Extended battery for original Droid? - Motorola Droid and Milestone Accessories

Can the part MOTDRD2BATXW fit with the original Droid or should I stick to the Seidio slim battery instead?

I read that it does on a post. got to a verizon store and try it out. i have not personally tried either.
I saw a review that most of the aftermarket batteries fall short of claimed out put. buyer beware.

I am using a Droid 2 Extender battery in my Droid 1, and have been for months. I haven't noticed any issues yet, just keep in mind that you have to use the Droid 2 back cover (and it will be a tight fit).

Just have to use the extender battery door, because the extended battery (1850 mAh) is about 1.5 millimiters thicker.

what is its price?

milestone ?
HI Does anyone know if this works on milestone ?
It should right ?

Any update with the Tun.ko?

So you use the extended on the droid 1. the battery fits but you have to use the droid 2 back? Will it still work in the dock and car dock? or does it stick out? also were did you buy it? thanks!

There are complete replacement sets on ebay including the needed battery door... and a bit more power: About 2300 mAH: http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-Droid-...624689435?pt=US_Batteries&hash=item2a0e12091b

a user on our german android forums (android-hilfe.de) had conducted a series of tests on these "extended" batteries and has (to sum it up) proven them to be pretty much pointless. the mAh value printed on is a lie to say the least, and the added bulk and need for a new battery cover drives the price up to a point where you´d simply be better off (cheaper and in terms of battery life) with an additional "normal" battery.
would explain why there seems to be virtually NOBODY that is using these extended hulks of a battery ^^

I think an original BP7X motorola battery can really boost the duration...

I use extended batteries constantly on my CDMA HTC Hero200 and on my Moto Droid 1. They last a great deal longer and yes they do make the phones look like a brick but it makes up for it in the time the phone can stay on longer. I'm in the military and my Hero stays on for 2-3 days without needing a recharge if I'm not constantly messing with it. If I'm actively doing things with the phone it draws more power. Also if you leave the GPS and Wi-Fi on it draws more power. Everything makes a difference. Close all apps you don't need running and shut down anything not needed for longer battery life. Overall, for 10 dollars on EBay you can't beat it,I'll make that user on the German Android Forums look like a chump when it comes to batteries.

I bought the extended battery a few weeks after getting my D3. Typically, I get more than 24 hours to a charge. That's with quite a bit of texting, phone calls and surfing. The battery comes with a new back cover for the phone.

You can find one here particularly for milestone 3300mAh [HLI-A855XL]
http://www.mugen-power-batteries.co...-milestone-with-battery-in-black-3300mah.html

With the BP7X battery being around 1 to 1.5mm thicker can you just remove the sticky sponge pad on the back of the Droid/Milestone battery panel? I'm hoping that works as the pad itself is around 1mm thick and is there to fill a recess and push against the battery.

extended batteries

Speaking as someone who uses their phone pretty darn constantly, I'm in need of a battery that lasts a bit longer than the stock.
currently, Seidio is selling an extended battery (I would link, but as a noob I'm not able to..) 1750 mAh - no new door required, but only a gain of 450 mAh..
Verizon has stated there's a 2150 mAh extended battery coming, but that will almost certainly require a new back plate.
Anyone spotted any other compatible batteries yet?
I ordered the Seidio one and while it fits behind the stock cover it also adds a bit of weight, which is great considering how light this bad boy is.
Seidio is also going to release a 3500 mAh battery in the near future! According to their website, it adds 3-5 mm of width. But for the extra battery I think it will be worth it. The only problem is I am debating on purchasing this because I had one for my tilt and well it flat out sucked after a month of use.
what do you mean it flat out sucked after a month, the thickness or the capacity of the battery?
The battery itself would barley last a day if I was lucky. Seidio just said it needed to charge like 8 times before it was full. It didn't kick in. Is this rare?

