I got a G1 the other day, and for some reason the home button doesn't work. I've tried restoring the phone, and taking the battery out, and etc. but the home button still doesn't work. Now for some reason my internet isn't working on the G1 so I can't pass through the G1 activation screen. I'm have the web2go internet plan. I have my apn set up as internet2.voicestream.com and I got another one internet3.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com none of them worked on my G1, there's also no wifi option on it, but everything functions perfectly on my Nexus one. Can anybody help me figure this out? I also tried to install drivers, but Windows says that the drivers I have are already the best ones, it still comes up as an unknown device.
So to sum it up, I need help bypassing the activation screen, and getting the web2go to work.
You can always try this method to sign into the Google account via WiFi. This involves setting up ADB on your computer and using commands to access your phone's Settings screen, and then turning on wifi on your phone to connect. If you want to try this method, make sure you're on a stock Android RC29, or else it won't work. To check if you're on RC29, go to your phone and type <enter>reboot<enter>, if your phone reboots, you're on RC29.
<enter> is where you should press the enter key on your keyboard.

I tried the method above, but my phone doesn't reboot. I think I'm probably on RC30. This phone has 1.5 on it.
Download this and put it on the root of your SD card, make sure it's named as DREAIMG.nbh exactly, case sensitive. Go to your phone and hold down the Camera and Power button to enter bootloader mode. Flash the file and restart your phone, you'll be on RC29 now.

Thanks I'll try it out.
Alright, that worked great, but I want to root it too now. Like I mentioned my home button is broken, so I can't boot into recovery by holding Home+End, I tried adb shell reboot recovery but I get something like "Operation denied"
I think that command needs root access to fuction.
Just follow the rooting tutorial.

Thanks for all your guy's help. I was wondering is it not possible to use the internet2.voicestream.com apn on the G1?
I wouldn't know. Go to the APN settings and click the Menu button and then select "Set to default", should automatically choose the correct APN for you.

Keyfix
Hi, you can spray isopropyl Alcohol (the one that does not contain water, find it very cheap on electronic shops) all over the button and press it repeatedly (without battery) and wait a couple of hours, some buttons on my keyboard didn't work and after this they're working fine

Download this file RC30 or this one for RC8, extracted all the files to the root of the SD Card. Shut down the phone and turn it on holding the power and camera button. Follow the instructions on the phone to downgrade to RC29/RC7. Once you're on RC29/RC7 it's time to install the test keys.
Reboot the phone, When it has finished booting hit enter twice and type the following at the home screen. It will start searching your contacts, but don't worry about that. Also, you won't see any visible sign that the first command worked. Just go ahead and type the second command straight afterwards:
Code:
cd sdcard<press enter>
sh install<press enter>
After a moment your phone should reboot itself.
switch off the phone again and then hold down the home key while you switch it on. Keep the home key held down until you see the recovery screen (with the "!" triangle and the picture of the phone). Then press Alt+L on the keyboard and if you see "Using test keys" on the second line of text then the modified recovery image is installed and you can now install the modified firmware by hitting Alt-S. You should now be on JF 1.41 RC30/RC8. Enjoy...
*Optional but highly recommended*
To install the modified bootloader rename Hard_SPL_update.zip to update.zip and switch the phone off and then hold down the home key while you switch it on again. Keep the home key held down until you see the new recovery menu, hit Alt-S to apply the new bootloader. Congrats you now have the modified bootloader with the skating androids.
You can only see the skating androids when you power up holding the Power and Camera buttons, it replaces the multicolor recovery bootloader. The boot loader allows you to use fastboot in recovery mode. Once you've done with the files on the SD card they can be discarded.
For those of you that don't have a data plan you can check out this post here written by JF himself explaining how to register without a dataplan or sim card. I also recommend you download the ADP1.1 version here as you can reset your phone when ever you want and still sign back in on the phone bypassing the google activation. Keep in mind that the following is NOT included in the ADP1.1 version, myfavs app, all IM's except google talk and t-mobile ringtones.
To install, copy it over to your SD card and rename it to update.zip, reboot your phone and and hold the home button while turning it on. Use Alt-S to install like you did with RC30/RC8.
The download in this thread contains all the files need to successfully root your phone. Use RC30 if you're from the US or RC8 if from
the UK.
At this point you can install any "Roms" to your liking, from post 1.
So you may be asking yourself why should I root my phone, what does rooting do? Well, rooting your phone allows you to have administrator access to your phone and thus due thing not normally possible on standard android. With it you can have all your apps and caches run from your SD card, apply themes, tether your phone, enable auto rotation and the list goes on. Here's a few links of interest to help you get the most out of your rooted phone.
This post has a script for moving the apps and caches to your SD card.
You can find many Themes here including my Macdroid theme.
To enable auto rotation, open Browser, click menu then down to settings.

