Windows Phone 7 Secure Digital Card Limitations - HD7 General

This article provides information to help you understand how Windows Phone 7 devices use SD cards, the performance requirements of SD cards for Windows Phone 7 devices, and how your phone will behave if you remove the SD card or add a new one.
Some Windows Phone 7 devices include a Secure Digital (SD) card slot underneath the battery cover. If you buy a Windows Phone 7 device that includes an SD card slot, you should be aware of several important differences from other devices that use SD cards:
* The SD card slot in your phone is intended to be used only by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) that built your phone and your Mobile Operator (MO). These partners can add an SD card to this slot to expand the amount of storage on your phone.
* To help ensure a great user experience, Microsoft has performed exhaustive testing to determine which SD cards perform well with Windows Phone 7 devices. Microsoft has worked closely with OEMs and MOs to ensure that they only add these cards to Windows Phone 7 devices.
* You should not remove the SD card in your phone or add a new one because your Windows Phone 7 device might not work properly. Existing data on the phone will be lost, and the SD card in your phone can't be used in other Windows Phones, PCs, or other devices.
Understanding How Windows Phone 7 Devices Use SD Cards
If your Windows Phone 7 device contains an SD card, you should think of it as a permanent component of your phone, not as removable storage. The Windows Phone 7 operating system treats the SD card as an integrated part of the phone. This is in contrast to other devices, where you can use an SD card to increase the memory available to the device at any time or to transfer files to other devices. The phone’s operating system integrates the SD card with the phone:
* When you start your phone for the first time.
* When your phone is reset to its original factory settings. This is called a factory reset. This is a task that is typically only performed by OEMs or MOs.
When the operating system integrates the SD card with your phone:
1. It reformats the SD card.
2. It creates a single file system that spans the internal storage and the SD card.
3. It locks the card to the phone with an automatically generated key.
From this point on, the phone’s operating system uses all of the available memory as a single storage space for storing applications and data. The phone will stop working properly if you remove the SD card, and the SD card cannot be read by another phone, device, or PC.
Performance Requirements for SD Cards
The SD card in a Windows Phone 7 device must meet certain performance requirements for the phone to function optimally. If the SD card does not meet these performance requirements, the phone will have portions of memory that meet the performance needs of the operating system (the internal storage) and portions of memory that do not meet the needs of the operating system (the SD card). This can lead to poor and unpredictable performance when using the phone. This article uses the term Windows Phone 7 compliant to refer to SD cards that meet the performance requirements for Windows Phone 7 devices.
Determining whether an SD card is Windows Phone 7 compliant is not a simple matter of judging its speed class. Several other factors, such as the number of random read/write operations per second, play a role in determining how well an SD card performs with Windows Phone 7 devices.
What to Expect if You Modify the SD Card Slot in a Windows Phone 7 Device
You may experience the following issues if you remove or replace the SD card in a Windows Phone 7 device, or if you add an SD card to a Windows Phone 7 device that has an empty SD card slot.
* Removing the SD Card: If you remove an SD card that has already been integrated with the phone, the phone displays an error message that tells you to reinsert the SD card. All phone functionality is disabled except for the ability to make emergency calls. The phone will function normally again only if you reinsert the original SD card and then start the phone.
* Integrating a Phone with a non–Windows Phone 7 Compliant SD Card: If a non–Windows Phone 7 compliant card is integrated with the phone, you might notice the following performance issues when you use your phone:
o Applications might start more slowly or not at all.
o Transitions between some application screens might stutter.
o Some applications might not respond at times.
Note
In some cases, these performance issues might only be evident after using the phone for some time. For example, if your phone has 8 GB of internal memory and you integrate a non-compliant SD card with the phone, you might notice the performance issues only after the 8 GB of internal memory is filled with applications and media.
* Integrating a Phone with a Different Windows Phone 7 Compliant SD Card: If your phone already has an SD card and then a different Windows Phone 7 compliant card is integrated with the phone, you will lose any data that was stored on the phone, including any applications that you installed from the Marketplace hub. Examples of data that might be stored on the SD card include manually linked contacts, start customizations, and data that applications do not store remotely.
* Adding an SD Card to a Phone with an Empty SD Card Slot: If you purchase a Windows Phone 7 device with an empty SD card slot and you add an SD card to the phone after you start it for the first time, the phone will continue to work properly, but it will not recognize the SD card. The phone will not save applications or files to the SD card.
To use an SD card with the phone, a Windows Phone7 compliant card must be integrated with the phone in one of the scenarios described above in the section Understanding How Windows Phone 7 Devices Use SD Cards.