Did you let it fully drain till the phone died, and keep turning the phone on until it wont turn on anymore. Then charge it fully, unplug when it is fully charged, let it get back down to 90-95%, then fully charge again, let die & repeat. Do that a few times and your battery life should be better. This is what I do whenever I get a new phone...
We use LiION Batteries, No special charging required
OK, to start, there is NO NEED to do any special charging conditions with Li Ion batteries, it does not matter how they are charged. A standard battery will have between 400 and 1200 charge cycles before it loses 50% of its capacity (1200 if you charge at 50%, 400 if you charge at 0-10%, like when the phone quits on you). Ni Cadmium on the other hand does require special charging situations but we don't use them in cell phones because of the mass. You can do take the advice of the previous post, but if you do that I would suggest sacrificing a virgin symbian phone or doing a handstand while plugging in your phone to charge. That might increase the battery life too.
Secondly, I spoke with Verizon, and their 2100 mA extended battery will be available soon and it is supposed to fit with the stock backing, probably the best way to go if you ask me, only $60 too. I am checking their site almost daily waiting for this to become available since like many, I need more battery life, I find that I can barely make it through the day without being conservative with the use, and that's on a work day when I'm not on it that much, on the weekends I have to charge it in the afternoon.
If you want to save on battery, turn down the screen brightness, chose a background with as few colors as possible, the more black the less battery you will use since its an AMOLED, blacks mean there is no power being used on the screen. Turn off your GEO locations services both on the phone settings and in programs that run a lot. This will easily save you 25-30% battery life.

I was at a Verizon store yesterday asking about it and they showed me their documentation. Their extended battery will come with a new back cover that is slightly raised to fit the larger battery.
I'm waiting for this too because it looks like it will be the most aesthetically pleasing option.
Too bad the guy had NO idea when the accessories were going to become available. Ugh.

Verizon doesn't trust their employees very much - to prevent leaks, they don't tell people about equipment/accessory release dates til within about two weeks of the actual release. The Incredible launch announcement had one of the longest announcement to release times I've seen the the last two years.

I dont know, but my seideco 1750 def gets me 3 more hours a day on my Incredible. I have switched back and forth from stock and the extended...the extended wins EVERYTIME...so Im not sure about that report.
@ suzook
I read that my OEM TP2 rated as one of the best.
TP2 OEM standard issue Rated @ 1500mAh Tested @ 1414mAh
Most Likely our stock incredible battery has a lower mAh then it actually states it is.
@ Xxq TZ pxX
Yes it will work because its in my phone now working like a champ ;O)
I also told someone else here like myself who swapped from the tp2 ====> incredible and he seen it first hand as-well.
TP2 batteries work fine
Hey all,
The TP2 battery works fine. Same size and 200mAh more than stock... in fact I've seen them sold on Fommy.com as the thin extended battery for $44.95. Don't be fooled, and just go buy the TP2 batteries. They're cheaper if you don't need the therapy session of a rebranding.
Enjoy!
P.S. Got a workaround for Skype too...
I'm sure a number of HTC CDMA phones have interchangeable batteries.
I swapped out the 1500mAh battery from my Sprint Hero and put it into my Incredible. It's easily out lasting the stock incredible battery.
I ordered the 1500 HTC battery as well. Between those to staying charged I am not worried about it.
Also anyone know of a battery charger for these types of batteries?
For those of you that want a red 1500mah battery I found this but im not sure if its oem or not it just says its an htc extra capacity battery hxxp://shop.htcpedia.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=825

Battery Power, and Extender

I want a new battery with more power to my phone, i am also not apposed to getting a Extended Battery.. Any suggestions, or info i should no about?
Check out the Hero CDMA sub forum, there are several options for batteries there.
You can pick up two extra batteries and an external charger for about $12 on Ebay. I went this route and don't regret it. I keep a fully charged battery in my glove box and another in my back pocket.
I never worry about killing my phone during the day from overuse. That said, since I've been using Zen's newest MT3G slide ROM, I haven't been able to completely drain a battery while at work.
Check out my sig (the TP2 batteries) for ideas on batteries...
in a nutshell unless you want s really big battery. The best choice is to get a 1500mAh OEM battery or the cheap 1500mAh no-name ones (which are pretty much as good) Don't fall for the mugen and Seidio ripoffs

