I downloaded a bootanimation from the Android themes forum, placed it in my /system/media folder (correctly named, too), reboot my phone, and somehow managed to get a bootanimation that I had never seen before. It's the the text Android logo. Since that's not the Cog boot animation I had before, the default samsung one, or the one I downloaded, I'm wondering how the heck did this happen, and how to get the one I want.
Any ideas?
EDIT: After a softbrick, then Odin, then back to Cog, it worked. MIRACLES!
//Oh, and this can be closed, if possible.
The android txt is the true default that will run if you fubar the install.
Also need to make sure the zip has no compression our it won't work either.
And last but not least make sure your putting the zip in the correct location /system/media
On Cognitions latest and greatest. Don't ask what version DG pumps em' out to fast!

I have the stock bootanimation.zip. I'll upload the file when I get off work. Just drop it into system/media/ named as bootanimation.zip. As far as the boot sound goes, nobody to my knowledge has had any luck with that. Everything I have tried to restore custom/stock bootsounds has failed.
Thank you very much!

Minor difficulties. The bootanimation.zip file I have for the true stock animation is corrupted and I'm not having any luck fixing it.
I've attached two alternatives though. The first file is the SGS bootanimation that has been optimized for a smaller screen. It works fine, but it is smaller than it would normally be.
The other is a modded version with a BIOS boot intro followed by the SGS boot animation (full sized). In my opinion, its pretty freakin sweet. Credit to specialex and LitePro. This one is their work, not mine.
Either way, download, rename to bootanimation.zip and drop it into system/media folder using root explorer or a comparible file manager app.
Thanks man. The BIOS style one looks sick. It seems that you can restore a bootsound through SGSTools, but when I set a random .ogg notification sound as the shut down sound, it played it in a never ending loop. I'll try and tinker with it some.

Yea, I had no luck working with SGS Tools and the boot/shutdown sound changer. It works great on stock 2.1 w/ root (I tested it the last time I flashed back to stock- rocking the "droid" voice on boot for a while).
Unfortunately, it never worked for me on custom roms. Even tried .mp3 and .oog files instead of .wav just for the hell of it. I think the issue has to do with the playlogos1 file that the devs modify to kill the default shutdown/startup sounds. I'm going to try SGST again though... its been a while and that app has been updated 4 or 5 times since I last tried.
Well, I found the shutdown.ogg file from the JH7 OTA .zip file and yes, it did work through SGSTools! If I find the original boot animation in one of these folders it'll be back to stock appearence Now whether or not I want to do that is the question hehehe....
EDIT: Turns out only the shutdown sound was working. Im doing a Rom Manager backup now, but my plan is too remove the bootanimation.zip file and restore the factory playlogos and playlogos1 files back to system/bin and see what happens.
EDIT 2: Well that didn't work... I found two other files called bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg and seeing if those work.
EDIT 3: No luck there either. I wonder if it is possible at all to restore the boot animation and sound, and what the developers did to remove it. Its very interesting...
Here's a copy of the stock bootanimation.zip. Credit to whoever I got this from. Personally I like the BIOS one
First things first i have a rooted Samsung Continuum, And i want to change my boot screen and since i dont have a recovery option right now i cant flash anything.
So i have to place the boot animation zip on the phone, Well heres the problem i cant find where im suppose to place the file?? Any help would be great.

You should ask this in the correct area for your phone. I have no knowledge of any other phones but Magic.
Still, see if this helps. When I change my boot animation I put it to system/media/bootanimation.zip.
Why can't you get to recovery?
I checked there i couldnt find anything.
There is no recovery for my phone yet.
Yeah ill ask in the correct forums.
It's either /system/media, /system/customize/resource or /data/local, or more than one of them.
1st off I love how you bump your own thread lol.
2nd, If you phone is rooted install 'root explorer' or simular and search for bootanimation.zip, this will show you where your current animation is stored.
3rd. Remember the directory & copy the bootanimation.zip you want into that folder & overwrite, reboot.
4th. Hope that helps, enjoy !
Try to push it to /data/local/ with adb.
For those wanting to change the boot animation on your Thunderbolt, here is a quick tutorial. Remember that you do this at your own risk- I take no responsibility. It is fairly simple though.
1. Download your preferred bootanimation and place on the root of your sd card.
2. Rename to "bootanimation.zip" (without the quotes of course)
3. use root explorer and navigate to the /system/media folder OR /system/customize/resource folder for VirusROM (I think)
4. rename the "bootanimation.zip" to "bootanimation.zip.old" and "Finalthunder.mp3" to "Finalthunder.mp3.old"
5. Next navigate to your sdcard, and find the bootanimation.zip file that you downloaded and renamed.
6. long press and choose copy
7. now navigate to the /system/media folder on your phone and toggle to mount R/W
8. Then just paste the bootanimation and done!
9. Reboot to check out your new boot animation
I will be trying to reach out to several devs who have made boot animations and see if they will let me post a link to them here so we can have a centralized place to get anims from. Will update as soon as I start hearing back from those devs.
How do you change the boot sound?
I was able to change this right after root by using the same methods as I used on my DINC. But I want to replace the boot sound as well. I have tried renaiming to thunderfinal.mp3, android_audio.mp3, and (VZW_) something .mp3 to no avail. Any suggestions or success?

rename it to:
thunderfinal.mp3.old
and it "should" work. at least it worked for me. if you change the bootanimation, just add ".old" after .zip
FYI - I don't think that is the correct location - at least it's not on my Thunderbolt. Check here: /system/customize/resource and find the VZW_bootanimation.zip.
I replaced that with one of my choice and it's working fine. The sound is there as well: FinalThunder.mp3.

