[Q]Battery History and Network Usage problem - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After i installed Froyo i noticed my battery life was drained faster than usual, on eclair i had ~48 hours, now on froyo max 24h.Just to note, i have stock Froyo+z4root+z4mod.
After playing around it for a bit, i entered battery history, and under Network usage tab, i have a process named 0, wich usess 100%, and kills my battery. When i try to click it i get a force close from application settings and nothing happens.
Anybody has any ideea what this is? or how to fix it or something

Are you using any lagfix?

I have already mentioned i'm using Z4root+Z4mod.

I have the same problem on stock ZSJPD and Speedmod k9a. Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem too. Someone please help.

Wow I have this same issue
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

After looking around in this forum i found that there are others that have this problem with HTC smartphones, so its not SGS exclusive, wich probably means its either somehow a linux process, or, its an application that does this.

Tryied using Droid Wall to kill most apps from internet acces(not all) the process is stil there and eating away my battery >.<

Bumpiti bump, is there a way to even try to diagnose this?

im having the same issue but not only the 0 process , i have UID 10007 and dialer also competing with 0 . all of them are hurting the batt bad. couldn't get to find what the 0 process is , im guessing its something from samsungs side thats buggy and it doesn't showup on ATK too ..... i know that samsung service center over here r not qualified regarding such technical matters and all they'll do if format the phone and give it back with a fresh install of 2.2
any devs/techs around that can find or lead us towards the culprit ?

Hmm, bump, have this problem too. On doc's bujp8 and hardcore's k9a kernel if that's any use.

Having the same problem now on JPU, was fine on JP6 earlier.
Guys please help !!!

bump,same prob!

Apparently '0' is the linux root process

It looks like at least some of you (most? all?) are running non-standard firmwares.
I live in Canada and am using the SGS on Bell Canada. Examples of my native firmwares are JH2 (2.1) and JK3 (2.2). I was having TERRIBLE battery performance when I flashed a non-native firmware and didn't get back to anything decent until I flashed the right modem for my region and enabled the 850 band which wasn't enabled by default by the firmware I had flashed.
Also, look into your WIFI sleep policy. This can have a huge impact. I leave mine as "sleep when screen turns off". I don't recall what the 2.2 default setting is.
Menu > Settings > Wireless and network > WIFI settings > menu / Advanced > WIFI sleep policy > edit & menu/Save

I have stock froyo that came with kies(not patched or anything), so the first part of your statement is irelevant.

They're simply tips and suggestions. I'll try and be less helpful next time.

I know, thanks for the suggestions, the thing is that our problem is just frustrating(with the unknown battery draining processes) and not something that can be solved by using the search button

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Terribly Inaccurate Time-Keeping

Hi people,
This is my first post, forgive me if I'm doing it wrong or in the in wrong place...
I have an annoying issue with my Galaxy S that I have googled and cannot find any information about or whether other people are also having the same problem.
When I set the time on my device in sync with the time I get from googling the time in my location, within a day my device is already 10 minutes behind the time google says is the time in my location. (other devices synced with google's time remain synced, its just the Galaxy S that does this).
A bit of information on my Galaxy S:
I am running Android 2.2(beta) I9000XXJP3,
kernel version 2.6.32.9,
build number FRF91.372
Ext3 speed fix running on phone
I am an electronics engineer, so my first guess as to what the problem is is that the phones real-time clock is not keeping time accurately (if in fact it has a hardware real-time clock!).
If theres no real-time clock then I am guessing it may be a problem with a software implementation of the real-time clock.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is it a problem perhaps with running the EXT3 speed fix that is causing the software to not keep time accurately? (as i understand it, the EXT3 speed fix and modified kernel reduces the number of writes to the Samsung RFS? Could the reduced number of writes be causing the software real-time clock to not be updated on its regular intervals?)
Any help is much appreciated. I have already been late for a couple appointments because of this problem lol
Thanks peeps
install clocksync that will take care of the time problem if any
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8027593&postcount=31
in a way i think the clock problem reported by some people might be lag related
i never have lag on my phone, and coincidentally i have no problem with time being delayed
running stock JH2, no lag fix as it's not necessary, GPS quick lock in 5 sec, no jumping around or to the next lane or next street
Excellent
Thanks a bunch. I may have to consider downgrading back to a working version of 2.1.
From all of my experiences with Android 2.1 on the Galaxy S (and I have tried about 8 different releases) is that I constantly get the "black screen of despair". Installing Froyo fixed that problem to a degree, and I rarely see the black screen with the speed fix. The phone is much faster.
From others' experiences, which firmware do you guys use? Or a more relevant question, which firmware have you found to be the most stable and usable firmware?
Cheers