The firmwares are region specific. RC30 would be US and RC8/9 would be UK. Unless you create and use a goldcard, I don't suppose you could flash a US or UK firmware to your Singapore phone.

I'm having the same problem! couldn't downgrade that build number. And i couldn't even create a goldcard. Whenever i do what the website says and then i plug it back in into my G1 it just tell me damaged SD card and i'm suppose to reformat it.

your supposed to use the gold card in the spl....
Just received my G1 today. Haven't changed anything, went through first boot, got everything setup to my liking, downloaded a few apps from the market.
Rebooted the phone since it looked like I lost data connectivity, and it's now stuck at the bootloader screen. It doesn't seem that the camera button is stuck, I can push it and feel actually depress. Booted into recovery and did a factory reset/wipe, still no good.
Should I be able to reflash an original ROM image from recovery to get going again? (After I hunt down an SD card)
... how can you be "stuck" at the bootloader if you can already access the recovery?
Couple of things you can try:
1) Reflashing the ROM (since you can access recovery right?)
2) If you're actually stuck in the bootloader and can't get to any other screen, you can try:
Code:
fastboot reboot
3. If that doesn't work, you can try reflashing DREAIMG.nbh (RC29) and starting over.
Yea, it boots right to the bootloader. If I hold power + home it goes into recovery, but that doesn't get me anywhere.
Tried reflashing RC29 via the bootloader. After it's complete, I press the action key to reboot, and it goes right back into the bootloader.
Where am I supposed to enter in "fastboot reboot"?
Is there anything I should try updating at the recovery screen via SD card?
if you just got the G1 recently and you haven't installed any custom software on it and you're already having theese issues why not just exchange it for one that actually works instead of going through the headache of trying to fix it? Especially if the software hasn't been modified and you keep getting thrown into the bootloader
That'll be the next step. I didn't buy it locally tho, through the web, so I'd like to see what I can do before I go that route.
if you use the rc29 DREAIMG.nbh it writes over everything, so if your phone still dosn't load you may have a more serious problem, exchange may be your best bet
I've sent an email to the vendor I bought it from about exchanging it.
I've noticed that when booting into recovery, after pressing alt - L, the top of the screen says :
Android system recovery utility
E:Can't open /cache/recoverfy/command
Then it lists out the Alt commands.
possibly try downloading the DREAIMG.nbh file again, format your sdcard to fat32 once more, let your phone boot into the bootloader and apply the update and cross your fingers and pray to wich ever god you believe in
I've left the battery out all night. I was in the process of formatting the sd at the computer again, and tried powering on the G1. Holy crap it boots up!
Now I'm back to the problem of no data services. I can surf the web all I want on the dash, I know I have a data plan. I'll have to give t-mo a call I guess, since I can't get the G1 registered now.

ya i would call t mobile .they would prob replace for ya sounds like some thing weird going on!good luck
Ok, definently sending this back. It has stopped working again. I'd turn it off from the menu, swap out the SIM, and when I go to turn it back on, it'll boot to bootloader again. Reflashed later today for kicks, booted bootloader 1st time, booted up correctly the 2nd time (but didn't have SIM in), booted a 3rd time with SIM in to try to activate, but it went to bootloader again. Any subsequent boots are all to bootloader.
I'm thinking it's crappy hardware.
Still intermittent booting. Until I get the goahead to send it back for an exchange, what else do we think I should try. Could it be the radio version? I tried to update with an HTC radio, but the signature didn't let it load. What, if any, radio downloads will work with a stock G1?
I'll try a few more things tonight, and post up what happens. Maybe check out tmobile's downloads for firmware updates.
If I didn't buy the phone directly from t-mobile, would they be able to do anything for me if I take it in to a store?