The new OEM TP2 2100 batteries...Are you considering them the best for the Hero..? If so where's the best place to get them ?
Mac
for what it's worth, i was hesitant to spend the money on the 3500 mostly due to everyone saying that back cover looked like poo. after getting it though, i can honestly say that it is of good quality. obviously, it's black, and that will bother some people. to me though, it's kind of cool when other Hero owners (there are a ton of them, too) comment on it. they can't believe how much better i tel them the batery life is since that seems to be most people's biggest complaint (for smart phones in general). The cover is rubberized and doesn't fall off like some people say.
As for battery life, i unplug and turn my phone on at 4:45am every morning and usually turn it off around 10pm and plug it in. in that time, my email is pushed every 30 minutes, my bluetooth stays on, i stream shoutcast or pandora for about 1.5 hours (to and from work), send and receive on average 15-20 text messages, talk maybe 45 minutes, and surf the web (gotta check engadget and xda, right?) for at least 30 minutes. the gps stays on the whole time and i only use my task killer once about 15 minutes after my morning startup when all the crap is running in the background. when i turn the phone off at night, it has usually just dropped to the 50% mark. well worth the $53 if you ask me...
2000mah battery
If I'm not mistaken, isn't this the battery that fits the stock back. Previous posts lead to dead link or relisted after relisted, on and on? If this is it, it's back on ebay. I had read somewhere on this site that it was worth the long wait.

Bigger batteries.. is it really worth it?

I've really wanted to get a bigger battery, not necessarily a bigger phone. I was looking up videos on youtube, and I found a guy who actually bought one of those verizon silicon cases and used that instead of having a new backing for his phone because the battery was so much bigger. Do you guys really find not having to charge your phone for 20-30 hours worth the extra cover and stuff? I'm sure it's not an option for everyone, but why bother with that if you can just charge it sometime in between? Car chargers are cheap, and there should be some time of sleep between 20-30 hours of you using your phone (you know, where you could be charging it). Also, what is the biggest battery you can get without requiring an extra case?
The 2150 mah battery is perfect for me. The new back protects the camera lense and the leds. I have also noticed that I can hold the phone by the extended back and it feels more comfortable then before. It doesn't add that much weight and the phone is still pretty slim. Obviously I also get improved battery life as well.
I have been using the 1750 battery and it improved my battery life from 6-8 hours to 9-12ish, which is perfect for me. I just needed to make it through the work day and the regular size works for me.
I couldn't go to a bigger battery, since I have a case that works for me and I don't want to change.

My 2 cents... I have the 2150. I still go through it once or sometimes twice a day. I dont like the way it feels in my front pocket and the fact there isn't much at all if any accessories that will fit it. I just ordered (4) 1500mah batteries and 2 charges off of eBay for a whopping $20. shipped. I can use the 2150 when I am out and not near a charger or just sell it and carry extra 1500's if needed.

At that price, it sounds like you bought some off-brand garbage. While I hope that's not the case, could you please confirm/deny? What brand are these batteries?
I need the extra battery...was out today using the stock one and was dead after 5 hours (3 hours I was using My Tracks on my run). I don't care about accessories, I just need it to not run out of charge.
I find the extra ummph in the 2150 battery to be worth the lil bulge in the back....modded a silicon case with a cutout to let the excess...works pretty well and couldnt be happier...the only downfall i found so far is the charge time is nearly 4 hrs from a completely dead battery...never really timed it but it takes a while, but worth it.

