1. Kernel and 2. Rom Error Questions - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to word the title correctly to establish that I want to ask 2 different questions, but dont want to clutter up the board with 2 separate posts
Please help if you can
1. Kernel
Why do some kernels work with some roms and not others? I have taken a Sprint Rom, ran it through the kitchen, and tried flashing any number of kernels. The only one that works is Zenulators AnyKernel. I know at times only the stock overclocked worked, but I think at certain times I have gotten the no perf lock to work (though that may have been with an NFX Rom, and not one that I created myself). This leads me to ask why would a kernel work for a rom that is built from the same base that I am using, but not on mine? Is dsixda's kitchen not the one everyone uses? I just dont understand why I am limited to one kernel that is not undervolted and overclocked. I would like to put a 768 overclocked, undervolted kernel with this rom, but cant get any to flash. Should I just use the kitchen to "port" the kernel. How does nfinitefx45 get the kernels he posts to work with a Sprint base? Is the kernel edited in some way? Im not calling anyone out, just trying to learn how to get a good kernel to work with my rom.
2. MAJOR issue: when running df, I get an error that etc/mtab: no such file or directory. What I have done is in the paragraph below
I decided to take another cracked at a minimal Sprint 2.1 Rom. I used dsixda kitchen 0.107 to root, add busybox, remove boot sounds, deodex, add data/app, add nano + sysrw, sysro, bash, and zipalign the .7 Rom. I then removed all Sprint apps except for VVM, all google apps, all htc apps and widgets that were not explicity needed (need the contacts and ime apks among a few others), removed a ton of system apps (can provide a list of current system/app dir and a list of all that was removed if it will help). I edited the lockscreen so it wasnt in landscape mode all the time. Added an OMADM.apk file that didnt FC when I tried to update the prl (tested the update and it works). I did find an EPST.apk that adds ## codes back to the dialer (should I include that in the rom...wasnt intending on it as the only ## code that doesnt work is the prl...data works) OMADM.apk is smaller that the EPST...but EPST does exist already...and I might be able to pull OMADM meaning 0 firmware, profile, or prl updates...but you could do ##prl manual...I dont know, still thinking it through. I did end up creating a google apps zip file with the apps from the .7 rom so that market will work (removed maps as it wasnt up to date and the Streets.apk never worked, but left gmail, youtube, voice search to work with jonasl's htc keyboard, and of course gtalk). In doing this, I am thinking about creating some packs for the rom, but really need the above 2 questions answered to find out where to go from here.

afaict, the 'kernels' are literally just the linux kernel that provides some basics to the os... altho linux IS a monolithic kernel, it is not a bsd-system that has all the tools completely-compiled for the system together...
thus, the answer to 2. is that you have deleted too much of the periphery, for instance the actual mount-table system that df uses to to check... (ie: some prog creates the mtab, and apparently it is not the kernel, i guess)
alternatively, the answer to 1. is that there is actually too much in the roms that are using something unique to each kernel that you are trying to install (altho that seems odd to me)... thus, the only way that the rom will work is if you give it the kernel with the tools that it (the rom) needs...
tbh - im not exactly sure - ive not gone into the depths of kernel-swapping that youre trying to explore... in full-linux-systems, the kernel is fairly easy to update without breaking all of the miscellaneous tools - however apparently the android-roms are more tied-together than a normal linux system...
gl and maybe someone with more experience will give an accurate (rather than a guessing) answer...

my first root, lots of questions. :-)