No they won't. Your best bet is to contact HTC cause the phone is still under warranty, but you better contact them soon cause the phone is about to be a year old on Oct. 20th I believe.
I'll try that then, since all I got for a response from the seller was "has the issue been resolved yet?" I'll check with HTC today about the manuf. warranty.
Hi guys,
UK G1 (Dream) phone recently updated to the 1.6 build, all working fine.
Yesterday I tried installing the free app Shop Savvy. the phone resetted itself after install and sat on the G1 boot screen permanently.
Now phone will pass this boot screen (Tmobile G1)
Tried:
Recovery mode - will not work at all
Quick boot - brings up the multicolour screen but does nothing after.
**PHONE IS NOT ROOTED**
looks like I have had the phone JUST over a year, not looking good...
Any ideas?
You can boot in to the SPL/bootloader so thankfully you haven't bricked
If you're on a contract with tmo you could take it back to the store and they should give you a replacement, but where's the fun in that?
If you want to fix the problem yourself, all you need to do is downgrade to firmware 1.1, then accept the OTA update to 1.6.
Here's the procedure:
1)Put the phones SD card in to a card reader and format as fat32
2) Extract this file and copy it to your SD card as 'DREAIMG.nbh'
3) Put the card back in the phone and hold down power and camera to boot in to the bootloader.
4) Flash it. (Action button is the trackball).
It's a good idea to leave the charger plugged in and have a decent amount of charge in the battery (eg 40%+).
Afterwards the phone will restart and you will need to re-enter your google account info. All your apps and data will be gone, but there's not much we can do about. You can set things up and install apps while you wait for the prompt to update.
Thanks alot AdrianK,
Really appreciate the steps and info, nice one
I have done some flashing on other phones etc so I have no problem with this. However, I am wondering how a normal app such as Shop Savvy could corrupt my ROM and am wondering if it might not be better to get a new phone as this one could have hardware fault?
What do you think?
Silver.
OK,
did exactly as you said Adrian. Phone went through all the flashing routine then, right at the end said press action button to continue (trackball) every time I press the trackball phone returns to the bootloader screen
What now?

Yeah that's the RC7 ROM, the UK ROM for 1.1. RC29 is 1.1 for US phones.
This is all very odd, especially that it was an app that caused it, or as you suggested possible hardward failure. Oh well, I guess all you can do now is take it back to tmo.
Ok so i got this g1 for free. I dont have t-mobile im on att. Im also nostranger to HTC ive been using the Diamond and TYTAN 2 for years now!
So when i first turned the phone on it would boot into android and tell me i needed a t-mobile sim. Well my plan was to get an unlock code and use the phone with ATT. Anyways for some reason i turned the phone on and and it started booting to the triangle screen... Id treid alt l then wiped the phone and reverted back to stock settings but it still boots to the triangle screen. I have no idea why the phone just started doing this. I also have no idea the history of the phone if its ever been rooted or anything. I need to get this phone working again so i can attempt to unlock it.
I tried to follow the unroot article to get back to stock but when i put the spl on an sd card named update.zip it wouldnt install it says no signiture found verification failed. I also downloaded rc29 and renamed it to update tried to install but that failed with a diffrent error.
Im not sure why im going straight to the triangle screen like i said i never screwed with the phone at all i just turned it on and it started doing that. Im turning the phone on by taping the end call button.
I know you said you tried to follow the steps to root the phone but it sounds like you didn't do it the correct way.
If you have the RC29.zip you need to unzip it and move the Dream.nbh file over to the root of your SD card. Then press and hold the camera button while powering on the phone. It will go to a gray screen where it SHOULD say "Press power to install update" you do that....DO NO INTERRUPT THIS PROCESS! and then once that is done you should be back to the very bare bones stock G1. Problem is you need to do more than that to get Root access, and the rest of the steps would require being signed in. There should be a thread on here somewhere about signing in w/o a SIM card which you need to search for and follow.
here is the best root guide if you haven't found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
ya i havent tried the above article yetl i tried to unroot the phone, not root it. Becuase it saidit would revert back to stock settings and im not sure wether the phone has been rooted.
.
I will work through this a little bit later but like i said the phone goes straight to the triangle exclamation point screen where you press alt l or whatever alt combo you want. So there is no way i can tell if its below rc30... Also screwing around earlier i held down the camera button and tapped end call it still went to the same screen with the triangle. Maybe that becuase theres no spl installed? Like i said this phone was working fine and then it just stoped booting into android and started going into this recovery mode or whatever it is, so im not even sure if rooting is what i need to do. As of right now i jst want it to boot up again and tell me no sim card found so i can work from there.
The triangle screen is stock RECOVERY.
You have set the boot recovery flag.
Try pressing home-back when you're in there.

