[Q] loose hinge? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

.
..

My Droid is about 1 year old. There's a tiny gap where 2 halves of the phone can be pressed together on one side, albeit very minutely. It is quite taut, so it doesn't wobble around at all. In general, it should feel very solid.

Loose Stylus on XDA2i - lost 2 of my 3 in 2 days!!>>&g

Hiya!
I'm miffed!
I lost 2 of my 3 original styli in the space of 2 days - dam things!
I noticed first when I saw it lying near my Xda one time on my side table. Thought nothing of it. Then a couple days later I go to reach - and it's gone! I thought dam, must've not put it back in properly and got a spare out of my Xda goody bag.
1 Day later, I got to use it in the bank to add up some cheques - bloody gone again!
I'm using my last one now and have noticed it's not sitting in the compartment tightly at all, turn it upside down give it a little shake, woop, out it falls!
I think I'm going to use the 'sellotape' fix, anyone else know of anything else? - I don't fancy sticking blu tak down there!
annoying!
Dennis! West London UK!!
First of all, I don't have the device.
Anyway, I noticed that most of the PDA stylus has a little groove near the tip (writing end). That's what is used for holding the stylus in. Since you are using new ones and keep loosing, it is not the stylus fault, probably the (latch?) thing that is holding onto that groove is 'weak'. So, I think if you were to have a tape circling the stylus just after the groove, it may help? Or try a few drops of superglue near the groove (MAKE SURE THEY ARE DRY FIRST BEFORE INSERTING IT BACK ON) to create a permanant 'hill' which the 'weak' latch can hold onto.
Ahhyes I suffered the same fate! But not in a bank.
All I did was get my second stylus and very gently bend(tweak) it ever so slightly. This also makes it slide into the slot a little harder than normal but not lost my second one yet!
Just be very gentle on bending. I dont know how easy they are to snap cause I never took it that far.
I just tweaked mine a bit as it was loose. You don't need much of a bend for it to work, you won't even notice it when your using the stylus.

When you say "tweak" - do you mean the metal part or the dark grey part? When I bend the latter it feels like it's going to snap!
I've had two 2is now, and I only have one stylus left.
At the moment it's in my phone, but I'll be putting it back into the white box the phone came in from O2 after I've written this, because I hardly ever use it anyway. I've experienced the same fate three times now, but I know where one of my styluses is - on my University's other campus, about 4 miles away from where I am... That's what happens when you go to someone's flat after a heavy night of drinking for MORE heavy drinking, and (of course) sharing round of the phone for everyone to drunkenly play Jawbreaker on.
I'm amazed I left with my phone, nevermind my stylus, I woke up at 6am nestled in a little cranny inbetween a street lamp and a wall Man that was a heavy night of drinking.
The other styli have just slipped out when I've been moving the phone from pocket to hand to pocket, even when I've bent them to stop them from slipping out they just fall out.
I was getting fed up with the middle of the screen becoming pushed in (and you get that rainbow effect as the inner and outer plastic layers of the screen stick together) so I brought a screen protector from Discount GPS Direct, and now I just mash the screen with my fingers. Also means I have a stylus left if I decide to sell my 2i on at a later date

DIY HD2 Media/Video Dock, Stand

Well after seeing what user StickyAsGlue did for his Galaxy S in the portal the other day, [See Here] I was sort of inspired to build something simple from scraps of metal I had laying around from an old shelf and a couple tiny bolts. Heres how I did it, in list form so you can do it too.
1) I cut a 6 inch long piece of 1"x1" steel and a second piece 4" long using a hand saw. This piece makes up the main body of the dock.
2) I cut a gap the width of my phone (about 4.925" with the HTC Silicon case on) and .850" depth using a mill and a Dremel tool. I could have used JUST the Dremel tool but since I have a Bridgeport Mill at my disposal, well...
3) I then cut a second angled part from the 4" piece. This piece makes up the rear support/stabilizer.
4) Butting up the angled piece and the main body I spot drilled two holes. They dont have to be perfect.
TIP: Drill them slightly oversized for "wiggle" room.
5) Using two small bolts/nuts, I aligned the two holes on the stabilizer with the two holes on the body and inserted/tightened the bolts.
GOOD NEWS! Youre finished!
From here I simply painted it white with a can of outdoor paint. I think for the price and the simplicity, its a neat little holder. I got the fit tight so that even after a few test drops, the phone never fell out of the holding slot. Leave some feedback if you wish!
Hopefully the pic with my wallpaper on is OK. Everything is pretty well covered up. If not mods please let me know and I will remove it

