Regarding Quality of HTC currently

Hi there.
I am an owner/user of Nexus 1/HTC Desire.
I have several shortcomings of HTC, as an experience so far. Very bad speakers, really bad screen (not true multi-touch), dust under screen - and some other minor niggles. Its a shame, because I like the design/material of them usually, especially compared to Samsung/LG competitors.
Now, looking to the future, I am guessing that the screen issue is somewhat fixed - but what about things like the camera/speakers, in the newer models.
By newer of course, I mean the Incredible S - and the soon to come HTC products (the dual core/3D ones).
Right now, I am thinking between the Galaxy S2/iphone 5/possibly LG 3D - due to the bad experience I had with HTC, I haven't even given them a chance. Am I in the wrong? Have things really improved? I cannot live with a pansy speaker on my phone, it is terrible, or those reoccuring camera issues.

It's tough to say.... the 2 HTC phones i've had (HTC Hero and HTC Incredible S) have both been very good. However, the reason i've waited this long to get a new phone is because of numerous reports/reviews citing issues.
The nexus one i believe suffered from poor screen brightness, making it difficult to see in bright lights, and some of the dirt under the screen.
The Desire HD had awful battery life and some reviews stated that the battery casing feels very flimsy and breakable.
As you say, the simple fact is that the design and quality of materials is still higher than the main competitors. My other options were Motorola Atrix, which i didn't go for because it's locked to AT&T, and iphone 4, which i didn't go for because i genuinely preffered the look and feel of the incredible s, plus i have bought quite a few android apps!
I think most users are spoilt for choice nowadays... a lot of really great phones coming out this summer.
If you want to wait for it iPhone 5 or the next iteration of "Nexus" will probably be my top choices, followed closely by the Moto Atrix.

Good luck! IS won't let you down in terms of build quality. If you can wait, get iphone 5, nexus x(whatever it will be called) or moto atrix.

hmm multitouch really works ^^ and this is my first android phone where i can set the volume lower o.0 normally i had to put it as loud as possible.. now its on halve.... for the rest im very happy with this phone, especially the sort of rubber case so it feels very good
as for phones as the samsung, nexus etc. they dont feel like a phone to me.. they are very light weight... dont get me wrong but i do like to hold something that feels well and for the iphone hmm.... its part of macintosh.. im sorry but i really dont like them ^^ nor the possibilitys of their devices... i know you can do allot with em also when you jailbreaked em etc.etc. but still.. my flavour goes to android
about the battery life... hmm i hook it up every night but im sure i could do 1.5 day with it and i use it very heavily, gaming, wifi, bluetooth etc.etc.

This, all of it. Have the volume on half aswell.
Can do 1,5 day on a charge, thats using it the entire day/evening with the screen actually on and using wifi and bluetooth. Using it to e-mail, making calls, and listen to music. (yes I was quite surprised at that)
I've only had HTC smartphones myself, had a problem with my Touch Pro 2 once, e-mailed them about it and they exchanged it without problems and very quickly. Very satisfied with that service when I needed it for once.

Getting an HD7, some questions about the device.

1. Is the gunmetal/chrome/shiny band around the device metal? It looks like the plastic on my galaxy s in the pictures, but a bunch of reviewers have said that it's metal.
2. How do you guys like windows phone 7?
3. Is there any compelling reason not to buy the phone? (I can't think of any new wp7 phones coming out on tmobile)

My first suggestion is to make sure if any the feature currently missing from WP& matter to you such as the MMS Video feature. IMHO, WP7 is the best cell OS I've used. It's very fast & does what it can do very well. GPS is much faster than it was on my old TP2. Been a while since I played with Android to compare the GPS on it. What I mean is it locates you very fast. On my TP2, it'd take a few mins just to find a satellite. Keep in mind in order to get GPS, I had to unlock my device & load a patched Navigon Select XAP & load my maps for the USA. As for the hardware, it is very nice IMO. The only metal on it though is the kick stand & a small piece on the back below the battery door.

I plan on keeping my galaxy s until I've made a decision. I can sell one or the other. (My friend offered me his HD7 for $200 which seems like a good price judging by what I'm seeing on ebay and craigslist)
From what I can tell, it has everything that I need.
Another question that I'd like to add is how is wifi support on the os? I currently have no data plan and run only on wifi. This has worked well for me as my school has free wifi in most places.

