speaker sounds like crap - HD7 General

anyone else with similar issues?
the HD2 had AWESOME sound, and this phone has a ****ty speaker. this is a BIG NO NO for me as it will lead me to stray from this HD7

sound fix
go into the htc hub and download the sund enhancer app..the settings will definitely improve the sound

Even with sound enhancer it sounds like crap. I'm trying to give my hd7 back to handler.

+1. Calling it crap is ridiculous. It's just too damn quiet. The headphones that come with the HD7 are excellent though. I wish there was a way to make the speakers louder too though...

I wouldn't be suprised if the speakers are exactly the same as the ones in the hd2.
Seems for somethings they are loud and decent, and for others you can barely hear.
It would be nice if they would make the sound volume consistent across the phone.

Must agree that the phone speakers are rubbish, but i guess HTC and MS want us to use headphones with it like apple,
as you know they seem to have copied the best of both apple and android with this device

My iPhone and iPad speakers are loud enough to share a video or game with others. With the HD7 it's embarrasing sharing a video when you can barely hear it yourself and that's with the vol at max and hand cupped around the back trying to amplify the sound.

The quality is indeed crappy BUT has anyone noticed that there just a few days ago there was a Sound Enhancer update? I did it and it sounds slightly louder when it comes to notifications. I am not a fan on playing music/video through speaker and I use my Sennheiser headphones when it comes to listening. And boy turning SRS on it sounds like my legendary N91 ! And that was one of the musts for me.
But, indeed, it would have been cool to have a decent speaker.

i returned the HD7 because of the crappy speaker. gonna wait for another WP7 release with a louder speaker

Yes, poor it is.
When I put it into the pocket, I always let the camera side face outside, bcz the speaker is next to the camera, otherwise can bearly hear the incoming calls.

This is so NOT cool.
People are idiots because they expect their expensive devices to function the way they've been advertised to function?
Really?!
I don't think this is even a case of expecting everything for nothing. There are standards and these companies that want our hard-earned money need to adhere to them instead of spending millions of dollars on misleading AD campaigns; telling everyone that their devices are the best thing since sliced bread, but are too greedy to do any real QA on them because time to market is short and besides, they're really only concerned about the bottom-line.
Quality loudspeakers on a cellphone is one of the least things you should expect from a phone these days. Every smart AND dumb phone out there has a speakerphone. Its not rocket science.
For crying out loud, these jokers even designed to phone in such a way as to EMPHASIZE the speaker grilles on the top and bottom of the phone.
And yet the sound is obviously tinny and pathetic.
And by the way, downloading software tweaks to make your phone work the way its supposed to work right out of the box doesn't make you smart...it makes you the guy who paid HTC for the privilege of doing their work for them.
Congratulations!

Speakerphone on this phone is just plain embarrassing.
My g/f has the LG Optimus 7 and when is on a call on full volume and NOT on speakerphone it's actually louder than me ON speakerphone.
Now how bad is that?

Voice quality

Hello guys!
Ive read some reviews on the new HTC Diamond before i bought it, and they said that the sound during calls was crystal clear.
Just one wondering.. my old SE K800i had really good sound quality during calls. But my new HTC Diamond sounds awful and like "in a can". They here me where well, but i hear them pretty bad.
Do you guys have the same problem, or is it me? Ive removed all the plastics

Sadly, "some reviews" are not very objective. Or maybe they meant by "crystal clear" that you hear no static noise
Diamond have moderate sound quality, thats all. Like almost all WM devices (at least all I know of).
Yep. It sounds like the person in the other end is sitting in a barrel. Worst sound quality I've ever had on a phone, sadly.

I did a "blind" test of an iPhone (1st gen) and the diamond when it comes to sound quality of phone calls. The diamond won hands down. I know...not very scientific but the 4 "reviewers" all found the sound quality of the diamond better.
Well, iPhone never actually excelled in phone voice quality either. Not sure why iPhone was brought into comparison anyway, nobody said its better

same here, over gsm the voice quality is better then my past phones.
My phone sounds rubbish compared to my old Artemis. That phone was fine and had a good speakerphone too. The one on my Diamond simply cannot be used because you can't hear what the other person is saying.
The Diamond is probably the worst phone I have had in a long time. I am seriously disappointed and I'm only still using it because I already sold my artemis.
as compared to my previous Nokia, voice quality seems to be seriously lacking in the midtones.
But i'll accept it because i know Nokia phones are phones 1st

Well I used nice Nokia 6233, perfect as a phone I guess, for a few weeks just prior my Diamond, I couldn't wait for to have HTC again, their sound quality is just superb, if you have bad voice quality that's your network to blame and their stupid amr compression.
I wish I can say this for Diamond speaker also but I can't, it's a disaster, but I guess they can't put larger one in this tiny case, so who cares

