Instant, without any waits or faking switching off by set brightness to zero.
It's simulate pressing of power button.
Maybe this one will be interest for somebody

Nice! I'd be more interested if you could do unlock via soft keys as we had in Hero , i.e. home and menu, as I find the power button is too recessed for easy access.
Not sure if softkeys would be too easy to trigger by mistake tho ??

There is a hack for this but the menu key etc on the hd are not active when the screen is locked so it doesn't work. I did it today but you have to press power then the keys become active and you can use menu etc to unlock. Pointless as you still need to use power button first. The hero's keys were hard buttons as is the desire. It worked great on the desire. Unless anyone knows a way to have them active while locked? My power buttons a nightmare as it's not very clicky and really recessed. My wife's hd power button is much easier to use. Anyone know a way to have the soft keys active all the time?

Thanks for this app, i was waiting for.
Power button isn't as practical as your app to power down the phone.
Thank you mate.
Very Nice.... I like it.
But can you please Chance the Icon for me?
Im not able to do this myself.
I would like something like that.
Back and white with a bit gray or shaded would be very nice

In technical terms,yes- it would circumvent the process of having to use one's digit to find aforementioned hard power button and then depress said button.

Its just a app to lock the phone and turn the screen off. Not sure if it works on evo
Ok thanks buddy, Uninstalling.

Dunno if this is doable but have you seen the screen lock on the new nexus that was seen at recent web 2.0 summit. Its kinda like the effect you get when u turn off an old crt TV. Could you implement that instead of the current fade effect? Ta

i also agree ! that would be a perfect app and since most people do not check their sms upside down it would also be extremely practical

[THINK TANK] Remap Power/Lock to Camera Functions & Remove Low Battery Limitations
Hi all, i've had a thread about this in general for a while, but i think I would get more attention to this matter here.
I may not be a dev, but I do believe this is very doable, especially because Ive read this in a thread posted by rhcp0112345 titled Debug Codes which proves that the power button can be remapped to do certain functions just like my old G1 could do:
*#*#7594#*#*
This one is my favorite one. This code can be used to change the "End Call / Power" button action in your phone. Be default, if you long press the button, it shows a screen asking you to select any option from Silent mode, Airplane mode and Power off.
You can change this action using this code. You can enable direct power off on this button so you don't need to waste your time in selecting the option.
Click to collapse
I also remember devs adding support for a Reboot Option to the Power Off Menu, so I think if that is possible, then it should be possible to add a Camera option to that list, and when the Camera is open, rather than use the power button to lock the screen and capacitive buttons, we can allow it to take pictures, and if you long press it, it will show the usual Power Off Menu plus the Lock option.
Also I was wondering if it was possible to remove what I call the Low Battery Limiter which denies the user access to the Camera, Avatar, Video Player and Music apps.
Opinions? Ideas?
Thanks for your time everyone! Our community is awesome!

If I remember correctly, the key mapping is actually in the kernal, which means that someone who was cooking up a full blown ROM would directly have to go in and map the driver function to the kernal. I don't think this is impossible, but it may not happen for a while. I do agree though, this is a very good idea except for moving Screen Lock to the menu for holding the power button. I think something simple like double press or Power+Volume Up. If I ever find time to muck around in the kernal source, I'll give this a look

ah so its all in the kernel i see. Yeah your idea the double tap sounds good too! I appreciate your interest in the idea! Do you know how to disable the Low Battery Limiter? would that be in the kernel too?
While they might not be in the right place, I think remapping the volume keys for the camera just makes more sense.

maybe someone could make an apk along with the kernel to remap it to any button you want. i remember the g1 had a hack that allowed that possibility so im sure the vibrant can do it if someone had the will and know-how

Thats not quite what I think they are talking about. That will simply make the popup that says "battery full, please unplug" go away. The issue is when your battery is low, the phone will deny you going into certain applications, such as the video player or other things.
Any progress on the low battery limiter?

Then what would you do with the zoom in/out function that's currently mapped to the volume rocker?
I think the current "Lock Screen" function of the power button is useless, and would make way more sense as a physical button for the shutter.

so i tried contacting JAC about this through a Private Message a few days ago, he hasnt responded yet but he's been active on twitter lately, so maybe he doesnt check his PMs, i dont have a twitter so i was wondering if anyone that does could tweet this thread to him and ask if he would be interested in implementing it in his kernel?
remapping the volume keys isn't necessarily in the kernel. just install adw launcher or launcher pro and add the camera app to your dock. it's easier.
xREVOx, I think you misunderstood the OP. I believe he is suggesting the power button be remapped to the camera shutter, which I believe is an excellent idea. I would love to help, if I could. I know c++, but have never messed with the linux kernel or android rom dev so I doubt I would be of much use. Either way, I would lover to see it a part of CM 6.1 when that comes out

Like MinosDis said I was thinking of having an option to add Launch Camera to the power button menu, and once the camera app is launched the power button could be used as a physical shutter button.
Also I really wanna get rid of that low battery popup that prevents access to the music player video player and camera.
If anyone with a twitter echoes my sentiments perhaps they can retweet this thread to @wesgarner or @justanotherdev because I can't get ahold of them on here and I have no twitter.