WiFi works great for me & doesn't seem to effect battery life as badly as it did on my old TP2. I keep it on WiFi when ever I'm at home.

WP7 is very solid, but it's not as developed as Android. As the above post suggests, you should review the feature-set and make sure there aren't any critical absences.
I don't quite agree on the build quality. Having used an iPhone 3G, a Nexus One, and an HD2, the HD7 falls short IMO. It has an attractive design, no doubt, but the materials/execution feel somewhat cheap in comparison. My HD7 for example has a rattly battery door and originally had terrible buttons. HTC fixed the camera button, but the other three are a bit squishy feeling. If you buy the phone, make sure you check the buttons!
$200 is a pretty solid price IMO. I bought one with the button quality problems (mint otherwise) for $250, and I thought that was a really good price.
Having said all that, I'm not sure if it's your best bet with regard to the Wifi. As far as I know (and I could be TOTALLY wrong), the Wifi shuts off when the screen turns off, and there is no way to change this behavior. Don't think you'll get notifications with no data plan. I recently switched from a Vibrant (and I also don't have a data plan), and it was/is somewhat of a problem. Again though, there might be a way to control the Wifi standby.

Wait, that chrome on the sides is plastic covered with paint? It feels much more solid that the plastic bezel on the Vibrant though.

i've had 6 android devices in the past and i traded my android for the HD7 and i am very pleased with that decision.
Wp7 is so fast and smooth! its just beautiful and i love the metro ui. my mom has the galaxy s 4g and android just feels so stale and dated compared to how beautiful and smooth wp7 is. yea its not as developed but the things this phone does is genius! people, photos, music & video hubs are all genius and has nice things that i would truly miss if i ever switched to another OS. you find lil things that you think are genius lol. like for me ima HUGE picture freak and the fact i can go directly into picture taking while the screen is off is genius for me plus the camera software is the easiest i have used plus its fast.
wp7 is the most original os and i love it! i dont have to worry about force closes or downloaded utilities too keep my phone running at peak performance. the type of apps i dowloaded on android are completely different now. i download fun stuff and not utilities. i was a power user with android flashing the latest roms and re setting up my phone every week or so and now i dont have to worry about that.
your gmail account syncs flawless with wp7 as if its a android phone lol, and im talking contacts, calender, and email and top it all off its push email!
the data on the works fast. i had the g2 and mytouch 4g but things seem to load faster on the HD7.
i really like the OS an im very satisfied with it! i cant wait to see whats in store for the future on the OS. people truly dont give it enough credit

So I went to VZW to check it out (D2G owner)

I finally got a chance to go to the store to check one of these out. I wanted to see what all the hype was about and if I could justify spending the money to upgrade my D2G (not elligible for upgrade yet).
First Impressions:
- Screen: I read all the hysteria about how bad a pixelated screen looks etc. Some people said that you could barely see the difference unless youre holding the right up to your eye holes.. They are wrong. You can easily see the difference holding it at normal viewing distance. If you like the screen on the D2G it will take some serious adjusting to. It simply 'seems' like outdated tech and looks cheap.
-4G: This is the first 4G device I have ever used. It is shockingly quick (had 2 bars in Central NJ). I download a few apps (dolphin browser) and went to a couple of web pages. I also ran the speed test 19.6mb down // 3.99 upload. I went to youtube and loaded an HD video and the video never stuttered once (video time never caught up to buffering). I was very impressed with 4G and that is mainly the reason I wanted to take a look at the Droid Bionic.
- Stress testing:? Not sure what to call this but I wanted to see if I could make the phone hang up. Im not even sure if these are applicable to the hardware, but I ran 2 apps. The first of which was Google Maps, it didnt seem to be any faster than on my D2G. Scrolling isnt any more impressive neither is zooming in, I felt like the rendering speed was the same.
- Moto BLUR/UI whatever its called these days: Its still sucky you will want to root and change it.
I also downloaded a PDF and scrolled around that. Same issue, rendering doesnt seem any faster.
Im not even sure if something like this can be critiqued because these things arent even smooth on a regular PC.
Its clearly a good phone if you can deal with the screen thing. Once roms and stuff are developed for it, it will be even better. I would probably pull the trigger if i was elligible for an upgrade.
Just my 2 cents.

Then I'm in denial and deny it! lol.. its not the best screen, but its not horrible! I think its quite ok.. the pixels don't bother me much, my battery life kicks butt compared to tbolt! Then again, im not one for watching movies on my phone I got a Sammy LED at home for that...

