock rom that uses it.
HHHmmmm....over 200 views and not one response answering my question.
Is it safe to assume that no one knows? Or are there people lurking in the shadows with information
AND has anyone other than Miami tried looking for this menu?
If you just want a confirmation, I don't have that option in Andromeda either.
Not on Continuum v4 either. But I will keep looking for it in a setting menu.

Is there any official information that shows that it does come with the chip? Got to wonder why, if it has one, that the Rogers ROM doesn't appear to support it.

i think the rogers captivate almost certainly has the audience chip, perhaps the i9010 as well but the question is whether or not it uses it? and if we really need it?
also somebody must know, i mean there is so much talk about which modem enables it, if they know it is in the modem they must know what else needs to be present for it to work, whether it be rom related kernel related or both.
i mean what does this chip supposedly do that wouldn't already be accomplished in software that would be easy on resources? i imagine it is just a compressor/limiter and maybe has some vocal recognition to seek out non vocal sounds and play them over the signal in a reveresed phase. and maybe equalized to help tune in on the human voice. not at all that extravigant. is there something this tiny chip can do that would eat resources on the powerful 1ghz processor? why cant someone impliment better noise reduction into the kernel or rom? it seems to me that someone like supercurio with knowledge of the paths the audio takes would have no trouble enhancing call quality via a kernel module or an app or mod to the rom.

I have a noise reduction option there as well... Like I said in my first post..these 2 settings are not connected, I can turn them on and off independently of each other.
If you're going to express an opinion, you ought to state your reason for having it. What's your evidence for the presence of an A1026 chip in the Rogers phone? Are there any ads or other material that state that it has the chip? AT&T makes a point of promoting the fact that has the chip, does Rogers? The chip requires hardware support; two microphones are needed.
From what I can see (go to lloydwatts.com for more info about the chip's capabilities) the chip offloads a great deal of signal processing, relieving the cpu of the burden of doing the complex processing. In my experience manufacturers don't add processing hardware unless it's really required for adequate performance.
So, while I don't know for certain whether the Rogers phone has the chip or not, I have yet to see any clear evidence that it does. And, I think it's quite clear that there's no way to duplicate its performance with software alone.

because according to an owner, the board is marked as i897. not i896. it appears that it is identical in every way. yes it is possible for them to exclude it on the machines and just reuse the board, so it is just an assumption.
is there any way to ping the chip? maybe it can be tested?
Not much going on in GT-i9305 section so let see what this phone can really do...
All kinds of Speed Tests, Benchmarks and Battery Stats are welcome
Network: 3G or 4G???
Just wondering how it goes on DC-HSPA+??? Here in UK, Three is fastest so far... I'm getting speeds 15-25Mbps DL / up to 4.5Mbps UL in many places!! Who need expensive LTE with crazy data capping (500MB - £36/pm) and speeds 10-20Mbps... Joke...
To check what kind of 3G connection you have while testing:
1: dial *#0011# (phone will go in to Service Mode)
2: press home button
3: open and run SpeedTest
4: press&hold home button and switch back to Service Mode...
5: on the bottom of screen look for "DC_HSPA+ : 1(enabled) 0(disabled)"
Battery:
Many people reported bad battery life but I'm very happy with it so I'll share some of my tricks how to get more juice....
My current set up: Pandoriam ROM v6.6, latest Perseus Kernel: no UV, no OC, no tweaks, Modem: BUALI6, Network: 3UK (DC-HSPA)
1. Custom ROM & kernel is recommended but NOT essential (most of them includes battery tweaks also they bloat free)
2. Install BBS and check what's drinking your juice... Some of apps are heavy drinkers (Facebook, Twitter etc....) so keep eye on battery after you install new app(s). Don't use Juice Defender, it makes things worse.
3. Disable Google Now & Locations (main juice drinker)
4. Install "Fast Dormancy Toggle" from Play Store and disable it. It safe to use. If you don't use 4g, change Network Mode to WCDMA only. BTW bad signal reception draining more juice as well.
5. Keep screen brightness on manual, as low as possible... obviously
6. Use inverted apps and dark wallpaper if possible, stay away from live wallpapers...
7. Only If you know what you doing, install app called" NoBloat Free" or any other similar app and disable/freeze unimportant processes draining your battery. (Exchange and Samsung Push Services are heavy drinkers)
8. AutoSync & NFC - OFF!!
9. Use Original Samsung 1A charger, don't use your laptop to charge phone....
10. Keep WiFi ON only if you need it. To make things easy, in Advanced WiFi settings, we have WiFi Timer. (can be used to keep it ON/OFF automatically, through the night for example)

I think that that test was as I passed through Brisbane, Oz.
The Thunder Down Under - (more like lighning)
This was me at drinks on Friday on the outskirts of town, Brisbane Australia on Telstra 4G network. I took about 4 tests and this was the average one.
Samsung Galaxy SIII - I1905T

No worries mate. Awesome speed!!! Here in UK You won't get even half of it on 4G!! That's why we're using DC HSPA+, it goes up to 20Mbps and you can have Unlimited data for £15.90 /pm!!!!!
I'm going to change the Thread Title to "Post your Speed Tests, Benchmarks, Battery Stats...."

