Captivate Earphone/Mic Click Options - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
One thing I really don't like about the Captivate is the earphone and mic that comes with it. The only options are single click options (play, stop, pick up, hang up), and none of other options like skip next track, skip previous track, activate voice control (long hold on the magnified glass). Is there an app that adds these functions or a way to enable the options? Or is that up to Cognition?
Thanks!

Hi,
Did I post this in the wrong section, or was this thread moved? I've never used an i9000 before, and not sure what the earphone/mic is like. I was in fact specifically speaking of the Captivate.
Thanks.

Will rectify the problem with your thread in a while. Closed temporarily wile we sort things out.
WB

Thanks for the rectification!

Hi, curious to know if you found an answer for your original question?

Which one in particular?
If you're on stock ROM, the click options are not available. That said, not all custom ROMs have it either, most do. I guess it has to be enabled within the kernel. I believe anything with Voodoo Sounds will have that. As far as my experience has shown.
As for voice control, I haven't found anything that worked. Can't say I've done much research into it though.

Just an fyi
If you long press the button, it skips to the next song

How to turn off Shutter Sound for Camera in Cyanogen 4.1.999?

I searched the forums for this and could not get any help on this. Is it possible to turn off the clicking sound for taking camera shots? I went to Settings, but there were no options for this. I am fine with the camcorder one, but find it irritating and noisy when more discretion is needed. Thanks
Two possible ways, although I have not tried either.
1. There are a couple apps in the market that are supposed to do this. Never used them and don't know about Donut compatibility.
2. Replace the actual shutter sound file with a blank sound file. I've seen this discussed in some old threads on here, so you should be able to find instructions with a search.
No 2 is your best bet.... quick and easy..
Also if you just put your phone on silent/vibrate mode that will shot the sound, at least it does for me.

Thanks so much for the advice. I think number 2 is the best answer I'll try to dig up the instructions.... hopefully it is searchable. Thanks again for everyone who chipped in

Enabling G1 Maps Navigation has started annoying call behaviour - HELP!

I have Cyanogen's 4.2.3.1 installed with the 2.0 Maps application and Navigation works correctly for me.
Since I installed Navigation I am getting a huge "Double tap to answer" button that pops up on my screen when a call comes in.
A) It seems to have shortened the amount of time my phone rings before sending to voicemail
B) The double tap is flaky
C) It looks like ****
I have searched Google and the forums to see if this was an issue people had but can only find people talking about the in-call unlock screen.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it?
Is your navigation actually on while this is happening? If you have the little triangle above in your task bar then it is.
If you are fully exited from maps this shouldn't come up. At least it doesn't on my phone.
This happens all the time now. Even with GPS off and the Maps app not even loaded. Persists through reboots.
Odd. This happens while I have maps loaded, but not when its not loaded.
How did you install navigation?
push back our old build.prop
Will pushing back my old build.prop disable navigation?
No navigation only needs it for the install. I thought that might be the problem. Push your old prop files back and good luck!
this happend to me aswell, but i actually liked the double click - box look
that would also happen when my phone was just sitting here, no nav on, it would just light up, and have the double click box lit up.
i was on 4.2.3.1.
all that ended when i flashed cyan 4.2.4
i didnt wipe.. or fix permissions.
i installed navs from other thread [basically just the update.zip and clear data]
and everythingg works just fine. thanks to all!
I didn't know 4.2.4 was out yet but thought a Cyanogen Mod update would probably fix that issue. Reverting to my previous *.props has fixed all the issues.
You should've posted this in the Q&A section or an existing related thread.
Anyways.. To get rid of the double tap box, you need to push back the original build.props. If you do that however, you'll lose navigation in a few hours, like 6 or 7 hours.
There's already a thread about this that's named something like "unlocked features from new build.prop".

I will remember that next time. After being on here for almost 3 years I forget that the newbie youngsters like to change how we have done things here. Like one thread per issue. Thank you for the helpful link to the thread you thought I should have posted it in, great to see that XDA hasn't gone all to hell with newbie senior members who just throw out dictates and then can't even do a decent job of helping people.
use this if you are running cyanogen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583684
Heres the thread for updated features from build.prop
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583030
I just did the install with the newest cyanogen and then tried calling myself and I dont have any issues.
Also, navigation works fine.
I have a G1 with CM 4.2.4, and I'm not having the issue either. I tested incoming calls with the NAV and in maps.
I finally got Navigation -and- paid apps in Market to show, but, I am experiencing the same problem as the OP mentioned.
I don't want to lose Navigation but this is a little annoying. Someone mentioned if I put the original build.prop and build.trout.prop back, Navigation will not show up. How can we get the best of both worlds?

i swear i feel like people just post without reading anything. i posted a link to a thread that will fix your problem. look up a few posts. another member here had an update.zip that will install the maps without breaking the market, without making the weird floating box, and without any other weird problems. if you are running cyanogen it will work perfect.
the .props need to me modified to allow navigation to remain longer than a few hours. just apply the update-navigation.zip from recovery mode and it will fix your issue.