It depends what rom you are using. The debloated rom has those files placed in media. I am running the debloated rom now.
Where can I download other boot animations?
In xda there are a ton of boot animations. Just use the search. I put "boot animation" in the search tab and got a ton of results.

If you are running Debloat then its in the /system/media folder.

The stock rom is:
/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip
Same as EVO not DINC, DINC called it VZW_bootanimation.zip
I've been working on a few of my own boot animations. The problem I found is that when I dropped in my own boot animation and left the finalthunder.mp3 right where it was. It no longer played the thunder sound?? I assumed that changing the name of finalthunder would make it go away otherwise it would play no matter what.
So why did it stop playing when I didn't touch it?
**EDIT
Duplicate post. Sorry!
Maybe the sound is tied to the original boot animation through a script or other file...not really sure. I am going to play around with it this week and see if I can get the sound working as I have a couple ideas myself. If I find something that works I will be sure to post back and let you know.

changing Stock animation
I'd like to know as well. I can't see anywhere in the VZW_bootanimation.zip where that file is even referenced...
Of course, I'm not exactly a scholar in this area. I just want to use a custom sound with my custom boot ani.
Thanks!

*UPDATE*
I extracted all the stock folders from the zip, I changed 1 PNG (the quietly brilliant splash in the 'android' folder), rezipped it and put it back on the bolt. When I rebooted the screen was blank BUT the finalthunder.mp3 STILL played... and there was no animation.
I kept the PNG file name that I changed the same as the original... not sure why it stopped working tho. {Note - I rename the zip (attached) after I have it on my SD card. then move it to the system/customize/resource.}
hey guys, having some problems making mine
i was able to make everything but i get no image. I made 120 jpg files for the VZW folder and placed them in their.
I then customized the HTC screenie for the android folder, and finally in the progress folder i placed a .gif (which i didn't think was a problem).
I also placed the desc.txt file as well, zipped it up and placed in in /system/media. No dice...
Anyone else having an issue or has had this issue and knows what i need to do??
edited because
Anybody got any cool boot animations running on their Tbolts yet?
Awesome this worked great. Thinks for the instructions.
okay, i need some assistance, I'm trying to make a fairly simple boot animation, but NONE of the animations ive used have worked I am obviously not doing something right, but not sure what
I can't get this to work either... I'm running DaBamf ROM and put these files in the system/media folder to replace what was there and all I get is a black screen and no sound at all... I haven't messed with the stock location of these files yet, so we'll see...
Ok this is a weird solution but it has worked for me.
1. down load the link below and flash it. When it boots up you will get the famous rick roll bootanimation that jcase put up on April 1st.
2. Go to /system/media/ and replace the bootanimation.zip with whatever bootanimation.zip you want.
3. If you want to add custom boot sound you have to name it android_audio.mp3 to replace what is there. If you don't want any sound delete the existing android_audio.mp3 or you will get Rick Astley every time you boot.
That has allowed me to change bootanimation and get custom sound each time I have replaced the ROM. If that works for you thank me and enjoy.
Hi all,
I have a CDMA Hero and was trying to get this boot animation working:
The Event Android boot animation by zul8er:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092177
I installed it but get a black screen when the device is booting up. I am running Cyanogen Mod 7 and the animation that came with it worked fine. If you guys could help me out on getting this to work I would appreciate it.
Attached is the animation file that was created by the original author (resized for the Hero):
It is 320X480 and the permissions are set per the link above.
Thanks guys.
You posted this in development, which it is not. I would say read the OP of that thread. I just read it and it says it's 480*800 and if you have a diff screen res (heroC is 320*480) you need to change the desc.txt. Also, depending on what ROM you are running bootanim lives in different folders. Try putting it in data/local
EDIT: just saw you have the 320*480 one.
EDIT2: at least it's not in dev anymore
Yeah, I posted it to the wrong forum. My fault. Thanks mods for correcting that.
did you flash out, or move it yourself? I see a flashable version and one that is installed manually.

I tried the flashable version but Recovery game me an error, so the creator of the animation made me a non flashable one. I moved it with root explorer and set the permissions correctly per the creator's instructions.

What rom are you on? Cm7 stable?
If so, it should go into /system/media. I don't know about having to set permissions, I never had to do that to get a boot animation working....

That zip in the op is no good. Something wrong with it, all I got was a black screen. I wonder if something got twisted when it was resized.

Yeah, I got a black screen. That is the problem. I didn't resize it. The op did. I know not to unzip it and I did put it in /system/media.
laie1472, Ill send you a pm with one of his original ones. Maybe you can get it working for the Hero.
Thanks a lot guys.