Yea 4G in London is terrible, I know. I popped in to the EE store the other day to test out the speed. THEY DIDNT HAVE the speedtest.net app. I was like so how are we to test what 4G speeds we are getting? The assistant replied with a really condescending tone "I'm pretty sure such geeky app wont be needed for the average consumer". I replied, "So why do broadband suppliers advertise "Xmb broadband"? SO obviously people would want to know how fast their internet would be." fruking donut.
My mate was driving Through Auburn Sydney, And he got 75Mbps Down... I am based in Sydneys southwest On the edge of 4G & 3G+ coverage I average around 15mbps So
All I can Say is Telstra 4G kills it ay! haha Cant wait till they upgrade the coverage soon we may have all areas with this crazy speed
Deleted.. (damn phone)
Can you guys please turn off lte and do a speed test in h+, like the OP asked?

Here the DC-HSPA+ is faster in many places and that's why I've asked for 3G tests... Just being curious....

the problem with the H+ test is know one knows if they are on the high DC type H+ or the normal H+ it doesnt differentiate , so theres no point someone will post H+ when you think its DC it may be only plain old H+

It's easy to check that, just press *#0011#
ok and what am i supposed to be seeing there to know its on the higher H+ ? I can see the first line changing regulary RCC: DCH for about 4 seconds and then it went back to RCC: FACH for another 5seconds and I can now only see the 3G symbol and its sitting on RRC: UPCH I definately am not in a good area to test anyway so I guess ill play around when im out and about. Ill compare it with. But yeh like I said you can be in a middle of a test and it could of changed how would you know unless you have 2 screens one showing you exaclty what your on whilst your doing a speedtest

What is you Carrier? I´m on vodafone Portugal, they advirtise as being the only Carrier with 42Mbits DC HSPA but they seem to have that inconsistence with FACH and DCH as well. By the way, I looked it up, those are 2 types of HSPA+ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Resource_Control)

I've checked and look at screenshots. One is while downloading (Speed Test running in background) the second just connected (steady CPCH). On the bottom we have active connections... you can see 0 or 1 next to type of connection.
Now it's easy to check.

I am on Telstra Australia.. Well that makes sense As my phone was idle And i was staring at the screen. So I guess If i did a speedtest those mode will change.
But still It doesnt rectify the fact that while someone is doing a speedtest we do not know exactly what connection we are on as Carriers who offer DC also have Normal Hspa+ aswell and if in the wrong area it may switch modes while doing the test without even knowing
As that DC_HSPA will change to normal HSPA if you are not in the correct area, when I had that screen on i did not see DC_HSPA I only saw HSPA+
Edit : You see mine was changing from DC_HSPA to HSPA from one moment to another like I said you would have to be in a STRONG DC area to really test DC speeds

Hi Guys,
I just adquire my Note 4 from a friend and i'm having lots of problems to conect to the network in my country, i live outside of USA (Dominican Republic), somethimes it makes and receive calls, somethimes i don't receive any calls but can make it but when i make it the other person can't listen to me (i've tried with diferent phone numbers) also the internet 4G/LTE is no consistent. In summary, i'm having lots of signal\internet issues with my Note 4.
My question is, is that a hardware issue or i need to try with other baseband or modem to fix this?
please give me some light as i'm losing my mind with.
thanks in advance...
Miggs
I would first create a new apn specific to your carrier...
Then i would check to see if in fact your running the latest modem for the device..
But start with the apn...

Thank you for your help @Flashvetrin i checked the APN and it is correct, my modem is also the latest available UVU1ANK4 (not 100% sure did not find any other on internet) for t-mobile stock rom, some say this could be internal hardware problems but i dont think so because the phone make some calls and internet works sometimes but is not consistant.
i made a hard reset and i worked for some minutes but lost signal and went back to this behaivor again.
really don't know what to do now..
thanks in advance.

Can you take the device in for a sim upgrade???? Does the device recieve stronger signal anywhere in your area???? Interesting how your saying that after a hard reset it helps..
Try using short cut master from the playstore use #2263 launch0 and run 4 thru 8 ....

It is most likely coverage problem. My understanding is that biggest cell provider in DR is company which uses cdma technology. Do a little research which gsm provider has better coverage in your area and if lte bands used are compatible with your note4.

I've done all of the steps you mention and nothing gets better, it just works when he wants (most of the time it donesnt). I will try installing a ROM just for testing purposes.
I changed my SIM card for the newest LTE capable one. @darekz im on Claro and they are GSM\LTE.
Thanks in advance,
Miggs
I did do quick search and appears that claro using lte band 4 which is supported by Tmobile note 4. Just to check can you disable lte in phone settings and see if daya transfer improves over 4g. With poor lte coverage phone will constantly fallback to 4g and keep looking for lte.

Hi @Flashvetrin,
The baseband is K4, i flashed the NJ and it keeps almost the same behaivor, i can say K4 is a bit better as at least i can make calls, no calls with NJ.
build.prop, i dont know how to edit it and i'm note certainly sure about it as it can brick my phone.
Let's assume it's a hardware issue, is the hardware in charge of control the siganl interchangable, can i buy it on internet, or is my phone destined to be a clip for papers??
BTW, i installed another ROM and it's the same, no way.
Thanks for all your help,

Question what was the behavior of the phone like when it was in the us????
Fyi there are things that can be changed..
(ALOT) of things in the build prop..
your phone wont brick....
I promise..
But if your not comfortable i understand.
It may be that the modem hsic just isnt or doesnt respond on "this" paticular network..
The phone that you compared it to was it purchased in the us as well...
If its infact an International Version it may have some bearing.....
No its not a paper weight...but i am starting to run out of ideas/solutions...
Please be paitent.. im gonna consult some else as well..