Actually I am having this same issue WITH using that .zip but for me it is no big deal. We are lucky to have Nav, I will take it with whatever problems (temporary of course) it comes with!
i had the double tap issue after i manually installed nav on wednesday. today i ran that .zip and the box is gone. i dont get why it would work for some people and not others.
the zip was actually updated 3 or 4 times. so if you applied it when it was first dropped, maybe you have an old version

Ascending Ringtone...?

Is there an app that can make the ringtone volume ascending...?
Thx in advance.
you could probably use a wave editor like audacity to edit your ringtone, then use a fade in effect that would slowly raise the volume to max level
Good idea. Is there an app which will do it automatically on the G1...?
You can check any of the ringtone makers on the market, but I doubt they can do that so you would have to do it for each ringtone.
we need a thread where everyone posts awesome ringtones. I'm getting burnt out on the default ones.

Thanks for the idea... Still think this feature is pretty basic by today's standard and should have been included in Android by now...
Cheers and Happy New Year!
I have never seen this feature stock on anything, nore would I want or use it.

My old samsung phone had it, and I liked it. The phone would start by vibrating then start ringing softly and get progressivly louder. I didn't need to keep changing volume settings if the room was getting louder or softer. That was one of the first things I looked for on my phone when I got it.
I remember an application that changed the ring volume based on ambiant noise, but that's not what you were asking about but could help you in your last situation.

It's been a standard feature of just about every Nokia made in the last 10 years!
Never owned a nokia so....
Motorola Cliq has that option BTW so it can be done. May be someone can port it to G1. I've never used it but sounds like a good option to have.
Cliq is on 1.6, correct...? So it's a custom feature by Moto...?
Is it included in 2.0, 2.0.1 or 2.1...?
Cliq is 1.5, I don't think it's even going to get upgraded to any other versions... yeah Motorola sucks.
You can use Ascending Ringtone App that collected on this package:edited...
[highlight]MOD Edit: No linking to warez. First and final warning[/highlight]
There's an app in the market called 'Ascending Ringtone' for $.99 that claims to do what you're asking.
@mahdian please remove your post, we do not support warez here.

Just got the HTC one. Any stock android roms?

Hey guys,
So, I just picked up the HTC one today. As I expected, the hardware is great, but I have to admit i'm really disappointed in the software. It feels like a child's toy. So few options. I'm coming from an Xperia Ion. I thought the software on that was terrible and limited but HTC's is worse. It obviously didn't take me long to flash my Ion. and it seems I'm not even willing to give the HTC 24 hours to flash it either. So, I'm used to Cyanogen Roms and other xperia specific roms which were awesome. But I see no stock android roms for the HTC One. All seem to have HTC Stock Roms and that's exactly what I don't want. I don't want to be limited by the choices HTC gives me.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of a Stock 4.1.2 or 4.2 android rom for the HTC. And if not, if you recommend any particular Rom considering the following:
1. I need LTE
2. I want a barebones phone that I can add what i need to, not the other way around. I hate these freakin manufacturers and their obsessive need to add crap to a perfectly fine platform. I'd get the nexus 4 is it's hardware was better and had LTE and didn't look like ****, but hey, that's not an option.
Things I hate about the One.
1. the phone dialer buttons are badly placed
2. no control over headset button actions - even with 3rd party apps
3. No menu button that I can find - yes I know each app has one, but it's not standard and that's annoying
4. Can't seem to find a recent apps/multi-task button
5. Bunch of home app features missing or just too limited - yes I know i can replace with a launcher
Recent apps/Multi-tasking: Quickly double tap the Home key to get this.
(As you may have noticed, long-press Home opens Google Search)
Multitask by double tapping the home button. But ya I flashed to trickdroid for the One and its still HTC stock, but it is alot better, Gives you the option of making the long hold on the back button a menu button.
There a few minimal roms in the development forum.
@kuroneko007 -- thanks for that. looked everywhere. I even tried double tapping a couple times, but seems my timing was off, which is just a testament to how bad an idea that is. Double tap incorrectly and you end up on the home page. No big deal, but all these little things just irk me. Ya, I had noticed the long press home feature.
@sdla4ever -- trickdroid will take a look. was really hoping there'd be a non HTC option, but i realize it's a very new phone and maybe there just hasn't been enough dev time just yet. I am hoping that'll change.
I saw a thread on an app called SwipePad, which will help with getting around the phone from anywhere with gestures, which is cool, so that might help a bit, but i just feel like there are a lot of details I was spoiled with on my previous roms that I'm just not getting here at all. Anyway, any other tricks and tips you guys have found that boost your productivity or provide more options, i'm always open to hearing.
Thanks for your input guys.

