[Q] Charging when device is off... - HD7 General

Hi everybody!
First night with my new HD7....
As usual I turn off the device to charge during night, but when you plug its turn on again!
So... is it possible to recharge the HD7 when device is off?
Thank you!

I just got my HD7 home today and am experiencing the same thing.

Did you guys really turn it off... or just put it to sleep ? you have to really press hard to turn it off which gets a bit annoying sometimes.
Besides I dont turn my phone off.. just charge it overnight and it last me more than 12 hours a day with browsing, music and video and emails

It said "Goodbye". So I believe I turned it off.

Discussed already in the HD7 forum but I didn't check later to see if it's just HD7/HTC devices or all WP7 devices.
If it's all WP7 devices then it could be a feature to keep it on for wireless Zune synching. Zune will only wirelessly sync if a device is plugged in and charged >50%

hadn't noticed that before (don't really turn my phones off).
Maybe you could put it into airplane mode instead.

At the moment it isn't possible to charge the device while off as the default action is to sync wirelessly with Zune after 15 minutes of it being plugged in.
Like nrfitchet said, if you're worried about the radio waves next to you while you sleep or something then you could try Airplane mode.

Phone freezes after being charged all night?

99% of the time, i charge my phone over night when im sleeping, however everytime i do this i wake to find my phone has frozen. This means anyone who has tried to call or txt me during the night hasnt gotten through. The phone rings for them, but at my end the phone just stays blank.
This is the only time my phone freezes (within limits) and the fact it happens every night without fail seems a tad odd.
My old kaiser did the same but iv started to get a tad fed up of this, does it do the same for anyone else? Or does anyone know a way around it?
Im running Dutty's 6.1 hybrid, on UK t-mobile.
cheers guys
How are you charging it?

Is it plugged into a PCs USB port, using a mains charger (if so is it the official one supplied with the device)? Have you tried swapping charging methods (or chargers if you have a spare) to see if the problem goes away? Do you have a spare battery you can swap in?
thanks for the response!
Its an offical HTC charger plugged into the wall, and as far as i can tell charging it via the computer is fine, but then again i dont leave it plugged into the computer for 12 hours.
I dont have second battery to try but the fact that this is a totally new phone & battery and i had this problem with my old phone aswell. iv also swopped the chargers around and it still happens.
are you in wifi mode
Sometimes when I leave the wifi mode on it will freeze, make sure the wifi is off at night. Hope this helps.
Cheers
cheers, wifi is always off though!
Kind of bugging me, especially is id like to use the alarm on my phone, but im too hesitant incase phone freezes & it doesnt go off.
Time to give it an overnight charge from the PC and other tests

The next step then is to restore the phone to an 'as new' state in terms of software/ROM/Radio/spl etc (unless others with the same setup can verify this problem never happens for them) and charge it for the normal period solely via USB from a PC. You mentioned you don't normally recharge the phone this way for long periods but try it for a night or two just to see if this makes a difference. It would also help to rule out power fluctuations as a contributing factor if you could power the PC via a UPS. As this has happened now with 2 phones and 2 mains adapters, its extremely unlikely to be a hardware fault and more likely something associated with the configuration or your neigbourhood power supply. If it locks up most nights, take a note of the time displayed on the phone when that happens - is it the same time on each occasion?
What happens if you leave it on charge while in flight mode with all 'options' such as wifi, bluetooth etc turned off (just for diagnostic purposes)? If you can get it to charge properly without locking up in a basic state, then if you reintroduce any differences one by one and test after each change, you'll find the culprit.

[Q] Charging while powered off

Has anyone managed to charge their HD7 while it's powered off?
As soon as I plug in power mine boots up and if I try to shut it down while charging it boots up again.
Same issue here
Well all my HTC devices did it. HD2, TD2, Orbit, Orbit 2 and so on so on.
It is not an issue, software is controlling charge.
the tp didn't do it .
My Touch HD didn't do it.
My HD2 did NOT do this how ever my HD7 does this lol
I just pluged in my HD2 and it boots up ASAP. If I switch it off it stops charging until I boot it up.
I'm finding this issue really anoying, i like to charge during the night whilst my phone is switched off just like i did with my HD2 every night! Really needs sorting.
Just turn on airplane mode and put it on silent.
I discovered last night that the HD7 won't take charge via USB from a powered-down PC. I know the ports are still powered while the PC is off, as my Touch Pro used to take charge overnight.
Wondering if this is a hardware or software issue -- or some weird anomaly of Micro USB vs Mini USB.
my hd and orbit didnt do it but HD7 does as you saing
This probably has to do with the fact that windows phone 7 will perform a wireless sync with the zune software 10 minutes after being plugged into the charger, so the device needs to be on.

