[Q] Help Me ASAP - Please read and post!! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, ladies and gentlemen, we have a situation here. It seems that Mr Westwood here has decided to accidentally/on purpose install a rom (Axura 2.5) designed for a Samsung Vibrant on his Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000. Naturally, with everything designed for a completely different phone, my Galaxy appears to be bricked, or as i like to call it, f*cked. I cant get past the bootscreen where it starts off grey and fuzzy, and then changes into a Samsung Vibrant boot image.
So, my question is, can i recover my lovely Galaxy or am i going to have to drop it down the toilet and pretend to Virgin that it doesnt work.
N.B. I have tried to access recovery by pressing, power-volumeup-home but it stalls at the boot screen of 'samsiung vibrant' This has happeend to me before and i have been able to revive my phone by pressing volumedown-power-home, but that doesnt work and last time that was with a rom actually designed for the phone. So what to do? Suggestions will be mucho thanko.

Try the Vibrant recovery combination instead. Both volume button + power, or both volume button + plug in usb.

Well what can i say, we are getting closer to un-bricking the phone many say is un-brickable, basically, i managed to get passed the bootscreen by this method to a white fuzzy screen that was impossible to make out, then after 5 seconds, it went back to the boot screen... getting closer i guess.

Go to Download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power) and flash a stock fw via odin.
If you can go to Download mode or Recovery mode, than your phone is fine. Do a search for any other questions

Hi there, i cant get into any settings other than the bootscreen, need help soon or i am just going to break it and send it to virgin with water damage....

Are you decent with electronics? Try searching for homemade factory jig. It's basically a usb connector with a resistor. By changing the resistance of the usb connection, you can boot the phone into download mode.

To be honest, i think the phone is just completely screwed up, i'm just going to water damage it and claim that is the fault, im good with electronics but that seems a little bit too far. Thanks anyway for the help.

You sure your warranty covers water damage? Here at least water damage voids your warranty, since it's in no way a hardware/software defect, user error.

I was gunna say water damage would void a warrenty but .... last summer my daughter threw my digitial camera in the paddling pool (doh) and it was completly dead. Left it to dry for a bit and still dead and sent it in to fujifilm playing dumb. A month later the phone was returned with new pcb and lens result
So try it and see

[Q] ODIN Misuse :P

Hey there guys,
Well i am a proud owner of a Galaxy S GT i9000 and without going into details, i bricked it with a Vibrant Rom.
I cannot access Vibrant Recovery (pwr+ vol up + vol dwn)
SGS Recovery (pwr + vol up + home)
SGS dl mode (pwr + vol down + home)
I have been advised by my friendly android developer to try and un-brick it using odin... okay... am i right in saying that you need dl mode to be able to use odin, can anyone assist me here in getting my Galaxy back to stock, or anything, i actually dont care as long as i can turn it on, but for now it lags at the Vibrant bootscreen.
Cheers guys.
You can't do anything w/o dl mode. You'll have to send it in.
remove the battery and remove sim, wait for at least 15 minutes, put back battery and start again in download mode. as long as you have not changed the bootloader it should work.

That's actually believed to be untrue.. Some of them is believed to unable to get into download mode, for whatever reason..
Those ones can be bricked, and you need a riffbox (or something similar) to fix them probably.

Okay, what is a riffbox and how do i aquire one, it seems that my network provider Virgin AU do not cover accidental damage, if worst comes to the worst i'll have to claim it on home and contents insurance as a broken device or something.
I have no access to dl mode as i flashed a rom made for a Vibrant by accident, would this mean its just completely out of touch.

JIG for recovering
I had the same problem. You have to make a JIG to get to download mode. It works. Cut open the original Samsung micro USB connector and solder af 300K Ohm resistor on to the black wire and the connection in the micro connector marked 4. This means the resistor is between pin 4 and 5. It hardware activates the download mode. turn of the phone and plug it in and it will enter download mode. Remove it and flash using ODIN 1.3.

