I don't know when it started but I'm quite sure that I used to be able to use the touchscreen with the keyboard extended. I am running the latest hboot and radio with the cyanogen nightlies and newest pershoot kernel.
Is anybody have this problem?
Perhaps I just need to reflash radio and hboot but its weird because it works fine with the keyboard closed.
Thanks for your help.

Your definitely supposed to be able to use the touchscreen when the keyboards out, That's how I use my phone most of the time. I think it's a hardware problem to me like some cable to the touchscreen got messed up so when you open up your keyboard it gets disconnected, but I really don't know could be wrong. Also, I don't see how reflashing hboot or the radio will fix it, as far as I know they don't affect the touchscreen at all.

As "Ianlikescake" Said its hardware not software. I work in a second hand phone shop & the most common problem with the G1 (Apart from people abusing this beautiful device) is a ribbon cable tears in the back when the screen has been opened & closed a lot.
Normally when it goes the touch screen goes completely but we have had one customer when the same thing happened to him as in your situation, We sent the phone off to be repaired & all they did was replace the cable
So re flashing the radio & hboot wont fix it, Sorry!

My phone has a problem not really similar but it still has to do with the screen. When i lock the phone and when I try to unlock it when the screen is down the screen doesn't turn on. But when I flip the screen up the screen turns on. Once I unlock the phone the screen works fine i flip it back down and it works untill it locks. So do you think it's a problem with the ribbon cable?

I think I have a similar issue. Whenever I have the keyboard closed, the screen will not turn on when you press the end-key. Only the LED lights will turn on. When you flip the keyboard out, the screen turns on and the phone is functional.
Over the next few weeks, I then realized that this only happens when the phone's keyboard is completely closed. If you leave the keyboard out 1cm or so (to the point where you can only see the spacebar), you can turn on the phone. Check to see if it works for you.

That used to work for me but now the problem got worse. Sometimes even when the keyboards out the screen doesn't turn on so I have to mess with the screen for a little bit till it works. Now I know it's the cable that's messed up. I think the reason it's like this is from repetitive flipping out the screen. I gotta be more careful next time if i can fix it.

Well ive had my phone for a while with hyperdragon iv iolite working completely fine without any hardware or software issues for months. Today i took out the battery of the phone, and put it back in and turned it on, but when the phone turned on, the touch scrren is not responding to anything. everything works fine with all the buttons and keyboard, but the touchscreen isnt working. What could have gone wrong just by taking out the battery. I also havnt dropped or damaged the phone in anyway so i dont see it being a hardware problem. Thanks. I really need help
I have heard of people who has been able to solve this problem by hard resetting the devise. I have had not such luck....comes to be that from sliding wear and tear the connector to the screen gets damaged. My screen is completely disable, I found someone that was able to buy a second hand phone on ebay and was able to switch the connector. Looks like to much of a hassle to me, so Im sticking with this until I switch phones.
My friends G1 is unresponsive whenever the screen is closed, but seems to work when sliding it open. The funny thing is, while the device doesn't perform any actions when the screen is closed, it still seems to be responding to touch. When the screen is opened again, your touched actions will "catch up" and the phone responds. This happens from recovery mode as well as in Android.
Can anyone help?

The phone is in standby/sleep mode while screen is off, so you cant use the touch screen. You must double tap Menu to get to the home screen. While in recovery mode you cant use the touch screen cause you have to use the hardware buttons or the trackball. Im guessing you were unaware that the phone goes into sleep mode. When you slide the KB the phone wakes from sleep mode and allows you to use it.You only have to slide it when you need it not just to do it randomly.
No no, sorry if I worded it incorrectly. The screen is on and it is frozen when the slider is closed. Once you open the keyboard, everything works fine. As soon as you slide it in, the screen freezes on its current display and stops updating.

What rom are you using?
If it is a hero rom then it doesnt work while in landscape mode so you cant open the KB while on home.
Its a 2.1 ROM by Kingx
The screen behaves the same in and out of android though...such as in the recovery (JFv1.4) console. If the screen is closed, the screen "freezes", but the frozen picture is still displayed. If you slide the screen ouţand expose the keyboard, it works fine. The phone otherwise operates normally, as does the standby mode.

You need to upgrade your recovery though
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
Try wiping and reinstall the rom and wipe everything. Also you need a task manager cause you might have a billion apps open.
I'll try it on his phone when I get off work. Thanks for the recovery link. Do you prefer this over JF?

JF is super old and lacks many features from Amon_Ra. But it's based off of Cyan 1.4 recovery. It makes a lot of things easier like partitioning, wiping, backup, restoring roms.
Alright,
Home now with his phone. I swapped JF's recovery with RA. The issue still exists, and I'm wondering if it's hardware related...
This is frustrating. I don't know if I can fix it for him...
The problem seems to have gotten worse on its own. If the screen is closed at all, the screen will go black with a slight image shown with what seems to be an unworking backlight. However, upon sliding the keyboard open again, the backlight does not return until the device is rebooted while leaving the keyboard open.
Edit:
The backlight seems to come on sometimes when you slide the screen open...