It is supposed to happen, and you can't disable it. Technically, You can't charge any wp7 device while its off.

Cm7 charging screen timeout & charging

Where is the setting to make the nooks screen time out, and turn off while charging? Secondly does anybody have any idea why my tablet has been charging so slowly lately?
Sent from my MOTWX435KT using Tapatalk
i think screen stay on while charging because "charging" is one of the possible SOD cause. That's why there is no options (and it's charging slowly because the screen is on..)
Ok thanks, I thought the sod problem was fixed.

Just press the lock button after you plug it in.

I normally do turn off the screen when I plug it in, but until just this morning the nook would die in my book bag due, to it waking up when the nook button was hit in my book bag. Thanks to somebodies help I rectified that problem this morning, but long story short I would charge it when I would go to bed, and it would be too dead to turn on when I plugged it on, so by the time it was ready to have the screen turned off, I would be asleep. Sorry for the long post.
Before I went to bed last night (11:40-ish), my nc was at 48% charge. This morning I woke up (7:30) and my nook was dead. About an hour later after charging it for a bit, I noticed my screen somehow turned back on and I hadn't even touched it. It seems the screen timeout is broken, or the option screen always on when plugged in is broken, because I double checked to make sure it was off. Btw I'm on Nightly 177
May just be my nc though.

It is not broken, nor is it your nook... this is common just like stock B&N ROM works.
If it is dead when you connect charger... when it gets around 15% it turns on... if it is not dead when you connect charger... it does not go into sleep... you have to manually turn off screen by short pressing power button.
Its availabe under Settings->Applications->Developement->Stay awake
but this never works for me here(unselect above option), my screen will never turn off automatically on CM7 while charging.
It does seem like the nook is charging much slower on CM7, even when the screen is off, I remember it charged fairly quickly on stock, but on CM7 it seems like it takes hours, I have left it charging over night, and it has not charged all the way before. I could be wrong though.

I have the same problem too. Is there a way to resolve it? The reason I'm asking is before I turn my device off and go to bed while leaving it to charge and when I wake up, the device is somehow turned on (I have come to realise that the NC turns on by itself at random while charging) and the screen never goes to sleep which causes my NC not to be recharged even after a whole night.
To actually turn the NC off when charging you have to attach charger... THEN hold the power button in until you get the power menu... select Power Off

Of course I did that. What I'm saying is that my NC still randomly boots up. Sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours.

Mine does that too (turning on while charging from powered off). It is telling you that it is now charged enough to operate. My solution was to not let it run down so far before you charge (below 15%). And don't turn it completely off. Plug it in and just turn the screen off. Then it charges the whole night without turning the screen back on.
I wonder if it would be possible to have the nook color shut back down if it loads into the os or recovery from a charger activation.
With mine as Long as the battery isn't dead when I plug it in, If I turn it off while its plugged in and not move it at all it stays off, but if I move it in any way it turns back on. Don't know why but movement fires it back up when plugged in.

Seems to be a bad connection....same thing happens wirh my nook also...I plug the cable in, put the nook on one of my floor shelves, turn it off, and leave it to charge overnight....then again ANY kind of movement while the cablle is plugged in to charge OR use usb storage makes it disconnect....maybe a bad cable, unfortunately I haven't found them in stores anywhere lately..

How do you guys leave your watch overnight?

So last night I left it on and battery drain wasn't terrible but I don't think it was good either. So I figured since I'm obviously not using it at night, I should turn the always on display off. Don't need it than so what's the point. Then I decided, why not disconnect it from my phone and than just tap the reconnect button in the morning. Wouldn't be an inconvenience at all either. So I'm sure having the display off will help, but not sure about the disconnecting part but still leaving the watch turned on. Anyway, just wanted to hear what you guys all do with your watch at night while you're not using it.
Mine sits on the charger. I don't turn it off or disconnect it from phone. When I wake up, it is fully charged.

I turn the always on display to off and turn flight mode on. However, it would be great if there was a scheduler that did it automagically.

To get the best battery life out of this thing is to charge it at night... Or else you might get oit of juice before the day is over depending on how much notifications you get...

thanks for all the responses. I guess I can just make it a habit of plugging it in at night along with my phone. And if not, definitely turning the screen off and placing it into airplane mode. Cause the watch charges in 2 hours and like 10 min. Tried it out yesterday so it's pretty quick.
Mine easily lasts two days, really only on charge when battery is nearly dead. Sometimes on charge if I decide I'm not going to be wearing it for a bit and there is a charge close by. Takes no time to fully charge and uses even less battery just sitting connected than wearing it while wrist action setting is on