Hey eugene thanks for your input and contribution I don't think anyone made any progress on this front. JAC told me it is rom AND kernel related if I wanted the battery limits removed and the camera button remapped so it's not that easy. I'm very glad and thankful that you handled the low battery limitations thank you so much!
Just in case anyone subscribed to this thread.
There's an app in the market called "SGS Tools". You can now use the power button as a shutter button, take pictures when battery is low, and pinch to zoom on the camera (it's a little sluggish). Thanks to Fr4gg0r for developing this.

Hi guys,
So, as the thread says, i am having a problem with screen positioning, its landscape mode and i want it to go portrait mode, BECAUSE i have a damaged X1, some microchip is damaged, and the only buttons working is the turn on button and the camera button, but everything which goes for the touch is working perfectly.
SO, when i start ANDROID system, i always get it in landscape mode, and as none of my buttons work, i cant just "slide out and slide in" the telephone to change the view, so is there any way to change the default starting view ? maybe to change some kind of code or line in settings ?

On some of the iPad knockoffs running android, they put only the home button on the device, and put software buttons for back and menu in the top right of the screen. Maybe you can find some way to get that?

As for the rotate, when I press the menu button on the home screen, it seems to realise that the keypad is in fact closed and rotate the correct way. So if you can get the menu button up there, then press that on the homescreen and it should rotate to the correct orientation.

You can maybe remap the keys like this:
Camera focus = back
Camera = home
Power = menu
But I don't know how to do it.
Sent from my MSM using XDA App
Camera focus is already mapped to back button in "Froyo FRG83 - Android 2.2.1 Beta-Release [06-11-2010] from neopeek", but camera is mapped to turn off.
Also with that configuration, how would you turn off your device or put it into standby?

Take out the battery to turn off.
Have a timer that enters standby after some minutes if nobody touch it and listen to all working keys so he can exit standby.
And if I would have his X1 I would be pleased if it could run Android.

Was thinking of trying to find a way to disable the right side hardware buttons myself. They are fine until you are trying to reposition the tablet and accidentally press one. Or lose your grip and are grasping for purchase and press one then. Very annoying for sure.

I have tried fluorescent reinforcement stickers, but you can not see them that well in total darkness. As far as disabling the keys you have to cover them with something thick like leather or many layers of paper. I tried sticky notes.... several layers of them but they still pick up your touch

I might be way off, but I saw an app in the market called Button Remapper. I haven't had a chance to dig into it, but it looks like it's able to remap the soft keys on the bezel. I don't know if they can be remapped to null or an empty command, but at the least maybe they can be remapped to something that doesn't do much (like dpad up/down/left/right or something).
If I get a chance to play with it, I'll report back. Of course, anybody who beats me to it is encouraged to post their results.
EDIT:
Hey, it worked. I decided to jump into it and try it out. I basically just popped in and replaced any buttons that were soft buttons (search/home/menu/back) with DPAD buttons. I don't know if changing every reference is required or if there are better options than using DPAD buttons, but it's a start.
EDIT AGAIN:
DPAD worked fine but I kept accidentally selecting links and whatnot in the browser. I tried End Call, since we don't have phone capability, but it seemed to just close whatever app I was in. Ended up binding Back/Menu to Volume Down and Search/Home to Volume Up, which is working well.
EDIT AGAIN AGAIN:
Even better, Focus seems to not do anything at all (obviously), unless in an app that uses the camera's focus. Don't know how I didn't notice that. Now to train myself to never use the soft keys!

How easy is it to revert back to stock button action? Or do you turn this function ON each time you boot and then run this program?
At each bootup there's a notification item that you can select to restore to your defaults, which you can clear until the next restart, in case something gets borked.
I have 4 very small black metal "nail covers" that I superglued directly on the side next to each soft button. Now I just feel the button with my index finger and use the side of my thumb to press the screen next to it, works great in the dark, better than the adhesive pads I had. Very small and black and low profile...

I'm always looking for feedback and tips/suggestions for new articles so feel free to comment or use the contact form to send an email at any time you think of something
I have done this to all my Samsung phones,,,is there a way to enable the menu softkey as well?

In the Pie Control application, there is a option to set a button as the menu key(it requires root access). So you could create a fourth button in the pie controls app or you could even set one of your pre-set buttons to execute the menu key when a long-press is detected on it
Cool is there a way to show the stock menu softkey without using pie?

So far I have only been able to find a solution for this that involves Xposed. Sadly, I don't think it's working on TouchWiz, right?

Very nice but.......it makes double tab home button camera to stop working and night clock also gets messed up. Also it makes the phone detect like if there were a magnetic cover on it.
