Hi,
I was testing my phone's graphics power. I'm using latest MIUI, so I downloaded the same wallpapers that MIUI has by default and copied them to SD, but when I set them as my wallpaper, their quality is reduced alot. But when I set it via the default wallpapers that MIUI has (the same wallpaper) it gets alot alot better quality than the one set from SD. It's the same for all other images, not just MIUI wallpapers...
(By the way when I view the wallpaper image in my PC its quality/res is fine)
*bump* anyone please?
I figured out that when you want to select an image via wallpaper gallery to set it as wallpaper, the gallery app zooms on a specific location of the image (the square cadre). Does anyone know how to disable that zooming feature so it displays the whole wallpaper and doesn't focus on just one specific place of it?
So no one knows how to?
Don't use the gallery app to set wallpapers.. Use other tools, search the market.

I think you didn't read/understand what I said completly... that's my problem!! if you zoom on it via the square it will reduce the quality, and the square can't cover all the picture or you can't even remove it!!

The square can cover most of the picture, with the exception of the proportions (Max the height, but maybe a little of the sides get cut off). Or at least, I can do it...

I'm sorry, I didn't want to be rude... I was angry a bit
But mine doesn't cover all of the picture, it only covers some of it. It seems to have a height limit
No worries.
How do you mean you can't stretch the square? I just grab top and bottom, and stretch (note; if you touch a single point, it zooms in for some retarded reason)

Yeah I have no problems stretching. But wether I stretch or not, when I set it as wallpaper it kinda zooms in to the square location and it reduces picture quality...
Are you sure you're not catching it with your finger?

Can I ask that what resolution is the wallpaper that you took screenshot of? I exactly do it the same way you do. But quality get reduced when it's as my wallpaper...
I've no idea... I have no way to tell from my phone, and I'm nowhere near a computer...
Did you crop your images, because that screws with the resolution?

Nope. I didn't do anything to my images
Personally I use dodel wallpaper maker. Its in the market for 99 cents. It allows for full image wallpapers and also portrait non-scrolling.
Many others that just want a higher quality non reduced image use wallpaper set and save, its free.

Can you please give me the apk or androlib market link of one of the full image wallpaper apps? I searched alot for both names you gave me but I didn't find anything

Hopefully that works, doing this on by phone because I left my laptop at home...
And the reason you couldn't find it was my misspelling sorry.
This is the ad supported version so it will be free; hopefully it does what you need it to do!

You need to download hi res pictures and stretch the square to cover as much as possible. Gallery has nothing to do with it... If you zoom something it gets pixelated.

Can we get a wallpaper thread started? I think the wallpaper dimensions of the Captivate are different from other phones right? Also.. how do i go about deleting the stock wallpapers, and adding some to replace them?
You can download or put an image in the sd card. Open it up in Gallery, Select Menu, More, Set As
You can then set as Wallpaper (or Contact Icon) and it'll even give you a scaling box for cropping to the correct dimensions.
My favorite so far:

Dimensions
I think the wallpaper dimensions for the crop are ratios of 6:5. So that means 720x600 will fill up the entire crop box, as will 1080x900. Of course you do not have to use these dimensions for your wallpapers but then you get parts of it left out. Just what I have found playing around with it on my own. Hope that helps.
Here is what I made (Yeah Im a Rush fan)
Here are some I made yesterday after browsing the new uploads at Stock Exchange. I resized them to 960x800 at 96 dpi and they look pretty good on my phone.
the one i use. i organize the icons to follow the outside edge of the car so its unobstructed.

there is a great app in the marketplace called, Backgrounds
its pretty much a full easy access web search of a ton of wallpapers, you can change category, apply directly from the app, or save the image and apply it later. I recommend you check it out.
yea that app is good has a ton of wallpapers
Does anyone know where the Captivate stores its wallpapers? I'd like to see what size/format the default options are, and put my custom ones in the same place, but I can't seem to find them. I'd be ok knowing where either the TouchWiz or LauncherPro wallpapers are stored.
Also, here's some wallpapers I cropped from images found through google image search (the originals got compressed by the forum, originals are in the zip file):

wallpapers aren't actually stored in any directory they're actually in the app.
go fond the stock Rom and extract it.
go to the /system/app directory and find the home app.
it'll be in a .apk format
you can rename it to .zip and extract it.
the wallpaper will be somewhere in there
I use this picture as my background. I took it while in afghanistan.

That looks like the Launcher Pro without the gradient.
Anyway I +1 the Zedge suggestion. It's got some great ones, especially some darker looking ones that show off the Super AMOLED quite nicely
Why do out phones have a pretty bad wallpaper system? I mean, one wallpaper can look great on the internet, or in the gallery, and is a posterized mess as a wallpaper. Happened ot me multiple times, with dark grey gradients.
Here's a wallpaper to try, look at the top and bottom.

