I bought Captivate by paying all the equipment cost because AT&T told me that they will unlock it whenever I will have to go out of US. They did give me the code but it did not work. After 2 days when I called customer care and they said they dont have the code, but when I told them that I was given the unlock code 2 days back they asked me to spell out the code and then they said yes it is the code. I tried the code with the customer care but it did not work. Then I tried the method showed on youtube (generate_codes.bat, sgux.exe) but I get the

if you haven't flashed any ROMs, here is what you can do. go to market then search for SGS unlock, install and run it, it'll give you the code. thats how i unlocked mine. write the both codes down just in case.
No I have done nothing. It is just 6 weeks old phone. Same as what was delivered by AT&T. I did not play around with anything (like rooting, or installing beta Froyo)

try dial *2767*3855# the phone will hard reset, then try it again. i didnt have any problems unlocking my phone by using SGS unlock, have flashed some stock ROMs in the past few days and didnt have issue at all.
I think the JH7 update screwed up the easy retrieval of the unlock code.

There's some info about a possible work around in there, but the guy who came up with it is apparently French and the translation to English is a little rough.
and to the OP ... my code was all numeric, so not sure why you would have had to 'spell' it to the AT&T rep.

if you have not done anything on it, i'm assuning that you haven't rooted it yet. if thats the case, get z4root from market and root your phone. then use SGS unlock to get code, choose root-code option.
It is possible that your nv_data.bin is encrypted - the only way to know is to root the phone, and view it with a hex editor. If it is encrypted, there is a web tool posted in the dev section (search 2.2 unlock) that will take the nv_data.bin and rebuild it with whatever unlock code you want.
Did you upgrade to Update1 from AT&T? I did software update from phone and it updated the version 2.1 Update1.
I have tried it after doing the upgrade and SGS Unlocker is not working.
What does hard-reset mean? Does it mean "Restor to Factory Defaults"? If yes, I can do it through standard menu entry in settings? Is this different from the method you gave? Will hard-reset reset the 10-maximum-attempts-to-unlock counter?
Thanks for replying!
No. I have not done any ROM flashing.

hard reset = master clear on odin. it wipes out everything on your phone even SDcard. it is different to the standard menu factory rest. and i'm not sure if it'll reset the 10 max counter though.

Since there are only 2 attempts left for me to unlock Captivate, what will happen if I exhaust all 10 tries? I read somewhere that it will hard-lock or freeze. Can this hard-lock be reversed? Is freeze unlock code used to reset the counter?

If it does hard lock? Then you would need to take it to an AT&T shop.
Have you tried CLShortFuse's one-click root program? I haven't tried the Captivate unlock feature - but my guess is it should give you the unlock code.
You can get it here.
I have the same software on my phone as the OP. I got the phone unlocked by using the root method of SGS. Now how did I root the phone? Someone recommended the one click root method found inside the One Click Lag Fix found in the market.
So, to recap. I got the One Click Lag Fix app. Used the one click root method. Got the phone rooted (it is a couple of steps actually - you still have to update on recovery). Now that you have superuser status, used the SGS app to search unlock code using the rooted phone method. It will show the unlock code (mine had 8 numbers). Hope this helps.
PS: For anyone reading this, AT&T DOES NOT have the unlock codes yet. Any rep that promises that you will be getting an unlock code soon is not really telling the whole truth. All it shows on their side is that unlock codes unavailable but it does not shows when they will become available. I think I read somewhere that there is a 10 months exclusivity on the Captivate (starting when it first came to AT&T, which is this last July).

One more time - this is from experience:
If the nv_data.bin file is encrypted and unlock code doesn't work or can't be found you need to rebuild the nv_data.bin file. Period.
There are instructions in the Dev section under a thread titled 2.2 unlock.
If you use all 10 attempts - the phone needs to be sent to a service center to do a low level restore - usually Samsung not AT&T.
Quick question about unlocking a phone. I used the sgs unlock tool and successfully retrieved the unlock/unfreeze codes (and have them saved on my computer) but not sure what to do now. Going to be flashing a new rom on this phone for the first time and I'm not sure if is should grab a t mobile sim card now and try to unlock it. Or will flashing a new rom mess up the unlock so I should use a t mobile sim after the new flash. And if so, will the unlock reset every time I one-click back to stock and flash a new rom? or is the unlock deeper than the roms and will save itself?
Also do I need to backup the NV_data files. I have read a lot and this still seems pretty confusing for me.
BTW this is a friends captivate, I've been flashing mine for months and I need to go through that whole huge process to repair my NV_data stuff to get my codes again. Which is another question I'll have work on later.
Thanks..

