i flashed a clean xxjpo stock rom before I flashed the speedmod. After that I applied the z4mod and installed the sgs tools to apply the better TouchWizUI and so on. Finally I installed my usual apps like also busybox and rom manager. Everything was working fine. Today i started my rom manager and rom manager wanted me to install cwm. I did that and wanted to boot into it. The phone was not starting anymore.
The question I actuaally have is what I did wrong. Am I not allowed to install and apply CWM? Was the patched z4mod kernel the problem?
If someone would know what might be the problem I could save much time by testing it.

hey all,
I have experimented with quite a few ROMs now and I wanted to try Doc's and Stefunels new kitchen.
I customized and installed the latest JS3 ROM without issue. However went I went to make a CWR backup, it booted into recovery mode, but it had somehow reverted back to 3e.
TO be clear, I had 2e obviously before i tried to make the CWR backup, else I would not have been able to flash Doc's Rom right? At least thats the way i understand it.
I tried to flash the speedmod kernel again using the SGS kernel flasher from within android but it didn't work. Eroor message: kernel flash failed.
I am quite pleased with the ROM in all other respects, looks good, fast etc.
I want to return to the 2e recovery, preferably without losing data. How would i go about doing that?

What kernel did you choose?
i chose hardcore's speedmod k12p 500hz.
update: Because I dont have a windows computer and heimdall has issues on snow leopard 10.5.8, i finally compiled from source heimdall on my linux laptop. I was able to flash both the speedmod kernel and lastufo's 4.6.8 kernel successfully.
Still, however, wehn i get to recovery mode, I have 3e and not 2e.
I am still rooted and I have RomManager installed on my phone.
Anyone know what is going on?
Can i use rom manager two install darky's extreme rom instead of useing recovery mode,Thank's for all your help

There is some issue of galaxy s i9000 not having a stock 2e recovery. so we ll have to install a 2e recovery from some where. How to do that..
Also, do we need to undo the one click lag fix before flashing a custom rom?

Depends. If you are using a lagfix (conversion to jfs for instance) and you are going for a ROM based on a Kernel that doesn't recognize this kind of File System, then you are probably gonna have some isuues.
By the way, no, you won't have to do any rooting again, since CF Root kernel is already rooted

Thanks. Hey i have rooted using the RyanZ Z4root. how to find out whether i will require to install the 2e recovery while using Rom manager for putting on the darky' Rom extreme.
OK, so you are on a root-ed device, without any lagfix on, right?
If that's true, then you have many ways of installing Darky's Rom even if you don't have recovery 2e.
You could use Darky's ROM Configurator (found on market),make your selections and then download this and install it, just like you would with ROM Manager.
My Recommendation:
You could also download an ODIN version of Darky's ROM - BASE ROM, so that you won't have to mess with recovery 3e, and then apply Darky's "FULL" ROM, through recovery 2e.
Once Darky's ROM is installed, recovery 3e will be replaced by 2e
By the way, if not sure about whether you have a lagfix activated or not, I suggest that you choose to install Speedmod's kernel, through Darky's ROM configurator.

Hey all. I hope my experience trying to get ROM Manager and CWM working under AT&T's official FROYO 2.2 update will keep someone from throwing their Captivate against the wall.
Here is the sequence I used. I admit it is kinda convoluted, but it did finally work and I can get to the CWM boot menu. This assumes you follow the instructions associated with each individual step.
1. Blast the phone back to 2.1 with [STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY
2. Run the Kies Mini update from Samsung/AT&T to get the Official FROYO build.
3. Only run Shell Root with [APP]SuperOneClick v1.7 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App)
4. Run the recovery 3e modified to work like recovery 2e - Updated 01/23/2011
(You know this worked if when you boot to Recovery mode you see a line that says, checksum confirmation need_checksum[0], shows up.)
5. Reboot!!!
6. Run the SuperOneClick v1.7 and choose Root then Enable Non-Market Apps. Use the psneuter radio button.
7. Reboot!!!
8. Delete any update.zip on the internal SD.
9. Go to the Market and install ROM Manager.
10. Run ROM Manager, let it d/l and install CWM. It should ask for SU permissions. If it doesn't you probably forgot to reboot.
11. Use ROM Manager to Reboot into Recovery.
12. Choose reinstall packages from the BLUE recovery menu. You will have to do this TWICE and then the GREEN CWM Recovery menu should appear.
Now you can use ROM Manager/CWM to do full backups which was the reason why I wanted to get it to work as I'm still leary about how well Titanium Backup works and coming from the IT world I love imaging.
UPDATE
OK I just installed [KERNEL] stock+Voodoo stable 5.x for Captivate and it worked fine. Bobapunk's steps should work fine but I haven't followed his steps.