[RESOLVED] Blank screen after update with Kies (had a voodoo lagfix kernel)

Hi,
I recently bought a GT 9000 device and first thing to do was installing voodoo lagfix.
Yesterday, I tried updating to Froyo via Kies - and now the phone gets stuck up at a blank screen. I do get the colorful "S" logo - but thereafter, nothing on the screen. Both the soft buttons keep glowing.
To make the matters worst, none of the 3-button combos work on my device.
I'm a little lost now.
How should I proceed?
Thanks!
[Update]
Fixed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9739803&postcount=7
you should have disabled lagfix first.....
Are you absolutely sure none of the 3-button methods work ? For download mode, i have to follow exactly this procedure:
- turn off phone (and wait for the final vibrate which indicates its really off. Pull the battery if not sure)
- turn on pressing and holding volume-up, home and power in that order
- wait till the Samsung GT9000 logo appears for the second time
- release power, home, volume up in that particular order
Once in download mode, you can flash Voodoo again via Odin and it will work again.
If you cant get into download mode, you'll have to solder a special usb plug to get into download mode, or bring your phone in for repair. This is why there are warnings everywhere to only proceed lagfixing & stuff if the 3-button combo works...

Hi pwhooftman,
I really wish that I would have read the docs completely. Anyways, its too late now - only thing to do is to learn from this mistake.
None of the three button combos work on my phone, have tried them several times.
I've spoken to the Sammy reps, will be taking in my phone for a repair.
The special USB plug sounds very interesting but I'm not too interested in hacking hardware on just a week old phone
Your reply is much appreciated
Thanks!
Hi,
You wont have to hack the phone itself for the special USB ' JIG' as its called. The jig can be a micro usb plug or cable which you open up and connect 2 pins with the right kind of resistor. That will make the i9000 go into download or recovery mode. The repair center will probably use the same thing. You can make the jig yourself if your good in electronics and have resistors lying around, otherwise it's a trip to the repair center like you plan to do.
Onto researching about the JIG then! )
Here it is...

Good news! My story has a happy ending!
1) Took my phone to a local mobile repair shop, and he managed to REALLY brick my phone! (Only the phone-!-pc icon came on screen)
2) Asked him to put the phone into download mode
3) Brought the phone back home while it was still in download mode
4) Fired up Odin and followed the process from http://www.pathikshah.com/blog/install-android-2-2-froyo-galaxy-s/
5) Now I have a perfectly fine Froyo build on my device
6) Data saved on my internal SD card is still there )
Next things...
1) Make a homemade JIG
2) Make sure to get the 3 button combo working on my phone!
I found this post while looking for samsung usb jig new delhi
Did your local guy have a jig? I am in GK and with a samsung captivate in a semi-bricked situation
Cheers

[Q] Boot Brick

Okay I was using odin one click it was at rebooting device after it completed pushing stock onto the phone thats when I discounted the usb.... should have waited two secs I know but now the phone doesn't seem to get past the att world phone screen keeps looping over and over I have tried all the key combos different times and ways, vol up and down being held doesn't get to download mode the screen remains black plunging in seems to get to charge mode where even plunging into the wall charger it loops trying to calculate the battery status... any method I haven't tried... I did get it to boot once full and was usable didn't think to redo odin at the time and restarted back to this mess...tried three different jigs using the 100k 5% X3 even through its not a full brick due to the button combos gotten no where. Please Help
Search the forum to build a jig in order to get into download mode. Or you may need to buy one just in case in the future.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...69977&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_623wt_1139
Try this:
Open Odin and plug your cable into your computer but not your phone yet
Pull battery on phone and put it back in
Hold both volume buttons down and then plug your phone in
It should go into download made and you can reflash the stock ROM
Can anyone please help, i have the exact same problem. No matter how i try to enter download mode, it just gives me a charging sign and when i start my phone, it goes into an infinite boot loop.
Try this:
1. Remove battery from phone, SIM card and MicroSD card (if you have one)
2. Wait AT LEAST 10 seconds with your phone in this state
3. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go
4. While holding the volume keys, insert the battery
If this worked, you should be in Download Mode almost instantly.
There are a lot of key combos for Download Mode, this is just one of them. If all the button combos don't work, you need to build/buy a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode.