There's your problem.
I'm using the JPH Froyo firmware with a lagfix. Works great for me although it has a minor lag now and then.
I'm pretty sure there is a clock in the phone. I don't think there is any phone out there without a real-time clock. I don't see what lag or file system has to do with the clock... Most likely your problem is a syncing issue. Set your time manually and turn off all auto syncing options, maybe there is problem with your operator’s clock or in the app you are using to sync.
Actually, JP3 seems to have a known issue with time keeping. I'd be guessing maybe it runs a NTP daemon with an incorrect clock skew (guessing though). Either way, heard it many times for JP3, but never any other firmware.
The reality is though, only developers should be using beta versions of froyo anyway.

Are there any significant improvements between JP3 and JPH? Or is JPH just a more matured development from JP3? Are there changelogs/bug fix reports anywhere available for these?

I'd imagine there would be a hardware real-time clock too. What got me thinking that it may be implemented some other way is that I turned off all syncing and manually set the time last night. I made sure i had wifi off, cellular data off, GPS off, roaming disabled, etc. prior to manually setting the time through the inbuilt clock.
I woke up the next morning to find that overnight the clock had somehow offset itself 5 minutes backwards from the time kept by google for my region. This was what initially made me think perhaps the time was being kept in software with an internal battery backup or something (I haven't cracked open my phone yet to see whats under the hood in fear of hurting it ).
Weird problem however you look at it. Although I don't think the problem occurred under Android 2.1, it seems to be a recent thing (post install 2.2 + Speed Fix).

Matured. But some people are having probs with JPH corrupting their IMEI's.. But there are no changelogs (because it's a leak). I haven't heard any complaints about the clock being wrong in JPH.
Rule of thumb is to use Eclair unless you are a developer though. Pre-release firmware isn't a good thing to use on a phone you rely on

Funny you'd say that though, I've had less problems with Froyo JP3 (other than the time problem ^) than I did with any version of Eclair. Especially when it came to the black screen of despair. I could not find a way to minimise its frequency, let alone get rid of it completely with Eclair. Mind you, at the time when i put JP3 on my phone, Eclair was only up to JM6 I believe.
Maybe it'd be worth giving JM7 or JM8 a go...

[Q] Some remaining probs with doc 7.6.2

I am trying to get a solution for these 3 problems I am facing with Doc´s 7.6.2.
Maybe it is not a big deal to make it a perfect ROM but these 3 topics are annoying:
I wrote the same message already in Doc´s threat but no answer at all. in 5 min 10 new messages so nobody really takes care for a new question
Hi Guys,
Some problems I do have with the 7.6.2 and for sure I am not alone with these errors.
1 From time to time high energy consumption but sometimes not - this is crazy. One thing I realized when alarm is switched on for all weekdays then it sucks almost 20% in 5h - just in standby mode. Whats wrong here?
2 GPS signal is bad. When you using this tracking tools eg. cardio trainer it looses half time the GPS signal. Was definitely not with older ROMs.
Is that the modem version?
Is this part of the kernel?
3 Bluetooth works but whenever activating and deactivating getting a stupid message about an opp bla bla.
What is wrong?
Who can help?
Thanks
boris03
quite alot galaxy s users have reported issues with the gps reception i used to think its just a driver issue but upon reading into it would seem its related to the antenna. The wifi also suffers from this problem for me it does anyway. you can try out gps booster lite from market it does help outdoors to get a faster fix as for battery issues well im not so sure you would prob better asking in that thread if your still not heard try sending a pm that should work. good luck

1.) Turn off your lagfix, run stock RFS see if you still get the issue.
Do a fresh install dont add ANY apps other than stock, observe for 1-2 days of battery usage.
2.) GPS is a hit or miss, hardware is broken.
3.) Never had issues with BT, I use it on a day to day basis to pass around files at the office.
Are you using one of those OC kernels? Or any of the suggested kernels for the matter? I was using Super Optimized Kernel for a while and the battery drain was outstanding even on the non-OC versions. Switched to SpeedMod 300hz. Haven't monitored the battery though but it seems better with normal usage. Also, what lagfix are you using? For a time I was using the Ext-4 Overkill lagfix from the ULF and I noticed considerably less battery life.
As Earlz suggested, try disabling lagfixes and tweaks and monitor..then if it is better than before perhaps using a different lagfix would be a solution. Try switching up kernels (remembering to disable lagfixes prior). Try running different launchers too. I'm no expert on how these things work and affect battery life, but this is all based from personal experience.
My GPS never worked from the start no matter what firmware/ROM I'm on so it seems to really be a hardware issue as EarlZ mentioned. If the problem came about after flashing 7.6.2 then try reflashing to stock firmware with repartition and installing 7.6.2 again after clearing cache and factory reset. Somehow that (having a super clean install) usually fixes random problems I get with any ROM. I'm not certain if it will have any affect on GPS performance but it's worth a try.
Bluetooth is still working fine for me. Perhaps the aforementioned clean install advice I gave could remedy this.
Hi there, i rescently installed DJP5 v8.0.1 . And have some problems with it. When i'm making call i hear the other side perfect, but they dont hear me well. Is it some issue with the ROM or ? Have someone else experienced similar problems?