My Nexus One not cutting it

every few years i like to buy a high end phone just because i do a lot with my phone. Ive owned phones like the sony w900, nokia n95, iphone 3g, and my nexus one. Besides the iphone 3g which i ditched and went back to my n95 in two weeks. after nearly half a year now and with the release of froyo that doesnt fix my complaints with the phone, i find that the nexus one has been my most disappointing. It seems either google or htc cut many corners with the phone (speaker, sound recording, phone overheating, weird problems with the touchscreen).
im not a fanboy or anything, i just prefer to buy the best possible phone when i buy one, and was considering an iphone 4 until steve jobs basically gave the middle finger to all those with the antenna problem. so now im looking into getting a galaxy s when it comes out.
anyone know if the poor sound in video recordings is exclusive to the n1, or all android phones? thanks
Well the Nexus uses an inferior codec for encoding its sound in video (AMR.)
Currently people are working to enable the AAC codec for video to allow for better recording. Since Android is open source, manufacturers can install their own codecs for use with their cameras, so its possible/likely that the Galaxy S will have better video capability (they also have included the DivX codec for watching movies I believe)

haha yes i know G1 was just as bad (a lil better imo,) but the nexus one is supposed to be a superphone! it sucks coming from nokias which cost $250-300 less than the nexus
The Moto Droid came with an outstanding speaker AND a 16gb microSD card. Those are the only two complaints I have with the N1. We should bombard HTC with emails demanding that they use speakers on par with Moto's going forward.

HTC HD7 Camera and sound issues

Hi guys,

The camera does not focus properly on distant objects not very far though.
The sound on the speakers is weak during calls. Need a booster app.

I'd highly recommend re-thinking your thread starting structure. You're not going to get many answers if you begin like this.
I personally believe (and you'll probably find 99% of other users who frequent the HD7 section of these forums feel the same) that there isn't a better device on the market today. So to call us "unfortunate owners" is kind of insulting.
But i'll tell you what i've told others on similar threads, i personally haven't noticed any problems with the camera and i haven't really noticed the volume not being loud enough. Perhaps it's due to personal use, or maybe you've got a dodgy device, i dunno.

Yes, I do own an HD7, and no, it's not really for just EQ settings. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, you only get EQ options when you use headphones.
It allows you to Choose Dolby or SRS for both Audio and Video. Equalizer specifically says for headphones or external speakers only. If you want to lump Dolby and SRS into that definition, fine.
All I can say, is that it makes quite a difference when playing youtube or netflix. Quite noticable.
( I use SRS )

To be honest it isn't like he isn't somewhat justified. I mean how can you mess up the speaker and camera on a phone that is nearly identical to its predacesor. My old school touch pro 2 speaker must be at least 3 times louder than this and the camera is just a joke. I put it side by side with an hd2 and it was like night and day.

No Phone Speaker Is Great
I don't think any phone speaker is going to match a good set of earphones or even middling desktop stereo speakers. Some phones may be better than others, but is that the main way we are going to listen to audio - music, movies, phone calls? Yes, I know that if you want to show a video to someone else, you need the speaker.
Several other threads have already noted that the Vivid speaker, like other HTC phone speakers, may not be very good. I've listened to music over my Vivid's speaker. It's okay but not great. It's about as good as the speaker sound on my daughter's iPhone. But you just aren't going to get good sound from a tiny speaker.

Also interested in this. I've seen one that increases the 3.5mm output, but not the speaker. I have my HP Touchpad patched to be louder and it works great. With all the dev support behind the Android platform I'd be surprised if there isn't a simple option to accomplish this.
I've noticed this with all of the recent HTC phones I've used. After having an Evo 3d, Inspire and the Vivid I've come to realize that HTC just doesn't care about speaker output. If I put my Vivid next to my 4s and play the same song the difference in volume and sound quality is crazy.

Played with the Rezound again today. First time I really tested built-in speaker. MUCH better than I've come to expect from HTC. Plenty of volume.
Most of these issues, low volume, too much treble, no bass... I was able too fix too some degree with the Volume+ app. It's in the Android market.

I'll second the "invest in a good set of headphones" recommendation, but that's probably because I'm an audiophile. (Ultrasone Edition 8 owner checking in)
Still, I use the speaker on my phones... a lot. It needs to be capable of reaching comfortable levels. At the AT&T store, I did my usual factory reset to the Vivid and then tried both Volume+ (have used before on a different handset with mixed results) and an EQ program. They both seemed to work for system sounds but conflicted with streaming programs like Spotify and Pandora. One made things even quieter. The other locked the phone and required that I pull the battery.
I'm surprised to find that apps that increase volume seem to be niche. There seemingly isn't something out there that's stable enough to be relied upon as an all-purpose solution. Of course, this wouldn't be an issue if the manufacturer invested in a quality component in the first place, but I digress.
As previously stated, I'm quite impressed by the speaker in the Rezound, so it looks like there actually IS something good coming from the Beats partnership. (because their headphones are garbage across the board... as is pretty much everything else associated with Jimmy Iovine) By my ears' account, it held up to the speakers found in the average Samsung handset. (i.e. quite loud) And that screen... best I've seen bar none. The screen on the Vivid is my favorite feature of the handset and, in my opinion, the best by far on AT&T, but the extra resolution on the Rezound takes overall fidelity up a notch. With the recent announcement that HTC is planning another high end phone for AT&T perhaps it will be in the same vein and, if it is, that's the handset I'm opting for. As it stands, I may end up going the bang for the buck route to tide me over and then sell it toward an outright purchase if/when it releases. Of course, should the phone not materialize as expected I wouldn't want to be stuck with something that came as a disappointment and I have to say... the Atrix 2 seems to be the most solid across the board handset currently on the carrier. (and one of the best in this regard on any for that matter)
There is a way to make the phone go to speaker, by turning the phone face down. My Vivid came with that box checked. It seems to affect the sound quality of the whole phone. If you uncheck that box, it makes a world of difference, and the phone sounds better, including any music played through the speaker. Just my opinion, but it worked for me.
Settings>Sound>Flip for speaker(uncheck this box).