For those of us who:
-would rather watch a movie on something larger than a 4 inch screen.
-would rather fap to pr0n from a pc
-would rather play games on a pc, xbox 360 or ps3
-care about performance of the best 4g radio and so far the best processor/ram combo
OR have a connection for incredibly good deals on phones and don't really care...
Yeah, denial is the right term.

Like i've been saying - Rendering performance will not be hardly any different until Icecream comes out. Gingerbread is singlethreaded.. you're not going to see the OS take any advantage over dual core for a while.
The good news is that it's still just as fast as any other single core phone. If any app is coded to take advantage of dual core, it will shine in those but in average usage - you're not seeing any performance advantage here.

The pentile screen doesn't bother me. I can tell at times but still doesn't impact me. I would rather have better battery life than a non-pentile screen. I don't want the Thunderbolt battery issues.
After removing a bunch of bloatware, I kinda dig the new Blur. I was using CM7 with ADW Ex on top. It is running so butter smooth! I will probably go back to ADW Ex when a ROM comes out without Blur.
I got 30 days to try it out but I might exchange it for the HTC Vigor. Depends on what happens the next 30 days.

While it's true it's barely worth mentioning. "YET" or "UNTIL" are key vocabulary for this CPU.

Coming from a droidx here... the screen looks a-ok to me on the bionic.

I've been using htc phones since the ppc6600. Battery life has been terrible since then, and I don't see it getting any better, unless they do something magical. 6600:terrible battery life. 6700 terrible battery life. 6800: terrible battery life. Incredible : incredibly terrible battery life.
There seems to be a trend here. I do believe I am done with htc.
The battery life alone, to me, is worth the money.

No doubt that the screen is disappointing, but LTE is absolutely insane, and the phone is noticeably faster than the Sensation running a Sense ROM. Overall, I'm very pleased with my first Motorola device, and it was a steal at $179 from Amazon.

I think that people are being to anal about the screen. I use the phone in direct sunlight now and it looks incredible. The text looks super sharp and you dont have to put your hand on top of the screen to block sun light. this phone is amazing. and yes better phones will be out and when you get that awesome phone that will come out in a few months another better phone will be out after that. is a never ending cycle. I love the bionic and i dont regret buying it. When i want to watch porn I use my computer or my galaxy 10.1 tablet. If you really really need a porn fix the bionic could take care of it too.

It's Sense. Put CyanogenMod on any HTC device, and you get amazing battery life. Can't wait for it on the Bionic.

Sense didn't exist until after the 6800. I had cm7 on my DInc, it still sucked, battery wise anyway.

The hate for the screen is warranted, and not warranted. I don't know how to put that. I was adamantly against a PenTile screen and it was almost enough to put me off on this phone. I had seen it in store and focused on the screen, and it just annoyed me. Then I got some real time with it and it's seriously a bunch of nonsense. The screen is sharp, great colors, great in daylight. It's not AMOLED level there but it's a do-it-all screen.
The 4G is super fast, and the battery life is amazing. I came from a Droid X and it's an impressive phone. Suck it up on the screen and you'll forget about it in a day.

The "VERY" part of your statement, stands out as if you know something the rest of "non" Verizon Wireless employee's would know... if you dont work for verizon wireless please share what these options are..if you do work for vzw i can understand if you dont because you dont want to get a lawsuit.

If I'm spending $200 to $300 on an smartphone it better have a damn good screen. No offense but the Bionic does not have a good screen. Yeah at times it can look good but anything with green for instance suddenly brings out the crap factor. If it doesn't bother you then enjoy it. As for me I'll wait until either the HTC or Samsung offerings are out both of which will have a better screen over the Bionic.

Thinking about going to go pick a vivid up right now, im currently using the captivate and i hate it more then life. If anyone already has complaints about it please list them i wanna know if this phone is another captivate. Thanks

Other than being slightly awkward as in a little bit heavy and the volume button nothing bad to say about it.

Its thick and will be even thicker with a case on it. It has terrible stutter pretty much everywhere especially in tapatalk app. My biggest gripe is that it records 1080p in 3gp format and at least my phone, records with a very choppy quality (not sure why).

The volume button is way too easy to press by accident. Seems to take up too much space on the side of the phone. As far as stuttering every where that nohcho is talking about I have never experienced a stutter once and None of my videos recorder where choppy.