[Q] How to avoid Xperias that crack

Hi,
I personally love my xperia X1. Its a lovely piece of sleek hardware, can be easily overclocked and has a good solid metal chassy. I bought a black one from rogers and I love it. I personally havent had any cracking issues or anything, in fact my phone has been dropped on pavement 2 times and in deep snow once, and emerged without even a scratch.
Because I hate frequent hardware changes Id like to keep my xperia for a full five years and would like to buy a second phone as they are really becoming cheap now. I have had my eye on the silver phones for a while, but know they are more prone to cracking. Particularly phones made in weeks 44,45 and 46 right?
Are there any silver phones that have had this issue corrected yet and been relreaed?
When buying a phone and shopping is there a way to tell which phones will have the cracking issue? Serial or batch numbers on the box mabye.
If I am concerned should I just stick to the black ones?
Finally other than ebay does anyone know where I can get a cheap new or refurbished X1?
Any help is appreciated.
hahahhahahahahahahaha
I have a black xperia and it cracks like crazy xD and i didn't drop it once xD
Hi, if the cracking is whats got you concerned, why don't you try getting just the housing? there's guides on how to replace it, I've done it myself. Replaced both the ribbon cable and the housing.
I still have my silver X. bought it at bethefirstx1 (1st day). my housing has been replaced once because of crack. I never bumped my phone nor dropped it. but I have cracks all over it:
1. the dreaded volume button crack (2nd time after replacement)
2. the camera button crack
3. the middle area crack (rumored to have been cracked due for using a car stand, I don't have car stand but I got the crack on the same location)
4. the camera part crack up to the top of the phone
The only thing left for me to have is the crack on the stylus area and the crack on the earphone plug.
So after these years, what I can tell about it is it still cracks due to user mishandling (please correct me if I'm work I already rant a lot of times on the crack thread)
but I found out that whenever you change your battery/take off your memory card, you either use your fingernail to open the cover on one of the four areas where you can slip it. That actually inclines the cover and tilts it on the side where your fingernail opened it. Thus it results to the cracking of the opposite trapeziodal area (either the volume or camera part)
I had my keyboard replaced and the camera housing had the crack after it was replaced. (I'm thinking it was from the technician's part of re-assembling it)
Lastly, the metallic middle portion of the phone chipped off:
I think from the leather case that came with my X1, the middle part of it is exposed and I wear 'em clipped on my belt. I guess that how got it to chip off, whenever you reach your phone on your belt side you actually hold it on the expose area pressing your thumb to it to lever your fingers on the magnetized leather case to open up. For more than 3 years of doing it everyday, I guess that the reason for my crack on the metallic area.
If you live in the UK you could pay a visit to CEX also known as Entertainment Exchange, they also have a website... I bought my x1 from them about three months ago, and everything they sell comes with a 12 month guarantee be it second user or brand new.
just buy the black one, the silver ones seem to crack a lot easier. Or just get another phone that's better, they should be cheap now.
I got mine for $120 so can't complain.

"Tough" Silver X1
I have a Silver X1 for about 3 years now, fell down 15 feet, hit a stone and has a tiny little dent on the screen, never had cracking problems until 2 weeks ago, fell out my hand, 3 floors down, ricocheted off a handrail and landed on concrete pavement, one crack upper right hand corner, and well usual wear and tear, the bright chrome siding wore off due to car keys in same pocket.
Don't know whether my phone actually is tough, or plain dumb luck.

Samsung swears the Galaxy Note 4 won’t bend in your back pocket

Samsung performed many drops, both manual and machine-assisted, showing in its video that the handset’s display will not crack when dropped from various heights on tough surfaces and that the phone will continue to work. However, in some of those tests it’s clearly visible that the plastic rear case may come off.

Every phone I have had with a replaceable battery has rear plates that pop off if dropped. In the old days it was every drop, now its only occasionally. This is not a surprise. In fact it is necessary. the back falls off because the unit is flexing, and the popping of back cover is actually releasing some of the stress. In at least a minor way, your device receives less damage this way.
As for the bending in the pocket... all larger phones will have some flex in them. The video I saw of the iphone and the note 4 bending shows that under extreme stress the phone will bend. The amount of force to make it bend is in the neighborhood of 150+ lbs of force.... however, remember that this is concentrated force, so if you weigh more than 150 pounds it doesn't mean that you will bend your phone. Unless your pocket is made out of some materiel that will press against your device with the concentrated force of 2 fingers pushing up, while the rest of the fingers are pushing down... The iPhone 6 was less durable, but to be fair it still took about 70 lbs of force to bend it.
The biggest difference is that the iPhone nearly creased at the volume buttons. It was bent, and bent bad, and it would be difficult, if not impossible to bend it back. The Note 4 was a gentle curve, and it was able to be counter bent back to being flat.
The truly funny part of all of this is that all of Apples "benefits and features" are slowly becoming its flaws. For example the all metal body is why it bends so bad and so easily... and the screen size that was perfect is now too small and they had to make them bigger to compete. (just wait until they start to brag about the plastic construction in the iPhone 7 (or iPhone 6p)
I have been saying the same thing about the iPhone. Someday the smaller and lighter will give way to some sort of weakness. Knowing them they might use a magnesium frame like Samsung and HTC use, but then they will act like it's something revolutionary that they came up with.

Build quality ?

Hi there !
Could anyone tell me how is the in hand feel of the XZ1C compared to other phones ?
Are the buttons mushy and cheap or tight and accurate ?
Any other impressions
I had 3 Compact models from Sony yet and each was pretty solid. No creaks, button works perfectly.
I've had mine for 12 months now, and can honestly say it is rock solid, no button creaks or mushy feel to them..
Fantastic little device
Same here, quite content with this model. Buttons are working perfect since 1 year (fingerprint too) and the only bad point is the material (plastic) of the back, makes my phone slips easily in the hand.
More than ten times has fallen from my hands and still looks like the first day i bought. (a big bonus for the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen)