n00b, but not an idiot here. been playing with handhelds for many years, new to android though.
I've been watching this forum (CDMA Hero sect.) since I got my Hero, been learning quite a bit. Held off on rooting until there was a official 2.1 release for the device that a ROM could be built around (I wanted full function of the phone and software), did the stupid thing of running the RUU (leaked official), and had to wait until Regaw (thanx!) gave us root...
It would seem the tone of this forum has changed fundamentally since the release of the EVO and an official 2.1 for our Heros. I can understand that perhaps the "thrill" is gone, and since we can all get 2.1 now without rooting, I guess it's "why bother"? (see questions below)
Aaaaanyway...
just did my first root, my first nandroid BU, my first rom flash (hated the rom), and then my first nandroid recover ;-) (what an amazing function, what a relief!) About to try out a 2nd ROM, see if I like it better...
(as an aside to the point of this post, the ROM i tried was DamageR, found it too "messy" for my tastes, and while I can appreciate the work put into it, the options it offers... not my style. was thinking on Damageless, waiting for a "rerelease" of his final. Or perhaps the Aloysius...)
Now that I have my caveats and excuses out of the way, I had a few n00b questions?
1) while I think I have figured out what JIT is, why is it "enabled" in many new ROMs? Is it not an included part of Sense 2.1 from HTC on the Hero?
2) When I was wiping before flash, I was unable to wipe davlik (sp?), insisted I had to do through adb. Is this "normal"?
3) could someone explain what "push" an APK is? Since I have rooted, will I be unable to use the application installer in the HTCsync? (haven't actually tried yet...) And how to "flash" a file? (Example: Dammageless' LWP fix...) I am sure it's something very simple that I am just not getting dues to being unfamiliar with the jargon here.
4) I would really like to use the A2SD feature, and in the recovery screen (where one does the nandroid BUs) it gives me the option to create partitions. I was of course clever enough to BU all data on the card before doing Anything re: root/flashing/etc, but I would like to know if this was needed? Will it just use empty space already present on the card? And in general, I would love to know what I am doing re: A2SD in general, I know "search is my friend", but would someone point me to a quick and succinct link to the "instructions" of doing this? And the different kinds of partitions (ext2? ext3?ext4? huh? why?) I need to know about?
5) And, so why bother rooting now? I know this sounds like a dense question, but really since I don't know enough about it, I guess I am looking for a list of "the obvious reasons" that would not occur to me, or other Android nooblets. LWP will be nice i guess, other launchers, A2SD, bootscreens, OCing... what else?
5) Personally, I am hoping people will rise to the Froyo challenge. While being ignorant of most things involving "programing", or compiling (cooking?), my understanding is that 2.2 runs several times faster due to (a new?) JIT (admitted ignorance again), so does this mean "more efficient"? Would something like a Hero be able to take advantage of that? I realize that we (due to CPU) will never have the highend features (OpenGL, gaming, LWPs being sluggish), so please correct me if I am grossly missing something, besides it not being written for this HW, I see that many other versions written for other devices have been ported to this device.... is this being actively worked on, seen a worthy challenge? Or even a possible one? One that has any benefits?
7) And the n00best question of them all: ROM suggestions? I happen to like Sense, or thought I did because of the 7 screens and other neato features in the UI, but it seems from further reading I can get most features and function out of just about any of them... As an example, what will I gain from flashing Damageless as opposed to the stock RUU? (While Damageless' ROM seems to be the most popular, it is also the least described in his post re: features added/removed, and it's benifits. It would seem like his ROM was "da bomb" when we didnt have 2.1 officially, but since we do now... do I bother with his? Or move to something "more exciting"?
Thank you for your patience.
/n00b-rant
1) JIT just speeds up the phone a bit, although, it's incompatible with Sense :\
2) Don't worry about the dalvik cache unless you're getting problems with booting up a new ROM
3) Push = copying a file to the device (usually when you're putting an .apk in the /system/app/ directory) And about HTCsync? I've never used it before, but it probably wouldn't hurt to try.
4) A2SD? I suggest you back up the files on your sd card before trying anything with it, also, make sure it's a fast card.
5) Rooting? To get rid of annoying sprint bloatware, overclocking, Wi-Fi Tether, etc.
5b) It'll be a little while before we get a stable FroYo (when they release the source, the work will begin)
7) I was about to suggest DarchDroid, but seeing as you like sense.....
(although, 7 homescreens? That's available in just about every homescreen app on the market, my favorite being LauncherPro Beta)
1. The JIT leak we have is buggy at best, and Force close city at worst, but is supposed to be fully featured in 2.2
2. What version of recovery are you running?
3. You can still use the HTCSync installer, but to push system files, you need to use ADB (Google "Android SDK"). You flash a file the same way you flash a ROM, always nandroid backup.
4. A2SD is only really helpful if you have a Class 6 SDcard, and can be hurtful otherwise. A2SD requires a portion of the SDCard to be formated as EXT, so say you have a 1GB SDcard.
256MB EXT (Space for apps)
0MB Swap (basically, "RAM" on your SDCard)
The rest as FAT. In a file manager and you phone, your SDcard will only appear to be ~760MB, as 256 is taken up by EXT.
5. Being able to completly customize everything, getting day by day support to fix bugs instead of waiting on Sprint/HTC, Basically, rooting is what makes your phone YOUR phone.
6. 2.2 is currently available in a very basic install, and will be developed further when the source code is released. Yes, the new JIT is supposedly 450% faster, by being more efficient with how it handles everything, and theorhetically with it, we can expect to see performance increases in everything.
7. I'm a personal fan of DarchDroid, it lacks Sense but he's incorporating ADWLauncher into his next release (Google it, it's amazing.) Damageless is also no longer developing his ROM as the Evo is out. Same thing with Flipz.
Anything else?