Tilt corrupt files

I have an ATT Tilt that I'm still running WM 5 on. (Correction: it is actually WM 6) I am having some trouble with some corrupt files showing up on my memory card. I went so far as to buy a new memory card and removed several 3rd party apps that I had installed. Even after this, the files returned on the new card. I cannot access or delete them. I cannot tell which files are being corrupted, I assume they are program and documents that should be otherwise usable. The file names show up as a series of squares, other odd shapes, numbers and letters.
Some of the 3rd party apps I am using are
Total Commander
WMWifiRouter (added after this problem started)
Google Maps and Mobile Apps
Opera Mini
I haven't made any alterations to ROM or anything else.
Any help would be appreciated on how to proceed in clearing this up. One app that I notice is affected is "Notes". I have lost some data that I had saved in that.
Thanks!
How did you get windows mobile 5 on it?
I have the same problem from time to time. There is no real fix that I have found. What I think is happening is, the phone is reading/writing to the memory card, and either it stops (beause you put the phone to sleep, or soft reset it) or some other method. Since the file was never closed/finished correctly, it gets curroped. I strongly recommend backing up your SD card every month or 2. That way, when things do crash, you do not lose all your files.
Last time it crashed. I hard reset the phone, and re-formated the sd card in my PC. It has been 3 months and so far no problems. Maybe you can try that...
Oops my mistake I have WM 6
CE OS 5.c.1622
Sorry
other things to check or try changing include:
1. the brand of the micro sd card
2. any power saving settings that might be getting applied to the micro sd card (in my opinion, power saving settings are notorious for such behavior and my advice is to just disable any power saving settings for the micro sd card/slot)
3. your usage habits regarding closing programs. my recommendation is to CLOSE programs (as opposed to MINIMIZING them to the background) when you are done using them.
4. how/when you remove the card from the device (if you ever do) and/or how you remove the card from your desktop/laptop (if you occasionally use a card reader). on your desktop/laptop, it is advised to "Safely remove hardware" before physically removing the card from the card reader. on your device, it is advised to close all programs that might be accessing files from the card, wait a few seconds, and then remove the card. most people will suggest shutting down the device before removing the card but it is my understanding that the card slots in the kaiser are indeed hot swappable (i've been using it that way for almost 2 years and have never experienced any issues with my 8GB sandisk).
5. getting a card reader is highly recommended, especially if you want to try to recover lost data or to repair the file system on the card. as a bonus, the card reader will also allow nearly 5 to 10 times faster read/write access when transferring files onto/off the card from your desktop/laptop as compared to activesync via usb sync cable.
6. avoid setting your programs to use the card as "cache". example, some people like to set their browsers' cache folders to the storage card. this can also cause file system errors in some rare and remote scenarios.
all these portable devices (phones, digital cameras, mp3 players) use the fragile FAT32 format as their file system but i've always hoped that M$ would some day provide an alternative file system (something like NTFS without its security features perhaps to keep things simple for the pda phone), but alas that day has yet to come!
Try copying all your files to your computer (in case something happens)and run an error check from your PC with a card reader. Right click on the card in Windows Explorer (if you have Windows), choose Properties, then choose the Tools tab, then click Error Check, and run the check.
had the same problem, lost all my programs. I copied a very old back up over to the card . once I had done that the original files reappeared.

