Hey guys, sorry to bother you, but i seriously need some help here. i have a droid incredible (love this phone to death!), but i use it as a primary phone, which means flashing roms and playing with my phone interrupts my "text my special friend" time, so i decided to buy a used g1 from ebay! great idea hu? ...not really!
</bg info>
well, i received my g1 today, and i was so excited. i checked and made sure everything was fine, so i turned it on, when i saw that there was no sim :/. luckily, i had an extra sim that my dad used when he had an old nextel phone, so i decided why not try and popping it in... but that didnt work because the phone was not unlocked >:/, so i pressed the dismiss button, then the real problem came in... the phone was completely wiped! so that meant i had to "touch the android to begin", well i did and i thought i was fine until the gmail screen came up and i have no way to sign on to gmail! i cannot access my home screen on the phone! i tried calling tmobile and htc for an unlock code to see if that helped, but no, nothing. i dont know what to do, if there is anything you guys can help me with, please reply! i really want to use this phone! thanks for reading this, and sorry for wasting your time! ...oh, and please, no flaming!
Connect to wifi
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
It doesn't give me an option to connect to wifi. Ive tried hitting menu, then wireless settings, but it does not say anything about wifi :/
is there any way i can get my phone rooted without having to access the homescreen? any update.zips that help me bypass the "touch the android" screen?
bump?

Your going to want to downgrade the phone back to 1.0 if it isn't already, and then follow this guide to connect to the Google servers via WiFi.
edit: I'm a new user, and not allowed to post links. So go to Google and type "G1 login to Google via wifi", it will be the first link you'll see. Make sure to first downgrade to 1.0, or else it won't work.

How do I downgrade to 1.0?! Lol, I'm not really sure how to find out if I am on 1.0 or not :/
It's basically downgrading back to RC29 (US G1) or RC7 (UK G1). Just search and download the DREAMIMG.nbh file and put it on the root of your SD card. Then go to bootloader mode (camera+power), and flash it. Restart phone and you'll be on Android 1.0.
Here is the link if you have a US G1: http://www.multiupload.com/9593XFAEYL
PM me if you need anymore help or if you're stuck.

Hi I posted this in the wrong section earlier (sorry!):
Hi all,
I'm new at posting here so I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I usually come here for answers to my G1 questions but have never needed to post before (yes, I'm a lurker).
Basically, after drunkenly failing to pattern unlock my phone, I pressed 'forgot pattern' and was brought to the Gmail sign in/unlock screen.
The problem is that it keeps saying my username or password are invalid but they're not!
I checked by logging into gmail on my PC and nothing has changed.
I tried 'username', '[email protected]' and [email protected]' to no avail.
I have a UK model and have rooted it using Jesusfreke's RC8 then the update to RC9 using Moussam's root app.
I don't really want to have to wipe my phone but will do so if necessary; I was just hoping someone could tell me why its not accepting my details!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Dan
EDIT: I have since tried changing my gmail password and associating other email addressed with my account but using these details makes no difference.
P.S. Edit: I'm wondering; if I hard reset, given that I don't have the JF build on my SD card anymore, what will happen?
Have you verified that you do infact have your APN account activated ? So that you have the dataplan active...
I'm sorry, you will have to treat me like an idiot and spell things out for me.
I don't know what an APN is. My data plan is unlimited, I've never had any problems with the phone (except that after rooting every app seems to force close if used for more than 3 mins), all I did was get the pattern lock wrong. I can still recieve texts (but not read them) and can still get calls.
I can connect the phone to my (win 200) PC and boot up into fastboot or recovery but haven't got a clue where to go from there....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485988
Just google for adbwin.zip instead of downloading the entire sdk in step 1.
I looked at that thread and further down found a link to another thread from someone who had the exact same problem as me.
He tried everything (including Haykuro's pattern defeat) but nothing worked.
I guess I'll just wibe and reflash! Pain in the arse but I've been on this all day trying to find a way around it and I probably could have reflashed and reinstalled everything twice by now!
Sorry if I caught you a tad bit late....
Did you try signing in without the @gmail.com? I've never logged into my phone with that. I just simply use my user name without anything afterward

It doesn't matter anyway; all three should work.
Hard reset?