I think so, but it's better to ask to nojein about that. I never used that kernel.

No screenshot needed. This ROM uses the default LG homescreen.
This is just a stripped down original ROM, with few tweaks. I like it that way
I know this is old, but thanks Apparently, this and void are the only light ROMs that don't come with Darktremor's apps2sd. I dont like putting everything in the SD card
My ROMs will never have app2sd included.
I'm using a newer version, with Zeam instead of LG launcher. But i don't know if i can use Zeam in my ROMs without having issues with the author of the app... So i didn't upload it.
Anyway my laptop is broken, so i don't have a computer to use. When i earn enough money and buy a new one, i'll upload another ROM with a new look.
Why do you say this is old?
EDIT:
I managed to boot my phone with only five apps, but of course it wouldn't do anything...
I could remove more apps and make it lighter, but this is the minimum stuff needed to have full functionality without FCs somewhere. If i started to remove more stuff, i would lose basic apps, or make FC.
I also didn't enable hardware acceleration by default because i didn't see any improvement in performance. Same goes to stagefright. Only visible improvement was in quadrant, but that really means nothing.
Most people that complain about phone speed, should look at the amount of apps they install.

Because it was on the last page. Sorry, I was just being paranoid about mods sort of bashing people for opening up old threads

This makes this the most sensible ROM out there (that's my opinion) On my previous ROM, i couldn't disable stagefright for some reason, so I flashed this. I'm still playing around with HW acceleration and JIT.

Agree. With the amount of apps I have because of this rom, I dont have those long term usage slowdowns where only a reboot could "clean" the RAM.
Also, I'll try to make a ROM of my own(soon, granted im not lazy). I'm running Arch Linux (main), but I have been really really lazy on finding the appropriate (arch equivalent) packages for compiling xD

This ROM doesn't even have one month!
There are lots of new threads, and this isn't a popular ROM, so it went to last pages...
I thought about adding a kernel that could enable oc, but my phone works so well that i didn't see any advantage in doing that.
It's better to keep things simple and running.
About arch, can't help. Never used it. I'm a debian user
I also hardly reboot my phone. Only when i forget to charge battery.
Are you seeing any improvements with hw acc? I didn't. I enabled jit by default because it was so talked when 2.2 came out. But never tried to use phone with it disabled.