I'm not sure which one he's using, but I'm using the Seido 1750. My battery life is...decent, I guess. If I bump charge. After reading so many threads on battery life for Android phones and, specifically, HTC Android phones, I'm left wondering a few things:
1. Since HTC seems to have issues charging batteries fully...if we're wiping Battery Stats appropriately (assuming you are rooted), does the phone actually "register" that it's got such a large battery to charge? Or is the phone so stupid that it stops charging it at a 1500's capacity?
2. When apps sync their data, is Android OS smart enough to have them sync at the same time? Or, does my 30 minute Facebook sync occur 10 minutes after my 30 minute Twitter sync, etc.?
New to the forums guys, it was a round-about way I got my Incredible, extended battery, and seidio battery but here is my opinion on this. If you're not gonna use it heavily throughout the day then you can get away with the 1500/1750 batteries. But if you think you're gonna get some solid use out of the phone for a day, you don't want to have to charge it throughout the day, or you don't want to have to rush home and charge it before you go out then you should get an extended battery. Using both over the past week to see which one I want to stick with, the extended is just more convienient since I don't have to think about how much battery i'm at and remember to put it on a charger.
There is a guy on here who modified his case to accommodate the 2150 battery and after seeing that I think that's what i'm gonna do. If you can get the extended cheap then definitely go for it, its just more freedom in my opinion.
Why do you want to go to an Incredible? I thought the X was a better device. Just too big? I have yet to see an Evo or X so I have know idea how big these things are.

did you get lost? your in the Incredible section of the forum, so there will bee a predominant amount of Dinc users here.
And I'd rather have an Incredible over that piece of Moto anyday
I recently bought a 2700mAh extended battery. I don't mind the extra thickness, it allows me to get a better grip on it. As for battery life its great. With the stock battery I could barely make it through 8hours at work. With the new battery I have made it 10hours and counting. I have had GPS, Sync, WiFi, and max screen brightness on all day and only at 73%. Made a few phone calls, and a few Twitter updates. Was worth it.

No I didn't get lost. I was just curious what he did not like about the X. I would rather have an X but HTC phones are much easier to hack. A Dinc hacked on to Sprint Sero is hard to say no too. I would have done an Evo but used prices on an EVO are still ridiculous and I'm waiting for HTC sort out it's display issues.
Back to the topic at hand. I'm liking my Seidio 1750. With some tweaks I'm getting better battery life then my 3GS got. I make it through a whole day of moderate usage (some web, some streaming and 5-10 calls) and still have 20% at bed time. So I'm quite happy. Someone did point out a thread on Android Central. I won't return the battery but it did dampen my spirits a little.
http://androidforums.com/accessories-incredible/119578-battery-testing-results.html
I have had the 3500, for a week. Lasts 2x the 1750 (have one) and the door design is more rugged and protects the lens well.
Worthy purchase.
I had the HTC 2150mah and returned it. I just couldn't live with the bulk.
I bought both 1750 and 2150 from HTC Pedia. They are both HTC BRAND batteries. They both work well and add work time to my INCREDIBLE. Don't buy anything but brand and you will be happy! I found HTC PEDIA to be the best place to buy accessories for my phone!

Droid 4 Extended/Aftermarket Battery

Does anyone know of any extended or aftermarket batteries that could work with the Droid 4 by replacing the internal battery?
I understand it is an internal battery, but that does not mean it cannot be removed :good:
You can take it out, but it's not supposed to be removed, so as far as i know no one makes one for the droid 4. Some ppl tried putting in a razr maxx battery, but they then found out that the battery doesn't fit into the same slot. What you can do is get an external battery or maybe you can see if they make cases with battery's in them like they do for the iphone and other devices. Hope i helped.
I have been looking for a case that has an extra battery in it and i cant seem to find one anywhere. If anyone finds one please let me know. I use my phone everything so it would be nice to not have to take my charger with me all the time.