I came from a Captivate.. I'll tell you, it's a step up. It's quick, and is actually proportioned rather well, and I have kind of smaller hands. The volume key is large and user friendly and no, it's not like you'll be hitting it all the time when you don't mean to. It is heavier than most other phones including the Captivate, but it's a weight you will easily adjust to. the construction is excellent, it feels like it's made out of rock.

You won't be sorry. I came from an SE X10, and it's a massive step forward. It's a great phone, other than it gets a little warm and the battery life is less than stellar.

I came from an atrix, to an atrix 2, to the vivid. If it hadn't come out that day I was going for the focus a. I wasn't going back to a Samsung device. Had a captivate, had an infuse, and had an international sgs2. Liked the captivate the most to be honest. Now I have the vivid and the only way I'm giving it back is if a better htc device comes very soon. I have an upgrade coming in march and another in July so I should be set with hi end toys for the year hopefully.

I came from a Hero & Incredible S. I have to say I love the Vivid. I know some people complain about stutter, but I've noticed this in only one place: my Gmail label list, and I have about 50 or 60 labels... Everywhere else, things are soooo smooth! It does get a bit warm, and the battery life isn't exceptional, but it doesn't seem too bad. I've pretty much been playing with it nonstop, so I'm sure battery life will improve when I stop using it 24/7!

Although a little different, I really like the design of this phone. Can't believe people complain about it after they actually bought the phone? I really like the screen on it, the qHD looks awsome, also the thin bezels on sides, top and bottom. Looking at it, the device is pretty much only screen. It getting a little warm but honestly not warmer than my old Atrix. My only complaint is: (edit for later, I didn't find one yet)

The only things I can complain about is lack of data speed (I'm looking at you ATT) and no unlocked bootloader. Very thing else is great for me.

I feel like the odd guy out.....I came from an iPhone 4! This is my first Android phone, and so far it is awesome. I haven't had any issues with it. The screen is so nice on it. It was closer to the res of the iPhone than the Skyrocket was.
I also live in a 4G LTE area......makes the web and youtube very fast.

sounds like you got a bad unit...
Mine is buttery smooth everywhere... I have seen no stutter or FCs on any apps since purchse.
Only mainstream issue I have is with the (expectantly) poor battery life.
Other more technical issues:
The underclocked CPU and the Locked Bootloader (yes, I know... the CPU at 1.5 would hurt battery more... but I LOVE power!!!)

Yeah I don't like it that it record 1080 video in 3gp mode. But clarity is there.

I don't like how video records in 3GP. That to me is just absurd... don't see any logic behind it, maybe it's to conserve space.
Otherwise, I love it. Patiently awaiting bootloader unlock, root, and then some ROMs. But it has only been a few days, we have plenty of time.
I love the data speeds. Although I don't live in an LTE area (I am about 25 miles West of NYC), the mobile data is blazingly fast. I haven't bothered doing any "speed tests" or any of that bull**** - if it feels and is fast enough to satisfy its user, then it is fast.
The build quality is crazy. I've never held a phone - especially one you must remind yourself is made mostly of plastic - and thought it to be so sturdy. The weight at first is a downer, but you quickly get used to it. It actually adds a lot of solidity to the device. Compared to the Vivid.. Samsungs, particularly the Galaxy devices, are made of paper. Seriously. The screen is a beauty as well, and you can't beat the resolution.
Only thing I don't like is the ear piece. On my phone at least, it's staticy and just overall not the best, although it's not bad either. Battery life I am fine with - I can squeeze around 12 hours out of it with moderate-heavy use, and although that's less than my Captivate, I consider primarily the fact that this is an LTE phone to justify it.

been reading a lot of negative comments about the ear piece. mine is the same way, but its not so bad to pass up the phone in my opinion. I hardly talk on the phone since I am primarily a texter so it really doesnt bother me. Mine doesnt seem so staticy.. to me it makes the other person sound like the car talking through a tube or something. its weird but its clear.