Not really. However, with the stock ROM at stock everything, I get a 400+ quadrant score. In this ROM with HW acceleration and JIT enabled, I get 555. I'll test it again with less variables and factors or stuff.
I'm not turning them off, btw. I might come across something well that used to not work properly with HW accel off
I've just installed your rom.
Restored apps and data with Titanium Backup.
Well...
AWESOME ROM! Thank you very very much!
It is so fast and stable.
Very very good work
I've only one problem. I've installed calcoulator and calendar apk. All fine for the first one but i cannot sinc gmail calendar nor exchange calendar, and when i go in to the calendar options, it give com.calendar.com error.
To restore apps from original ROM, always copy them to /system/app (dont forget to mount it first as read-write). Lots of these apps have issues if the go to /data/app.
After cppying them, change their permissions to 644 and reboot.
I dont use sync stuff, so it was removed...
First download the zip file with apk removed. Uncompress it, and copy to /system/app these apk:
calendar.apk
calendarprovider.apk
googlecalendarsyncadapter.apk
googlecontactssyncadapter.apk
calculator.apk
These should be enough to have calendar with sync, contacts with sync, and calculator.
If you installed these apps to /data/app, dont forget to remove them first. If you remove manualy, you must delete files in /data/app, /data/dalvik-cache, /data/data
EDIT:
This ROM only has gereric mail app. If you want gmail app, also copy gmail.apk
My primary mail account is gmail, but i only use generic email app. Never really needed gmail one.... And all works ok
Thx today i'll try with to add
calendarprovider.apk
googlecalendarsyncadapter.apk
googlecontactssyncadapter.apk
as you said
Thank you very much
Edit:
It works! Thank You very much!
I have a question... Do i need to partition my micro sd for this to work? thanks in advance.
No you don't. This ROM doesn't have a2sd.

Building Milestone Roms

I've been at this for a few weeks, and its bugging me.
I've been looking up on how to build/port ROMs for the Milestone (A853), and there is almost nothing that points me in the right direction. I want to be able to install it via OR's update menu.
This is what I've done so far:
Gotten, and set up HTC Android Kitchen by dsixda.
Downloaded the rom I want to port.
Extracted the rom system and boot images.
Replaced the boot.img-kernel with a stock Milestone boot.img-kernel taken from a nandroid backup. (I know all about the locked bootloader)
Rebuilt the kernel
Modified the build.props
Rebuilt the *.zip
Copied to Open Recovery/updates
Applied update.
So here's where it gets sticky. According to the output, the ROM installs fine. No errors nothing. However, after the first reboot, it goes directly to the bootloader screen with an error of: a5,69,4E,00,23 or something like that.
I'm royally stumped and would really like to get this going in the same way CM or Crono's is installed. Any ideas or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Is that meant to work for the milestone? I dont see milestone listed on supported devices.
Is this the kitchen you are referring to?
ya thats the one i was referring to.
I know its not supported, but I was looking at the outputs of the zips it creates, and comparing them to some ROMs out there (notably CM6.1 and Cronos) and they are pretty much the same. The only thing that I have noticed thats different is that the Milestone doesn't use the updater-script that this particular kitchen generates. So, if I pretty much leave the updater-script alone, it will install, up until I reboot, and I get the error code I mentioned before.
If I let the kitchen generate the updater-script, the installation aborts, usually with a 'Status 4' or 'Status 7' error.

Sorry buddy. I ain't a developer. Try sending a PM to Luca or Kabaldan or Feeyo ( on cronosproject ) and see if they can help.
The boot.img contains kernel and rootfs with init and its scripts. Nothing in it can be directly changed if you want the Milestone to be able to boot.
The kitchen obviously rebuilds the boot.img - err a5,69,4E,00,23 means that the boot.img signature check failed.
You can't do this on Milestone - that's why the sh-hijack + 2nd-init are used in custom compiled ROMs for Milestone to be able to use customized init scripts.

so I'm a little confused...
it seems to me that I should be compiling the kernal with the 2nd-init attack, which confuses me because of the BL issue. or is the stock boot.img used with a customized system.img?
i've tried the latter part, and gotten the noted error.

