What to do after I root my droid - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I've had my droid for about 3 months now and I'm thinking of rooting my droid I have the one push of a button root but after I root it what do I do. My friend was telling me about kernals and roms but I don't know were how to do this. I know I'm a newbie but please any assistance? Would be nice thanks.

whenever you flash a new ROM or Kernel, just in case your phone doesn't like the Kernel you flash. for example my phone doesn't like anything but a Low Voltage Kernel, whereas my friends Droid doesn't like anything but Ultra Low Voltage Kernel. Each phone is different.
Currently my phone is running CyanogenMOD 6.1RC4 with the NEXtheme with the Stock CM 6.1 Kernel. So far I absolutely love it. I am so happy that I decided to Root my phone. Now Im slowly teaching my self how to build ROMS and themes and such.

Kinda, yes.
Custom ROMs, Pretty much....I'm trying to figure the nitty gritty out but basically, If I understand correctly, this will give us the ability to load custom ROMs once all is cleaned up.
Root has already been achieved a bit ago. So you can root your phone now!!
Birdman and Koush are amazing. so while I appreciate the shout for the news, all props go to them!!!!

Ok so I used universal androot to root my phone, now what.every thing looks thee same.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
you need to read the stickies in every part of the hero forum and do some google searches and you will see what you need to do. after about two weeks of reading and lurking here you will have all the info you need to make your phone awesome.
heres a good first step for you though
flash a custom recovery, then flash a custom rom.

Rooting your phone wont change the way it looks... you just have root access, that gives you the ability to change any thing you want... like the way it looks.

Now you want it to look different ?
Now you get to decide how you want it to look and operate. Your going to be the one doing this so you got some more work ahead of you... so you best get at it.( You actually didn't think it would be magically different by just rooting it did you ? ) That my friend is just the first step of the actual process..Now...go look at all of the different custom roms built for it and all of the different custom themes available..then... once you have a good idea of what you would like on your phone..start reading all you can about the rom & theme of your choice.Start at the beginning of the threads and read everything there..all of the issues and all the problems folks may have had and how they got fixed. This will save you a-lot of grief once your actually ready to make the switch.
I have found there are plenty of good folks here that will help you once you make up your mind of what you want to do to your phone..
Good Luck...& Good Reading to ya

gb theme

I have composed a gb theme for the notification bar, lockscreen, and green glow overscroll. You will need to overwrite your frameworkres and system ui. This is highly dangerous as we have no sbf. If i have enough interest, i will post it.
very interested
I'm cloning the Cyanbreak.apk repo in preperation for a port once this bootloader deal gets figured out.
@suzook, if you want help with porting your images over into apks for theme chooser let me know, it's the first thing I learned to do in git.
I'm very much interested. This blue isn't doing it for me. I want my black notification bar and green.

Dude lets do it that's the hole reason I'm ready to get some custom roms . To be able to change up the apperance .but we have no hope right now to do that without the bootloader unlocked or hacked right

Hell yeah I'm interested. Can't wait to get rid of all this blue, lol.

I would love to also ditch this blue bar. Count me in.
I will try and upload tonight. I have been insanely busy at work. I take no responsibility for bricks. This is risky, but i have successfully done this on 4different droids. U can use rootexplorer to over write, or adb push them.

i don't want to scare anyone, but apparently someone who used jewremy's mods to use rootexplorer to overwrite systemui.apk and framework-res.apk bricked their d3, or softbricked anyways. systemui.apk constantly force close bootlooped, and when pulling the battery and restarting he was in bootloop?
check the thread post here

That comment was kinda fresh when Jewremy posted his mods. He suggested after that comment not to use Root Explorer to do his mod. There is now a safer method with his V2 version of Modkit. So much easier. No way to get bricked.
Interested
I need some of that gingerbread black and green, i can't stand all this blue.

(Q) How to install/flash kernel?

So with the kernel released, anyone want to educate us how to flash a kernel? Id like to dig into this kernel, and if I can do anything with it, id like to know how to flash it to test...
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA Premium App
it should be the same as on any other phone. boot into ClockWork Recovery and select "install .zip from sd card"(or you could specify in ROM Manager that you want to do that also.
No, its not the same as any other phone...you can't install a custom kernel on the Bionic because it can only run a signed boot image...ala the locked bootloader.
The release of the kernel source, while welcome, is not anything that end users can do anything with at all and is of limited use to developers as well, due to the fact that Moto doesn't release everything and custom kernels are not possible.

Well, you're wrong.
It the phone was unlocked, that is where you'd flash the kernel - through recovery.
well, the procedure of installing a kernal is the same as a ROM(meaning you don't have to go through BootLoader)... so as far as installing, the above is how you'd do it... but wether or not(not) your phone accepts it is a different story considering the current status of the Bionic.
Hmm, wonder if any one is willing to try... If u have then knowledge to put that in a flashsble zip, il try... what's the worst that could happen.... Have soft brick and rds back to life....???

Jeez. The kernel source was barely released a day or two ago. Give the dev community a few days to sort out what they can do with it before getting all crazy about it. We already have ClockworkMod Recovery for the Bionic. Chances are, since they have the full source code, we'll have refined flashable kernels that are bootloader-compliant in the coming weeks.

I am hoping this is the case as well.
Not sure if the entire source was released or just what was contractually obligated to under the GPL.(which is likely the case since everything would give the dev's the key to the kingdom so to speak.)

Well...since we are being sticklers for the facts here...the easiest and most efficient way to load a custom kernel, if we could do so, would be fastboot.
They are typically released for most devices with unlocked bootloaders in update.zip format, but it's really device dependent and several forms are often available.
