So my newest captivate did not have the 3 button method to go into download mode.
I flashed to cog 5.5 v2.2 BETA5.5 a month ago and decided no to touch it until a fix came out.
I read on designgears page that flashing back to jf6 will re-enable the 3 button method, so i decided to go for it.
I got into download mode using adb, and then tried flashing with odin3 one click downloader (the one DG provides on his page)
while flashing, it gets stuck on the 3rd step that says "file analysis". I tried a few more times but always the same result, so i pulled the battery and tried to boot the phone back up.
Now i get the "phone-!-Computer" on my screen and i cant get into download mode at all. What are my options? I have heard of this homemade jig that you can make, but I'm not all that confident in my soldering abilities.
try this
1-run odin
2-take out the battery and everything else (SIM & micro sd card)
3-reinsert battery
4-HOLD DOWN both up and down volume buttons
5-plug the usb cable (make sure the other end is already plugged into ur computer)
u might get into download mode now !
if so, reflash to whatever rom u want

This only works for phones that can access download mode using button combos. My phone can't.
Any other suggestions?

When did u buy ur phone? What is its manufacture date? I got mine under warranty exchange, and this has manufacture date as august end, and this has 3-button download mode.

got this about a month or so ago. My first one had it, cracked the screen and exchanged it and now this one doesn't.
DG recommends flashing to jf6 to enable it, but in the process i bricked my phone. Ironic?
i ended up making a jig and got it to go into download mode that way.
Its pretty easy and i recommend it to anyone who cant get into DL mode.
Also i think there was something wrong with the first version of I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 that i downloaded, because once i downloaded it again, flashing worked fine.

Not true. My phone doesn't have the three button access, but I can access it by holding the buttons and plugging in the USB cable.
Try it. You may be pleasantly surprised.
EDIT: or don't try it since you've already fixed it. lol

Please read above post.
Some phones CANNOT access download mode by using ANY button combo. The method you described is how my old phone would go into download mode, this one does not go into download mode.
"This combo works for me" might be the second most annoying post behind "GPS works for ME!!!"
Both are actual issues, just because yours works doesn't mean everyone else's will too.
Jf6 breaks download mode. You got it backwards.
Best advice I can give you is to keep trying...sometimes it does work

This.
I had the same issue and thought I had bricked it... If you plug the USB cable into the computer but not into the phone, then pull the battery out of the back, wait 30 seconds, put the battery back in and put the cover on, hold down both buttons at the same time and while holding them, stick the micro part of the SD cable into the phone, it boots into download mode.
tried both these, and a couple other combos i've found and nothing works.

Some people find it easier to explain their own problems than to read through others' problems to determine their fix. If you don't have the desire to help me out, then don't post in this thread. Your thoughts on how this forum could be improved aren't contributing to the fix of my phone so why bother?
I have the same problem. JIG doesn't help at all. BTW, I made two cable and tested on a working captivate. the JIG cable does work. It's just not working on the complete-bricked phone.
I tried any method I could find on the forum and nothing works. I don't even know how a successful flash (reported by ODIN) and the phone reboot itself and then complete dead after that.
so if I filed a claim for insurance no one be the wiser about me having unauthorized software on my phone?

If your phone shows absolutely no sign of life whatsoever, then something may have killed the hardware. You didn't say what you did to cause the hard bricking. Were you flashing a ROM?

Having trouble with a ROM. It is putting me into boot loop. I have ODIN flasher installed and I've seen 2 ways to make ODIN QF see my phone.
1)turn phone on go into shut down screen and select download. Can't do this, can't get beyond boot loop.
2)volume down>ok>power, This is a problem, there is no OK button on a Captivate!
So what are my choices? I need to flash back to a stock version.
Thanks, Tom
Just turn your phone off completely. Have Odin up on your computer and the USB cable plugged in just to the computer. Hold the volume buttons on the left side of the phone. . WHILE holding the volume buttons plug in the usb cable into the phone. It will get into Download mode and all you have to do is click start in Odin from there. Hope this Helps
I have a T mobile vibrant and don't know if this will work for you but it did for me so give it a shot.
Start up Odin on your computer. Plug in a usb cord into a port on the pc. Don't plug it into the phone yet.
Turn the phone off
At the same time press the volume up and down buttons together.
While holding them both plug in the micro usb plug into the phone. Wait a few seconds and it should start up download mode.
Goodluck.