Put in your tmo sim card and it will ask you for the unlock code. Enter it and your phone should be unlocked. And once you unlock it it should stay that way.
will give it a shot. thanks.
Hi all,
New owner of a nice Galaxy Ace, i tried yesterday to flash the ROM from stock Froyo to Gingerbread 2.3.4 using Odin 4.38 and SAM dedicated firmware.
All has worked fine... except that when i reboot my phone with SIM card, it is not recognized ! In fact, checking IMEI (*#06#), i have discovered that my phone has lost its IMEI so it can be used anymore for phone services...
I have tried to explore file system (using Root Explorer with root privileges) but i haven't even found /efs folder nor nv_data.bin file on the ACE... Is this normal ? Did i erase the folder when i flashed the ROM (if yes, how ?) ?
Please help me before i send back my phone to my provider...
Regards,
Cedric.
Actually this is one of the things that people are not posting on their update guides, I too am having the same problem. Luckily my phone (which is just 3 days old) is going to be replaced from where I bought it. (I learned my lesson not to mess with my phone) lol! ) Though I hope someone could help with this issue.
Hi,
What is surprizing is the missing /efs folder and imei files on the file system, even .bak ones... and the fact that nobody seems able to explain it or to explain how it should be on the Ace. I wonder if people who have posted flash/root tutorials for the Ace have really proceeded it and if it is not a simple copy/paste from Galaxy S tutorials...
BTW, I brought my Ace this morning to my local provider, it will be sent to repair services. Mine is almost new too (6 days old) so i hope i won't have too many problems with guarantee...

I think most of them probably just copy pasted them tutorials from some other sites and takes credit for em. OH well, people nowadays. I just hope there will be a thorough tutorial/guides that will be posted by veterans/pro's about these stuff. (So we will be well guided).
Thats good, well it hasn't been a week for you. Well my case, it hasn't been 3 days yet thats why they are going to replace the phone.

Dont happen to u doesnt mean it wont happen to anyone else. Btw im also flashed my ace more than 10 times already, and never encounter lost imei problem. But reading this made me realize how critical this matter is. I know that imei on android supposedly were stored in efs folder, but on my ace i couldnt find that folder to backup. Weird...
So anyone can clarify this? Is it true that ace doesnt have efs folder? And if its indeed doesnt have that folder, where does our imei were stored instead?

Don't judge the people from this forum, i have flashed as well with odin plenty of times, and encountered no problem. Flashing really takes risk, we may have similar phones but the situation in which we upgrade them sometimes is the key to the outcome, like what operating system you used, open line or operator locked phones, corrupted files, etc.
By far you were the first i saw that lost their IMEI after flashing. I'm not saying it would not happen again to others, this may be a bug on the upgrade process, but such rarity might be difficult to investigate, but taking the risk is part of the game, don't blame other's if you have failed.
Goodluck on your repair, and hope you have a successful upgrade next time.
I flash my ace couple times. Still have my IMEI.
But want to backup my IMEI, i cant find /efs folder on my ace.
Does anyone, have /efs folder on your ace ?

Ok but why ?... I agree with the fact i have encountered a special case which doesn't affect other people, but i won't do any further flash of my Ace without understanding what has happened.
I have strictly followed the tutorial step by step, using Odin and a multi-package KPE ROM from SAM firmware... i am not the first one who lose his imei on the Ace after a flash, i have found several similar cases on forums. Very strange...
Above all, how are managed EFS files on the ACE ? That's the question, and until now nobody knows or wants to tell it : weird isn't ? If i had known this, maybe i would have been able to restore IMEI myself, it's a very important point.

IMEI is readed from HARDWARE, not from SOFTWARE(SOME FOLDER OR FROM SOME FILE). If it was in folder or somewhere in FILE, then we can change our IMEI.
Its not SOFTWARE base number. Its HARDWARE BASED NUMBER.
YOU CANT CHANGE IT. You must change your hardware, to change your IMEI.
And back to problem: I think that software CANT read your hardware RIGHT or its not SHOWING to you your IMEI(somehow its the software problem).
If you flashing, FIRST be sure that you CLEAR CACHE AND RESET System settings(IF YOU WANT TO BE SURE THAT NOTHING CANT MESS YOU PHONE SOFT).
Maybe this can help too: REMOVE your SIM and SD, before you flashing your phone!

