Remap Search Button's Long Press - Fascinate Themes and Apps

I find the search key pretty useless on this device so I thought I'd share this app
Button Shortcut
http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?...com.socialnmobile.buttonshortcuts?install=web
If you still want the search functionality try this app also avalible in the market
Google Gesture
-it allows you to search by drawing with your finger, pretty neat.

Other suggestions on what to assign it to do:
- camera (obviously)
- flashlight
- Browser
hope this helps anyone out.

The useless "Search" soft key.

Any apps to make it open something else?
Thanks.
there are plenty
quicksettings
quickdesk
handcent sms
are a few off the top of my head
i used to have a bunch more, but i have since uninstalled after trying nearly all the apps i want to try
(these will allow you to launch them by long press. i dont know if you can replace the short press)
Pretty sure short press is not easily changed. With froyo though longpress opens Google voice commands.

Nice.
Thank you.
id be interested in a kernel or rom that would allow this to be changed. long press on menu opens search so why a seperate key that can be usefull as something else? can any of those apps change the short press? ive only seen long press on search and on home.
I use visual task switcher and assigned the long press of the search key to bring up a list of currently running apps. Pretty handy.
I installed "screen lock" and assigned it to screen lock to take some stress off the power button.
I don't remember where, but I found a post somewhere on how to change it, short press on mine opens camera.
Button Shortcut in the market.

wow, this is an old thread, for those interested dragon remaps the key as camera launch.
can be done in button remapper. also touch jestures can be mapped as keys in galay tuner.
for people who want to get custom and dont see the otions they want in button remapper, i think the key table is in /system/usr/keylayout/s3c-keypad.kl
this is good for fixing i9000 roms (partially) when no kernel is available for those who want to try samsung gingerbread
I like the long press for google voice search. Thanks for the idea.
If you end up flashing a ROM, CM7 has a way to change the search key in the settings menu
I took a look at the system/usr/keylayout/s3c-keypad.kl file but I'm having trouble figuring it out. Anyone know how to get more info on it? Would love to map QuickDesk to it

OK.. I have the issue, seems quite random with the Search button. Am wondering if it is related to moisture from my palm (right-handed)... not sure. Will have to try the rice trick.
Have also taken a look at the remapping option, but don't seem to have write permissions to any of the files, much less, what values to place in the file(s).
Any assistance would be appreciated on teh edit option.
BTW: Captivate with CM7.1 (and a functional GPS after a number of patch/fixes applied)
cm7 has this option.

[Q] Dedicated camera button?

A double tap on the home button currently launches the voice search application.
I never use this application (don't need, and it drains the battery FAST). Is there any way to re-map that action to launch the camera?
TIA
What ROM are you on ?
to disable the voice search..since u dont need that. disable/remove the voice search application.. and for the camera... there are some roms which give an option for dedicated camera keys .. search n u'll find

[Q] Open camera with hardweare button

Is it possible to set hardware button (or combination of buttons) to lunch camera application? I would like to be able to take a picture without use of touch screen. I tried camera zoom FX in which you can set volume button for shutter. To lunch application I have used S-voice, but it is very unreliable and requires internet connection. So I’m looking for other ideas.
Try another apps and if not I think we need a new kernel with this feature

No custom kernel needed
You could re-assign the S-Voice double home press through some framework editing. Of course you need some dev skill as it won't be easy!
I will post you some links asap!
EDIT: I'm quite sure that you can do this by editing android.policy.jar.
Decompile it using apktool and take a look at com\android\internal\policy\impl\PhoneWindowManager.smali, lines 3896 to 3922 define the double home press behaviour This is the best I can do, I hope you'll find it useful ^^
The easy way: you can always try to search on the play store and assign a custom gesture/key the camera launch activity

Thank you for your answer. I'm not familiar with apktool, so I did some more search on the play store and I found an application Home2 Shortcut. With this app you can reassign double click of menu key to start any application. Now with double click of menu button I lunch the Camera zoom FX and with volume button I take a picture. Now I'm able to take a picture with my winter biking gloves on.

Any easy way to set Google Voice to power button double tap?

I use Google Voice all the time and it sure would be nice to have it at my finger tips instead of digging in my apps, everytime I want to use it. Is there a simple remap app?

In the settings for Gear Manager you can choose the app that is assigned to the double press shortcut. If you're on null rom you'll need to revert the home button remapping so instead of a lock button it is a home button again. You can't manually sleep the screen when you do this however. To get around that I put GMD gesture control on the watch to add a swipe in gesture to the right side to sleep the watch (also have a swipe in from left for back and swipe from bottom for home). If you've added any apps to the watch after setting it up they won't show in Gear Manager. To get them to show up in GM you need to delete the file /data/data/com.samsung.android.app.watchmanager/files/wapplist.xml and reboot your phone. Personally I used tasker on my watch for music controls. I then export those tasks as apps and delete that file so they show up in GM. I also installed the regular version of Gravity Box so I could map long press of the button to another app. Hope that points you in the right direction.

Note that there is a feature in GravityBox under status bar tweaks where you can enable sleep on double tap of the status bar. I use this, and it works great!
That way, you can avoid using more precious storage space for an app (like GMD) to provide the same function.

I like having the swipe up go to a specific home screen with my clock on it via a tasker task exported to an app.

[Q] how to re-route Recent Apps hardkey to become the 'Search' hardkey

Hey all,
I'm coming from 2 previous Androids that had the 'Search' hardkey on the phone. I really liked it, esp when used in context in certain apps like Spotify (to filter in Spotify, seems like I have to scroll up 700 songs in my Playlist until the Filter area shows up instead of just pressing the Search key like how i did be4).
Is there any way that I can get rid of the 'Recent Apps' hardkey, and reroute it to 'Search'/Filter.
I see Turbo isn't rooted yet, so guessing I'd need a non-root app solution?
I think I tried one app 'All in One Gestures', and tried to re-route single or long tap on the 'Recent Apps' key to instead 'Search', but that didn't work way I expected it to (it only goes to the Google Now Search webpage, and not the context of pressing Search within an app [and not leaving the app]).
Any ideas?,
Arian
Thanks in advance
Almost positive this cant be done without root.
Darn, I'd also settle for an app that does gestures... so a gesture that triggers what the non-existent Search hardkey would have done. Not sure if thats possible without root.
I miss the search button too
I used to have the Evo 4G and loved the search button too. I was disappointed when (I believe) ICS phased it out and switched to the three button approach. While it won't search within apps, you can launch Google Now from anywhere by swiping up from the home button. In my experience, it's pretty finicky with the Turbo's capacitive buttons though.
Swipe Home Button
There's an app Called Swipe Home Button. It lets you do gestures to activate certain features. OP should look into it, it may be what you're looking for.
If you long press the home button, you'll get the Google search swiping up... Or what I use is nova launcher and a double tap gesture to search.
Hope this helps.