There is investigation on that one...
For now, it seems to be a modem issue from the stock modem of ADJP5
Flash another modem seems to fix this issue

[Q] Battery drains after Froyo update

Hi all!
I tried searching the forum for similar issues. Sorry if exists.
I have a Galaxy S (I9000XXJPP) which i updated to 2.2 Froyo through Kies. Everything went well, Froyo seems to be running ok but i do have a big problem: battery performance. It drains in only a few hours. in standby it goes from 100% to 10-15% over the night. Before the update it took more than 2-3 days.
I looked on other forums and there are others with the same problem.
Some said it was because of the Wifi sleep policy which i changed to "When screen turns off" but in vain.
Of course i don't have any apps that drain the battery.
Anyone got to the problem and solved it?
Its probaby the Gallery sensor problem
Go replace the Gallery app with a fixed/bugfree version. Need root and root explorer to do it. Its all over the forums just look
so this sensor works in the background and drains the battery this much?
sorry but i didn't find any thread similar...
Gallery and email seem be causing the most issues. Its very common and appears to happen on quite a few different ROMS.
SGS tools has a fix for an alternative gallery.apk which you can try (you will need to be rooted though). You can download SGS tools from the market.

i wouldn't root it. might be problems with the warranty after.
anyway not sure what i did but may battery is back to normal. stopped the auto rotation for a while then activated it back and didn't use the gallery.

z4root allows you to do a temporary root, but again thats up to you.
Your best solution, if it is the gallery causing the issue is to simply not use the gallery and find an alternative in the market to download.
i did just that. stopped auto rotation, downloaded just pictures from the market but still the other night went again from 70-80% to 0. it's weird sometime the battery is drained like hell but sometimes it's normal. i need to find the cause.
any way to get back to 2.1?
You can download a generic 2.1 ROM from samfirmware.com and flash it with ODIN.
Also, if there isnt an official Froyo for your product code yet, you can use the KIES Reg hack application to restore it back to 2.1.
same problem - battery drains extremly fast (Froyo 2.2).
diasbled push mail - battery still drains..
have no idea what to do.......
I faced the same "over-night" problem...I thought that background apps done that, but it seems that after turning off data network the life-time of my battery almost went from less than a day to about 4 full days. Maybe the signal strength was an important issue (indoor, I have about 2-3 signal lines). Also mail/calendar/weather/etc continuous updates drain the battery...
To summerise, If you have battery draining problem just root your device and install SGS Tools 4.0x and goto Patched Stock Apps in it and install the Gallery3d app which will replace your stock but buggy gallery. Also the Camera update is great imho as it allows you to use power button as camera shutter. Now If you do not want to root or so anythign drastic then just NEVER use Gallery and download JustPicutres! from market (Free) and use that from now on. Easy
I had this same issue. After updating froyo via Kies, battery life dropped from normal 2 days to less than 24 hours. With 3G disabled as well as sync.
But, what's even more strange, is that when I got frustrated enough and flashed back to JM2 with Odin, the same problem still existed! Only 24 hours or less, every time. Same happened with JM9 I tried after that.
Been trying these battery resets and stuff without success. Has anyone come into any sort on conclusion, what could be the reason for these battery-draining issues, especially AFTER updating/flashing?

[Q] eclair live wallpapers

Just got my Galaxy S up and running on AT&T. It's the unbranded phone - not a captivate.
What is the best stable rom right now? I read about the official version codes, but I'm confused as to JR, JP, JM, etc.
At this point I just want something that's fast and works, so probably something 2.1 based. Later when I have more time I'll play with Froyo.
[Q] SGS South American Version will come whit DIGITAL TV reception
Guys, d u think there is gonna be a way to do it whit software changing, like flashing the SA firmware, or the phone needs a hardware part to receive the T signal ?
[Q] Laggy pinch-to-zoom
Hi everybody!
When i use the pinch-to-zoom function in my browser (the default browser on SGS), it's very slow. It is very laggy and not fast at all. Is there a fix for this or have I missed something?
please help!
Think you've answered your own question there.
If you want it on 2.1 install launcherpro or something.