Do Droid 4s share the same battery with a Razr? If so, the Razrs can upgrade to the Razr Maxx battery with some tinkering. I foresee problems finding a bulged backplate for a Droid 4, though.

did you read the 2nd post in this thread?
the mugen site doesn't list the d4. closest thing is the d3 and photon (not the photon q, which looks a lot like a d4), both of which have regular removable batteries, so it doesn't look good for us. esp now that it looks like the droid5 just got leaked... and it doesn't seem to have an easily replaceable battery either.

Mugen have released extended one too , check it out

I just puchased the mugen extended battery. It does add a little more bulk and unable to get a case that will fit the larger door. Other than the power meter not able to show true battery life. It is a software limitation. I do like the longevity of the battery though. My original battery would die while I was asleep after about 5 to 6 hours offBT the charger just sitting idle with no wi-fi or BT on.

hey there! Figured I would chime in on some info concerning extended batts for the D4.. Even though I am not sure that this pertains to the particular model you are looking at, I have found one that works extremely well, and does not need an extended back for the phone. It has thicker cells, and I've gotten more than a day out of it. Given that is not full use of course, but still thats almost unheard of (at least for me) when it comes to the D4. Also, I have to say that I was a bit pretentious at first, because this battery is sourced from china/japan on eBay. Anyways here is your link!

Yeh they have a extended battery 2085 mAh using stock door but the Mugen is 3800mAh which seems super capacity tho the device will become a bit thicker due to expanded door.
I don't mind the expanded door just want to know experience of people who have used it - how long it takes to charge from 0 to 100% and does it almost give double battery life to Droid4 when compared to stock battery...
PLSE PLSE share your experience before I spend $100/-
I bought 3weeks ago a new battery from eBay. It 2100mAh and the battery life is quite better than before. I was charging after 4-5 hours of use and now it around 6-7 hours of use. What kills it for me when it is 1xmode for internet.....because I have flashed over to another carrier. Im quite happy with the battery.

I am more keen to go for this as it is lmost double capacity from stock battery...

[Q] What kind of battery life could I expect under minimal use?

I'm currently using an old LG Ally, and its age is getting to me. ARMv6 means developers are loathe to support it, 128mb of RAM is a tight fit, Froyo has its myriad limitations, there's no unofficial support for the phone anymore, etc. It was a good phone, for the price, but its heyday has passed, and I need more power for when I occasionally need entertainment whilst out and about.
So, after looking at the available choices (of which there are sadly few when a physical keyboard is a requirement), I'm thinking about grabbing a Droid 4 off a certain auction site, to replace my Ally. One major concern I have, though, is battery life; particularly while standing by. At the moment my Ally can easily standby with occasional usage nearly a week without needing a charge, with the following conditions true:
Gtalk and Checkin nonsense disabled
Auto-brightness customized to only provide needed brightness (e.g. not instantly blaring to 100% in normal lighting conditions)
Data connections off/voice only, GPS off most of the time
Minimal background apps
Of course, extended use of the screen or anything utilizing partial wakelocks tends to cut that time significantly, but time in-use compared to standing by, the phone spends far more time standing by.
So. Given the above usage and applicable settings, how long could I reasonably expect the Droid 4's battery to last? Would I actually be downgrading in terms of time between charges, like some of what I've read suggests?
Don't really know, over 24 hours, if running stock ROM or a modified stock with all unused apps disabled.
If I remember correct I got a several days, when I had forgotten it was on, but was not activated on a carrier.