If you want to change your IMEI(like SELL to other ppl phone, then you can sell it, but you CANT change your IMEI).If you phone get DAMAGED and you bring it back to SERVICE(they can change your MOTHERBOARD, LIKE IN PC AND YOU GET almost new phone. Hey Guys
Sorry if this question has been asked before. I've searched all over but not found any solution though.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830V. I previously bricked it and restored stock firmware and now when i turn on my device it says Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830I. The problem with this is that i now wanted to unlock my phone and when i use the Vodafone Unlock Tool (found by searching "vodafone unlock tool") and when i enter the unlock code into the Network Unlock thingy it says "Network Unlock Unsuccessful". I think that the problem is because the unlock tool says its for GT-S5830V and my firmware has changed to GT-S5830I. Please, does anyone know where to find the stock firmware for GT-S5830V or is there a way i can FULLY restore my phone to when i bought it instead of just wiping all the apps off (because all it does it wipes all the apps off and doesn't actually "restore to factory defaults")
Please correct me if my understanding of the problem is wrong and if somehow i can get my hands on another unlock code without paying some weird "unlock your phone here" website.
Thanks in advance

I tried doing the solution on that link and it didn't work. so i clicked on the link that was on that post that said improved method and i got everything right until the hex editing where the hex search didn't work so i couldn't find the code.
Does anyone else have any ideas? I had to pay another $20 on vodafone so i can still call and text so at the moment my new sim is just a waste of money so i desperately need a solution.
Thanks again for your attempt at helping and your quick reply:good:

I followed the method provided and when I entered the reset code into the phone keypad, it said "Mobile Network not Available". I guess I just have to take it to Vodafone to get it unlocked. Will they unlock a rooted phone or will they not accept it? If they wont then i can just unroot it.
Guys I found a confusing solution. While on my way to Vodafone I unrooted my device just in case they didn't allow rooted devices. Once i got there the guy must of thought i did something wrong with the unlock code so he decided to get the unlock code for me. Once he got the unlock code he switched the sim cards to enter the code but strangely we were not prompted to enter the code and the sim just worked. I rooted my device again to see if that was the problem and I was prompted to enter the unlock code so it was so i unrooted it again. But unfortunately nothing seems to go right for me now and now I can only connect to wi-fi if my device is rooted. If i try to connect while unrooted it will attempt to obtain the ip address for a while until it gives up and says the network is disabled. Does anyone happen to know a solution to this problem?
Thank you to everyone who tried to help
Reflash the stock rom with odin and remod it.

Okay everybody,
I decided to write a new thread for my problem because I think my prob is a very special thing.
I'm from germany, so please don't wonder about my english. I think it is a understandable.
The story begins with a software update for my GT-I9305. After the update, the IMEI was just "null", after some work with google I found out that the efs partition was broken. With my bad knowledge for this case, I destroyed the whole EFS folder. I installed perseus kernel. And, there it was! The whole and correct IMEI. The solution was the perseus kernel (stock doesn't work, neither reflash). But then, after a while the phone doesn't boot anymore. I flashed Android 4.4.4 and my phone was revived but the IMEI was again "null". I have no backup or anything else!
So I spent approximately 20 hours or more to understand the efs thing. I found much solutions but nothing worked for me. So, here I am.
What I've tried before
-reflash KitKat
-reflash Perseus (not compatible anymore)
-formatting efs partition for a blank and new EFS for editing
-tried to edit nv_data.bin with HEX
-tried to backup efs with a 3rd party app and edit this with hex (the app doesn't support my GT-I9305)
and then, there it was:
-tried to use a working EFS partition from another GT-I9305
-editing with Qualcomm NV Tools! (I think THIS is the solution!)
I tried NV-items_reader_writer (1.0) and EFS Professional (2.1.73), but in both can't find my phone:
What I've done in NV-items_reader_writer
-dialed *#7284#
-at "Qualcomm USB Settings": "RNDIS + DM + MODEM"
-enabled USB Debugging in phone
-connected the phone
-opened NV-items_reader_writer
-checked the both boxes near the SPC box
-selected the right port (last: COM4)
-clicked on "connect"
-clicked on "read"
-> here it search the phone, but it can't find it and says "Failed.. Phone does not answer"
What I've done in EFS Professional
-dialed *#7284#
-at "Qualcomm USB Settings": "RNDIS + DM + MODEM"
-enabled USB Debugging in phone
-connected the phone
-opened EFS Pro
-clicked on "Qualcomm NV Tools"
-refreshed the Available COM Ports
-selected "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Serial Port" (last COM4)
-clicked on "Connect"
-> Here it takes few seconds and he stops and says: "Phone connection has been lost!" and "Unable to send SPC to the Phone!"
What I've tried to solve this problem
-tried QUALCOMM USB Settings: "DM + MODEM + ADB"
-reinstall all Samsung drivers
-tried to install Samsung Modem with Qualcomm drivers (failed due to wrong platform; I've Win7 X64)
-reinstall Samsung Kies (for actual drivers)
-tried to dial *#9090# (in my case, this menu is totaly blank)
-tried in factory mode
It could be that I forgot some....
Now, my question to you all is, do you know what I've done wrong? I mean, this is working for the most users, but why not for me? What do you think? Did you think I really forgot something?
Some informations:
Phone: GT-I9305
Android: 4.4.4 KitKat
Kernel: Stock (3.0.31-2760029 ; [email protected] #1 ; Fri Sep 12 13:08:24 KST 2014)
Buildnumber: KTU84P.I9305XXUFNI3
Windows: Windows 7 X64
Do you need more informations? Post it!
Please help me, I want to bring this phone back to life!
And yes I know, to change the IMEI to a number which is not your own is ILLEGAL and to prevent this, it is not well seen to talk about, but this is MY PHONE and I want to change the "null" IMEI and IMSI to MY ORIGINAL IMEI. If this is a problem, I can send a PM to an mod with my phone (where you can see the IMEI), my username on a sheet of paper and the original box with the IMEI printed on. All on one picture!
Simply... I need a hero! Be MY HERO!
im in the exact same problem as you. the reason nv tools and efs reader is not seeing your phone is because you have NULL well usb wont work. so try installing the original 4.1.1 firmware, then install perseus, then nv tools and efs software will see your phone. if you end up fixing it please help me out. upgrading to a later firmware is where I get stuck. just stays on the boot logo. and like you said perseus isn't compatible. you seem to know how to use nv tools so hopefully you can get somewhere. as I don't no how to use it. GOOD LUCK.
take your phone to the samsung if you have warranty.otherwise give to a phone repair shop for repair because your problem can only be solved with special boxes and equipments etc, and they have it. it will not cost too much.