Look in the HTC One development forum there are ROMs that are even more minimal.
Give it a month or two. The phone has just been released and many people have not even got hold of their pre-ordered units yet.

Ya, I figured that was the case, but just thought I'd ask, on the off-chance i was missing something obvious. I wonder if Cyanogen will make a ROM for it. Of all the roms i've tried, I think i like the CM ones best, though not by much. SOme really good stuff out there.

I have the opposite problem - I hate the fact that for many apps which already have a menu button a separate menu button appears at the bottom of the screen, taking up valuable screen estate. Any way to stop this?

My suggestion would be to install the Renovator ROM with the de-sense option in AROMA, then install Apex launcher and set gestures for actions you want such as menu and search...etc. Or you could give the CM from the ATT version a shot, but it seems to be an early build so there could be some loose ends right now.
I think this is a great phone the has some questionable design decisions from HTC in both the hardware and software. But everything can be somewhat dealt with with a little trial and error and research.

I found a much better way - I installed this kernel and disabled the three menu button menu - now use the htc logo as the menu button!
@apd - that's exactly what I mean. Sure the apps have their own menu area, but it's a waste of space and not always in the same place for every app, which is annoying and like you said takes up real estate. if one of the capacitive buttons could serve as the menu button, that would be awesome. As for the last reply, what do you mean you disabled the 3 menu button menu? I understand that it's possible to use the htc logo as a cap button, but what other button are you referring to that you disabled? You referring to the software/app buttons that show up in every app? Please explain. I wonder what roms that kernel works with. Will have to look into that.
@lilhaiti - i agree. phone is solid, but there are a few things that imo weren't done with much thought. I am and have used Apex for a couple years, and between that and Swipe Pad, I've covered most of the basics, tho, essentially I'm installing apps to do what the phone should be able to do from the start. Whatever, no big deal, but these details are still important to me. As for the CM, I'll wait. I'm not in a huge rush, but I'll definitely try it once it's stable.

adding
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
to your build.prop file will remove the three dot menus in all apps bar HTC's.
I did this and have the HTC Logo as a menu button.
Bonus question:
Does anyone know how to keep the three-dot menu in apps which implement it properly in the action bar, but hide it in apps where it appears as a black bar?

Add bootsound and poweroff sound in CM10

I'm in a desperate need of adding boot sound and power off sound to CyanogenMod 10. I am actually using a MIUI 3.6.14 ROM, a port of the official MIUI, and it's based on CM10 (or 10.1).
I know no one has ever been able to use boot sound and power off sounds in CM10, I'm actually wondering why these were disabled in first place. But anyway, I'm not here for the simple copy-paste solution.
If anyone has any idea on how to add these sounds in CM, no matter how many system files I have to edit and mess around with, please let me know. I really hate having a silent boot with a simple animation logo... it sucks big time.

looks like it is capable of playing sound but CM has gone ahead and removed whatever we need to hear it. check this site

Yeah... ok, they removed important things because they think bootsounds are useless. That's fine for me if that's their philosophy about this, but they could at least leave us a guide on how to add it back!
Also, I wonder why no other developer has been able to restore it. I've seen many great ROM developers out there, making a lot of complicated modifications in their ROM, but no one is able to restore a simple bootsound?? That's crazy man, unbelievable.

10.1.3. is still obviously just beta OS because they've abandoned any real development and just moved on to something else... like Oppo.
In-call volume sux.
Ring volume is great, but once you answer a call, you gotta find yourself some stinky pay phone so that your caller can be heard.
You can't hear tap volume unless your ear is up to the phone.
Quote from Steve Kondick: "We've rejected boot sounds about a dozen times now. The general consensus is that they suck and should be abolished."
Where's the consensus on call volume? You guys don't like that either?
Even the in-call volume settings have been greyed out. LOL!