I've been locked out of my phone this way and had a very hard time getting back in.
The solution, for me, was to use [email protected] and obviously your correct password. Neither the username or [email protected] would work for me.
This worked for me, so again, check that you've typed the correct username with @googlemail.com and make sure you type your password carefully.
THis is what happened...
Yesterday, my brother gave me his old Htc Dream, because he bought the Hero (that bastard)...i dont have Data Plan, my mother have a Blackberry Data Plan, i tried it on my phone, but it didnt worked...
Today i decided to make a hard reset to replace my brother's google account and use mine....after the reset, the phone asked for my Google Account, i provided the user and pass, but...well, as you have guessed:
no data plan = no validation of the account = locked phone
I have made some research trough the Net, and found some interesting threads, but, as you know, in order to by-pass this screen, i need to have installed RC29 or older....but my phone have RC30 or later...i can tell beacuse when i type <enter>reboot<enter> on the "Click ont he android" screen, nothing happens...so...im in trouble...
Any suggestions? It is possible to downgrade to RC29 and then root with the phone like this?
Thx for reading

It's been awhile since I've been on a hero build so I personally can't tell you, but every person has there own opinion on which one is the best. The best thing I can tell you is to try them out or wait for someone that uses hero and can tell you. I haven't used that guide but here is a great guide.
http://androidoverdrive.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7
and theres a couple other guides on the site to that you can look at to see which one you want to use.
i've been all over this site as well as others trying to find a fairly simple way to root my T-Mobile G1, non-dev phone running Cupcake 1.6. It looks like the 1-Click Rooting will work but first, before i do anything, i wanted to see if this procedure was still working.
Is it?
When i d/l Cyanogen's Mod i noticed that it d/l the update-cm-4.2.5-signed.zip version as well as the 4.2.7.1. Which one should i use?
It looks like the Radio is the same, so that would be one less step to perform, correct?
i'm attaching a .txt file which i've made so that things/steps are a little clearer for me to follow.
Any help would be appreciated. Have a great morning!
I am a total newb on the scene but from what I understand you can still do the one click root as long as you revert back to cupcake (RC7 for europe, RC29 for US? You will need to check). You can't do it on Donut (Which is 1.6 is it not?).
I might be way off, so hopefully someone more experienced can help you.
As far as the rest is concerned, I have no idea, sorry.
Sigh. i think you're correct -- i already have the 1.6 - Donut. Grrr.
Now i gotta figure out how to get back down to 1.5.
Thanks, zamtetsuken, that was a great help. Maybe i should just stick to the "If it's not broke, don't fix it." routine.
What advantages have you seen with your change to root?
Have a great afternoon!
You're most welcome.
I have been reading (and watching videos) from this website: http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g1-dream/ today and they have videos that show you how to get back to cupcake, the 1-click root for the G1 and other good stuff.
I haven't actually done it yet, I am trying to do a lot of reading before I do try it, just so I don't mess things up. I know which rom I want to use but some methods require to have a SDCard reader when you're flashing the radio, rom etc, so I need to see if there is a work around as I do not have one. All I hear is good stuff about rooting though, apart from obviously those who brick their phone.
If you do it please let me know how you got on .
If you're running 1.6, part of one of the threads says that you can format your SDcard with your telephone! You don't need a card-reader. i don't have one either and am running PCLinuxOS 2009, fully updated on my home computer.
Have a great afternoon! and thanks for the link to the videos!

Yeah, I knew about the format option in 1.6 but in one of those videos once he reverts to cupcake (I believe) he takes out the SD Card while the phone is off and then puts the files on the card and then puts it back into the phone and switches it on. I will have to find out whether I can do it differently,
Thanks for the reply , you going to try it?

lol -- i'm working on it.
Am still trying to find an answer to a couple of questions, like will we have access to Market again? Whether i can set Google up with the kind of buy-as-you-go minutes that i have in Mexico through TelCel and wondering how i'm going to obtain all those WEP keys i've got on my present phone again.
Have a great evening!