Hmm, on further inspection, it's almost like it's increasing the image brightness, even though my screen is on pretty close to as low as it goes.
I imagine it would have to do with the image being optimised for an lcd which suffers from low contrast/saturation and being used on an OLED screen which doesnt have the issues. The net result is the image looking like its been posterized/ over saturated.

Not sure what you mean. When viewed on the gallery on my captivate, and viewed on the LCD on my computer, it looks great. When I try and put it as my wallpaper, it looks like trash. Did you try?
Another theory, it looks heavily compressed as well, when I try and set is as my wallpaper.
I can attest to this matter. I too would like to know of a solution to this as I've avoided several wallpapers due to this problem.
I've attached two screenshots, one from the homescreen and the other from the gallery. The image posterization is quite apparent.
That's the only reason I use "backgrounds" app: it applies sharp looking wallpapers. Any time I have to use the square/resizing tool the results are very compressed and poor. Shame because I wish I could use camera pictures as a wallpaper

I was wondering the same thing...for example, the images that came with my phone are so razor sharp but others seem to always be a bit blurry or not as detailed.
Do we need to get a super high res image and let the phone downconvert or something?

That happens when you try to use a wallpaper that doesn't have the correct res try a 960x800 or any other proportional resolution based on that and it will look good.

Thing is, I get this on 960*800 and proportional resolutions. Definitely seems to be an issue with the wallpaper app.
Not sure if this is part of the problem, but what's the DPI on the images you're having trouble with? I read somewhere that 96 DPI would look good on our phones and haven't noticed any problems with applying wallpapers from images that I edited to 960x800 at 96 DPI.

FYI, DPI means absolutely nothing in digital images. Only physical pictures, since there is no inherent physical size in a digital picture. In fact, the dpi of our phones screens is about 230. So I doubt it's it, but I'm not around where I can try.

Shouldn't be the problem. Digital images don't actual have a dpi. Only physical ones do. And anyway, our screen dpi is ~230.
Short answer: wallpaper app problem, use a 3rd party app.
Long answer:
This is a problem since the first android phone, the G1.
When you set the wallpaper using the default app it will compress it with jpeg and some default setting therefore loosing some quality.
Other thing I read somewhere that the Nexus one had a banding problem due to the screen itself... Read here (it's not long) http://gizmodo.com/5477320/the-nexus-ones-dirty-display-secret-updated

I would love one with Twitter (Plume), Browser, Music, Market, Root Explorer, Phone, Camera on the main screen (since I lock my wallpaper). I think I am going to try the free alt to photoshop and see if I can learn how to do this.... trying to make it look like yours.
The Vibrant has a super amoled screen, so the more black the better... but what I loved were how crisp the icons were that you used, and the shadow... which REALLY helps the look.
Very jealous.... I need to learn!
UN F%#%$# BELIEVABLE !!!
Genius Genius Genius way of customizing homescreen icons. Rockin this now!!!
I tried several times to download the transparent icon but get a blank screen all the time. Tried it from my vibrant haven't tried from my computer. But I would think I shouldn't have problems from phone thoe. Anybody else having this problem? Tried with stock browser and dolphin hd, same results.

What do you mean by blank screen? You should just be able to right click save as.
And not wanting this to sound snarky or anything, but because it's transparent, the blank screen makes sense.
Something I put together real quick, needs better spacing with the icons.

I use a 5x5 desktop and have the labels hidden in ADW settings. The icons are exactly where they should be to press. I also lock my screen, that is why the black is there on the left/right... I suppose I should have just used a 480x800 background and then I wouldn't have had to guess so much on where to put the icons, right?? Still learning....

Believe it or not, its pretty easy.
So I'll give some quick directions that you can play around with however you'd like. So I use CS5 but I'm pretty sure it is the same process, however I'm not sure about Photoshop Elements.
1. Ok so you may have done it differently but I imagine that each of the icons is, or was, a layer at one point. If not, re-create it in a separate piece copy and paste it how you'd like it and you are ready to go.
2. So once the icon is its only layer go to the layer panel on the right and right click on the layer.
3. Select Blending Options
4. Play around with each option to the left. You can simply select the check box and the default characteristics for that option will be applied to your image layer.
5. If you select the whole bar on the left, for example Drop Shadow, it'll highlight blue. Then you can tweek the drop shadow, the length of it, the opaque-ness of it, which direction the shadow comes from, etc.
Play around with probably just the top five options on the left (Drop Shadow - Bevel & Emboss) Those will effect the depth of the image.
If you need more help I will do what I can, just ask
So I was kind of wondering why the native horizontal resolution of our screen is larger then my original template. I started playing around with the ddms.bat in the SDK and sure enough the native resolution of the screen capture was 1280 horizontal. So I knew my original template was wrong and this explains the small amount of blurriness when the wallpaper is applied.
After a bit more playing in photoshop with the screen caps from ddms and this lovely aspect ration tool, I give you all the proper Xoom Wallpaper template. Same as last time the PSD is attached in the zip file below.

