[Q] How Purchasing a phone works in the US - HD7 General

Hey all,
I see the HD7 is now only $50 on the Amazon site.
How does this price work? If someone already has a T-Mobile contract can they buy this phone for $50 without having to spend any more money? Or does it count as an upgrade and then they have to wait another 2 years before they can buy another phone at that rate?
Do you have to renew your contract to be eligible for that price?
I know some people in the US who have a T-Mobile contract and, if possible, $50 is quite a lot less than $520 but I'm sure that this is not how it works.
Could anyone fill me in on the details?
Thanks!

There are normally at least 2 different prices for phones here on US carriers. The full price, and the contract/upgrade price (which is usually the much lower price).
To take advantage of the lower price, you either need to:
- Be eligible for an upgrade and renew your contract (on either a 1 or 2 year contract, depending on the carrier, and the price you want to pay for the phone), and sometimes pay an upgrade fee
- Start a new contract/add-a-line on a new 1 or 2 year contract, and pay an activation fee.
When you are locked into a contract, you are subject to the terms of that carrier, so that may include a required data or text package in addition to your voice plan. These required packages cannot be removed for the duration of your contract (and depending on the carrier, for the life of your phone). That also includes a termination fee should you decide to cancel before your contract is up. These fees vary depending on the carrier.

Ok, thanks very much.
We have a similar system in this country but phone prices aren't advertised as the price you have to pay to get them on contract, they're either a certain price with a certain contract or they advertise the Pre-paid price.
It was confusing seeing websites that said "Buy the HD7 now for only $50" but all cleared up now, thanks!

If you actually go through the Amazon Wireless store and buy a phone, prior to payment you have to agree to the terms with which they save you so much money. If you don't use the phone for a minimum of 120+ days, they retroactively charge you for the full amount of the hardware.

Also, if you plan on buying the phone and then cancelling the contract after a month, you can forget about it.
You will have to pay the carrier's ETF
The one-month of service, prorated accordingly
And Amazon's own termination fee.
All of this will be greater than simply buying the phone for full price.

Not sure if anyone saw this but I didn't see it posted. Today only, you can get a Tilt for $0.01 on Amazon.com. Of course you have to sign a 2 year contract but just a heads up if some of you have been looking for one.
Check again, you actually pay 174.99 and then get a mail in rebate of 175. Still though, 174.99 is better than AT&T's price, even with the refurb
is its $175 w.o contract or $175 only if you get a contract

Is AT&T PDA Personal – Unlimited data mandatory and for how long...?

Greetings:
Is PDA Personal – Unlimited data mandatory to get this phone at a reasonable price ($99)? If so, how long do I have to keep this plan? I never use internet on a cell phone; however, as a trade off I am willing to keep the Data plan for a shortest period of time if at all possible.
My purchase plan for AT&T Tilt would be as follow:
- AT&T 2-year Contract (One-time activation fees apply: first new line of service, $36; each new additional line, $26; contract extension, $18.)
- Transfer old number
- AT&T FamilyTalk Nation 550 Rollover Minutes Unlimited $59.99
- PDA Personal – Unlimited data $30.00 for a shortest period of time if at all possible.
Per this conditional $250 discount from Amazon, I am allow to make change to the account after 6 month of contract. Am I reading this regulation correctly?
Any advice or additional comments is greatly appreciated.

Read contract term (5)
Data plan
If you purchased the phone from a store the data plan needs to be there until you get your rebates.
If you purchased online from like wirefly, they have a dual contract which is ussually 6 mos.
So, after rebates or 6 mos., depending on where you purchased.
After that call 611, or customer service @ 18003310500, and tell them to change your IMEI to all 1's and remove your pda packkage and add unlimited media net for 15 dollars.
I am an ATT retail representative and as long as the phone is hidden from imei, then you can do what you want, it will not extend your contract like other companies.
mayad79:
Thank you much for your advice.
If AT&T customer service put all 1's into the IMEI, does this mean that the phone will be hidden from IMEI? If so, are they willing to do it easily?
Can I just simply cancel the PDA package without adding anything? Or is there any other plan that is cheaper ($5~$10) than Media net which I will never going to use? I just want to use the phone as a regular phone and GPS device.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Ok, First. To get your rebate you have to have the feature for 6 months.
second. NO att rep will change your imei number to all 1's its not possible.
so if you dont care about your rebate, then cancel your feature and change it to media net. if you bought if from a authorized retailer then they have what is called a dealer agreement with them and you. and they could charge you the difference you paid for the phone and the full retail price, since that is how they make there money.
Another thing, as long as you bought the phone from att. I.E. its branded at&t then they will always know what device you are using. it does not matter what you have cust care change your imei to. They just have better things to do than look to see if the millions of customers are using the right features.
KD8DNS:
Thanks for the additional information.
Per your posting, I will be able to cancel the data service plan after receiving my rebate and after 6 month of service without paying any penalty or additional fee. Am I understand correctly?
Thanks

