I am trying to uninstall the news and weather widget. The uninstall button is greyed out. I want to install the transparent news and weather but it won't overwrite it either. Any ideas?

What phone do you have and is it rooted?
In some phones/ROMS the GenieWidget (News and Weather) is a system application meaning you need root to change it out.
I have the Droid Eris and it's rooted. I am using Nonsensikal 13.2 froyo. I don't know why I can't get it to uninstall so I can install the transparent version of it.
Try pushing the new GenieWidget using ADB.
Code:
adb push GenieWidget.apk system/app/GenieWidget.apk
Or download titanium and use that to uninstall it. Cake and pie.

Rooted Eris here, titanium = profit and enjoy

Trying Titanium...doing the force remove app but it is trying to install something and reboots my phone but the install for whatever it is trying to install fails. I am not familiar with adb. Hmmmm
Uninstall does not work for system apps. Just delete/overwrite it.

So I found a clear Facebook widget, and used root explorer to switch it out in the system/apps folder, matched permissions and rebooted.. worked fine. But now I tried to do the same exact process to the HtcMusic.apk, matched permissions, and it didn't work. Only difference is that the Facebook.apk did NOT have a Facebook.odex file. HtcMusic does. That's the question does the .odex file mess this process up. Can I delete it or replace it, or should I just leave it be? Any help or direction to a thread would be appreciated! Thanks!

What rom are you running? If it's a non sense rom you can't use htc widgets.
The odex and the apk might not have the same owner, so they can't work together. I'm using an odexed rom too, so I've had that problem whenever I try to replace an htc apk using root explorer. Try doing it with adb instead, by doing an adb push (after adb remount).
Yea im using Eris Lightning 3.02 so it is sense. I'm gunna do a nand restore to before i replaced the htcmusic.apk, cause not only does the stock music player not work now, but my keyboard keeps force closing. After that ill try to push it using adb. Thank you guys for the speedy responses!

Hey Guys, I've been trying to remove some apps that never get used. But when i tap manage applications, the Hero tries to load them but then always force closes about 5 seconds later.
Any tips on how to get around this?
I'm running firmware 2.1-update1
Thanks in advance!

I've tried to do it after restarting my phone, before I do anything else and still no luck. Has anyone else had this problem?
Try wipe dalvik. I may have gotten lucky, but it solved almost all of my force closes.
U can also remove through terminal or adb if u know the path

Well time to start reading, I have no idea what you two are talking about. Thanks for the advice though!
What apps are u trying to remove. U can go into an app manager and it will tell u the name then go into terminal and use rm command to remove. Example.
Su (enter)
rm /system/app/alarmclock.apk (enter) and it will remove it. Or download android commander on your PC and remove with that. Easier

Can I do this using an app manager such as Astro?

If you have a rooted handset you can use titanium backup to uninstall apps. Does a fine job of backing them up too of course.
Yes u can. I have Linda file manager. Works fine with apps. And as stated above titanium backup as well (must have app anyway)

Froyo Powered HTC Hero
Not To Familiar With ADB But.... Is Your Phone Rooted First Off? If So Just Install "Root Explorer" From Market.... (1)Then Scroll Down To (2)System.... (3)Apps.... (4)Market.... (5)Click Up Top On Read/Write Button.... (6)Long-Press On Market.... (7)Delete.... (8)To Install The "New Market" You Should Be Able To Just Download A "GAPPS.ZIP" & (9)[Flash It The Same As You Would Any "ROM"].... That's It!! GOOD-LUCK!!

Hi guys, Im trying to get the Google News and Weather app (GenieWidget.APK) from Nexus S, or other newer version, running. I have an older version that does not auto update, so it kinda sucks.
The new version is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13473045
Ive tried dropping both the APK and/or ODEX file via file manager, also rebooting, but the files are not there afterwards. Im rooted and using FileExpert app, which is granted superuser Im told via toast message.
Also tried direct install of the APK, but again no go --> 'Application not installed' error.
Im running the Mosiac III ROM.
Searches have not helped so Id appreciate some help!
You might wan't to try Root Explorer from the market. Its what I used to install the genie widget. It is pretty easy to use. All you have to do is copy it into your system/app folder and there you have it.

but do i need to delete the old one? Is necessary to change the permissions of the new apk? If yes how?
If the installation is failing you are going to need to adb push the application to your system/app/ folder and then it should work... I am also looking for the new geniewidget.apk (sorry for bumping an old thread).
I recently installed WidgetLocker and installed it in my system/app folder as I read it would work best if installed there. But have come to just not like using it and just gone back to the default kindle lock screen and changed the background wallpapers. I can't seem to find a place on the device or apps I use to uninstall it.
And deleting the .apk from the system folder works, but am unsure if everything is removed.
Would I just delete the .apk in the system/app folder then remove any links/shortcuts or is there another, proper, way to do it?

The app manager of a handy program called ROM TOOLBOX can uninstall system files. Just load it, then a long press on the offending "app will reveal menu including uninstall.
Awesome, thank you. Guess I should have this on my device for a while

Just deleting it and rebooting would unninstall a system app just fine ^^ Though maybe the data wont go

Click to collapse
Yeah, that's what I first did and shortcuts and some of the data and its folder still remained, but I uninstalled with ROM Toolbox and it worked out nicely. Got rid of most of what I wanted gone.
