Can it charge while in use? - Galaxy Tab Accessories

Yesterday, I was using my Galaxy Tab while charging from wall socket. I used an USB extender (1 meter passive), as I was sitting away from the power socket. My tab was loosing battery % while I was surfing on 3G. I confirmed it from 3 different apps (including spare part) that I lost a good 10% for 1hr surfing, all this while it was charging from wall socket. There were no loose connections and the notification area was showing the charging icon.
To be on safer side I rebooted the tab to verify the battery figures. It was loosing charge while still charging from the wall socket? I am not sure if I am the only one who is facing this issue? Is it behavior by design? Or is it the usb extender that was causing all the trouble?

I've charged my Tab whilst using it without issue.
Regards,
Dave

Must be the USB extender? Maybe it can only let through the normal usb charge.

Its the extender causing the issue. Had the same problem

Then get a better extender cable, I'm using one now with no issues.

Thank you guys for all the responses. Yes, it turns out to be the USB extension cable which is causing the issue. I can charge the tab when in use without using any USB cable extensions.
The way out here I guess is to use a power extension rather than a USB one

You just need to find a good usb extension cable, in a normal usb cable one wire isn't used, so, cheap manufacter, simply don't put it in the cable. I guess that samsung, with his 2Ampere charger, must use all the wires.

Cannot charge with wall outlet

Recently my X1 cannot be charged with USB cable through wall outlet & even car charger , but able to charge with USB cable through PC.
Anyone do encounter the same problem?
Well that's a strange one - how long was it connected to the wall?
Without getting into the discussion about volts and amps provided, and amps drawn by the phone, any method should charge.
In terms of speed, I would think the wall would charge fastest (see above), and the USB slowest.
Did the phone show on the top bar, the charging icon when attached to the wall? Or after a period of time there was no increment in the % charge showing??
If the battery was down to 0%, you probably wouldn't see an immediate increase in the % charge. The % charge is orientative, especially at both ends of the scale.

I do agree with you. Charging with wall outlet is faster. Therefore, normally I'm charging my X1 with wall outlet, unless in office, will use PC USB.
Top bar never show charging icon, but once I charge it with PC USB, the charging icon show up immediately.
It seems like no power for the USB when connected to the wall outlet. I've tested with battery removed, plugged in USB cable connected to wall outlet, there is no charging illumination light. I cannot power on it.
I tried to recall, it happened after I used a USB charger for my MP3 player. The next day, when I tried to charge with car charger. To my surprise, the USB connection notification showed up (I do remember, while charging with wall outlet or car charger, it will never prompt me for USB connection).
I don't think, it is the ROM issue. Try a few ROM still having the same problem.
From now, I got to live with PC USB :|

it's not caused by the ROM, I'm very sure. I've installed different ROM. The problem still exist.
I am having a similar problem. When the phone completely discharges , i am unable to charge it with any power adapter or even car charger. I have to initially charge the phone using a PC , then after the power is around 15% , then the phone gets charged with a normal adapter.. any suggestions??
same problem. It happends when the battery is completely discharged.
what I do is use a charger w/ low amp rating (.1) and plug it in for at least 10-20min. Give it some time, it will start charging after a while (indicated by the blinking lights). After that, you can turn it on and charge it normally
I had a similar problem twice. Both times I solved it by replacing the charger.

the solution was buying another charger but..the usb mass storage issue still not working as a flash drive!!

[Q] Whats With Charging This Thing?

When I first got the phone earlier this week, I could plug it into the charger in the wall just fine with no issues, it would just charge. Now suddenly it started telling me USB connected and goes to the MTP screen and of course locks up the phone.
I can of course bypass this by switching the phone to mass storage mode, but since I have Kies and use it occasionally, it would be nice to not have to switch that setting each time depending on my charging/syncing situation.
Why would it have not locked it up with the MTP screen originally when charging from the wall but now it does? The results are the same whether its plugged into the wall or the USB port on the computer. I have two Captivates bought brand new on a family plan, both do this now with any combination of chargers and USB cables, wall USB port, or car charger. Neither one has a common application installed since the other is my girlfriends who hasnt done much to it yet, so Im blaming the phone itself for now...
~T.J.
Interesting. I just checked with my BB charger and they dont do it using that charger, but they do it as soon as I connect the stock charger again.
Im wondering if its a voltage sensing circuit thats tripping due to the different voltages which should be applied - either wall charger or USB port. Maybe for some reason my wall chargers arent putting out enough voltage and its thinking its a USB port, but the BB charger is putting the right amount of voltage out?
Am I on base as to how it differentiates between wall or USB port? The number of pins obviously doesnt matter as all the cables have all the pins in them, unlike some charger cables which only have the power and ground. The only thing I can think of is that it uses the amount of voltage/current to tell the difference and create its reaction.
~T.J.
Sounds like a problem with the stock charger, maybe usb cable alignment. My iphone wall adapter does this with the samsung cable but the samsung wall adapter doesn't, same with my car charger from att. Also I have a $5 walmart car charger that has a cable that splits into both a mini usb and a micro usb that isn't a real usb cable, it's charge only. That cable has no problem on any wall or car adapter. I believe the phone detects if its connected by checking voltage on a data pin (just a guess really) so if a nonstock charger is used it assumes that it is a computer. But it may also be a data signal that is given off by the charger.

