Debian on CyanogenMod?

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if I can run Debian on my CM. There ist this guide on this BBS, that explains how to run it on JF Mod. So will it only run on JF?
May the force be with you.

I was wondering the same thing. A buddy of mine is going to give me his G1 to play around with since he's gotten a new phone. Id love to run Deb on it, but am unsure. Im not sure exactly what firmware customization JF has done on his. If we could find that out, we may be able to figure out if it'll work for us by comparing it with what has been done with the CM firmware. (His site isnt all that specific as to the details and is obviously not as current as the CM development. JF writeup
Another question would be if we could just add it during the install. Just as how with CM you have to install the android parts that CM cant release... maybe we could add in the JF Rom before CM (but after the android rom) and hope that the parts it needs gets installed but doesn't break CM.
Ive never messed with an Android before, so I'm just guessing here.

So maybe its worth the shot to just try it and see what happens (I wont get my G1 till next week, so I cant give you any feedback before that)

Yes, you can get Debian installed on G1.. I have tutorials up on how to install, resize the image and then install a GUI for it... check it out: http://www.myhangoutonline.com/tutorials/g1/install-linux-on-your-g1

It would be absolutely awesome if that would work! I am giving it a try in a few days. Has anyone experience points with the linked method? Not that you are going to brick your beloved G1.

However almost all links seem to be outdated. They are a few month old what I think is suspicious since debian should attract much more attention. Any theories why there are only a few that are interested?
I just can recommend deb. Its a whole world of software. Probably the best on earth.

yes... the method i have in my tutorial works... I've used debian before on my G1... it will not brick it... it all pretty much runs from your SDCard. If you don't like it, just delete the folder and bam, it's gone...
Follow the tutorial... there are 3... 1 to install linux: http://www.myhangoutonline.com/tutorials/g1/install-linux-on-your-g1
then 2 more... after that one, you'll need to resize your debian image, then you'll need to follow the 3rd tutorial to install a GUI. all 3 are at the site... enjoy it! it's a lil slow, but it works. i would recommend it without the GUI, but you can try both and see which you like better.

What is chroot?
A chroot image is like a Virtual Machine where you are running an O.S within an O.S.The point of this is that you have a whole Linux System running on a phone where you can ofcourse access all the utilities available in Linux.and as it runs inside of android you dont need to flash anything and can use both the chrooted O.S and Android together.
Things required:-
1)Terminal
2)Root
3)Sdcard with atleast 2GB of free space
4)A Brain

Hi! Have you tried this on stock kernel? I believe stock kernel doesn't have loop devices enabled and MIUI is a rebase of CM? Not sure though that's why I'm asking.

The Miui i used was on Stock Kernel.The Kernel Does Support Loop devices.Miui is a Rebase of CM but the loop functionality is related to Kernel.So,Yes it Works on Stock Kernel on Locked/Unlocked Bootloaders Both as we are not flashing anything.
Anyway Give Ubuntu a go.

Thanks! Just clarifying things out I haven't meddled with stock kernel that much that's why I am asking. Well the kernel sources sony provided has loop devices disabled by default glad that it's enabled on the official precompiled one.
Anyways! Try packing backtrack that should be alot useful than debian w/ lxde or a classic ubuntu image.
I got backtrack to run on Pro sometime ago when I was still using gingerbread.

Debian and Ubuntu both have lxde pre-installed.

Hi! seeing that you're a fanatic of these perhaps it would be useful if I give you these.

Those are packed and reduced sizes of debian & fedora arm images made to fit for chrooting on mobile devices. I made those for my previous device and is very stable already with 256mb RAM
the debian image is a squeeze version. Plus included is the fix for pulse audio. I'm not sure if it would work out of the box for android but with just a little bit knowledge with basic linux stuffs you could get it running perfectly

THANKS for the link...Meego wont chroot..tried it on the optimus a few months ago and failed..problem with zephyr..will give it a go later.fedora I had as well..but the thing is ...Does anyone except me even use these here????

Say do you think it would be possible to include a custom kernel on a chrooted image? It would be cool if we have backtrack here with monitor mode enabled. I think the wlan drivers/hardware of Xperia devices have the capability.
Or also try posting this thread to some other Xperia Sub forums. Arc/Pro users seem to be not very open to these kind of works. They just care on custom ROMs
In short they aren't geeky enough They aren't even that interested in dual booting.

In theory yes its possible.but changes will have to be made to the arm kernel to chroot.when u type uname in terminal the output inside the chroot is different than the android kernel.but I think native booting will be better than chrooting..not being interested is just odd....its so much fun having linux on the go

Actually I know I am going to say something Off-Topic
1) People on XDA are now the people who have got a smartphone just because they can afford one and wanna make their phone look "kewl" than the others with the same device
2) People do dumb things like cross flashing kernels.. They dont even read carefully what the OP says..
3) Running linux on a phone would be the best thing.. specially on an xperia pro where you get a harware keyboard..

Question:in the "/downloads/" directory there's a build named "Latest-Build-EXPERIMENTAL.zip ".is it a flashable zip?

The only difference between Ubuntu or any other distribution are the repositories and the name. This was made of Ubuntu Lucid and the zip doesn't work yet.

I don't n to be needly or pushy or anything, but can the OP, or anyone running the ROM, make a video showing the Native Linux app capability? I know it would have to be compiled for ARM and It's been hard finding ARM apps for Ubuntu, for example, but you can show me something cool then I'll love you all forever.

Does this have any package management included? How is this better than using chroot? In my experience for the things I want to do chroot is not bad other than the fact that I want an external keyboard (to program in emacs), but if this is faster somehow that could be nice. But I'd rather have the package repositories of Ubuntu over speed personally.