[Q] Battery Drain on Mimocan Lag Fix
Hello all
I have noticed that my battry drain very fast after I applyed the Mimocan lag fix with a Sandisk 16 gb card Class 2 (all thanks to Mimocan for this lag fix. Apps run much smoother).
The main problem is when the phone goes in to standby. Last night it drained 22% even with all sync action diabled and all apps killed. Before the lag fix I did only see a 2-4% drop in battery over night.
To compare it drained more then a 15 min call I made before I went to sleep (35% vs 25% of total battery used. I pulled it out of the charger 5 min. before the call, so the data should be correct)
When the phone is activated, it seem like the battery drain is about normal.
I wonder if all/most ppl have this problem or is it just me?
My guess is that the SD card is activated all the time to acces apps data, and thus drain the battery.
Im on the m2 software, but I dont know if its the software or just a common issue when doing this lagfix?
Give a comment, Thx.
[Q] What drivers are needed for Odin?
Like other people, I'm having extreme difficulty connecting my SGS to PC with USB. I have tried just about everything mentioned in the forums, including:
-USB drivers from Kies and other sources (like the ATT Captivate drivers). Usually the Kies downloaded package installs all, but it cannot find the samsung modem driver when I plug in the phone. The Captivate drivers could not find "USB gadget". I tried installing both.
-Reformatting SD card (actually allows me to connect to 91 Panda PC Helper in -debug mode... but that's it)
-Erasing all references to Nokia and Motorola using Regedit. However I did not erase references to Samnsung or Windows Mobile)
-Praying to the creator
-Sacrifice of chicken
-Starting phone while connected to USB
-turning off antivirus.
I tried flashing phone using odin, in download mode, but it seemed that odin could not see my phone. Nothing happened.
Anyone have other ideas?
[Q] Lagging in ALL KINDS of music player after flashing samset1.9
I dont know if it is just an issue only to me, but I am having lags in any music player i tried after flashing samset 1.9.Generally the device runs other apps really fast but the sound and music lags all the time except when I leave the device be to just playing the music. I am using ext4 for a2sd fix. Dont know anyone is having the same problem
[Q] open img files from ClockworkMod Recovery?
Does anyone know a way to open the backup img files created by ClockworkMod Recovery?
[Q] Is the latest fix completely safe for device longterm?
Some people are wary of the stress caused by the latest fix, I am very very new to smartphone's in general and wanted the honest opinions of those who truly know android/device hardware.
There is a lot of well intentioned misinformed posters in any forum. But these things are important to get correct, I would much rather wreck my external 32GB card than the actual phone internal memory.
[Q] Busybox not installing
Hey all,
I am having a problem with busybox. According to the 1.18 installer, I have 1.15.3 installed. But the installer won't let me upgrade because 'the nand is not unlocked'. When I try the older 1.17 version, I suddenly have no busybox installed and have the same message with the failed instalation. What can I do....
Running jm5 with samset 1.9 (ext 3/4 fix not applied).
Alvast bedankt.
[Q] Wake the phone using Menu, Home or Back button?
Like the title says. Does anyone know if there's a way to wake the phone up using the Menu, Home or Back button like they've been able to do with the Desire and Nexus One?
Reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696907&goto=newpost
Samsung placed the power button at an awkward place. I assume it wouldn't be too hard to accomplish this. Probably using an app or coded into custom ROMs?
EDIT: Don't have the phone yet but so I assumed it couldn't do it like the Desire. it seems you can wake the phone with Home and Power. I think the thread above details how to enable/disable the other buttons in waking the phone as well. Looks like a simple editing of the keyboard layout and then pushing it back. Thanks.
[Q] Still lag in Contacts and Phone even with Quadrant score 2106
I am now having Quadrant score of 2106 after using RyanZAEXT2Lagfix Alpha1. It is a huge increase. However, i still notice the annoying lag in CLOSING of application such as CONTACTS and PHONE. Opening of these application is also not as seemless as in Desire HTC sense which I previously own.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
[Q] No missed calls, sms, emails showing on icons
Last rom to work was a froyo rom, now any rom i put on dose not show a numeric sign to how many sms, emails or missed calls have not been read, please dose anyone know why?
[Q] ODIN questions
Hi there,
Could anyone tell me what will happen if I did the following:
I checked around but I don't think these minor questions have been covered in the big FAQ