did you try a new charger and if so, did it work? I've had my captivate since Thursday and on Thursday it charged and everything fine, but then yesterday,
a) no computer I connect it to while recognize it, no matter what I have it set too and have latest drivers installed
b) if I charge it, after I unplug it, it locks up to black screen and I have to remove the battery to get it to work
c) I also have an in-dash touchscreen monitor in my car that has a usb port because it works with an ipod. I plugged the usb into to use it as a car charger, unplugged it, same thing
d) it did say usb connected after it was unplugged, but I switched from mass storage to ask on connection and it went away
so is an actual wall charger the solution?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
and now I unplug it, and if it locks, it will not unlock, just black screen
I have to take out the battery and then only way to get it to turn back on, is to plug it back in the wall

No is not the same than ipad, ipad is possible to recharge with new macs (that what apple says on the web site, the don't say how new though). But is true the iPad has 2A battery versus the Galaxy Tab that has 4000mAh, I was hoping that there was a way to recharge it (slowly but at least to keep it alive when is connect)

Mine is the same guys... I left my AC charger at work over the weekend and have been charging it via USB the whole time... Slow but it gets there if you leave it on over night!
Mine won't charge unless I use the power adapter from Samsung
Mine does charge but slowly from USB.... you should also know that different PC boards and laptops have different power outputs.... in most cases, your tab should charge very slowly on USB power. Mine charges and has BT and Wifi on also... but with heavy use and plugged in to my laptop, it may offset and drain ever so slightly....
Same thing goes for car chargers... if not rated for higher output, it will charge VERY slowly. The original Samsung car charger has a much higher power output. If you can find one that has the same aftermarket USB car adaptor for Ipad charging, that should work too

The contacts on mine are upside down compared to an iPad/iPod/iPhone charger. The blade on which the contacts sit is also higher in the charger slot than an iPad charger. How did you get it to fit without breaking something?
Some PC:s (motherboards) have so weak power output via USB, that they just barely provide a mouse and a keyboard but nothing more.
So anyone should not expect it to be enough for charging Tab.
Tab's own power supply gives 2 Amps out!
My experience about car-usb-adapters: one can charge Tab, other quite similar for some reason not. However, both charge Galxy S fine.
Just something to keep in mind as an option... Usb 3.0 will give more juice to usb cables than current usb ports. Apple has "cheated" and already increased the power to the regular usb ports on their newer laptops on par/better with usb 3.. So... If you get usb 3 cards installed you'll have a port with enough amps to charge the tab. Easier/cheaper to just buy a pdmi cable but if you are about to upgrade to usb 3 its more incentive to do so.

Regarding the ipad charging you can use the below link to to download an ASUS program that will boost the USB power for Windows this works for the ipad and it's showing as charging when connected to my PC this may also work for galaxy tab

Charging using usb on my mbp does take a long time. I timed it and it took at least 6 hours to charge from completely empty to full. Its ok since I plug it in when I'm about to go asleep and by the time I'm up its fully charged.

Careful with that.
Seems it has the not-uncommon tendency to screw up USB drivers to the point that mice and keyboards won't work either, especially on Win7 and Vista X64 machines. It got me, had to do a system restore to fix it. Neat idea though.

USB port should give at least 500mA. But anything more is OK. So Apple can make their USB ports to give anything over 500mA and it is well within the standard. Actually it is good for everyone because if Apple port can give 2A you can use non powered hubs and have power for lots of USB devices.
Actually the Tab charges fine (albeit slowly) from a USB, you just have to be aware of a few things. Firstly as mentioned above some USB ports provide more power than others. Try the different ports on your machine and you'll soon figure out which ones work best. Secondly, while the Tab will display the "Connect your charger" message, it is actually charging. Go into Settings, About Phone, Status and watch the battery level. It'll take a while but will creep up. Finally, it charges faster when the Tab is switched off. ie: if you're actually using it, you won't get a charge, if you have it in standby with screen off, it'll charge slowly (takes most of a day for a full charge) and if the Tab is switched off, it'll go a lot faster (though still not as fast as with the power adapter.)
This is good to know as you can plug it in to your computer and let it set on your desk at work all day and know that it is slowly trickle charging.
I also found that plugging the USB cable into an Apple adapter (from an iPhone) brought up the same "Connect your charger" message, but did charge the Tab, faster than a USb but not as well as my samsung plug.