I have successfully rooted my phone .
You do get access to Market again. It just seems to work exactly as before . I am not sure how you would get the WEP keys again .
Hey! Congratulations!!! Wow! i'm stuck on the "Set up Gmail." Since i don't have a 3G Plan i'm in the process of getting past STEP1, Sub-section 6 -- lol.
i'm going to call a friend - my son-in-law - and get him to read off the APN settings on his G1. i set it up for him and i think we use the same carrier, TelCel. i need the MCC and MNC settings - i think, in order to get WiFi on this. Then i can set up Google and proceed.
i also had some strange things happen even in Sub-section 4! But it's fixed, so we're still hangin' in there.
Thanks for posting again, Congrats!, and have a wonderful evening!

I answered your post on AndroidOverdrive Fraz. Hopefully it will be what you need to get you up and running.
Thanks, guys, i'm rooted!!!
Have a great evening!
P.D. if anyone is interested in a .txt blow-by-blow, real life experience of how i got this thing working, let me know & i'll upload it or e-mail it to you.
Yea!
First of all, a hello, and thank you, to this forum. You guys have a ton of great content, and I'd be completely sunk without this site.
Anway, here's my issue.
1) My friend had a G1, it worked great, activated on his t-mobile data plan.
2) He gave it to me, but first, he did a factory reset on it. This was unfortunate, as it was on cupcake, with RC33, and I, and everybody I know, lack a data plan.
3) I downgraded to the old android, and RC29, so I could WiFi activate.
4) I activated it successfully via WiFi, but it quickly developed a tendancy to randomly shut down, all the time, unless it was on a charger.
5) Figuring this was somehow caused by the downgrade, I decided to root, and update to a later version.
6) I settled on Cyanogen, and installed it.
7) Now, I'm stuck back at the "touch the android to begin" screen, and in my original dilemma. The <enter>reboot</enter> command doesn't work, now, as it did on RC29. This confuses me. Why is cyanogen, an OS all about customizing, not allowing me to activate via wifi, or have that good old hidden terminal? How do I activate via wifi, on cyanogen?
If you are running Cyanogen, just touch the android and skip the activation procces...all custom roms have that option.
If you dont get that option, then you are not running Cyanogen. As simple as that.
Hey, thanks. Yeah, I just sort of gave up hope when I saw the "touch the android" thing, and couldn't use the old RC29 method.
Sure, enough, it was there, I got wifi on, and am now activated.

My happiness is short lived.
I thought cyanogen would fix it, but my phone just started with the random shutdowns again.
It was first triggered when I updated, and attempted to run google maps.
I'm not sure if this is a coincidence, or if reinstalling cyanogen, and avoiding google maps like a plague, might stop thi form happening.
Any insights?
help
how can I activate it later after using the skip method?
I can connect to a wifi spot in school. then what? If I open the market app, It would promt me to register an account, But I always get errors even If I'm already connected to wifi.
So I've got a G1 that was on T-Mobile but I've been with Sprint since October. What can I do with it besides sell it?
Can I activate it without a cell plan/sim card if I upgrade the ROM? It was rooted way back when, but it's running an old version of 1.5.
If I managed to activate it on a 2.1 or 2.2 ROM, would I be able to download apps from the market? I'm wondering if I could just use the phone on WiFi around the house, maybe use it as a remote Google Talk device or something.
Other ideas are much appreciated!

yes, yes, yes ,yes and yes
check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316 worked for me
and then maybe a little http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684101
and just for good measure http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
steps root, update spl recovery and radio (in proper order) , and flash some roms.
Cool, so I can do all the above then! Man, activating a phone without a SIM is a pain! I'm surprised there isn't an easier way built into a ROM. I also hope it still works since it's almost a year an a half since the method was last updated! Thanks for the links, much appreciated!
Don't worry, most roms can skip the google sign in process without much hastle. A few days ago I found an article that says that you can skip the google sign in by pushing the 4 corners of the "press the android to continue" screen. Push them in this order:
12
43
I can link you to a video of this if my instructions aren't clear. I haven't tried it on every rom but I know for sure CM6 let's you do that
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using XDA App
what would be considered the 1,2,3, and 4th corner. If you could send something over to me i would appreciate it. I would like to turn this into a little gameboy type thing for my daughter.