Ahah Thats the same exact steps I was able to get the phone to boot that one time instead of the up down I was still attempting it to get past the loop holding the power button instead using those steps, if I had know it would have been one of the only times I would see it in there I would have pushed it to download with adb though...
can't test getting it to download mode now took it back fit the description of the standing on/off issue with the device still honored by warranty. And I wouldn't have posted without searching everywhere to make a jig, I made three of them though I noticed it still didn't get to download mode. I made sure that the last two jigs were done correct. Think that when it was disconnected from odin it wasn't done finalizing after the stock push gah >,< live and learn and do something else to the cappies XD.
Thanks for the link placing an order just in-case ~whistles looking around then side to side pushes another rom~ lalala
To offer my own advice if it ever happens again, what I've been able to do is:
1. Pull the battery out
2. Put it back in
3. Open Odin
4. Hold Both Volume Buttons (without holding the power button)
5. Plug the phone back in
It went immediately into download mode for me, Odin managed to time out several times while I was trying to flash a co-worker's Captivate to the official Froyo leak. One of those times I couldn't even get the phone to come up with any screen. I really do think this thing cannot be bricked.
BeowulfShaeffer said:
That has been my experience so far, too. I've "bricked" twice, once with an "all black" screen, and once with the phone-!-computer screen. I've yet to need a jig, though I thought I may have needed it last night when I got the "all black" screen.
Keep trying the different button press methods to get into download mode. It took me 4 attempts to get from "all black" to "phone-!-computer" to a happy robot digging away.

Ive used odin before changing roms and have gotten to download mode with combos on my last cappy before that night (dramatic music) en ways..
did some more digging on this bad ass info and learning community "XDA" hehe as to how it got the way it did, I found out I was updated with the new patch when I sent it for screen change to this shop, so...using odin one click with this creates a hang time to where it looked like it was finished after pushing jh6 (which was totally off should have used odin 3 and pushed jh2 then clockwork update to jh7) so thats when I disconnected (second noob mistake of the situation) basically blowing the finalization out and key combs for recovery and download mode. and im guessing the jig was made wrong too at this point >,<.
Oh

If you cant get your jig to work take it in to warranty (if your water inicators are sound and no physical damage) and say its power cycling on off at random times (which is true.. ) and it did it when you were sync to mini kies, did it an hour after the OP heh good luck
and I have yet to see the infamous yellow pc sign >,> <,< it can stay on the yellow brick road... thanks for the responses btw
Well the same thing happened to me and i got stuck with in an unlimited boot animation. Ive trying everything key combo possible and ive tried a jig but it just makes it reboot, and yes im sure im touching the right pins. If anybody can help with this dilemma i would really appreciate it. I want to return with warranty but my phone has a custom boot animation so im sure att probably wont accept it if they notice it.

Purchase jig from ebay, or google and try igo jig.
If your phone is turning on with jig you are not touching the right prongs. I know, I know it is not easy, but unless it if touching just right, it can turn your phone on.
Holy ******** i got it to download mode! For some reason i kept touching the same pins and nothing would happen. After about readjusting for about 5mn it finally worked!!!!
It has to be just so. Happy to hear

That happens try a different usb port or just borrow someone else computer, I used my networking classes computer my laptop was doing the same thing when I was change roms.
Changed the title to fit the issue, this is not a soft brick this is a boot brick that can affect the charge indicator in power off state as well. So whats the difference the soft brick is when you flash a rom incorrectly and you get the att world screen constantly staying on, the key combinations still work when the phone is like this.. in the case with a boot brick the att screen cycles over and over and the jig may or may not work I haven't been able to fully test it here in this state I have seen a packager attempt to finish once on the recent one but all the key combos I could find didn't function my noob guess is the phone forgot how to ride a bike (meaning is hasn't connected keys to recovery that was being flashed or hardware to there states without being booted normally) ultimate fix is if its in warranty (meaning no physical damage or water) take it back for power on off. the soft brick i've seen before and have fixed with odin 2-3 three times, and ive seen a blown kernel type too where keys and odin fix up like new.

