Read the Wiki in my signature.
Follow "Unroot/restore my Nexus" guide. Do what it says for FRG83.
flashing to FRG33 will upgrade to FRG83 and let u know how it goes or if i need help
FRG83
Successfully flashed to FRG33
but i put FRG88 on my sd card
and named it as update.zip
when i went to recover and tried to flash it says
finding update package...
opening update package..
verifying update package....
E:signature verification failed
installation aborted.
any idea?
also im still having wifi problem
when i turn on wifi it says application settings(inprocess com.androd.settings) is not responding then gives me force close
It could be that your update package was not properly signed, or it was corrupted when downloading.
Download it again and see if signature verification passes.
Also if you're sure that the update package is not signed intentionally, you may need a recovery which can ignore signature (as far as I know Amon 1.8 or above can do this)

I installed signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip.
When I go into android system recovery <2e> it says:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
I cannot flash any update.zip file.
It says

I want to install cm-recovery-1.4.img
Is this possible to do without root. (as I think it somehow was undone.)
I have adb and know how to use it but I cannot get it to find cm-recovery-1.4.img on my sd card.
Almost ready to turn tricks to get this fixed!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Not too helpful, but maybe..
I was having a hard time upgrading as well. But what finally worked for me was rolling back to the original RC29 nbh, rooting again, then installing the 1.4 recovery and going forward from there. I seem to always run into problems switching from one rom to another unless I go through the process starting with the Rc 29. Hope this is kinda helpful.
Thanks your right, it's the best way.
for me it worked.
installed the devphone thingy, than 4.1.999 and so on. no problem at all. dunno why it wont work for u

omg you reroot your phone before each rom flash.....damn man props.. i flash a new rom every 2 days
@op
what recovery are you using now? i believe that cyan's recovery is the only one that properly flashes the update from htc..
Hi, first post so go easy on me if this has been asked before!
I'm basically having problems in recovery mode. When I try to do a Nandroid backup there is no option for it. When I select reinstall packages the status says failed to install update.zip or something along the lines of that. Same thing happens when I try to flash a rom. Anybody know whats going on?
Did you install cwm recovery using rom manager?
Yeah I did. I flash the latest version with rom manager. I see the update.zip in the internal sd card folder but im still getting the same message.
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Did you flash the leaked froyo? If so you have 3e recovery, and clockwork recovery will not work. You will have to flash back to stock using odin. You can find it in the captivate development thread. Make sure you are flashing jh6. All of the custom roms have fixed this problem with the recovery not working with clock work
If you are not on the leaked froyo I have nothing
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm almost sure he has to be on Froyo. 3e recovery requires signed .zips which is where he's having the issues with.
Hi Guys,
So here is my problem:
I updated my Captivate from Samsung to Froyo.
I rooted my with Super One Click.
I then downloaded ROM Manager from the Market.
Then used it to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (Current Recovery 2.5.1.2)
My problem is that when I boot into recovery mode, I click on reinstall packages and it gives me the following error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I am not running J16, my baseband says I896UXJL1.
I want to make sure that this works so that I can look into using other ROMs.
Thanks in advance.

i believe this is caused by recovery 3e when you tried to get into recovery using rom manager. it requires some kind of signature of the rom.
you need to copy update.zip to your sdcard root folder first and then shut down your phone and use the key combo to get into the recovery mode instead. you may need to apply the changes twice in the recovery mode.
another way to do that is by using android sdk.
I would first try moving update.zip to sdcard (check for updates first), then try using the 3 button to get to recovery and apply it. If that doesn't work, I'd say your probably on a bad recovery, and you should probably flash to stock (Eclair
) using Odin 1 click, available at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
You can also read there how to use it. I would flash to stock, then go to a proper 2.2 ROM that is widely supported (Perception, Phoenix). Good luck, don't brick your phone.
This makes sense but:
I already have an update.zip in my root folder of my internal SD. Is there something I'm missing here?
Whenever I try to put the device in recovery mode to backup the current ROM using ROM Manager, it fails giving message:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
This has started happening after I installed officially released 2.2 Froyo from ATT. I do not want to flash new ROM without backing the current one.
can anyone help?
it might be the 3e recovery thats causing the problem because the stock one does signature checks before it flash stuff.

this place has a good write up on stock 3e recovery.

Any reason why you want to back up a stock rom?
It is fine now....
I just flashed cm7 on the phone...and every thing is working fantastic now...we can leave the issue behind now...
Thanks a TON for the reply....
Well, I did a complete unroot on my phone via the menu option and after rebooting, my phone bootloops.
To begin with, there was nothing fancy, just OC5 stock, stock recovery and rooted. I tried flashing with OJ3, G870A OC5 Stock rooted rom, and even tried flashing the G870AUCU1ANE4_G870AATT1ANE4 from Odin but they all fail.
When I try and install the roms using the recovery install from external, i get the verification errorm which I think is because they aren't signed by samsung.
Verifing the update package:
E: Footer is wrong
E. Signature Verification Failed
Installation aborted.
When I tried to install the official MD5, I got a "Failed to map file" error.
What can I do from here? I just want a working phone at this point. I don't care about root now.

I got my phone working again so I will post here in case anyone else runs into trouble.
I was able to determine that my phone was on OF3, no OC5 as I originally thought. I was able to determine this by reading through the recovery log in Recovery Mode.
To resolve the bootloop, I followed the the method outlined here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65548400&postcount=64
At first, after applying the update.zip, I thought it was hung, but eventually I just let it sit and then voila! working.
Of course it wasn't really as quick as this, it was hours of trying different things and poring through the forums. At any rate, I hope this helps someone.
