Ultra Keyboard is not on the Market when viewed from the Nook Color (only the "dictionaries" are).
So I went on my phone and used Root Explorer to grab the apk from data\app.
I pasted it into system\app on my Nook Color and changed the permissions (rw-r--r--).
After a reboot, I can select Ultra Keyboard from the Nook Color Tools app, but going into any text field, the keyboard never appears.
What am I doing wrong?
Has anyone else gotten Ultra Keyboard to work?

I also would like to know the answer to this.
Does that keyboard app support the resolution of the NC?

Another thing to try is to copy system/app/LatinIME.apk to your sd card, then change Ultra keyboard's name to system/app/LatinIME.apk. Reboot.
Might not make a difference, but worth a try. If you end up with no keyboard, just move your backup back where it was.
I don't have any keyboards. What happened?

No idea. How to check?
I'm just looking for a keyboard that has arrow buttons (and works on the NC), so if anyone knows of one, please let me know!

I'm starting to sound like I work for SlideIT (trust me, I was a loyal Swype user until last week), but SlideIT has arrow keys buried back on the last page of special characters.

Oh wow! Thanks!
Thumb Keyboard works on the Nook COlor and has some of the best tablet features I have found -- including cursor arrow keys that work! It has several alternate keyboard layouts which all seem to work on my Nook Color -- except one standard QWERTY which failed to display the bottom row of keys that included the key to press that switches back to the layouts that work ... now I am stuck trying to figure out how to get out of the current layout ...
I am unable to get thumb keyboard too work! What did you do to get it to work? I tried everything...

Unless he knows of some development we missed (this has been thoroughly researched - see link), then no, still no Swype on NookColor.

Didn't realize that swype wasn't working on the nc. I'm here researching so I can root my wife's nc. I was simply going off the post that appeared to say that the poster had to switch from swype because of the lack of directional pad

Just an FYI, shapewriter seems to work. It is small, but functional.

I was actually just able to get it to work by copying the .apk into system/app with full permissions and then installing it from there. Didn't have to mess with LatinIME.apk and can switch back and forth easily.
Though I am having a problem when changing layouts and the row of keys with the spacebar/menu buttons disappearing.

I'd love to know if you figure out the spacebar and menu buttons disappearing for the thumbs keyboard.
Edit: So I figured out that you can use Titanium Backup to wipe data and that resets the keyboard back to the large phone setting that allows spacebar and menu access. I cannot get any of the tablet keyboard options to work. None have the menu or spacebar option. I wanted the Thumbs keyboard because of the arrows. Unfortunately I can only find the arrows in the large phone keyboard which has a really weird layout. If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it!

I actually emailed the developer and they said they were working on sending out updates in the coming weeks and are aware of the problems with the tablet layout. He suggested deleting the XML file in the folder /data/data/com.beansoft.keyboardplus/shared-preferences and reboot the nook, to reset the keyboard. But using titanium backup might be quicker.

Sadly it does not have arrows.
Has anyone figured out how to get Swiftkey keyboard to work in tablet mode on the Gtab? Apparently it's the same app, but it auto-detects a Galaxy Tab and adjusts its layout for a tablet.
Is there a way to fool the app into using this layout on the Gtab. I, for one, really miss the text prediction in Swiftkey, but I can handle the squashed keys.
Edit: nevermind. The tablet layout is apparently not available yet.

If you are bored and want to try something new, give thumb keyboard a try. I have used it in both tablet and standard mode and both work well. Allows for full height adjustibility in both landscape and portrait modes and also has the predictive text.
I am actually using thumb keyboard, but I find that I'm so used to using SwiftKey on my N1, that I make more mistakes and expect the word prediction to fix. Or type slower and more carefully.
I love Thumb Keyboard. If I could make a Frankenstein monster of Thumb keyboard's layout and skin and SwiftKey's prediction I would.

Something else you can try depending on the size of your hands which works well for me: take thumb keyboard out of tablet mode and put it back into standard mode, then make the keys larger. I make very few mistakes this way and it much easier to hit the keys. Then again if you have smaller hands it may not work as well for you, but its something to try.
Hi i just got a Galaxy Tab when i put keyboard horizontally and type why does it completely cover the screen? I would like to see the most recent text but it covers everything and also in browser and stuff it just takes the whole screen up is there a way to change this?
Settings - Locale & Text
Go to your keyboard, there might be an option to disable fullscreen landscape mode but not all keyboards do.

theres an app called keyboard manager that does just that.
Is there an option or a setting which will enable "Word Suggestions" when using the Milestone's physical keyboard and CM7?
I've used Swiftkey in the past, which is a great keyboard that does have word suggestions for the physical kbd. But I've gone back to the stock keyboard for now, and I miss the suggestions.

Swiftkey is amazing! I'm using it right know! It's amazing!
Hi all,
I'd like to get an smaller onscreen keyboard that doesn't take up half of the screen. This would allow me see more at a glance. Currently I hide/unhide the keyboard when I want to see more, but that is annoying because half the time when you unhide the keyboard, it covers up the part of the document you want to edit.
I've found SlideIT keyboard which lets you resize the keyboard, which is pretty cool.
It has a Swype like function as well as normal tap. The swype like functions works pretty well, but it doesn't seem as good as Swype in terms of picking the correct word. I think this is partially an accuracy thing (you have to be more accurate with SlideIt) and also there are quite a few common words that haven't been in the dictionary (but I've been adding them as they occur, so this should reduce over time).
Does anyone know of any other keyboards that aren't as big as the stock keyboard?
I'm in the 15 day trial of Slide IT, so if I don't find another, I'll probably end up getting this one.
thanks,
Rich
Thumb keyboard lets you alter the height and width, but no swype function. I've been using TK for almost 2 years. Developer is very responsive.

Thanks guys very helpful. Neither of those keyboards say that you can resize them in their market descriptions, which is why I didn't try them before.
I liked Swiftkey the best out of the 2. The word prediction is pretty amazing in Swiftkey. I could be incredibly sloppy with my typing and it still picked the right word most of the time.
It does require thumb typing to be fast though, and I realised that most of the time I hold my phone cradled in one hand and then use the other to swype or tap out words with 1 or 2 fingers or the SPen.
I like the word prediction of Swiftkey, but the input method and smaller keyboard size of SlideIT... I'll keep trying both of those for a bit longer before deciding...
Cheers,
Rich
Smart Keyboard is also an option. You can customize it in various ways. Among others you have the possibility to adapt the size of the keys and therefore the entire keyboard.

Thanks. I like that you can get Smart Keyboard to take up less screen space than Swiftkey.
But I think I like the word prediction on Swift Key better.
And I still think swiping is quicker for me, although the SlideIT keyboard is not as good as the Samsung Swype for word prediction and being lenient on how accurate your swipe path needs to be.
