Hi there, quick newbie question for the Telus Milestone running stock 2.1.
Is it possible to root, just for the purpose of overclocking, and keep the stock rom?
I know rooting gives you superuser access, but do you have to change the rom for it?
Also, is there an easy step by step thats not 200+ pages buried in a thread? Ive looked, and am having issues.
I just want an overclocked Milestone
Nope. You'll want 3 things though.
1) universal root app (lets you root and unroot with no problems)
2) Milestone overclock (Should google this apk, not in the market)
3) setCpu (this u can pay for in the market or find it on XDA -donate tho to support-)
These are all reversable if you need. I did it to mine, but just couldn't find the right profiles for my use so I undid all but root privileges. I like the other appspot that opens for me.
Best of luck.

Thanks a lot! That worked perfectly
By the way...the milestone overclock is on the market though....overclocking to 1.2Ghz is not stable, but 1Ghz is

Yep I found it in the market thanks. And actually I've found my Milestone runs more stable at 1.2 then 1.0ghz, been running it about a week now.

I'm using the 80vsel. That's strange it crashed
Mine Runs fine @ 1.2 GHz vsel 80.
I've never tried the custom vsel rating though.
I can't run on 1.2Ghz 80vsel though...its not stable on my phone....how your battery life?I really can't feel my battery drain faster LOL

My battery life only needs to last for my commute of 90 minutes during the week. I plug it in once I get to work. Are you running another rom? I'm still running the stock one, maybe that has something to do with it. Ill find out this weekend when I throw on one of the Froyo roms.
On days when I need my Milestone to last all day I put the cpu back to 550mhz, and turn off my apns and gps. I still can call and text and that's fine when my phone isn't in my hands
No,I'm running the stock 2.1update1 : ) LOL I didn't overclock for the pass 2 dayd now...I'm going to test the battery life on 550 cpu..and then I'm going to tested with overclock..what rom are you using?

has anyone been able to overclock the CPU for the galaxy S past 1GHz??? Im sold when i found out that touchwiz can be replaced w/ ADW Launcher so i plan on gettin this phone next month.
wouldnt recomment it.. when we tried even just setting the cpu mode to on demand instead of conservative.. which doesnt even up the cpu.. search for the thread about it on here.
Don´t think is such a problem if long as you don´t heat it up.
Its easy to overclock this phone, I'm running 1.2 ghz right now with a custom rom, its a great phone and if you want to game its unbeatable in performance compared to other smart phones.

Why resurrect a question that was asked nearly 10 months ago and due to advances is not really even relevant anymore?

I have run my phone using the CM7 and Miui roms at 1.3 ghz using the bilboa or zacharius kernels and xans voltage control app (which also allows you to undervolt) with absolutely no problems. Admittedly the phone will get hot if try and play dungeon defenders whilst you are charging so don't!

Now that the kernel source is available, won't we be able to overclock our mobiles?
Guess i got a little bit envious with all the overclocking that has being going on with other phones.

A bit of using search never really hurt anyone before...
So is it possible yet.

Been possible for last 3months. Just find a kernel with oc support and get setcpu. Frankly its not worth it as setcpu is a piece of **** app that make your system unstable. As other poster said. Do a damn search

But for froyo? Maybe is asking for it.
maybe someone with the tallents could have a look into this OC method they use for droid x and milestone using a kernel module, this would enable us to overclock any froyo kernel.
http://androidforums.com/droid-2-al...d-2-overclock-kernel-module-instructions.html
It would be nice to have it in the kernel. 100 to 1200 that the system controlling like it already do. No setcpu crap.

also setcpu is not to blame for the problems, as it runs just well on galaxy i7500 for overclocking. i´m not sure what the problem wit it is on SGS, but i´m pretty its not setcpu´s fault

The problem is that SGS doesn't like different CPU governors! It will only work if you don't touch the governor settings! At least that is what I have found to work in the Eclair builds!