My pros and cons with the Nexus 5

Hi Everyone,
I've had this phone for a good week now and got some pros and cons:
Pros
- The screen is absolutely beautiful. One of the default wallpapers is the view of a mountain with a pinkish hue - the detail is unbelievable
- The overall response time of the UI is fast as all hell
- the feel of the phone in my hand is amazing. the rubbery back (black model only) and sharp sides is beautiful
- I have not had any issues with camera. I think the pictures and video quality is fantastic. Shutter speed might not be as fast as some other phones, but im sure that can be fixed with software/roms
Cons
- Battery is random. One day i will have 2h of screen on time, 1h phone call and battery will last me 18+ hours. The next day, i will have 1h of screen time and phone will drop to 60%. My battery is currently at 68% with 5hours off charge and 1h of screen time and 1h of phone calls
- the vibration function is outright useless. I can barely feel it when i type, let alone when its on a desk and in vibe only mode
- Call quality is some what random. Sometimes the person on the other end can't hear me properly until i move my phone slightly further away from my mouth, or sometimes closer. When that happens, they say that it sounds like im talking in a tunnel.
- the Exchange email app / email.apk is very frustrating. It looks nicer than it did on 1.5 - 4.3, however it force closes very often and using the Reply All button on an email automatically adds myself to the CC, which is very frustrating. That being said, im sure the excahnge email itself has a lot of drain on my battery too, so keep that in mind when you comment on my battery usage
- I have the power button rattle too. Not too much of an issue, but still a con
- I've also had 3 or 4 cases where i lost all reception and only a reboot brought it back. I also came to my phone and found it shut off once...
Now, i dont have any real problems with the speaker quality. its not bad, but its not HTC One quality either. to me, its perfectly fine, but i know others said they have issues.
I have vibration issues, and they have speaker issues. I have a black one, they have a white one. Coincidence?
What are your thoughts on my comments above?

For someone who is currently waiting for my Nexus 5 to ship (on 3 week backorder), this is discouraging. Right now I still have the ability to cancel the order but I could really use a new phone. Problem posts like these really make me wonder if I should keep waiting for this phone...

Had mine for 2 weeks. No problems here. I'm liking it more every day. Cheers

I know the feeling. I have received the phone 5 days ago and until that I was reading posts like this one. Until I got the phone I had low expectations but that was a good thing because right now I'm very happy with my Nexus 5. Stop reading about problems and start doing things that you love. When the phone will get home you will agree with me...

My experience
I'm sorry your having many problems with your phone.
I actually really like mine. Is the black one to.
I did a full battery calibration and I had 5 hours of hardcore screen time.
Vibration on mine is OK. But it makes the camera(Not the power button) rattle. But i hardly notice.
I like the speaker but I hope they improve the quality with an update.
My only complain would be the camera shutter. It is to damn slow.
Some mobile data connection lost but i think that is my carriers fault.
I'm really Happy with mine. And for the price this is an incredible phone. No stutter whatsoever on demanding games. It doesn't get as hot as my old Galaxy S3. Great media companion in my car and bluetooth 4.0 sips battery.
I totally recomend it.

How exactly have you done a "full battery calibration" ?

When did you get yours? I'm hoping that these new ones that are being made and shipped on the 3rd of December will have the problems fixed...

let me clarify that i am extremely happy with this phone and i am just being extremely critical of minor issues
i strongly recommend it. its a 10/10 phone for me, for sure
i just wanted to point out the issue that bother me. obviously no phone is 100% flawless, but that should not discourage you

Don't let it get to you. Every phone forum has problems. Overall the n5 is a great device and I am 100 percent satisfied coming from a moto x and HTC one.

Posting my opinion is a problem?
Im not saying its a bad phone. i am extremely happy with it, i just wanted to list the bugs and issues that i have had with it

You like the N5 better than the Moto X and the HTC One? Is there anything in specific that you like?

The absolute best thing about the nexus 5 is kitkat, I think it is by far the best version of android.

Ice Cream Sandwich made Android approachable to the masses, and KitKat is the OS grown up. ART, when it goes mainstream and optimised even more, will make it VERY hard for any OS to beat. I also love that Android is being developed to ensure older devices are compatible, possibly reducing device waste through re-purposing.

Yes ICS was the base of what the OS is now no doubt, but I find kit Kat to be really amazing. I mean the nexus 5 is so smooth and fast and the UI is simple and super clean. I much prefer the white theme over the holo blue.

Yep..I'm pleased in the overall direction..it certainly had the potential to get too busy, even ugly enough for a train wreck. One need not look further than the Nicki Minaj iOS7 screen to see things go horribly wrong!

i've had mine for a week now and can't find any of the issues that you mentioned. I don't even know what this power button rattle is. maybe I'm deaf or not as picky about these things. battery life has been pretty consistent for me, It's currently getting better performance and battery then my S4 ever did
