Hi everyone, first post and it's about a G1 I recently purchased.
My phone is using the Cyanogen Mod 6.0.0-DS, which is freshly installed. The weird thing is that about 2/3 of my screen (when in portrait mode) is unresponsive when I place my finger on it.
When I touch in the Left 1/3 of the screen, it recognizes my touch and works. The even weirder part is that when I start my touch in the 1/3 and move into the other area of the screen, the phone recognizes my movement.
So say I'm on the home screen and swipe left to right. The screen recognizes my touch and I can hold down the touch into the right side of the screen and it follows my movements perfectly. It's only when I touch in that 2/3 right part of the screen when it touches not recognize the touch.
Now, my question is this: Is it software related or hardware related? Is there a setting I can use to maybe calibrate the screen. OR do I need to replace the screen (or digitizer? can someone help me understand the difference)?
Thanks in advance for reading. Any help is greatly appreciated. Ask questions if need be

I am having this issue, too. Anyone able to help?
Its common, I had couple of phones with intermediate touch issues on a portion of the screen, a new digitizer took care of that.

I bought my HTC tytn II about a week ago and I am having a problem with the touch screen. Sometimes when I touch for example on the start or on the ok button with the stylus it doesn’t respond from the first time and I must touch again to respond. I have align the screen so that’s not the problem because most of the time it works ok. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks.
Sometimes the corners just need a firmer press where the digitizer layer is held more firmly. So you would need to check whether yours really needs two presses or just a firmer one.

The problem is not just the corners but the whole screen. Sometimes it just doesn’t respond from the first touch.
After further usage of the device I think it’s not the touch screen that has the problem because when it’s not responding it freezes for about 2-4 sec. and then it’s normal again. Is anyone experiencing this strange behavior? What can it be wrong it drives me crazy! Can please someone help?
My ATT Tilt is doing the same thing. Right now im running the stock ATT Rom with the ATT autoload crap disabled after a clean hard reset.
I notice that when my touch screen stops responding so do the soft keys and function buttons. The device appears to hang-up and **** the bed every once in a while. Its often enough to also drive me crazy as well.
I just replaced a screen in a Trinity (Dopod D810). The touchscreen initially wasn't calibrated correctly so I ran the alignment tool in the settings, and after a few attempts, I calibrated it properly and the touchscreen was working perfectly. Now the touchscreen is not working properly. The top half of the screen responds to touch, but no matter where I press in that region, the screen thinks I'm pressing the top-right corner. When I run the alignment again, it responds to all the touchpoints but it never successfully calibrates and it keeps bringing me back to the alignment screen.
The current settings in the registry entry for touch calibration are as follows:
484,558 244,286 263,815 750,820 707,295
I've found a few other threads here (the most helpful being http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355010) and I've tried the settings from that thread. The screen seems more responsive, but still not correct because the bottom half hardly responds and the top half seems to respond when it feels like it.
Can someone please post their D810 touchscreen settings so I can try it? I've tried the settings from my Touch Cruise, but the screen is still doing weird things.
This is a customer's phone so I need to have this fixed ASAP.
I'm thinking that it may be a faulty digitizer, but that won't explain why it worked perfectly when I first calibrated it.
UPDATE: NOT FIXED yet, but now the backlight is dead. I just turned it off, and then turned it on again, but I can only see the screen content if I shine a torch onto the screen. The LCD hasn't leaked. The backlight just died and the connectors in the phone are fine. Perhaps this was a dodgy screen.
Any ideas?!
since the device has a recessed screen, take the cover off to get at it.
take a soft cloth or something and clean off all the garbage on the digitizer and back of the plastic. make sure everything around the lcd is free of dirt.
usually, if there is something pushing down on the digitizer while you calibrate it, it will totally bork the alignment over the course of 10 minutes to an hour.
my kaiser is currently having this issue, though i put it though alot more hell then i should have... so i suspect its suffering from other issues.
My G1 has problem in its touch screen when i press upper part of the screen then it presses downward it is the hardware problem or the software problem .
Previously I have switched ROM from HTC to Cyanogen 4.0.4. Is there any way to slove this problem.
Can you be more descriptive. I'm leaning toward hardware issue. Once you say what exactly is going on, it can be pinpointed. Always format, wipe and install.
The actual problem of G1 is that when i point the upper part of touchscreen then it won,t point the pointer there instead of were i point it goes to different location. What is the problem it software problem or hardware problem.
wipe your screen with your finger. The problem is the capacitative screen, if there are oily patches in the lower part of your screen, they usually have just enough charge for the screen to detect a touch, in roms that don't have a multitouch kernel (or places where you can't use multitouch) pressing on the top part while there's a charge on the bottom makes the screen register both touches. When you wipe with your finger, you even out the oil across the whole screen and it requires a higher charge to actually do something, but not more than that of your finger. It sucks that keeping the screen clean is so hard/detrimental (though there are capacitative-touchcreen friendly gloves if you're into that)
Thanks....................
I put in a new screen because mine had cracked. Everything went smoothly; the phone powers up, screen looks great, but touch does not register.
Also, the phone OS seems to run a bit slowly.
I used the buttons to go to the touch screen alignment page, but nothing there, either. Any suggestions before I take it apart again?
I'm sorry if this is a redundant thread; I searched!
I first noticed this on a running game where you have to hold down either the left or right side of the screen to move in that direction. It would usually register the first press, but not that I had held my finger down so I wasnt moving properly. I thought this was due to the game it's self rather than my phone.
I've just downloaded Naugh where you have to rotate the screen by touching either side of the phone, and again the same issue. It's really unresponsive - It will recognise the tap but not that i've held it, it will stop working. Occasionaly this will also happen when scrolling a page.
I did a quick google search and found that the Z1 had this issue, but havent found a fix.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or if not, any suggestions on figuring out whats wrong?
Edit: I recorded a video of exactly what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW2gCWpThWc
I don't know if my problem with my screen is related to yours, but i'm experiencing some problems as well.
On the picture i attached in this post is a picture taken of my screen with a black background.
In the middle of the screen there is a slight discolouring, and in this particular spot the touch screen is very unresponsive, i'm especially noticing this when playing candy crush, making it almost impossible to swap the two candies in this particular spot
Both of these sound a bit like my problem was at first, but mine quickly got worse (in hours) and then I found the hairline crack in the screen.
Bottom corner and not in a part of the screen that displays anything - just the 'glass' front at the bottom - but a third of the screen near the middle doesn't respond to touch.
It gradually got worse over a couple of hours until it stopped responding altogether.