Hmm. On the Ally, the primary power draw is the screen, with the awake cpu and wifi coming in second and third respectively. Are the main draws the same on the d4, or is the power inefficiency coming from somewhere else?
Just look at the specs
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/LG-Ally_id4498
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Motorola-DROID-4_id6431
Specs Ally / Droid 4
Battery: 1500 mAh / 1785 mAh
Processor:Single core, 600 MHz, ARM11/Dual core, 1200 MHz, ARM Cortex-A9
Talk time: 7.50 hours / 12.50 hours
Stand-by time: 20.8 days / 8.5 days
---------- Post added at 10:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:46 PM ----------
The power inefficiency is coming from the 4 times faster processor and only 15% more battery.
I wouldn't think it would make that profound of a difference, though; the CPU should be offline for the majority of the time when the device is idling with the screen off.
I'd also assume that the 4x faster processor wouldn't use 4x or more the power, even with two cores, considering it's both newer (advancements in general processing efficiency can be assumed) and on a smaller process (45nm vs 65nm).
It's looking more like a problem of how it's used, rather than the hardware itself (though the battery is, as you point out, piddly for the device specs it's running). I'm tempted to pick one up now just to see how long I can get it to last.
I'd noticed the official standby time that you quoted before I started the thread, though, and considering those times are generally greatly inflated...it's a little worrying.
First I would disable all know safe to remove bloatware see
Disabled app/bloatware list
There are 71 apps in the list, some may require rooting to remove/disable
or
try a modified stock rom like
[ROM]D4 stock De-Odexed JB 98.72.18
Wow, 71. That's an exceptional amount of garbage.
I probably would have gone and used CM 10/11 or a ROM based on them, is CM not stable enough to use over a stock derivative on this phone?
Cm does not get as good of battery life as stock jellybean
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Ah, I see. Modified stock it is, then.
Guess I'll look into picking a d4 up to play with. Thank you for the information and your time.
if it helps you get a general idea (using the extended gold battery) i can probably get a day and a half of stand by time and i always have LTE enabled. this is using CM11. you can probably get 2 days or so if youre not using data but dont take my word for it. the screen has been the biggest battery hog for me and i keep my brightness at 10%~ most of the time. i highly recommend you look into an extended battery because the stock is pretty weak. the gold extended one is around 15 dollars while the mugen is 90~? dollars but mugens battery is way better with the only drawback being its massive size which can be a benefit to some people depending on how you plan to use the phone
I have everything "enabled". WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G. In short: My phone is running at maximum potential. With that being said... on Standby, it lasts about 24 hours. ~4 hours with the screen on and the phone actually being used.
You don't really notice it if you're like me and never use the damned thing, but I'd suggest grabbing an external battery, if you can. It's definitely an upgrade from the LG Ally. I used to have that phone, myself...
Thanks for the replies, guys. I've actually bought a D4 and am currently waiting while the seller takes their sweet time getting it into the mail. Pretty eager to get my hands on it, it's been a while since I've had some new (well, to me) tech to play with.

What ROM do you use?
The lack of screen-on time really doesn't surprise me...the whole TFT display/fairly quick processor/small battery combination and all, and the assorted radios take a fair chunk. Still, it doesn't bother me all that much, as I'm already used to the Ally's fairly mediocre screen-on life. Quite the contrary, really; if I can get the same life out of it at much greater performance levels, I'll be pretty satisfied.

Hmm, not terrible, but not especially good either considering the below. I have a few ideas to try for stretching the battery out, and am planning on trying both modified stock and various CM flavors, so we'll see.
Are you talking about this battery?
I was under the impression that any battery larger than stock would need a different backplate to fit (though to be quite honest, without handling the phone I haven't gotten much of an impression as to the various dimensions of it)...if that's not the case, I'll definitely look into grabbing the gold battery.
Just how much room is left with it installed? Is there still enough room to, say, slip an inductive charging receiver in there?