Micro Sd Card Slot
Hi, I no some windows phone 7, phone have micro sd card slots but it was not confirmed that the HD7 has it. Do you know anything??
I believe it won't come with and SD Card slot.
You can't use your own SD cards with Windows Phone 7. So even if the Phones have something like a reachable slot, it's only made so OEMs can equip the phone with larger pre-built cards.

Not true. WP7 phones equipped with a SD card slot can be upgraded to a bigger card. BUT you will need to hard reset the phone in order to get the new card recognised.
There are several sites out there reporting this.
http://wmpoweruser.com/htc-hd7-microsd-slot-exposed/
there seems to be a card slot under the bit of plastic on the back - the lower half of the battery cover section, the part with hd7 and windows phone written on it - but you need to take out a bunch of screws and one of them has a void sticker on it - so guessing it voids the warranty if you do
A little warning :
after you upgraded your phone with a new sd card you can't use that card any-more ad this time (your pc won't recognize it and you can not format it to )

[Q] download files directly to sd card?

Tried to download some files but I had to download it to phone's internal memory and then move it to sd card, since the phone doesn't allow to write to sd card.
and another problem, I bought an sdxc 64gb sd card. there's another way to transfer files from my pc to sd card in fast speed? should be like 40+ mb/s and it's transfering files around 4 mb/s, guess it's the lack of usb 3.0 port on the phone.
any faster way other than buying a usb 3.0 card reader?
airdroid and another wireless methods didn't work for me.
Thank you guys.
You're limited to what the phones USB controller allows you to communicate with it, and I suppose it used MTP anyway which is utter crap and slow.
As for downloading directly to SD card, it's impossible because Google put SD-card access limitations in it since KitKat. No worries however since Android L should re-enable those permissions again. (Apps now can only save in their own specific directory on the SD card in /sdcard1/Android/data/com.vendor.appname, so you better wait a while. If you absolutely need to move things between your SD card and internal memory to your own folders, the built-in File Commander has permissions to access your SD card fully.
You can d load files directly to your SD Card.
Settings> Xperia Connectivity > USB Connectivity> Wireless Media Transfer
You'll probably need to install the PC Companion software, and make sure that your screen time-out/stamina is off while it pairs for the first time, but then you can d/load files to your SD card.

tried that, it gets stuck and if I unplug the phone it says something about firewall and upnp, tried to disable the firewall and still the same.
No, it doesn't stick, it just takes a *very long time* to pair (once it is, it's fine) and you MUST make sure your display doesn't time out or Stamina mode kick in during the process

will give it one more try.
Thank you.
edit: it works but still slow, will consider buying a usb 3.0 card reader.

Another question, sorry for quoting you.
Tried to transfer some music, movies and tv series to the sd card. With teracopy everything seems ok.
After disconnecting the phone from pc either the music won't show or the movies, or tv series.
Befor I unplug the phone all the files appear but after I'm unplugging the phone it won't show the files on yhe phone and on the pc either.
Could it be a damaged sd card or it may cause by using exfat format? Couldn't find a way to format into fat32 format.
Any suggestions?
Are you sure the apps you are using to play/view let you into the SD Card?
I have several thousand songs and some movies on my SD Card and they are viewable from my apps.
The best way to format your SD Card would be from the phone itself if you want to guarantee the phone recognising the contents. I believe you use Settings > Storage > Erase SD card (My understanding is that it will format the SDCard too) write speed will be determined by the SD Card too, is it a high speed card? I also find that if you try and write multiple files, it slows down everything hugely, so I tend to do files singly (in the case of movies) and in smallish batches if music.
If you're using wi-fi, the speed of the network/distance from the router will play a part too

The item has been removed from ebay so here is some details but not the model number
64GB SanDisk Extreme Micro SDXC Memory Card Class 10 - 45MB/s UHS-I U1
Formatting it through the phone makes it exfat.
And yes I'm sure it's the external sd card.
But how is it possible that the sd card is full, I unplug it and plug it again and the folders are there but they are empty, plus no matter what is the size of the files that I transfer I have like 4-6 free gb's, there should be like 40 free gb's after the size of the files that I transferred.
You should consider that perhaps you got a cheap copy card and it's not working at the speed it should be, there are card speed apps on Android Market that should be able to tell you how fast its working. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a1dev.sdbench&hl=en