[Q] init / autorun on stock rooted ROM

Forgive me if this is the wrong place or a stupid question, but I've been looking for days and not finding what I need.
I have ~95 Galaxy tabs, we're rooting them (but leaving them stock) and then executing a rather long script to install software, copy data, uninstall market, disable anything we don't want the employees to access. The last piece of this is I am trying to execute several commands on each boot of the device (some iptables rules need to be re-loaded, couple of other simple commands)
I can't seem to find the init scripts I need to change - ie /init.rc gets recreated every boot losing any changes made, there doesn't seem to be an init.d anywhere, I don't know what support the stock kernel has. I've read so many incorrect (for this ROM) ways to go about running something that I think my eyes crossed.
Any help would be appreciated. And if there's another way for my iptables rules to survive a power-down I can take that as an answer.
so does anyone know if this is *not* possible with the stock kernel? I'm basically out of ideas and have to either scrap the project entirely or get it implemented.
Or, alternately if I'm in the wrong area let me know...

[SCRIPT] ROMCleaner

Had some free time recently so finally got round to opening my OYUA and having a looksy.
ROMCleaner 3.5 works splendid with CWM and OUYA.
Why use it with the OUYA?
Its a fast and easy way to pre-install all your apps and games through a single zip flash in CWM.
No more sideloading Dropbox to download and install everytime you flash a new StockPlus or OTA, have them all ready and waiting for you upon the first boot of the ROM.
If your familiar with ROMCleaner on one of the many devices we ported it to, you'll feel right at home!
As certain design decisions were overlooked with the OUYA and it didt get the following it was expected, I didnt wont make a big deal aout the release but couldnt help playing about with to see what I could get working on it. It worked fine so here we are
Notes
More detaililed guides and instructions can be found in any of the device specific threads for ROMCleaner if you want to have a look at its features but for now Ill leave this little guide for us OUYA users.
I doubt there will be a Aroma version due to its reliance on touch input but will slowly be looking at going through the other individual tools we created before Patrics83 put the Aroma AIO toolkit together.
It starts at v3.5 as this was the last version before moving to Aroma and we kept that consistent across devices.
Any changes will only be visually to the updater-script and the default romcleaner.txt included in the zip as at its core, RC works. I will keep a dated chagelog for you though for any updates to the zip.
Basic Guide
Pre-Requisetes:ClockworkMod Recovery
On your on the root of /sdcard create a (case sensitive) folder structure as so:
Code:
/sdcard/ROMCleaner/FirstBoot/data/app/
/sdcard/ROMCleaner/FirstBoot/system/app/
Place any apks in these folders which you want installed after flashing in the relevent folders
After flashing the ROM, flash ROMCleaner 3.5.zip
Reboot as normal
First boot of the ROM will take extra time due to the apks being sorted by Android when its up and running you will find all the apps in the usual place all ready and waiting!
If you install another launcher I recommend loading OUYA Launcher first and following the setup (wifi, username etc) to get it all sorted before using your preferred launcher.
You can use RC to install other files such as bootanimation.zip (system/media/) as well and are not limited to just apks. I add TwitcyEye's KeyMap mod for example so the mapping is done with no copying files about.
It will set the correct permissions for all the files and folders so dont worry about that.
Cleaning
ROMCleaner has the ability to remove files from the system after the ROM has been flashed, but before first boot, using a text file in a simple user-friendly format.
The default list has not been optimized for OUYA and I have not got round to checking through it yet. I haven't noticed any thing important if it does but you have been warned Ill take a proper look when I get the time.
You have the ability to define a custom list for RC to use by creating a ROMCleaner_user.txt file in /sdcard/ROMCleaner/ and Ive attached a blank one with some detailed instructions on its layour and format. I recommend you use this file until I have time to cross reference the default list with the OUYA files to avoid anything being deleted.
All in all its an easy way to get your apps installed when flashing a ROM be it StockPlus or an official OTA. It requires no special access as its all done in recovery and uses its own busybox.
Anyway, Have a play and let me know how it works for you.
Like a lot of people on XDA I have very little free time these days due to my job and so-called life but will be keeping my eye on this thread and the OUYA in general

Is ROMcleaner able to load any type of complete backups from Titanium Backup or Android Tuner? I'm sure the answer is on your site, but it is probably a question a lot of people will have.

Unfortunately thats a completely different thing. All this is done in recovery where as TB etc are app specific done while the OS is up and running.
RC installs (and can remove) the apps before the OS has loaded for the first time.