[Q] Need a better charger cable when plugged into my work computer

So to my understanding the 2a that is supplied to our phones when plugged into the wall is due to the wall part and not the cable. Is there any difference in the cables that could provide me a better charge? I leave my phone plugged into my work computer most of the day and it doesnt seem to give it much of a charge. Is this something wrong with the USB port itself (can you systematically change the output provided on your computer? I wonder if t would make a difference in the front vs back usb ports.
Also I am not against getting a nice dock for it while its here at work but I like to keep it in landscape mode. If anyone knows of one available to keep it on with a clock or something and still eb able to charge it I would be appreciative.
Thanks in advance.
The computer usb ports are normally limited to 500mA. The oem wall charger is 2000mA. So you get 4x the current when plugged into the wall. On top of that some chargers have basic circuits in them that the phone recognizes so it knows to pull more current. If you want a fast charge use the supplied wall charger.

i do wonder about this too, as my iphone will charge (sufficiently) thru pc, but the note 2 takes forever
Do they sell or could you make a cable that has two usb plugs on the end, one that will plug into the computer for syncing and one that could plug into the oem wall charger for fast charging.
I would think you could use the two data wires in the usb to connect to the computer and the two power wires to go to the wall charger. Would be really easy to do and only require an old usb cable for the second male USB A end.
Does anybody have any experience with this or know if its possible. The dock seems to have this ability but I would prefer not to purchase an expensive dock.
Some of the more advanced PC motherboards out there have one or two high-current USB ports that can be set for dedicated smartphone/tablet charging. Most of these are Intel Sandy boards as far as I know.
FWIW the Perseus kernel charges far faster IME than the stock kernel.
The iPhone charges "more" than the Note 2 because the iPhone's battery has a smaller capacity. (1440 mAh vs 3100 mAh) so basically every 1% of battery on the Note 2 is over 2% on the iPhone.

Before I bought the note, I had a sgs with cm10 and a kernel that supports fast charge. It neglects the pins used for data signal on the usb and makes it a power source only, and I'm pretty sure I got around 1mah with this method though I didn't measure it.
Should be no reason for it not to work on our phones if a kernel supports the method.

Ok so this is my understanding. If it's a laptop they usually only have one usb port inside. its then run to a hub and from there split to all the other laptop usb ports that you see on the outside. so the power is usually lower than the 500ma. I thought the cable from cableforge.com was bad but it was just the low power from the laptop port.
This said USB 3.0 runs on its own line so it usually works better. now this is where i may be wrong isnt the usb 3.0 more than 500ma?

The iphone and most other phones charge "more" because they pulls the entire 500mA that the usb spec allows. For some reason, Samsung phones only pull 96mA over usb. A new cable won't make a difference.

Same problem here. No matter what external battery pack, this S3 mini is not detecting the battery pack as a charger. All of these packs work just fine with any other phone: tried with 2 SII, i8910, different Nokia phones, Blackberrry's etc.
I suspect that somewhere in the kernel there's no "3rd" unknown source or it has odd values, or it's somewhere else, but definitely soft problem as phone usb port works fine and recharges just fine from PC or laptop with any and every usb cable. Same goes for wall chargers. I haven't tried with car chargers just yet, but might do so. Just the phone is not mine, it's my wife's phone so I can't just take it with me.
Any suggestions?
Just a quicky: Is your phone trying or connecting to a PC in MTP mode?
XXAMA2 rom here and it always has only MTP or Picture mode, maybe this triggers something if on external power pack?
Edit: BTW, even when phone is turned off it won't charge the battery from the 3rd party external battery packs... weird.
Edit2: It started to charge out of 2.1A port on external pack after 5 minutes... then continued to charge once the phone is turned on. Later I unplugged it and plugged in again and it won't charge if the phone is on. Oh well, at least it can charge if first turned off. At least that when on the road and without wall plug...
Even more strange is what I'm getting now when plugging to Duracel external pack - phone starts the music player on it's own and starts to play... I think it's defo something related to MTP or such...
Strange. My power bank works just fine. The charging indicator shows when I plug my S3Mini with my power bank. (Cheap chinese brand. 5200mAh, 1.0 A)
Usually when the USB indicator showed up when you plug your external power source, the cable is the one with 4 lines (two for transferring data, and the other two for receiving electricity needed for charging, or +/- ).
Try using the USB cable with two lines only (electricity lines only, without data transferring lines)

Still, I'm happy it CAN work all right, so no more depleted battery when on the road / trip