Have a link to which one you have? It sounds like the solder points on the jig were a little weak. This can happen if they aren't good welds. If you want give one of mine a shot. I'll refund you if it reboots your phone...
Buy one HERE...
I had a boot brick happen to me just the other day. I was running Andromeda 1.1 with stock kernel & modem, and tried to tinker with swapping the AT&T boot screen using connexion2005's video on the subject (NOT insinuating any blame at all, his videos are fantastic).
I tested it successfully the first time, then flashed back the i9000_param_lfs, and pushed a new image to the device again (everything was exactly the same, with the exception of the boot_screen.bat script not making the phone ask for superuser approval while pushing the new logo_ATNT), and everything looked ok.
Reboot device, and...boink.
Black screen, no image at all on power on, only charging screen when usb cable connected. ADB, nothing. 3 button, nothing. Vol up+down, remove battery, insert usb cable, do hokey pokey, nothing. 5 attempts at the 100k resistor jig, for hours, nothing. No download, no recovery. Seems like the phone was toast.
Strange how I had just done this successfully earlier in the day, to now having it completely hard brick this phone.
I ended up taking the phone back to a local warranty center, and they swapped it (1008) for a 1010 (gps works fantastic on this one, btw)...I just hope there's no bill coming if they find out it was rooted and flashed. *crosses fingers and uses any and all karma*
Any ideas what happened? Did I scramble this things boot loader? I've heard how hard it is to fully brick this phone, and looks like I succeeded. How lucky.
I'd just like to know what went wrong so when I (or anyone else) root and flash next time, the chances of this happening are reduced (or better understood).
Thanks

[Q] unbrick galaxy mini?

so i rooted my phone installed rom manager and flashed something like colckwork rom of hawai mini i switched of my mobile.Today in morning when i tried to tun it on it wont only a black screen no sound no logo no vibration I even tried to remove and insert battery but no luck.I think its a hard brick i got this mobile on 28 feb 2011 and it is still under 1 year warrenty of samsung so can i get a new mobile in place of it or just recover it.(I have the UK system here noot of USA)
can you tell me any way to unbrick it any any one
I have done something similar to my Samsung Vibrant. Rooted and was in process of installing new ROM when on restart got a screen that has Vibrant at the top of screen and Samsung on the bottom of screen then a blank black screen and then goen into a vibrating loop of single vibrate and then another single vibrate and then a triple vibrate and then it starts the loop over again. The only thing I can do is pull the battery to stop it. Anyone know of any thing I can do to correct this or to revert the ROM or anything?
Thank you
Larry
Take it to T-Mobile and say when you turned it on it was like this and they might send it off to be replaced.
i hate those people who wanna pay their insurance for their silly things and fails!

so guys i live in india here it is called galaxy pop i went to samsung service center and there they replaced my motherboard for free cause it was still in warranty .I will get it next tuesday
I have this model, too. But it is called GT-S5570. It works fine, but i bought it network lock. Have you succeded unlock it?
Had the same, the solution is simple:
Download the newest firmware at samfirmware.com
Use Odin Multi Downloader to upload the firmware to your mobile
(mobile needs to be in download mode, this should still work. Try volume down + home + power)
Just upload the clean firmware and it should be done. The complete guide is placed on the same website on the download page.

I swear you will have a problem with your phone, and no solution. Really I wish you that.
For other people who has this problem, don't worry, your phone is frozen, so they can't diagnose it. Just say you was syncronizing with Kies, and it happend the phone turned off and that's impossible to restart it. They'll just give you a new one or repair it.
HI
try these ways
it works with my galaxy s
Hold down Vol UP+Vol Down+Power, the screen will flash black, continue holding down all 3 buttons, you will see the "phone--!--PC" screen again, continue holding all 3 buttons, the screen will flash black again, release the power button only. This will put you into Download Mode.
If this does not work, open odin. Then connect your usb cable to your phone and computer. While the USB is plugged in and Odin running press and hold volume down + Home + Power. Once the black screen comes (flashes) release the Power Button. It should get into download mode.
Additionally it is possible to get into the Download Mode using a kind of micro-usb connector,
the last thing u can try is the jigs

So i installed it(like an idiot).
Then i tried to install clockwork mode (smthg like that from rom manager) and boom!Everything went black.
I tried to go into recovery mode, download mode NOTHING.
I tried to a lot of things but nothing is working.
Odin recognises my phone when i use volume up+home+end! But it stucks on setup.Again tried to do it in that way but still nothing.
Last i tried that jig thing.I bought 3x100k ohm resistors and do it like he says(that video from youtube) BUT STILL NOTHING.
I dont know what to do!
I would be gratefull if some1 could give me an advice to make it to turn on!
Tyyy.
This is exactly what happened to me too. Did Service centre repair it for free ? What did you tell them ? Please help. ITs urgent/ Bricked black screen.