I have been trying to upgrade my htc magic 32a from 1.5 ever since I got it 10 months ago...but no success. One of the reasons I learned in my inquiry is that it is not possible to upgrade a "perfected spl" which is what I have. However, I have found several bloggers who claimed to have done so using ROM Manager, flashrec.apk, ADB, etc. But when I try any of the suggested methods, I eventually reach a failure message (can't be installed on this phone, force stop, etc) of some kind.
So here are my questions:
Was the blogger correct about the "perfected spl"? If I knew that for certain, then I would dismiss the claims of success as bogus, give up the ghost on this phone, and start looking for an upgradeable replacement!
If the answer to the above is no...meaning there is a procedure for upgrading my phone, then I would be forever indebted if someone can point out the way!
Desperate in Buenos Aires,
Laurie
if you use flashrec.apk, you have to enable the option to install application out of market.
Perfected SPL issue
Although I appreciate your input, if you'll read my post, you'll see that I have tried flashrec.apk and I did it correctly allowing non-market applications.
"...ROM Manager, flashrec.apk, ADB, etc. But when I try any of the suggested methods, I eventually reach a failure message (can't be installed on this phone, force stop, etc) of some kind.
My question which I will repeat more clearly is this:
Is it possible to upgrade an HTC Magic 32A with a PERFECTED SPL...and if so, how do I do it?
Laurie
I can tell you I HAVE read posts of people upgrading these phones. even changing the radio and spl on almost bricked ones.
My question to help you from here is :
Do you have a mytouch 1.2 (fender)
If so it says 32A but it is really a 32B board.
I have the fender and I used clockwork recovery, superwipe, and then ezTerry radio and spl update zips.
I suppose I should ask: upgrade 1.5 what?
If you just mean android 1.5
I used clockwork recovery and then put cyanogen 5 on. Easily
I have since put cm6 on and even cm7
All in all. Keep reading I read for days and days, but... Putting a rom on already rooted phone was easy. And very possible
Sent from my Dream/Sapphire using XDA App
Yes: I would like to upgrade from Android 1.5 to whatever!
No: I don't even know what a mytouch 1.2 fender is! When I boot up, the Airtel logo appears followed by "HTC Magic." There's a T-Mobile logo printed on the case above the screen and "With Google" on the back. Here's what it says I have in about phone:
Sapphire PVT (32A) Ship S-On H
Hboot-1.76.0009 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12 (Dec 8, 2009)
Radio: 6.35.08.29
Type: EB11/32A
I cannot or do not know how to use clockwork recovery. In fact, I am not able to boot into recovery...only HBoot which has no options other than to reset or power down.
I have tried to download and install ROM Manager from Market but get an error saying that there is no such apk. When I try to install from the SD card, I am told that the apk is not for this phone. I have also tried to install it from AppBrain Market but repeatedly get an internet error "Please check your connection and try again." My connection is fine and I'm able to download and install a variety of apks...but none that help me change the rom. I am rooted by the way.
Any ideas?
Laurie
Fender means that it has an audio jack.
Have you read the Cyanogenmod wiki quide? First you need to have root access and an unlocked bootloader (hboot). Only after that you can start installing custom ROMs
Looks like you have the same phone as I do, so you should use this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_%2832A%29:_Rooting_%286.35.x_radio%29
It's old but works. After that you can go forward on installing a ROM you like. Also you always have to remember to have correct radio/SPL versions (you'll learn about them with the guide) before installing software. Otherwise it won't boot.
This is what my phone looks like ATM:

Your phone is pure 32A Magic, not fender or mt4g v1.2
Well then, I don't have an audio jack so my HTC Magic is not a Fender. And I have read...but not followed the Cyanogen Wiki because it specified the "HTC Magic (32A) with 3.22.x radio" while my radio is 6.35.08.29.
I did install ADB on my computer and I created a Gold Card both as per the Wiki instructions. However, I gave up on that method after repeatedly getting a "device not recognized" error.
I do have root access but not a clue as to whether hboot is locked or not. How would I determine that?
Sorry I'm being such a dimwit but I am soooooo frustrated with this phone. Maybe I should either just leave well enough (Android 1.5) alone...or find someone who has a clue to replace the guts of the device with a more adaptable OS.
Thanks for trying,
Laurie
No recovery & fastboot fails to install
I just attempted to follow the instructions from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK once again to install the SDK and fastboot on Windows 7 but the installation of fastboot failed. See screenshot attached.
In addition, I seem to have no recovery at all on the device. Booting from Home/Power brings up the Airtel screen where it remains until I remove the battery. Booting from Vol-Down/Power produces Fastboot which offers 4 options as follows:
<Vol Down> HBoot Mode
<Send> Reset Device
<Action> Restart to HBoot
<Menu> Power Down
Choosing <Vol Down> gives me:
<Back> Fastboot Mode
<Send> Simlock
Both <Send> and <Action> restart the device and of course, <Menu> turns it off.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that I cannot proceed with changing the radio or the spl without Fastboot on my computer...and I should not try to proceed without Recovery on the device. So what do I do?
You need to run the installer as admin, and it's safest to run everything as admin since it's the easiest way
The recovery you have is the stock recovery so it won't show anything useful.
I followed this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_(32A):_Rooting_(6.35.x_radio) and it worked perfectly!
I did run the SDK installer as Admin and after a bit of manipulating managed to get fastboot where it is supposed to be. Then I attempted to follow the guide you suggested. However, when I try to "push adb"...I get a "permission denied" message and can go no farther.
So does having the "stock recovery" mean that I cannot enter recovery mode? Hanging up on the Airtel screen is to be expected? Then I truly don't understand. How do I back up my current ROM? And if things go wrong...which they can't because I cannot adb push anything to my SD card...then how do I recover?
I honestly appreciate your help...but I seem to have the device from hell and every time I hear how "easy" it is to do what I have not been able to do in a year, I want to tear my hair out!!!!

