Wifi calling for T-Mobile - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi will this work on the captivate?
http://m.pocketnow.com/android/how-to-get-wifi-calling-on-your-t-mobile-nexus-one
Assuming you start at step 7 skipping the cyanogen mod flashing.
And yes I am using a Captivate on T-mobile. My data plan does not allow for the usage of T-mobile branded Android phones.

Really?

What's wrong with those instructions? It seems as though it just adds certain functions to the kernel for the app too call on.
Sorry I am just trying to figure out how to get this working because I am in a no reception areas for about 5-7 hours a day. This would really help allow me to get service and possibly save on battery life so that the phone isn't searching for a signal constantly.

There are some people who use the Captivate on T-Mobile. A few people have asked if it's possible to still add this feature in the Cognition thread and I have not seen an answer yet.
To answer the OP I'm not sure if it would be as simple as that since you're also flashing a kernel.

Has anyone tried?

if you read the instructions, you clearly need a modified kernel.
we don't have a kernel source to modify. on top of that, for the people who *can't* use it, it would just be a source of potential trouble. if you're on t-mobile and want to use t-mobile features, I suggest buying a t-mobile phone.
until we get sources, we likely won't see this on captivate kernel (as for a vibrant kernel, it's possible, but that has it's own source of issues)

Hey, come to the cognition IRC... I have some stuff you can test, I can open the app and such, but I am not on tmobile, so no way to test it beyond that.

Yeah when I get out of class ill gladly test out some stuff for wifi calling. Ill also have to figure out how to use Irc again. Any helpful guides? Wont be out of class until another 3 hours.

As an update, me and designgears tried several different combinations to try this out. So far I flashed a full Vibrant rom onto my Captivate and got the Wifi Calling to work. The keys were a switched because of the Vibrant Kernel but it was definitely working. Now if only we can port this feature over to the Captivate roms.

are you serious about this? what other quality benifits are there from flashing the full vibrant rom? i'm using simplemobile which is a sister network to tmobile. If you can post a link to it with instructions on how to install it I would be glad to experiment with you!

I literally just flashed one of the custom Vibrant roms in the Vibrant section using Clockwork and it worked just fine. Just some of the buttons were misassigned due to it running a Vibrant kernel.

Did anybody ever got wi-fi calling to work on unlocked captivate on T-mobile network?
Flashing vibrant ROM sounds interesting, but I would prefer to keep captivate rom on captivate.

I wonder if any roms have implemented this yet. I've been looking but found nothing. It would be a great feature. And to all you smart asses that keep saying "get a vibrant," I'll gladly swap your vibrant for my captivate. No? Well this is the phone I have and that's what I'm modding. So keep it to yourself.

Wow, I'm on a 'pay as you go' plan on T-Moblie with my captivate. I would love this if it worked!

(But seriously he did a kickass job)
Its just depressing to see Vibrant listed for future support for cyanogen roms, while the captivate is not. Hopefully the port is easy.

Last I heard they where making a universal cm6 for galaxy S. Perhaps working on the vibrant but end goal would make it universal. Oh well...perhaps i was wrong it wouldn't be first and def wouldn't be the last.
Same hardware so I don't see the problem with getting CM6 to work for us. Hell the Vibrant one might work straight across.
Side question, has anyone tried flashing a captivate with a vibrant kernel?
pretty good chance that CM6 should work as is, I'm running Vibrant6 at the moment with no issues other than the TMO stuff but that is nothing to worry about

I'm actually using the Vibrant source release to build my Captivate kernels. They're about the same but many things are missing from the Captivate sources. The compiled kernels are quite different though - the two version are built with different configurations and have different files in initramfs.

A couple of reasons
1) there isn't any 4 G coverage where I live and refuse to pay an extra 10 dollars for a service I'll never use. I'm in agreement with the folks behind explainthefee.com on that subject.
2) EVDO sucks here as well. 90% of the time I am on 1x instead of full EVDO.
Thanks for the answers so far by the way. Has Samsung finally gone along with the rest of the Open Handset Alliance and standardized on their file system layout or is it still as screwy as the one on the Moment?

They don't share towers, BUT you can install a VZW PRL file which force a sprint phone to use VZW towers. That helped me a little.
The main reason I moved to AT&T was Sprint's decision to not include Froyo on any of their older Android phones. The Hero, which now runs CM6 and the Moment, which has the same CPU as the moto droid, will get no further enhancements. I hated that. I was ready to jump to T-Mob and the Vibrant but the Amazon deal for a penny on the Captivate got me here.
AT&T is great here. I'm not in a major metro area, and that seems to be where AT&T fares the worst.