I tried this, already. But I can't downgrade from 4.4.4. I don't read very much about this. I just know that this is a new security option from samsung (or Android)... I will tell you when I know more

The warranty is already expired...
This will be the last step I will do. Before this, I will try my very best to do this at home... But thank you for this tip
Edit:
What do you all think about this idea:
-I try to find somebody with a working EFS on GT-I9305 Android 4.4.4
-I get a backup from him
-I restore this backup to my phone
-I edit the duplicated IMEI with NV Tool to my IMEI
This requires that the NV Tool will with work with an existing IMEI and the the phone will be THE WHOLE TIME IN PLANE MODE to prevent IMEI ban...
What do you think? Will this work? Do I need somebody from germany (DBT) or is this not needed?
Take it to a phone repair shop they might have a way to fix it. And if they don't they might know someone who can and it would likely be cheaper than Samsung service center

Identical case (Solved)
Hello partner!
I had the same problem with imei after years of using various roons.
In my case I had a rom lollipop, between a night and other My IMEI is gone. Follow almost the same steps you. After a long time searching the internet was found a case was solved by installing an original rom Samsung via Odin.
Just wiped everything on the recovery and follow this tutorial and today I am with my IMEI back, and well relieved.
I hope it helps you too.

Thank you, I will try this, too. But this is more if your efs isn't mounted. My partition is there but just clear.
I will tell my experience after testing.

Now I tried my idea with the EFS partition from somebody with a working GT-I9305. In my case, this isn't working... I think I must try the next step and try to repair it from a shop or so...
Hello,

If you were to 4.4.4 Official Stock rom can`t do downgrade the bootloader. What you have done is downgrade to Firmware with extracted knox bootloader. But you still with EFS corrupt partition.

Hm okay. I applied a "old bootloader" before here from xda. I don't know what it was exactly. There was a boot.so or so in it.
I will try my best. I mean, if I can beat this, this is a really great success for me. My next step is to restore a full NAND backup from a friends of mine (from a GT-I9305).
I wondered about that, after I restored a working EFS, there were no NV data.

Hi guys, i had the same issue: after a botched restore of nandroid backup (something to do with it being over 2GB, different story though), I lost IMEI (null/null) and no baseband.
I was running CM so I tried to flash the original Samsung ROM, to no avail. Then a whole bunch of other stuff that didn't work, until:
- I flashed kitkat (which failed due to some error in the install script, dunno why)
- then flashed my last nandroid, which I had already flashed with no restoration of phone functionality, HOWEVER,
- I then flashed over that nandroid the modem files (see here: dropbox.com/sh/d2ljv1ylvr9nvib/M7UzMgux4f) , mine was Modem-I9305-XXUENE2.zip for i9305 LTE Intl.
- tadaa! fixed
hope this helkps anyone, took me some 20 hours of tinkering