I gave up on looking for the "perfect" templates because in the end all you are doing is producing an image that looks good ONLY in landscape or ONLY in portrait.
You should include what the images are going to look like in both modes, just for brevity.

Thats not really true. This would be the same issue on ANY android device it was used in landscape mode. The problem is that the Wallpaper crop tool is still setup for portrait use, thus we need a guide to make sure what we want visible shows correctly.
What I would really like to do is edit the crop tool to add in 4 additional guides that would show what portion of the image will show on the desktop. It would not be hard to do if I know what to edit.
xoom from Moto
I understand that. But what I do not get is releasing this OS for Xoom with so many quirks. I have worked in Android for phones for a couple years. I have worked with Moto in the past, and the combo Moto/Android is not a good combo on tablet. Moto still does not get the consumer.
Just my opinion. I like the xoom and that is why I am a bit frustrated. It was a chance to regain a bit of market share. But for a consumer iPAD(which I also have) the xoom is way too problematic.
Ok so I don't have photoshop but when I used this template with gimp...my images were still not fitting the screen properly
Just to explain what this does:
- The image portion of the wallpaper (almost) fits the screen perfectly.
- The top black bar only appears when in app drawer. That's why I a have "Applications" labeled there, so it appears in the background.
- The bottom black bar appears when in "+" or widgets view, which is the reason why I labeled it "Add-ons"
- The white all-around bar is the section that won't show up at all when using XoomWallpaper_2.zip
So here is a "template" I made in GIMP. I attached both the .xcf for GIMP and also the actual .png wallpaper for those who want to try it to see what it does.
EDIT: XoomWallpaper.zip is for larger images (eg. 1892x903) and XoomWallpaper_2.zip is for smaller images (eg. 1132x540)
PS: I use "wallpaper set and save" to set my wallpapers. So I don't need to crop the image.
MOD EDIT: links removed
Widget Maker
Widget Maker is a unique application which allows users to create panels - superwidgets as we like to call them - comprised of other widgets installed
on your device. You can fine tune the position of many elements and their alignment to fit more stuff on your screens in a neater arrangement.
If you use our awesome Meta Widget, this app will also help you correctly create panels with lots of complex widget elements like tables or squeeze a
larger number of comic strips into the confines of your home screen.
Please note that some widgets are not fully supported, including a number of stock Google ones.
The DEMO application will function for 7 days, after which time you will be prompted to purchase the KEY if you want to continue viewing your panels.
INSTRUCTIONS - to get started, simply open the app, create a new panel and add new widgets into it by pressing the + sign in the lower left corner.
Once a widget has been added you can move it around the grid much as you would on your home screen.
NOTE - once you have saved a panel, it can be added as a widget through the widget picker. On some Android versions, you may have to manually
stretch the widget once it has been added.

Thank you very much! If you get a chance please rate and review it on the store!
This is quite amazing! Will there be an ability added to rotate the Widgets within the panel instead of just resizing and moving them?

Outstanding. Pro version of this and meta-widget bought without a moment's hesitation. 5 star review incoming.

Can make for some outstanding widget layouts. Lightning launcher supports such widget rotations. It would be great to see it added.

Ill have a look later... but it sounds superlative.
Here is a quick panel made for weather, i just made it fast, anyway it could be more beautiful and useful, but i didn't had any ideas. Anyway i just want to say a few things:
1.What it's that little red exclamation present near widgets?
2.Sometimes selecting simple text or images, they show up fine in meta widget, but fail to appear in widget maker(panel).
3.Panel counter(in name) doesn't decrease if you remove panel.
I would make a video tutorial too, bit later. Nice work ftg!

I will look into it first thing!
The idea is interesting, I was thinking of making this long time ago, but I was waiting to see an implementation of it. Which yours is very poor. It has terrible results when switching portrait-landscape, does not coop well with decreased DPI. It's just not pro and well thought out. It's just so poor.
I see... it seems you have written the same thing about Meta as well. Guess you'll just have to make your own like you planned. Or give some contructibe feedback instead of trolling like a tool knowitall.
0.9.2.1
Fixed panel naming when creating new widgets
Fixed alignment issues of widgets with no padding
Fixed cell size not sticking under some conditions
Anything to report?
Trying to make a widget of Penny Arcades comics (latest as the widget) but it shows up as blank unless I long press on it and move it around and it shows it there. Kind of strange.
Hi. Im not sure what it could be. Please post a link to the strip you want. I use go comics which work perfectly...

Hey speaking of comics...
I have a widget of the current XKCD comic. Is there a way to get the ALT Text to show?
Thanks
I'm not sure, maybe, I'll have a look over the weekend.