[Q] Which ROM/modem? AT&T, GPS, HSUPA

I haven't flashed a new ROM in awhile and really don't want to have to go through every ROM/modem combination to find one that works for my needs. I know plenty of folks here go through almost every ROM that is available so I'm hoping to pick your brains.
1) I'm NOT asking "what is the best ROM". I <3 -all- of the ROM authors and don't wish to start that kind of mess.
2) I'm willing to try a couple of combinations to see.
3) My Cappy is brand new (I just exchanged my old one under warranty since I was one of those in the original batch that got the lovely random shutdown issue even with 2.1-update1) ... not sure if that is going to matter or not but I've read a lot of posts that seem to make it clear that different Cappy batches behave better with different ROMs.
So ... what I'm primarily looking for:
* I'm on AT&T so I need 850
* I would REALLY like to get improved GPS performance ... I don't want to buy a standalone GPS (wife has one, I'll use it when I have to) ... right now even with the GPS tweaks like Skyhook I'm just not getting acceptable lock times and it loves to break lock.
* HSUPA ... I'd like to enable HSUPA. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with a new 3G tower and small population, which means I know there is more bandwidth available so I might as well use it. Especially since on occasion I need to tether.
* I don't want to lose noise cancellation
* I would like a ROM with good battery performance
Otherwise I'm not concerned with new features ... besides the issues above I do fine with the 2.1 ROM (not saying I don't want 2.2, just saying I don't care whether the custom ROM includes custom launchers, themes, etc). I would -like- working Bluetooth + HSUPA but my version of "working Bluetooth" doesn't care about voice dialing.
PS. I've read a number of threads on ROMs and modems ... but my brain hit information overload once I started trying to match up both. I probably could have settled on a single ROM -or- modem, but trying to get them to mesh well just didn't compute.
Everyone has different experiences with different roms. I know it's a cliche but it's true. I've had pretty much no gps in a rom that boasts about gps. Best to try each rom and see if you like any.

Personally I love my combo of darky's 9.1 with suckerpunch oc/uv kernel and the tjl3 modem. I really haven't used the gps much and so I can't say about that (make sure to use faster fix to get the right region). The battery life is all day for me and I use stereo bluetooth headphones all day. I really like the look too. I don't know if it has noise canceling though. Hopefully this is helpful.

The only way to have noise cancellation is to stay with 2.1. From what I understand, att is the only one to have included the noise cancellation chip and since we do not yet have an official Att 2.2 source we can not take advantage of the chip.
Not sure on this one, but doesn't i9000 based roms have the bt static issue? And is the i9000 roms the only ones that let you have hsupa? Sorry a lot of information is on this site and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Started with the included modem (??), flashed jk4 with CWM (didn't help), moved to Telus JL3. I like JL3 better right now.
Just know that you have to pay attention to what ROM you're using. If you're running a I9000 rom, you have to use a I9000 modem.

So rooting and flashing roms on sprint tab...

I have several smart phones and I have been able to root and flash roms now so far it seems like working on the tab is not as easy.... Is this true? im afraid of bricking it.... But is it worth rooting it?
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
from what I can gather on these boards thus far is that we went with the wrong carrier (sprint) for the tab, since tmobile seems to have more development going for it, AND at this point I am not seeing much advantage to rooting anyways. Let me know if you digested the boards differently as this is the only thing that is stopping me from rooting as well
well its because sprint is cdma and tmobile is gms which is found everywhere in the world... i am still within 30 days so i could return it, and I am thinking about switching to tmo anyway maybe going with the streak 7 as it has the tegra 2 processor

Those How To's are AWESOME! Thanks! NO ONE has broken it down for we (the sad and lonely) CDMA SGT owners...
The question remains, however: Is it worth it?
So far, my answer is hell to thuh naw... With so many reports of brickage, and so little dev work being done, keeping the CDMA SGT stock seems to be the only way to go. I received my Tab for Christmas from a gorgeous santa (who also recently gave me another gift, my daughter (haven't rooted that device yet, either)) against my suggestions to wait (to get me a Tab, not to have my daughter). A few short months later, here we are:
XOOM dominates, SGT 2 and 10.1 (along with TONS of other Tabs) are announced and with Samsung's reputation for damn near NEVER updating their device's OS' (KIES SUCKS!), I'm thinking the SGT will never see the light of Honeycomb, which really is the only worthwhile upgrade for the device. As other tabs gain popularity, the dev work for the SGT decreases, with more and more messages like "This is the last update to this ROM, as I just got a XOOM".
So here I sit, with an oversized phone that can't make calls, watching Tron Legacy over and over while flashin' anything and everything on my EVO, longing for a XOOM...
That being said, anyone HATE the XOOM, and wanna' trade for an SGT? The SGT RULES!

so general question, when doing the custom recovery on the sprint tab, if samsung/sprint releases the upgrade to 2.4 / 3.0 (god willing), will that upgrade have any impact on the custom recovery, or are the mutually exclusive?
So far, this has been a bust for me since I've been completely incapable of syncing with Kies. I've searched and tried every possible solution I could find to no avail.