Well it seemed to work fine, but it gave errors reading cache files and I could no longer install apps off the Market. Doing a Master Clear atm and will try Boba's order.
UPDATE 3
Seems to have been an error with partitioning. Back to 2.1, Kies to 2.2, Odin3 1.81 to PDA the Kernel, then repartition and format ALL partitions (had to do this to format BOOT). Then back to 2.1, Kies to 2.2, OneClick to root, Odin3 1.81 to PDA kernel. Now I can have fun getting rid of the bloatware and I might install plumbBob's GPS fix.
UPDATE 4
Everything is working fine now. Did [FIX] PlumbBob GPS Fix 1.0 [UPDATE 3/10/2011] and the GPS locks on in about 5 seconds in LBSTestMode, but Google Maps/Navigation still seems to lose lock often. Using Captivate SGS Tools and recommend it highly.
UPDATE 5
Works beautifully except for Messaging does an FC on boot. Doesn't seem to matter and I'm not a big texter and it does work afterward. One of the system apps I uninstalled with TB must be tied in to it. Not sure which one and my week at home is up. Disable media scanning in SGS Tools doesn't work, but Rescan Media ROOT (search the Market) does.

I am glad that you got this figured out. I accomplished this a little differently.
I had AT&T 2.1 rooted
I upgraded to 2.2 via Kies
I rooted with Super One Click
I flashed Supercurio's Kb1+ Voodoo Kernel
I flashed CWM Recovery with ROM Manager
This worked fine on my 1009 build captivare. It seems simpler than your process and you get Voodoo along with CWM Recovery.
Well I'm trying to keep it as stock as possible. Next step will be to use TB to get rid of the AT&T bloatware. I haven't decided if I will use the Voodoo lagfix or not as it makes a radical filesystem change and some posts have warned about flashing new ROMS to it's FS and ending up with expensive paperweights.
BTW didn't you have to go back to the stock (i.e. unrooted) ROM to get Kies to perform the update?

I used Kies mini to upgrade to 2.2, then rooted, installed Rom Manager, and Titanium Backup, TB works well, but Rom Manager wont reboot in recovery and go to green...always stays in blue...error messages when I reinstall pkgs..so...reading your fix, if I was to be able to flash Supercurio Kb1+ Voodoo Kernel, should I be able to get to the green in Rom Manager?...what is CWM Recovery?...and what about that update file in my sd...delete?..or keep it?

I currently have ClockworkMod 2.5 and am trying to upgrade to 3 to install CM&. I currently have Doc's ROM, if that makes any difference.
ROM Manager doesn't give me any options to update to v3.
The CM7 wiki has steps to update for non-rooted users, but I don't think I need to do that.
I am looking for a CWM download to install via Odin. Is this the simplest method?
I've searched this forum as well as the web, and I can't find anything related to the Vibrant.
Any tips would be appreciated...

Have you tried using ROM Manager and selecting Flash Clockwork Recovery?
For me it asked me what phone I was using (select Galaxy S MTD if you want to use CM7) and then asked what version of CMW I wanted. Just choose CWM3.x there and you should be fine. It will tell you that your current phone isn't supported, blah blah, but ignore it.
I'm sure he's going to install CM7, not already installed. Just use speedmod kernel. There's no need for CWM 3. If you got CM7 installed, it's automatically CWM 3.

Actually it is not completely automatic, you still need to flash a CWM3 recovery from inside ROM Manager, otherwise you can't see CM7 Nightlies from ROM Manager.

I was able to get CM7 on my Bell Galaxy S.
I did try the ROM Manager but I couldn't get it to update CWM. It would try to install from Android recovery 3e, not CWM.
After many loops of stock 2.3.3, Doc's ROM 2.2.1, CM7 Nightly 15, and other steps, I was able to manually flash the nightly 18 using CWM.
For some reason, the update method for stock mentioned on the CM7 Galaxy S didn't work for me. Even after flashing speedmod kernel, I still came up with CWM 2.5.
Also, even with CWM 2.5, I was able to flash nightly build 18. Hope this helps someone else trying to update CWM.
UK Samsung Note GT N7000 just upgrade to 4.0.4 N7000XXLRK... everything went fine, found the speed has increased and the battery life is way better than the original rom....
But there is the problem... I made a total backup using CWM before I flashed, but now I'm in 4.0.4 I cant install Titanium Backup nor CWM. to retreave the backup info.. I installed Rom Manager and try to install clockwork through that it download and installed, but nothing else happens,found out Samsung note not supported...... I really need to get CWM installed I have searched the net but very little is coming forward..
The more advanced were getting the further back were going, I may have no chance but to go back to Gingerbread

Well it seems to me that you flashed a rom without Root / custom kernel...
The only way in my eyes is to flash a Kernel with CWM via Odin.

My phone was rooted before, and after the new flash its still rooted, I have just been told to check out "emmc bug" program from play store.. it seem that I have a dodgy chip... I have root checker basic that say I have root access, So its not that I installed a rom without this is what i installed N7000XXLRK_N7000XXLRK_N7000ORALP2_HOME.tar.md5... after reading a little about the EMMC BUG im not so sure I want it now, shame....

Look for lrk kernel. Download the zip version, place it on ext sd card and flash it from stock recovery. Or install mobile odin and flash hydracore or speedmod
