2.1 Camera Reboot - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just searched the forums and I've found mostly questions with no real answers.
My brother just bought a Hero, running stock 2.1. Whenever he launches the camera, the phone reboots. I'm going to be rooting it soon: is there a fix I can flash or is this a hardware issue?
Sorry if this is a commonly answered question, but I did search quite a bit.

No, it isn't, but he's rooting soon. At least that is what his post said.

Yeah, it's not rooted as of right now. The reboots are happening on the stock 2.1 Sense ROM. Anytime any application launches the camera, the phone reboots. I guess I'll be rooting it and flashing CM pretty soon (don't know - maybe AOSP will fix it?). Any other ideas on a fix would be appreciated, though.
Edit: Just to provide some info, I've tried clearing data in the Camera app. I don't have much to work with it not being rooted, but I gave it a shot.

I agree. Sounds like a software issue. Does the camera reboot when you open it yourself or only when opened by an app?
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Froyo-on-Hero action here!

Either way. I wouldn't imagine it would be a hardware issue (because this stuff rarely is), but the phone reboots when I open the Camera app, or when another application like Goggles opens the camera.

Yeah, root and run a custom rom and I bet it goes away

Alright, rooted and flashed Clockwork. Doing a nandroid now. I'll flash a Sense ROM tomorrow, and CM if that doesn't work. I'm totally new to the Hero dev community; can't wait to see what you guys have to offer.

Just a quick update. I flashed CM6.1. That fixed everything, including the camera and the lag that Sense forces upon everything it touches.
Thanks for the help, guys.

Tranquility ROM

there is a new ROM over on mydroidworld its by P3Droid and it has most of the stock blur removed..its pretty sweet if anyone wants to try it out..all credits go to the creater of the rom
Looks identical to Birdman. Meh
He pulled the same apk's. Identical. I appreciate the effort but we need something new.
Link:

This is a good rom for those that haven't already manually removed all of the bloatware themselves. Otherwise, nothing special. Atleast yet.
I figured some people might like the stock messaging app alarm clock and gallery..i hated the motoblur messaging..this plus the froyo

I never bothered upgrading to birdman since I had already removed most of the junk myself so it just didn't seem like a good enough reason to wipe. This rom on other hand does not require a wipe and it is nice to have the stock message app as well.
I updated to tranquility, because it was deodexed and I had not yet done that. Now I was able to use the black status bar with white text. No major differences from stock than that and removal of a lot of blur.

A lot of blur can be removed, you just have to have applications to take their places. And it has to be able to work without blur supporting it. That's what these ROMs are so far. They're either floating over blur or taking over certain components of it.
Most of us however are waiting for a vanilla build heh.

Not anything major. Compcache has been made available, but if you have Decad3nce's kernel installed then you'll have that already. Also some of the customized notifications have been taken out from Cyanogenmod settings I believe due to incompatibility. Overall, RC1 is still more stable.

What you need to make that work is to install the Sprint updater app as well along with it. See this post to get it going
Actually, there are all kinds of little things I like better in the nightlies, like the extra reboot options, touch to focus like on htc camera, being able to connect to ad-hoc networks, setting the colors of my email accounts - too much to list.

trouble updating
I'm running RC1 with gapps and black mod, with the circle battery theme from black theme as well. I have trouble betting past boot when I update, i.e. I am running Aug 15, when there have been a couple of updates, I think it's on Sept. 4th right now. I have updated all the themes to the corresponding RC1 release, and won't boot. I will add that I'm not wiping as it says you shouldn't have to. Bootloop! I can even go back to the previous version (Aug 15) with out wiping reapply older themes to go along with that release, and it loads right up! I get to the point where I don't even like to f$#% with it anymore because I get tired of going through the work of flashing like four zips for notta!

Ok that's the problem... obviously on the new nightlies, the kernel is default and uncapped, hence your random reboots. Use set cpu or the battery tweak to lower your max frequency from 768 to about 710, that way you avoid the random reboots.

Any new sense roms

I passed down my hero to my son about 8 months ago after upgrading to the ego. He's been running fresh Rom that I had installed when he inherited it, don't get me wrong, I always thought it was an awesome and extremely stable, fast Rom. I've searched and searched for a more recent stable sense Rom but cannot find any. Does anyone know of anything more recent with most things functional, he's only 12, so it doesn't have to be perfect, just stable enough for every day use. Thank you.

agreed 100%. FYI in the interest of not misleading the OP by accident, you should edit that to say stock 2.1 (i.e. "eclair"). I know it's built from 2.31.xxxx, just sayin. Also, the "best" sense ROM - although I never really run them - was NFX hero, just my 2 pennies.
I was going to try nfx when the hero was mine but never got around to trying it out. I think I'll give it a test run for my son and see how he likes it. Quick ?, I was going to flash aospcmod, do you have any thoughts on it, is it stable enough for a daily driver for a 12 yr old. Thank you for your suggestions and not flaming me, I'm not new to flashing, just haven't been on the hero forum in awhile since getting the ego.

Well, aospCMod (gingerbread) has been my daily for months. So yeah it's stable, and FAST, but it does have some minor glitches, really minor. Like some people have GPS reboots, but I would guess a 12yr old isn't in need of a nav app. Also randomly the screen will dim and become unresponsive (very rarely) and a reboot fixes it. There might be couple other things, but they're minor enough that I don't remember them. If you're looking for a no-bugs daily, aospmod (froyo) is solid, and again FAST, as is CM6.1 final. Good luck.
Thanks duce, I think I'll give aospmod a run. I really appreciate your help.

Just so you know, and I'm sure you do, those ROMs are not sense based, they AOSP and CM based. They are killer ROMs though.
Yeah, I've ran aosp before. I don't much care for sense myself, was just looking for my son but I think he will enjoy this Rom. I run vaelpak on my evo, its sense but has all aosp mods available for download through his settings app. I also never run the sense launcher either, I've always preferred adw ex myself and that's what I run as my daily. The only thing he may need that from the looks of it is Sprint vvm, I think I can figure out how to set his voicemail up thru Google voice though.

Overlays are a bit odd.. hit the home key to make them show up better. (crash messages with the "ok" button for example).
Don't give up. Never surrender!

Ignoring the obvious continuous crashes from background processes you'll have to let me know how you think the new OS "feels". For me it was snappy. It'll be easier to guage on the next version.

Yeah man I was just about to reply and say despite the crashes this super smooth... blows GB away IMO. Keep it up!
Awesome, but, still far from my XT860.
This is honestly one of the best ports I've seen so far for a Motorola phone. Yeah, of course it needs some work to be used like a regular rom, but not near as much work as the other phones. You obviously have hw acceleration down, thats the biggest problem IMO right there! Good work.
I had to flash back before my battery dropped too low but it worked here. Jelly seemed to have much better luck than I did - my screens were all funky. I'll retry it soon once I'm charged and have more time to fiddle.

Nice, from the look of the video its fast but not that stable yet. Keep up the good work, I would definitely pay/donate if we get a stable ICS ROM out someday.
Ya the os was snappy without the graphic issues or crash popups

Isn't it obvious that the ROM will be very fast if 80% of the services aren't running/working?

Because things crashing and constantly trying to restart wouldn't slow it down at all amirite.