This!!!
rooted phone!! installed Titanium Backup pro, rom-manager (though i didnt use it).
First i removed yahoofinance.apk thingy... it went black but recovered to charging mode (battery charging screen)... odd i thought.. and (like a idiot) booted up and removed livebackground forest thingy... now!
Pitch black, no state of recovery.
Just thist:
Vol up, home and power button. makes it visible to windows and odin.. KIES failes to connect it...
Its almost like... i got one first warning.. and then samsung decided to **** me!
is it somekind of "security lock"?, its not like i removed the kernel.
EDIT: so.. im messing around... The only thing that one really gets comunication with is the modem circuits, so it looks that way... But then what do i know...
ODIN connects to the same com-port as the samsung modem reports having in device manager!, so i asume this is unit it uses to when transfering the data, flashing.
Other: i get some different behaviors... etc, i would use "volup, home and power" to make it visible in win and then i could just use the power button to get the connection on and off (or rather reset! since i just one time got it to actually stay disconnected).
Now on the other hand i cant use the just the "Vol up" button combo, i have to press both Vol up and down with pwr and home to get it to connect with drivers and show up in ODIN etc..
In some cases u have to have battery unpluged and show it in while holding button combo and sometimes u dont..
I cant make out anything out of this, but maby some of u guys can!?
Rom Manager screwed your phone. Not uninstalling forest wallpaper.
I got my phone hard bricked because of ROM manager. I have given it to the service center. Waiting for them to fix it.

If the phone is hard bricked (no download mode, no battery charge indicator when power plugged in), you really do not have a choice.
While people claim to be able to use jtag / USB jig (see the only thread started by me in the accesories section of this miniforum), I do not have clear answers in that thread.

[Q] (Q) Stuck on AT&T World Home Phone with custom Rom

Hey guys,
This is another HELP! post, I recently tried to install the O B S S E S S I O N custom rom. I have installed serendipity before and never had a problem with it. I reverted back to the factory reset and everything appeared ok. Well, I got to the point where I installed the new rom and when it reboots, all I see is the "AT&T World Phone." The sound from the Galaxy S screen plays but it just stays on that same AT&T screen. I was going to go into downloading mode and do the Odin reset but the phone will no longer go into downloading mode. I'm just not sure what to do at this point, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Take out the battery SD and sim connect your phone to the computer and press Vol +- and insert battery. There are a few more key combos (depending on what Bootloaders you have) if none of them work i suggest getting a Jig. You can buy them in Ebay or Mobiletechvideos. You can make one alot faster and probably cheaper with this guide. Even if you are able to get in to down load mode its always a good idea to make/buy a jig to have around.
Thanks, I've tried to get it into download mode the way you described and it just does not want to do it. I had to buy a new Captivate yesterday, so I will probably just bring it back to the store and exchange it with another one, and just claim ignorance to the issue lol
I stand by the Jig though, anyone modding their captivate or any SGS should have a jig around.

This is true, but you have to hold vol up/vol down BEFORE you insert usb lol. I had the same issue. ended up being kernel was the problem. I was able to get into dl mode with vol up/down insert just fine, though. Like Bassplayer said, get a JIG it's like cheap insurance. Not full coverage, but it isn't going to leave you stranded either
Yeah I saw the Jigs are only $8, I am definitely going to be purchasing one tonight just to have it in case

The other way to do it is while your battery and sdcard and chip are out plug in the usb, then hit the vol up/down buttons, followed by placing your battery in while still holding the buttons.

This method does work, I had a <PC+PHONE> screen yesterday after a failed bootloader install and this did the trick, got me right back into download mode .