Seems ignorance is bliss for some of our fellow xda folks. SetCPU is not even needed for those oc kernels unless you want to change scaling from default schema. It really don't contribute to the unstablity, just that the kernels seemed inefficient.

I agree. Don't install SetCPU and the kernel is reasonably stable, but crashes miserably when running cup intensive apps. We have to work harder developing a kernel which works well for our hardware.

kernel was very much stable. It is just that hummingbird is bad for overclocking. Not all phones can be overclocked, sadly.

I can understand what you are suggesting, however why was it still unstable when I tried to disable 1.2GHz or 1.13GHz frequency keeping the original scaling and running at 1GHz or less??
Is that 0.2 bump really noticeable?

I think 20% is noticable difference. Especially when using that crap of a browser we have.

dont know which version you used.
1.13 was quite old. All recent versions were 1.2. Anyway, nevermind =)
Yeah, do want a OC'able kernel - the 1.2GHz kernels for Éclair were always stable enough for me if I didn't try to UV it.
Id be open to using a 1.2Ghz OC if its 100% stable and no wake-up bugs and ofcourse should not affect the life of my CPU that much and should not drain my battery more than 10% faster
Hi! Quick Q. I installed setirons kernal 1.5.6 and overclocked it to 1.4. Put it on the charger last.night and when I.woke.up it was off and showed thw battery sign and 100%. I used ti see thus problem almost all the time but ignired it cause jt never applied to me. Thanks for.helping!

Try using speedmod's kernels on the link below. They have some kind of charge protection into them that says charge full when battery is like 98% or so full. This avoids getting full charge helping fix charge death.
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880
Edit: Don't worry abt losing that 2%. These kernels are pretty battery efficient and make up for that 2% charge.
I think Designgears posted a work-around solution using SetCPU as well. You might want to search for that thread in the Development forum and see if that works.

Don't use an OC/UV kernel (see diablo009's speedmod link) or try the latest glitterballs kernel which seems to have fixed the charging shutdown problem.
I seriously need an.oc kernal or my phone lags terribly

Don't fret on OC/UV. I have SetiroNs 1.5.6 kernel. Have a quadrant score of 1350+. I used speedmod's kernels, n got a quadrant score of 1350+. None of these use voodoo. Nor do I use UV/OC.
All I did was to flash these, and convert the file systems to EXT4 (by default they are RFS). Do this and u'll find ur phone pretty fast.
Honestly, I think it was a freak thing, happened one night and that was it. Now its working like a.charm! thanks for your input!

What ROM are you running? I run Darky's 8.1 with Speedmod kernel, underclocked to 800MHz (conservative scaling down to 100MHz, no oc/uv), and my Captivate runs smooth as butter, no lag in launcher or apps, over 1200 in Quadrant (over 1300 if I remove the 800MHz cap).
Hey guys. Ive done some research but didnt seem to get a clear answer for the questions I had.
Im running apex 7.1 with the talon kernal capable to overclock t 1.6.
Can overclocking ruin my phone? Also, if I delete setcpu will my cpu revert back to 1 ghz or will I need to set the max to 1 ghz then remove lol.
Just want some clear answers I guess, you know.

I am using voltage control app by XAN from market. Dont try and hit 1600 in one step. Try and go step by step. Like OC to 1200 and see if ur setup is stable, then try 1400 and so on
To come back to 1 Ghz use voltage control again
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036020
So far im at 1.3 doing the stability tests until it goes through 30 cycles of the core.
If it would be unstable it would just reboot the phone correct?

Yeah what Sudacris said!
I was overclocked on DesignGears Cognition ROM when he supported it and I managed to get 1.3Ghz stable, but couldn't get anything past that... but from what I hear it is very device specific, some will, some won't. It all depends.
Hey everyone. I was wondering what your setcpu profiles were on your milestone
Like how you configured it and etc
Is there recommended settings?

I discarded SetCPU because it took hours to get awake after some time of standby/low clock frequency.
Best is really to get a ROM and flash your device.