You might wanna wipe and install another rom to see if the problem stays. There might be a hardware problem with your phone.
I've wiped and tried a couple of other ROMs but the issue persists. If it's a hardware issue, is there anything I can try to fix it?

It could be the ribbon that connects to the display. If you can find the assembly guide you could replace the broken or loose piece. But i'm not 100% on which part of the display needs to be replaced. You could ask someone at T-Mobile or at a electronics store what the problem is.HTC offers a free 2yr warranty so you might be able to get a replacement.
Bumping this to see if this was ever resolved. Having the same issue, and considering replacing it brand new, but wanted to know what exactly needs to be replaced so I can order it.
Hello,
My Touch screen doesn't respond to touching since an hour ago.
I see no logical reason for this fault,
My screen is guarded and nothing happend to it.
I tried to remove battery and insert it with no luck, I booted my phone into CWM touch recovery, and it also doesn't recognize touching.
update2:
The problem appeared again.
just flash a kdz to return to stock rom

The problem appeared again I tried a lot of times to remove battery&insert but it doesn't help.
Please help me.
I've just flashed my phone to stock rom,
I'm still having the same touchscreen issues - the screen won't respond to touching.
Any suggestion please?
Is it possible that the touchscreen issue is caused because of the screen protector?

Screen protector protects screen If you have got stock FW back on the phone, just bring it to your carrier and they should do it on warranty.

Thanks for the advice,
I flashed stock rom and now when I turn on my phone It shows me the "Android Welcome Screen", Is there a method how to bypass this screen without touching the screen? (If I'm taking phone to my carrier, it might seem strange to them that my phone shows the "Welcome screen" whether the touchscreen doesn't work so they could know I flash my phone and not to accept my phone's warranty)

You can try on-screen phone, which is a software by LG, but i think, that this also needs to be setup first... Otherwise, just tell them, that you did a factory reset, because your phone wasnt working properly anymore, and thats when your error occured.
I dont see another way... Maybe repair it on your own

I'm going to take my phone back to carrier
But there's very strange thing: the touchscreen rarely works.
I removed the battery for a night and when I got up in the morning and I inserted the battery and turned the device on, for a few seconds the touch worked . What does it tell about phone?
I've just received my phone from repairing, and my touch screen has been replaced.
I'm a little disappointed because I expected for getting new phone(I have a warranty). I've also noticed that the screen is a little thicker, about few mm, which is weird.
Is it right that phone with replacement touch screen won't be as smooth and good as normal one, or not necessarily?
Same problem of Freezing screen
Disappointing but i too have this very same problem with my brother's P970... any ideas how or why?
though sometimes it would respond but leaving it a few minutes would again make it freeze. The hardware buttons work but the 4 touch buttons wont. now i cannot get thru the rom manager to make it into Bootloader mode so i can install another rom...
some things i did a few days before this happened:
1. flashed CWM recovery successfully.
2. installed a lot of apps and happened to fill up the SD card.
3. installed a new ROM Gingerbread Repackaged V20N
I can still get to S/W Upgrade but all I need is the Bootloader Mode. I honestly dont think this would be a digitizer malfunction since it works well in a given time. It's like it lagggggs much and unresponsive. I cannot get past the lock screen. Any ideas or any other way to get to the B/L mode? Thanks.

You need to indicate your current ROM. Then can the issue be accessed

Atsthe title describes, i have a problem with the phone. After sliding out keyboard, screen goes black.
it started all with black screen, which didnt turn on with power button, either with keys. Did fact reset, changed rom, didnt help.
Now i have a problem, even worser.
When sliding the keyboard, most of the times, phone freezes and reboots.
I have tried to make it more clear with the video.
Thanks in advance

Try pulling the battery or shut it off. Then slide open the keyboard and reboot. If the Motorola logo appears on the screen fine even with the keyboard open then its likely some software issue. If its showing the same symptoms while booting then its a hardware issue.

Thanks for the reply. The phone is booting up with the keyboard open, but as soon as i close it it freezes again. I am almost sure it is a hardware problem, but which part. do i have to replace the whole display, or just a cable, if cable, which cable could it be ?
I recently also found out, that the Front camera is not working anymore.
Normal camera gives: unable to initialize error. could it be related with it??
...Its simple. You need new flex cable.

Shot in the dark here. If you're getting vibrations and response to touch, my best guess would be that the screen itself is damaged. May have to get a new panel for the device. I wouldn't THINK it would be software related, but for the sake of ruling things out, what software is the device running? Custom ROM? Stock build?
EDIT: It could be a simple thing like a loose or disconnected ribbon cable inside.
stock,
it actually happened after a reset (and shipping by USPS)

This is the phone where you hit factory reset, threw it in a box and shipped it while it was resetting?
Probably the screen was damaged in shipping.