Waiting anxiously for a vid or a better explanation of it's use...Keep it man!!!

It is better than chroot because it does not require a lot of the core Linux capabilities to run in two instances as in a chroot, so it is approximately twice as fast, and I am working on a package management app, but I cannot just use the Ubuntu repositories because I have to rebuild the applications for the specific hardware, but I am working on a package management app, but I am just learning Java.

Hi everyone! Have you ever wanted to compile your own nightlies, but are too intimidated or "not a dev"?
For various reasons, I've decided to write a guide about how you too can enter the wonderful world of development.
Before we begin, I'm going to say one thing. I'll probably repeat it a bunch of times too, to be sure everyone reads it at least once while skimming through this. PLEASE GOOGLE YOUR QUESTION FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES BEFORE ASKING IT HERE. The main reason I wrote this guide is to try to refocus the point of the "Development" forums on XDA. There are many users out there that seem to think this is a place to make demands for answers without trying to contribute or learn anything themselves. Developing isn't an easy thing. You should know a little bit of Linux going into this, if not, prepare yourself for some reading. This isn't the place for you to ask how to install Ubuntu, or why you need 64 bit. Just have a little faith and trust me.
Major thanks goes out to Hashcode.. Seriously, you have no idea what an inspiration he's been. For all intents and purposes, this guide will show you how to set up your system and compile ROMs based on his work, perhaps even help work on fixes. I suppose I should thank google, cyanogenmod, team aokp, thingonaspring (minimoto rocks!) a few others. You know who you are.
On with the show.
Here's a list of things you will need:
1) A decent computer (at least dual core, 2+ gig of RAM, 50 gig free HD space) capable of running Linux
2) A copy of Builduntu
3) Spare time and the desire to learn.
Double check that your main system is 64 bit. 32 bit OS will not work!
Once you get Builduntu up and running (there are instructions @ the above link), read on.
You need to make a decision. What flavor of Android do you want to compile? In other words, AOKP, Cyanogenmod, AOSP, LiquidSmooth, SimpleAOSP etc etc etc.
For the purposes of teaching everyone, I'm going to base this guide on AOKP.
You've made it this far, you're basically almost there. *cue motivational montage music*
When Builduntu says, "initialize the build repo", that means to sync your source code with a git repository. Run these commands in a terminal:

cd ~/android
The following command will do the actual initialization:

repo init -u https://github.com/AOKP/platform_manifest.git -b jb-mr1
Ok, after this next part you're going to want to take a break. It's time to actually download to your computer (sync) the source code. As of writing this guide, it is over 10 gigabytes of information, depending on which "flavor" of Android. In the terminal:

repo sync
Don't worry, just execute and walk away. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, this could take a long time. Anywhere from one hour to "maybe-you-should-do-this-before-you-go-to-sleep". Up next is actually doing the compiling.
When that finishes, you have the source code. Let's get to business. This next bit will probably take a while also, but again, it's a set-it-and-forget-it situation.

lunch yourdevicenamehere
make otapackage
That should do it! Watch for errors, but everything should work at this point. Again, how long this takes is completely dependent on how fast your computer is. If it completes without a hitch, you'll have a flashable zip file located in ~/android/out/target/product/yourdevicename/
Congrats, you just compiled from source! Now, if you really want to get adventurous, you can start delving into the code itself and make some changes. But this post isn't the place to get into all that. Good luck, and please say thanks if this guide was helpful!

Although I didn't tried this howto yet, I feel obligated to thank you for this. In the past I though about trying to do something directly tweaking the code and, who knows, contribute with something nice to our "D3 society". But could never figure how to start it. Hmmmmmm. That is a frustrating problem. I've had it happen before..
Just tried a compile myself, and CM10 doesn't work. Silly me for thinking that everything would go smoothly. It could be some changes reflected recently on CM's end. The joys of development!
However, I just tried an AOKP 4.2 build, and it does boot. So I'm going to make some quick changes to the guide to reflect building for AOKP while I examine the code and see what's up.
There's nothing more frustrating when a build completes successfully and then won't flash. I'll keep everyone posted.

I found the bug with not isolating kernel in additional roms after posting multirom here. Unfortunately I havent solved it yet. I decided to not delele this project because the rest of this works. This is useful who want to have similar rom in on tab. For example to test apps. Sorry for inconvience.

nice to see you here. Actually I bought this high end class tablet because of its specifations and over standarts. Still is the most powerful tablet in market.. But somehow it always lacked development and support of developers. Recently maybe the price is dropped so it started make owners smile little bit.
I was almost giong to change it, but still there is no powerful alternate..
I would like to be a tester of multiboot. because I would love to see ubuntu desktop in this tablet.

it's not so difficult to run ubuntu desktop here, but it wiil be very big problem with drivers. I thought about ubuntu, but now I'm not going to have a deal with it. I advice you to look linux deploy

I was still hoping to get the minor issues resolved, notably the issue with Rom's installer are not shown in the installed ROM's section.

Any possibility of porting this to Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014)? The hardware is almost exactly identical. Really like your work, keep it up!

I dont have any plans to port to other devices. It doesnt fully working and I dont have any progress with it...

Do you mean the first (pre multirom install ) flashed rom kernal is the only kernal that boots regardless of the chosen rom, is multirom a separate bootloder that is chainloaded by the original bootloader? Does multirom have a config file describing the various kernals with different filenames if so can it be manually edited? Does multirom mount emulated system partition images or are their actual multiple prexisting system partions in the mbr that multirom can choose from ? What would quilify as similar roms, stock and omni are they similar enouph ?

I dont recommend to use this multirom because it has the bug with sharing kernel. So you need to use similar roms as primary and as additional. I dont have an idea how to solve it at this moment.