Is it necessary to apply repartitioning when updating to a new firmware?
Will you corrupt data if you upgrade just 'modem' or 'csc' on ODIN?
Will you retain all your data if you don't go for repartition when updating to new firmware?
I've successfully flashed 2 new firmwares. One of them was Russian (jm5) and I was told a bit after than I can just apply the jm1 csc. Anyway, I got over it and just reflashed back to JM2 as it was stable enough.
Thanks
[Q] Headphones and micro issue
Hi,
I am the happy owner of HiDefDrum (+micro) - by atomic floyd - headphones I bought originally for my iPhone. It worked great with the iPhone 3G 16Go (sound, microphone and button).
Now I bought a Samsung Galaxy S last week, and I have problems with my headphones.
If I plug the headphones completely, the sound is weird when I listen to music (as if I heard only an echo of the sound, I don't even hear the voice of the singer) unless... I press the headphones button ! Then the sound is normal.
I can listen to a normal sound when I do not plug the headphones completely (leaving the last part of the plug outside).
And in any case, the microphone does not work.
I thought it was a hardware problem, until I saw that we can access many configuration settings using the code *#*#197328640#*#*
I guess the problem can be solved by modifying some settings in this menu, but I have no idea which !
Can anyone help ?
[Q] Question before drastic measures :) experts please
Hi Guys
I have tried all sorts of lag fixes on this forum, but after installing a couple of apps (10 to 15 in my case). The telephone is sluggish and laggy.
Yesterday i got fed up oflag fixes and firmware flashing hoping that the next version will be the solution so i put it on one of the online selling websites
I really like the way the phone looks and its amazing hardware but i am really not sure whether to keep it or sell it
Everyone keeps saying that the froyo 2.2 update will solve all the problems, so would you guys recommend holding on to the phone till end of september till the froyo is released, or should i sell it now and minimize my losses and try some other mobile phone
Is it true that 2.2 is gonna do its magic regarding lag and the time it takes to load an app, or am I having high expectations
[Q] Couple of newbie questions :)
Greetings fellow Friends from Galaxy
I just moved myself from the HTC Magic section to this one.. It was quite a jump, the Galaxy S Camera and 4inch screen are AWESOME =)
I have a few noob questions that I don't want to spread through many posts, so i've chosen to get them all here, without polution this forum section. Also they might come in handy for future Galaxy S buyers!
My phone is: 2.1-update1 @ I9000XXJF5
Question #1
Well at first glance everyone's trying to fix the "LAG PROBLEM"... I haven't noticed any lag!! What are we talking about? If its a fix.. i want it too
Question #2
The phone came with Android 2.1, but at samsung-firmwares.com and at this dev section of the forum, i saw the JP3 Froyo release. How stable is this? Is it already a daily driver or a total beta? As an Android lover, i'd love to have the latest
Question #3
I've used the One Click rooting solution and then the ROM Manager Clockwork to boot into clockwork rom and make a full-system backup. In my HTC Magic i had the recovery ROM (Amon_RA) flashed into the internal phone memory, so even if i didn't have a ROM installed, i was ALWAYS able to boot into recovery. That was a safety plus. How can i flash the Clockwork Recovery directly to my phone, without the ROM Manager? I'd feel more secure if i could count on recovery even if, for example, i flashed a non-working system ROM.
Question #4
So what is YOUR favourite ROM? My stock has some unwanted apps, and even worse, it's Eclair. I'd like to switch soon, but i don't know these Galaxy S ROMs Tell me what's the best ROM for you!
Thanks guys, XDA is indeed the #1 place for mobile stuff
Cheers

[Q] Wifi app battery usage?

Hello everyone, I have read several pages of battery discussions in general and I can't seem to find my specific issue. My wifes x has been getting terrible battery life and I just notice that wifi has been using battery and haven't even turned it ON! Does anyone have an explanation or fix. It is rooted and bootloader unlocked, running stock with xposed. I have tried reflashing firmware without wipe to no avail. Thinking my next move is FXZ but id like to see if someone might have an idea before I do that. Thanks a bunch.

Settings > WiFi > Click the 3 dots in bottom right corner. > Click Advanced > Uncheck "Scanning always available".
You can thank google for this. In attempt to build their database up (they say "to improve location accuracy"), google actually scans for wifi networks EVEN WHEN IT IS OFF! This is now the default setting!
Uncheck it and see if battery use improves...
Thanks for the super fast reply! Done, I bet that will help a bunch, considering it was the third biggest battery hog behind screen and android services.