I tested with a song using the HTC music player. With the flip box unchecked, I could hear a little difference in the sound from the external speaker. The song sounded a little "deeper" and less tinny as others have described it. Since I've never used the speaker phone feature, I left the box unchecked.
After upgrading to ICS and getting Beats Audio, I can say that the sound quality is noticeably better when patched into my car's system via headphone jack. Beats Audio doesn't do squat unless you're using the headphone jack though.

Sound quality

So, the Xperia Z was officially launched at a PR event in Dubai yesterday, and the price seems okay too (2499 AED, ~680 USD). I've seen concerns about the screen quality but will check that out myself when its out in stores (March). Can anyone who has the Z comment on the sound quality on the device ?
There is already a thread in Q&A.
What kind of sound quality are you talking about? Audio playback?
I'm concerned by the volume of the earpiece, and how loudly and clearly you can hear people during a phone call. In other words, what the X10 sucked ass at.
If you are concerned about audio check out the HTC One.
Stereo Front speakers, amps, amazing all around.
I've just received my phone from japan and the volume of the phone whilst playing youtube videos or music is appalling. It's hardly audible even at the highest setting. If you're wanting a phone with good speakers this is not the phone, you'll be highly disappointed. Other than the sound everything else on the phone is perfect. Great build quality etc. let me know if you want pictures or to know more about the phone id be happy to post
ya, I heard the speakers are compromised because of water proof. Guess I still got an option for head set which is what I use for my current phone.

Hardly audible? I wonder what you have done with my ears
It's not as loud as some other phones but it's still more than adequate. It's enough to wake me up in the morning (quite easily even) and the best thing is that it doesn't sound distorted even at the highest volume.

I may have over exaggerated with my statement xD. But to be honest it's loud speaker whilst playing music is poorer than an a Lg Optimus L3, I was forced to use the optimus L3 whilst waiting for my xperia z lol so I know full well what it sounds like it. Sound via the headphone jack is fine just the loud speaker sucks it would have problems waking me up but their is always vibration so it doesn't really bother me.

Well, that's a wrap with my interest in the Z. Nothing more annoying "to me" than a phone with crappy speakers.

if you have a iphone 5 and use the life proof case from fre that is pretty much the sound quality of the Xperia Z maybe slightly less Don't let that one feature prevent you from buying this fantastic phone it truly is amazing. And that's my honest opinion of the device ;D i'll upload a video for you guys of the sound quality
as I said guys here is the video of the phone sound volume via the loud speaker. If you guys have any requests on how I should record the phone please let me know this was recorded by a galaxy tab 10.1. It's actually not that bad as I previously mentioned please enjoy if you want me to play any other song let me know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9V9UysM0hI&feature=youtu.be

Howdy, what is the in-call volume like with the earpeice? Loudspeaker is not a major issue for me, but in call volume must be good. My One X now is really quite bad in this regard.
Thanks

In call volumes are fantastic can't complain very loud and clear, had no issues with people not being able to hear me. if you know of any way I can test I wouldn't mind making a video for you ;] but trust me when I say it's good even when taking public transport people on the other end of the call could still hear me very clear without issues. I highly recommend this phone much better than the lg optimus g or galaxy s3 I previously owned. I aint just saying it because I own the sony xperia z haha just my honest opinion.
That's great news thanks no idea how you would do a video lol but if you say it's good then I'm happy.

Easily. It's a little less loud than most other phones but it's still loud. It's not exactly inaudible.
I can say the sound quality with ClearAudio+ is nice but it there is not the best. I have my Note 2 optimized with Neak Kernel and his tweaks (Wolfson) are great.. The equalizer from XZ but the hammer looks great and can be adjusted some. Moreover, the unit is still fresh with the time kernel and various mods and custom roms come naturally (I also gets to cook too for XZ)
I don't want to crash the party but the speaker is just lame, it's positioned at the right side bottom of the phone which means that when you hold the phone you will cover the speaker (left hand with your fingers, holding it with right hand isn't an option because the speaker is in the palm of your hand) The speaker is tiny and totally not loud, and when watching a video you can hear the sound come out of the right corner instead from the phone, it's very directional, i am very disappointed about this.
Also sound through headphones is not as good as i would have liked and certainly not as full sounding as with S3.