Here's a thread for how-to make your own
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096068
I have tried putting bootanimation.zip in /system/media and /data/local and neither method works for me. I get a black screen instead of the boot animation. I've tried changing the animation multiple times with a few different versions of AOSP and CM7. I've even tried to find the stock bootanimation.zip in /system/media from a newly flashed ROM before adding a new one, and I cannot ever seem to see that file, either.
I keep reading threads with instructions to put the bootanimation.zip in either location with Root Explorer or through Terminal Emulator, with /data/local being preferred), and I keep doing exactly the same steps, but I seem to have no success. I've tried various boot animations from this section of the forums, I've edited the desc.txt file to make sure things are the correct size, etc. I managed to get the Pac Man boot animation to run once (placed in /data/local), edited the desc.txt to have the animation loop, and got the black screen after that. I have not gotten any boot animation to work since then (other than the stock CM7 and AOSP animations for the ROM I'm using). I've even tried using bootanimationutility.apk, but it also cannot find any bootanimation.zip when run it, so it won't change anything for me.
I've brought my Hero back to stock since then, and have flashed Evolvr (I love it, but no Music prevents it from being ROM of choice), CM 7.0.3, and AOSP 5/23. I'm still getting the same results. I wipe everything make sure I start clean, and I still can't change my boot animation.
I've got just enough familiarity with working on this phone to get myself into trouble if I'm not thinking, and barely enough patience to keep myself from running into that problem sometimes. Can anyone help me figure this out? I know my Hero might be getting a little long in the tooth, but I'm getting married in the fall, and my money is a bit tied up in that for a while, so no new Evo 3D for me just yet.
Are you trying to get a boot animation you made to work or just a boot zip period to work??
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
any boot animation at all.
EDIT: hmmm... now I just got the broken glass boot animation from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096068) to work correctly from /data/local. Maybe my luck has changed.
I guess this is what I get for deciding to stop lurking and start learning.
Another update. I tried to change some of the previous boot animation to have the droid pulse instead of just remain lit. I added the duplicate png files, renamed them in order, and made a new zip. I'm back to a black screen. I'm guessing there's something that I messed up when I created the new zip file. I was able to switch back to the unmodified version, and it worked just fine. Anyone got any tips for editing other non-flashable .zip's? I've got a few that I'd like to try out and tweak a little, but I can't ever get them to properly load when I put them in /data/local, just like what happened here.
It's nice to know people will try to help instead of just ignoring those of us who don't know a ton about all of this.

When you zip up your boot animations you have to zip them with no compression. You have to select add to archive and store (using 7 zip). After you zip your folder, you have to go back into it (open archive) and make sure you don't have any thumbs.db files that got added when you zipped up the folder. With CM7 / Aosp roms your bootanimation.zip should go in /system/media. I struggled with this for a couple of days before I got everything working smoothly. Good luck.

Yeah I saw Duce's post earlier. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure it's true.
2011 Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins!!!
Ok so im stuck.
I've tried everything to install a different boot animation on my T-Mobile Note 4.
I tried downloading a file that was titled "CWM_CustomBootanimation_44_Enable.zip"
then going into an XDA thread that had a bunch of "bootanimation.zip"'s and choosing the one I liked.
Downloaded and placed it in my system/media/ folder.
Gave it the right permisions.
But nothing happened... I rebooted the phone and now all i had was just the stock samsung note 4 boot-up, but oddly i was now missing the T-mobile one that would show up right after, although the T-Mo jingle remained.
I kept searching and then found the strategy of just replacing the "bootsamsung.qmg" and "bootsamsungloop.qmg" files.
I found another boot animation i liked with .qmg format.
It came in zip folder and i extracted the 2 files, copied them over and named them like the original files (also adding an "_old" to the titles of the originals incase i ever needed them again)
Gave them the right permissions
Rebooted
And same thing again... just the stock black note 4 screen
At this point i decided to try another .qmg file, but this time for the shutdown animation...
Did pretty much the same run around...
and it worked! so the shut down animation was changed without a hitch.
I went back to the media folder and realized there were other boot files such as "bootsamsungmini.qmg", "bootsamsungminiloop.qmg", "bootsamsungmini2.qmg" and "bootsamsungmini2loop.qmg"
so i tried switching all of them to the 2 .qmg files i originally downloaded, with the right permissions, but nothing... still same stock black boot up.
So now, like i said, I'm stuck...
Should i have just put the whole zip file in the media folder? there were two folders in that zip. One was system/media with the two new boot animations and the other was META-INF/com/google/android/ with two files "update-binary" and "updater-script". Not sure if i have to do anything with these files.
Ive also heard theres an app on the market called Boot Animation but it has lots of mixed reviews, dont feel like going through the hassle of possibly bricking my device now.
And ive never been a custom rom kinda guy so i dont want to switch roms just for a boot animaion.
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Anyone?
Most system/media files contain a bootanimation.zip folder. Make sure you delete it or when you put in the new qmg the system will boot from the zip file before the extracted qmgs