...how?
Maybe I'm just having one of those moments here, but the last I was aware of, there was a fairly consistent relationship between capacity and size/weight when it comes to li-ion batteries. I don't see how they could possibly be getting 50%+ more capacity out of the same footprint without utilizing recent advances in anode construction (unlikely) or using li-po and utilizing wasted space in the casing (not advertised as such, and a third or so of the casing being empty seems unlikely). nevermind, I thought the D4 was using a traditional plastic-encased li-ion.
I hate to call BS on something another member is apparently having some success with, but it doesn't seem possible :\
as stated by sd_shadow its the same size as the stock battery but keep in mind that the gold battery does not come with the sticky glue that holds it against the phone and in my case the backplate is fairly easy to come off and i dont think its very good for the battery to be hanging from the flex cable thats screwed into the phone.
the 99 dollar one by mugen power is way bigger and they provide the modified backplate with the battery so you dont have to worry about that unless you plan on getting clothes for your phone
if you get the official wireless charging backplate then you will not be able to use any clothes on your phone because its thicker than the stock one.
Ehh, problem being that I'm not really interested in spending another $100 for a battery on a phone that can be had for around $30-$40 used.
I'm hoping to work out some way to quickly swap batteries, so I can just carry a spare with me. I like to think I'm decently crafty, and I have way too much time on my hands these days, so...we'll see once I eventually get my hands on it.

I don't generally put anything on my phones anyway, aside from the mandatory Skinomi screen film. Regardless, what I had in mind was doing this, possibly reworked to add poppable connectors instead of hard-soldered connections.
Not really interested in overpaying for Motorola's monstrosity of a solution when there's a much more elegant option available.
there isnt really an easy way to have a backup battery on the droid 4 thats easy to swap unlike say droid 3 where you can easily pop the cover off and swap batteries. the battery on droid 4 is screwed in by 2 small screws and if you lose em your phone probably wont work until you get replacement screws
i had to make a battery change this weekend because i carry my stock battery along with the screw with me just in case and its honestly a pain unless youre in a well lit room with a table
your best bet might be to get a portable usb charger that would be usable for other devices as well. i have no experience with them but it seems a lot more comfortable than asking someone to hold a flashlight while you change the screws.
but keep in mind that if youre just listening to music you can expect the device to last about a day so needing another battery might not be for you

Wondering about that, actually. From what I've seen, all the screws do is press the ribbon cable down onto the ubiquitous springy interface pins, right? Plastic-encased batteries (like, for instance, my Ally's) provide the pressure with their weight and rigidity, rather than baffling design decisions like...well, a separate ribbon cable.
Though we don't have a particularly rigid battery to work with, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out a way to provide pressure to the pins without using screws. How solid is the battery door when it's locked in place?
I don't anticipate actually needing to be able to swap batteries on the go; after all, I thought I'd need to with the Ally but eventually tweaked it to standby properly - but figuring out if and how it can be done sounds like a fun exercise.
on a previous post i said that my back cover is fairly quick to slide off but i cant speak for others as my phone is from ebay. its supposed to be refurbished and the back cover was new but its still pretty bendable
the battery is held inside mainly by the glue and the screws. there is room for the battery to wiggle around if it doesnt have the glue which is what happens with the gold battery. if you remove the backplate and make the battery face the ground then its only gonna be held by the flex cable that doesnt stretch so its not something i advice. when i use the gold battery im very careful to never let this happen
the contact pins are held down by 2 screws and theyre covered by a small plastic piece thats pretty easy to remove by hand
if you think you can work something out than congrats but this is the biggest design flaw droid 4 has in my opinion

Yea, I saw that. I was referring more to its front-back/vertical strength, whether it could handle holding something against the battery pins.
Bendiness would be a problem, though.
Fortunately, what I have in mind shouldn't involve the back cover at all.

How much vertical wiggle space are we talking about here?
Reason I ask is, I've been looking into batteries for similarly-sized phones. The Optimus F5's battery dimensions look promising, and it's apparently either a 2150mAh or 2460mAh part (this comparison page says 2150 for OEM, but I can't seem to find such on ebay).
Both sets of dimensions are from "gold" battery listings, for consistency:
Droid 4: (7 x 4.8 x 0.4)cm / (2.76 x 1.89 x 0.16)" (L x W x H)
Optimus F5: (6.5 x 4.4 x 0.5)cm / (2.56 x 1.73 x 0.2)"
Slightly smaller, but 0.1cm/0.04" thicker. Is there enough room?