You can cancel the data plan whenever you want. But to get the rebates you have to play the rules.
had data plan removed without penalty
So my situation may be a rare case...
11 months ago I got my ATT tilt w/ family plan including the data plan as required for the rebate... ATT somehow didn't activate my data plan when i received the phone, as well as some other issues with rate charges that which didn't add up. The rate charges were corrected when I called in, but the data plan issue was left unsolved, they told me to contact amazon.
I asked amazon why this happened & why the data plan wasn't included... they said i have to activate it after i relieved the plan, repeating the same disclaimer nonsense as the website. I know this isn't the norm because previous experience by friends stated that amazon automatically stacks on the plan at time of purchase.
Long story short, 7 months go by & i did not get slapped with a $250 penalty, so I really don't know how serious Amazon in following disclaimer #5...

$500 deal from T-mobile

On T-mobile, there is a $500 deal here, no annual contract
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/default.aspx#HTC-HD7
I can't figure out exactly what this means. Is this just the phone itself without having to pay monthly? Or do I have to pay monthly but not go by their contract? I really want to buy it that cheap, but I went to their site and I find it rather confusing.
lol thats without a contract of course u have to pay your monthly usage
There are 2 options:
(1) Buy the phone at a subsidized price ($199 or is it $249? for the HD7). You are locked into a 2 year contract with a $200 or so early termination fee. You pay a higher price than with option 2 for your monthly service. (This is the "Even More" plan.)
(2) Buy the phone at full retail price ($499 for the HD7). You are not locked into any contract and can leave T-Mobile, buy a new phone, etc. at any time. You *also* pay less for your monthly service with this option (This is the "Even More Plus" plan).
Hope that helps.
Regardless of which pricing option you choose, you still need to pay for service.
If you get the phone at a discount, you are stuck on a 2-year contract and pay slightly higher monthly service fees. This is called "Even More".
If you choose to get the phone at full price, there is no contract and you pay slightly lower monthly service fees. This is called "Even More Plus".
Refer to the T-Mobile website for more details on pricing for these plans. In either case, you can choose to spread out payments of your phone over a few or many months, or just pay up front for everything.
In the long run, going with Even More Plus is cheaper. Less monthly service fees, spread out phone payments over a long period of months, and best benefit of all, no contract.
do note that if u have t-zones with t-mobile, it works on the hd7! that means it's only going to cost you $3-6/mo for full internet access. if u have such a plan, you can save approximately 27 dollars/month on data alone. over a course of a 2 yr contract, that's 648 dollars. you can then spend the money you saved on the next phone and sell off the hd7

Sign The Petition: Get Rid Of Contracts For Wireless Service

Getting rid of carrier contracts is a win for customers. Verizon's CEO, Lowell McAdam, has already expressed his willingness to do away with them if consumers speak loud enough about it. So here's your chance: sign this petition to tell Verizon to end carrier contracts and create an affordable way for consumers to purchase their devices. If you're a current customer, you don't have to switch carriers or have plans to switch carriers. I've been a long-time Verizon customer and I don't see myself ever leaving; but I want that choice myself; I don't want them making it for me and imposing stiff penalties if I do decide to leave.
T-mobile Did It, Why Cant Verizon And Then The Others Do It Too? Lets create a ripple effect in the wireless industry! Thanks For Your Support.