On the Sprint SGT you need to use New PC Studio instead of Kies. Follow the instruction exactly, but replace with NPC. Worked like a charm!
Pardon me for coming late to the party. Have been trying to root my Sprint (CDMA) tab for months. All fail for one reason or another (Z4Root doesn't work, Kies doesn't work on my Win 7 PC, SuperOneClick comes up as a virus and requires the use of Kies, PCStudio can be downloaded from a site that Firefox says is untrustworthy). I've spent endless hours reading msg boards and how-tos. i'm a resonably savy computer user. Is there a set of intnructions to root a Sprint-branded Tab anywhere???

Anyone mess with the the mobile access point feature yet?

So this may be a legally touchy subject, but I'm sure it's possible to unlock the personal hotspot feature on the captivate without shelling out $20 a month to "the providers". A jailbroken iPhone can do it so I'm pretty sure my android is capable of the same thing.
Let me know of it's out there and I just haven't researched deep enough.

All of the custom roms have mobile AP for free.
Try searching next time. PLENTY of threads on this. Install titanium backup and figure it out from there. As it being not legal I'm not saying exactly how its done, but I will say its easy.

The last post hinted at the solution when you are on stock Froyo. If you flash to a custom rom, they all have the mobile hotspot feature, functional and free. I am volunteering in a place with no internet access, and I have used the phone for a couple months to give us spot access to download files and check email and do light surfing. I upped my plan to 2 GB while I was doing that, just to be safe, and have had no issues either with the phone or with AT&T.

I don't understand what you're talking about. However, I do know that the official Android MobileAP app is found in all custom ROMs on this forum and it's BLAZING fast if you get 3g/H signal where you live.
You should really try a custom ROM. A really refined one is Cezar's v4 Continuum. You'll have to do some reading, but it's not so bad. Use MyBackup Root to save/restore your apps, it's free and works just as well as Titanium Backup.
Hdspa is only noticeable faster for uploads in my experience. With tethering my speed is never great its usable but not at a level I would want to do much work through.you might see some improvement with a custom rom but nothing mind blowing

I guess we've had varied experience. I can load several webpages and be syncing my dropbox and I do not notice the slightest bit of lag.
Make sure you're using a very fast modem like XXJVK. Shoman has a great test of the speed of various modems here.

Help choosing a modem.

I'm currently switching up ics roms and kernels to see which works best for me but I do not understand modems so I need some help here. I saw jk4 on the map close to me. I live in jacksonville fl and commute all around the city and west of jacksonville daily I was wondering which ones to try out.

I'm currently switching up ics roms and kernels to see which works best for me but I do not understand modems so I need some help here. I saw jk4 on the map close to me. I live in jacksonville fl and commute all around the city and west of jacksonville daily I was wondering which ones to try out.
Thanks

Just start downloading them and trying them, giving them about 2 days before you decide if you like it. Several factors to consider are call quality, signal strength, battery life, and GPS reception. Since your using ICS roms, you must use the modems packaged as CM7/MIUI. You try using something else and it won't flash.
Look >>HERE<< for all the modems you would ever want to try. (FWIW, I like BVJWW2)
Like mrhaley said, there are a variety of things that affect it. JK4 worked great for me when I was in Florida, so I would start there. JW2 is nice also, but it seems like people can't hear me as well with it.

JK4 FTW! I've stayed with it since Eclair and it still works great now I'm on THS ICS. Great starting point to try out.

I flashed jk4 just now. Im over my data limit so I will not be testing internet yet, if it works better I will see better battery life because service is better and faster internet? Is that right?

I'm not sure about better battery life but call quality, data speed and connection stability will definitely improve if the modem is right for you

Better battery life will happen if it gives you better signal strength in the areas you spend the most time.

Thanks for that info
hope can get some advice
Hello guys, a few days back I flashed teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Captivate (BUILD 17) on my wife's phone, but she has told me that her apps are not syncing outside of a wifi connection.
I'm thinking it might be something related to the modem.
So I'm looking for any advice on which moden should I load, considering we live in Venezuela? Any tips?
Regards.

Someone listed the "UGKC1" modem in use in Panama. You might consider UGJL2 or UGKG3 also, near by. Search "soggy cashew captivate modem" and check the map. Update your own listing if you find something that works.

That is a bit out of date, you probably should flash a newer build

Thanks for the info guys, had to flash elite v. 10.1 rom, this was the only rom that would enable data service.
Tried:
AOKP-captivatemtd-build-35
F1-galaxynexus-galaxys-20120502-beta2
Nostalgia-b31-v5.4
Team ICSSGS
CM9-20120510-nightly
CNA-1.5.5
Dark Knight v5.5
Elite v.10.1 was the only rom that connected data service.
The good things is that my wife likes it as is right now, which makes it easy on me. Hehehe.
Regards.