I did run the SDK installer as Admin and after a bit of manipulating managed to get fastboot where it is supposed to be. Then I attempted to follow the guide you suggested. However, when I try to "push adb"...I get a "permission denied" message and can go no farther.

Please try to follow the 6.35 instructions
Did you use a goldcard? Check the wiki for that too
You can probably try temproot and then backup with that - but SMS and some other stuff can probaby be backed up in some other ways. If you can't push anything to the sdcard, have you enabled USB debugging from the settings? You can also try to enable USB storage from the usb menu that appears when you connect your phone to your computer and put the files there that way. I can't really remember how I did it since it was such a long time ago :/
Don't worry, it's hard but not impossible!
Yes...I have tried to follow those instruction as well as versions thereof listed below.
And yes...I have created a Gold Card as well as installed SDK, Eclipse, etc...but all to no avail.
When I read "Hey look. I just upgraded my HTC Magic (with the same credentials by the way) to Froyo...in only 10 minutes!" I must come to the conclusion that I am the problem in the sense that there is something that I am not getting. Consequently, my question is this:
Does anyone know of a technical service where I can send my device to have it upgraded professionally?
If it is in the general vicinity of Denver (CO)...that would be cool but at this point I'm willing to mail it. PLEASE HELP! The phone works just fine...but it is sooooooooo limited by Cupcake!

Try Spanish posts
Hmmm.... the science of the magic is a little hard to some few...
Have you tried Spanish tutorials?
There's also an Spanish page (h ttp:/ /htcmania .com) that can help you, because the Magic was first released in Spain
(if you are going for the spanish forums be careful! those use 32b motherboards)
BTW, if you want to upgrade, remember something, you must download 1= the recovery and 2= roms
To install them, you need to use a terminal emulator and all that.... (the forums w/download links also have an installation guide)
I wish you look n.n
and if you need help on how to install or root something... contact me (Y)
Yes...I need help!
Hola Cesar,
Thanks for your suggestions. Since I have the 32A motherboard, I don't want to risk bricking my phone by doing anything meant for the 32B. But I can surely use your help with the following which by the way, I have already tried:
Finding and installing the correct Recovery & ROM. I have been referred to a variety of each but haven't been successful at installing any as you can see from my list...even when following the respective installation guides.
Currently, I'm running a rooted phone with a perfected SPL with no recovery. No problems so far but I would love to upgrade to Froyo if that is possible. Another by the way: I just spoke to an Android specialist at Cricket who said he could do it...but didn't understand why I would want to since I'm not having problems with the phone - if it ain't broke, why fix it?
Laurie
Try to root by SuperOneClick. Even shell root will help in future
If not, i will write more hard manual
I am rooted
Thanks for the suggestion Strogino but I already have root. My problem is not being able to upgrade from Android 1.5.

Sup?
Laurie, The magic of the Magic is a pain!
Let's do this:
Turn of your phone and turn it on by presing back + power
That's the bootloader screen, then tell me what says there
second: Download any root app (like root explorer) and tell me if you can acces the root of your sd (something like / or try to go to /system/data and see if you can COPY an app to the SD). BTW, how did you rooted your phone?
for now, you must decide wich ROM you will use, tell me that and give me the link of the rom (if you want a reco' look for Ginger Yoshi)
That's all for now, do your homework an tell me that ^
Glad to help you!

I have Root Explorer installed and am able to access the SD Card although there's no /system/data folder. I went to system/app instead but can't figure out how to COPY any of the apps listed to the SD Card.
As for the ROM, I don't have a clue which will work on my device. I do have Ginger Yoshi on my PC. What's next?