I've been a long time T-mobile customer. It's not that straight forward. I asked about going from my current contract to a non contract plan. Problem is, my four lines all have contracts. I had to buy out my current contracts to go to a non contract. I would have to pay $600 before I was able to go to non contract plans! :banghead: I would have to wait a year or so before that price will go down to a reasonable price. Now, the deal is, it's a "non contract plan. You pay a down payment on a phone, then pay it off in two years. Hmm, what happens if you want to leave in a month after you get your contract, that's right, you owe the balance of a phone. But, at the same time, you can bring an old phone to sign up with Tmobile. It has its positives, and negatives

Well, you'd have to remember the basic principle. Nothing is free in this world, as so you will have to pay for the phone you bought and nothing more if you decide to leave. Keep in mind, you can pay as much off as you'd like overtime if you dont pay in full from the start. I think getting hit with your device fee is the same as breaking your 2 year contract fee. They both equal the same more or less....
Lets say that you want to pay $100 instead of the regular $70/month, which btw includes your $20/month device fee. Then you would be paying $50 and effectively paying off your phone much quicker. Its definitely better than a car loan as it doesnt incur interest.
Above all, I think if you payed for your phone in FULL from the start -meaning your on prepaid- then your OPTIONAL monthly payment should be lower and not the same as someone on a postpaid plan. The other carriers love to charge the same amount of money for postpaid vs prepaid.
Bump
Seriously no support? You'd rather be forced to buy phones with contracts?

T-Mobile 2-for-1: early termination?

T-Mobile is offering two Note 8s for the price of one. There's a 24-month payment plan (and service obligation) for the full price of both phones, but you get a rebate of one phone's full price via prepaid MasterCard ("allow 8 weeks").
The terms state that "If you cancel service, remaining device balances are due". But if you've already got your rebate, then you're still getting both phones for the price of one, even after early cancellation, correct?

Yes but seems like a lot of work and start up money.
1. You have to pay tax on both
2. There may be a down payment of 225 for both devices
3. 2-3 months of service eat into the potential profits
4. 2-3 months of depreciation eat into the potential profits
5. Better pray the rumors of the new s9 being announce in January doesn't effect note 8 resell price

I think I get what you're saying, but, the language does imply clearly enough that both phones are financed on EIP:
https://www.t-mobile.com/offers/deals-hub?icid=WMM_TMNG_Q416DLSRDS_O8RLYN4ZJ4I6275
Pre-order one Samsung Galaxy Note8 and get a second select phone free.
After rebate with finance agreements and new line of service. If you cancel service, remaining device balances are due.
Upgrade to the all-new Galaxy Note8 and do more on America’s fastest 4G LTE network.
Fastest claim based on download speeds. Limited time offer; subject to change.
Financing agreements for both devices, qualifying credit, and a new line of qualifying service required. If you cancel service, remaining device balances are due.
Galaxy Note8: $210 down and $30/mo x 24, full pre-rebate price $930. Galaxy S8: $30 down and $30/mo x 24, full pre-rebate price $750; Galaxy S8 +: $80 down and $30/mo x 24, full pre-rebate price $800. 0% APR. Full tax on pre-rebate price for both devices due at sale.
Rebate on device of equal or lesser value via Prepaid MasterCard® Card. This Card is issued by Sunrise Banks N.A., Member FDIC, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International Incorporated. Mastercard is a registered trademark of Mastercard International Incorporated. Use of this card constitutes acceptance of the terms and conditions stated in the Cardholder Agreement. Cards will not have cash access and can be used everywhere Mastercard debit cards are accepted. Must be active and in good standing when card is processed. Allow 8 weeks.
The free part is when you apply the Pre-Paid MasterCard to the balance of either phone. Once that is done, you are likely free to cancel service on the device's line that you pay off, but,I'd double-check that the other device balance doesn't become due as well (I doubt it,but,I'd check nevertheless, the language there is a bit murky).
If you cancel the new line before receiving your rebate (which takes around 2 months to receive) you will not receive your rebate. So, don't cancel until you get your mastercard in the mail. Once you receive it, you are free to pay off the new line installment and cancel. Cancelling the free line does not make the 2nd device installment due in full.
---------- Post added at 09:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:19 PM ----------
Also, regarding the 2nd line eating into profits, you can more than cover that cost for the line for 2 months by selling off the 2 x gear 360's you'll receive for preordering.