Guys come on, I just need help. I read it all, every thing matters to me!
AT&T. I think 1007 (there is nothing specific that says build #)
I have both ODIN Flasher & ODIN3 one-click
A note on ODIN, I have used it on this phone, It's how I originally flashed the phone (ODIN3 OC), however when I try the download method my computer is indicating a connection but neither OC nor Flasher see the phone.
I've also watched and read about ODIN3 OC and in all cases you need the phone on to work! Did I miss something?
So you are going into down load mode with odin open already and it is not recognizing your device?
With your build use one click for ease if use

I need help ASAP. been pulling my hair out for hours now! my power button on my captivate is broke and I have Cognition 4.5 installed, and i Need to get it into download mode so I can put stock froyo on and get it taken care of today! I am without a properly working phone till I get this fixed! I downloaded SDK tools, but can't figure out how to get an adb server to connect to the device so I can go into download mode. Someone help me anyway you can!
There are two things you can try:
First this program worked great for me as I had never used adb before and needed it to get stuff off my phone when I broke the screen. Give it a try

Only Download Mode
Sorry for hijacking this thread as dint wanted to start a new thread.
Question:- When trying to turn on the phone the phone goes to Download with just the power button i haven't seen the phone or checked it personally (it belongs to a friend).
As per him the phone was running CM 7 and how this happened he don't know he said when he tries to turn it on with the help of power button it straight goes to DL mode, Also no recovery for him.
I did asked him to put the phone in DL and check does the PC recognizes it.
My Question is why did this happened and How ?
Well never seen that before...but its prolly recovery mode...but if it is dl mode...flash to stock to verify that it is not hardware defect

I tried flashing the ics source port but forgot to flash cm7 first... It flashed fine and I followed the procedure to flash. The phone would turn on but always go straight to recovery. I figured this was because I didn't go to cm7 first, so I went to flash it but I kept getting errors. I went to flash stock, it started going so I walked away. When I came back my phone was just a white screen and odin was stuck at sbl.bin. So now I can't boot up the phone, there's no bootloaders, just a black screen whenever I try to do anything. The thing is, I can get into download mode just fine through button combos which leads me to think it's not bricked. However, odin/heimdall will not recognize it... Anyone know what to do?

Try the things listed in the "connectivity issues" post attached to my signature. If none of those works to get Odin/Heimdall to see your phone, post back.
followed it. Didn't recognize for like a minute then it showed up. I started it but it's stuck at do not turn off the target
tried again and same thing
What is it showing on the computer side (i.e. what is Odin/Heimdall saying right now)?
I'm using odin right now. But heimdal would always just say not recognized or whatever it says. Odin, when I get it to finally recognize after waiting a minute using your method, it just gets to DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET! and stalls there.
I got it to work. No clue what made it finally work

Good to hear. I know the feeling - it's like the computer/phone are just messing with you.
Damn. A similar thing happened. I had to flash to stock since button combos weren't working, and all the sudden while odin was running my screen just went black. I waited to see if anything would happen, but everything just stalled there. I've been trying to use my homemade 100k ohm resistor jig, and button combos to get into download mode but nothing seems to be doing anything. Am I bricked?
If u have no signs of life at all (no battery charging screen when u plug into a wall charger or no kind of something happening if u try to power it on) then u r hard bricked.
But there is Jtag and the Unbrickable Mod.

I had something similar happen to me,when I was running A6 or A7. I even noticed that I was losing folders that were visible on CWM. I was going to try to re-flash the ROM, but those folders were gone. What fixed it for me, was I did a Factory Reset, and al of the lost folders came back, and I was able to Odin back to stock. Look in sig link, "Download Mode". One of those methods has to work. If not a single one of those methods worked, you would have a paperweight that used to be a cell phone. Make/buy a jig. If the phone boots up and is usable, even if it is stuck on a stock rom, use it that way until a jig can be ordered and delivered. You can try to make one, but are difficult to make work.