Yes, it's a fake for sure.
About 2-3 mb/s reand and write.
Since the item removed from ebay I can't open a dispute. Hope PayPal will refund me.
If nothing else, at least we've worked out the problem
Not sure if this was already solved.
If you go on Camera, Settings, "Data Storage" change to SD Card.
Erasing the SD card from the phone seems to work more efficiently to provide you the confidence of starting from scratch.
Now everytime I take pictures or Videos, it is transferred straight to my SD Card.
Hope this helps for some that is still having some difficulties with the topic.

Marshmallow, SD Cards, App Data storage

I feel like I'm missing something. I recently upgraded to Marshmallow on my 8gb Moto G (2014). I saw the stuff about the adopted SD so I thought I'd try it with my 16gb card. I did this and then I found that Google Play and Pocket Casts, my two big data apps, are impossible to move to adopted storage. My internal storage filled up pretty much instantly with music and podcasts. Since my SD card is encrypted I can't just drop my music onto it with USB anymore.
So I go reformat my SD card and have it be portable. Now it's impossible to move the data from Google Play, Pocket Casts and Merlin Bird ID app to my SD card as I used to be able to. Any new pictures I take are also saved with the app on internal storage. So now with my SD card as portable my internal storage fills up quickly and I'm once again boned.
Am I missing something? This new SD card management thing is worlds worse for me than Lollipop and I'm really tempted to downgrade but I feel like I'm missing something. Should I learn how to partition my SD card and make some of it adopted and some portable? Am I missing a setting or button to fix this?
You can connect your phone on the computer and access the SD card as always on MM, at least you should be able to (I am).
If your SD card doesn't appear when you connect your phone on your PC try to chance the connection setting on the notification area.
The new SD card management thing just makes your data more... Secure. It doesn't forbid you of copying things to your SD card via USB (but accessing it via an adapter is forbidden, tho)
I just upgraded wife's 2014 moto g last night and initially used her original 32gb card, but allowed it to be formatted for internal storage. Now i'm trying to use a 128 card I bought tonight. It keeps dropping out of the format with some sort of Java error message that goes away quickly. I have to then "fix" the card with mini partition manager on a Windows PC. It works fine for the other storage type. I tried even a 64GB Fat32 partition with other half not formatted, does same thing. I think Android is reformatting from scratch and it appears creating another smaller partition (as that what partition manager shows). Any ideas? I suppose this new Android scheme is only good for up to 32GB cards.
If you have SuperSu, untick 'Mount namespace separation'.
It causes SD problems.

Confused about using micro SD cards on this phone

Just received my RP2 yesterday and I'm really confused on how SD cards are used. I currently have it formatted as portable.
Here's the problems I'm seeing:
- Camera doesn't have an option to save to SD card.
- The Google photos app doesn't see any pictures/videos on my SD card.
- plugging into my Windows 10 computer, I only see internal storage.
I've tried formatting as internal, didn't seem to resolve any of the issues above. Not sure I like the idea as internal. When does it decide to use the SD card? It even warned that apps may be slower when formatting as internal.
So far I'm only able to use my SD card for Netflix downloads and Google Play Music downloads.
Never had this problem with any previous phones (Xperia XZ1, Nokia 7.1, LG G6)
I've noticed this on my razer phone aswell tried to use a 128gb card and it just absolutely tanked my loading speeds to the point phone wouldn't boot with said sd card in mounted as internal storage. Took said card out phone works fine. It was a class 10 speed too guess they need to be alot faster in read/writes to work properly
It appears the photos app couldn't see my SD card due to a common bug. I had to clear data and cache from system apps "Media Storage" and "Settings Storage". After clearing, photos app now sees my SD card and I can also see it when plugged into a computer.
