[Q] any ROMs that dont use setirons kernel? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So Im not really a fan of the setiron kernel because it KILLS my battery. It is fast as hell but not that much faster than the AOSP ver. Im not knocking it because it is a really nice/fast rom. Just generally curious if there are other roms that do not use setirons kernel. Seems like all the ROMs now are using his kernel.

I agree about the battery life thing, the only ones I know of are aospmod, and cognition.

Use Spaceman
By far, the best rom with captivate kernel is SpaceMan. Fast and bugs free.

right. thats the one i use now and have been for a while. i just like to try the different ones out there. spaceman is the shiz for sure tho.

As long as whatever rom you want to use isnt based on i9000 (Might work but i've never tried) you can you use 7 zip to take the spaceman zimage and drop it in the rom before flashing

hows the batt. life with the cogkernel? i notice a few are using it in combo with the aospmod

I've only been using it since yesterday lol, but it seems just as good as stock so far

I had that experience but found it was ROM specific... Check out the Assurance 2.0 ROM from MikeyMike... Great ROM fast smooth and stable, with Setiron.

[Q] Stable ROM

Hello I recently restored my Captivate thanks to the people that helped me yesterday but I need to know the most stable Froyo ROM out I had Darky's Captivate ROM and that failed and my phone became a brick. Thanks for the help.
If your looking for stability stay away from the new 2.2.1 roms (JPX, JPU, & JPY) and stay away from overclocked roms too. From my personal experience, Di11igafs rom (version 2.5, not 3.0) was really good. It comes overclocked but its easy to remove with the voltage control app. I got good battery life, wifi worked, good reception, and even gps was better than normal. I also hear from others and from reading the entire thread that Mikey's Assonance 5.0 is pretty stable. It's a NO BS rom and many people like it. Hope this helped.
Thanks for the help I was on 2.2.1 lol and my phone just flat out died I will try them
I have safely used Cognition, Auxura, and Assonance. Currently on Assonance and although it is an i9000 OC ROM I haven't had any issues.

Why wouldn't you want to run the latest up to date froyo build?
Nothing wrong with mildly overclocked roms either, i've been running at 1200mhz for a while with no side effects. Sure trying to run the phone at 1500mhz might give you some issues... but i have yet to find a rom that isn't stable, and i've pretty much tried them all.
champ0497: how exactly did darky's rom brick your phone?
Cronus is my flavor of the day. It is a minimalistic rom that is very stable and fast.
See the ROM in my signature. U could use the same version, or the v2.5. Been pretty stable. Also have working GPS.
I have used both cognition 2.6 and Assonance 5. Both are very stable but Assonance wins hands down for being fast. It would be my recommendation

If you use your phone for work and hange no backup flashing roms can be risky. Make sure you read allot prior to flashing. There is no one answer

I suggest you you a captivate based ROM.. probably Cognition 2.3b8! it is highly stable and totally captivate based! If you want to go furthur than captivate based there are many I9000 based ROMs... I suggest Darkyy's 8.0 ROM with Hardcore's speedmod kernel and UGJL2 Modem...
I've always wondered what is the advantage to a i9000 based ROM?
It seems like people are running into functionality problems, but aren't really getting any additional features...

That just is not the case. The i9000 roms are built from official froyo release for a galaxy s phone. Re-oriented kernels fix compatibility with the captivate. Performance is vastly improved over stock and our captivate leaked froyo. Look at the development section. There is only one captivate based rom. There are multiple i9000 roms. This is not by random chance.
Everyone can choose what they want running on their phone, or what they are comfortable with. People saying i9000 roms do not improve on anything obviously have never ran a good one

It's just the opposite.
i9000 ROMs offer:
-Improved speed
-Faster network speeds
-An abundance of themes, mods, etc. in the i9000 section
-No trace of AT&T and their filthy apps
-Android 2.2.1
-We have the kernel source for Froyo for i9000
That's just off the top of my head.

About 2.2.1

Just wanted to ask a little question about 2.2.1
I am currently on JP3 (i think) and have currently got a lagfix enabled...
Just wondering how much the performance would differ if I upgrade to 2.2.1...
Lots of people tell me that stock roms are better than custom roms as they have pretty much better performance and battery.. But is this only for if you are on 2.2.1 ?
Thanks

well 2.2.1 is the best firmware Samsung has come up with.
if they tell you that then it only shows that they don't know much.

I was on stock 2.1 + OCLF for a long time. Basically that combination served me well until more and more apps require 2.2+. Then I tried some of the custom roms, settled on one of them, and never looked back.
Custom roms are fast, battery friendly, you get a lot of different options on what you want to do with your phone. Custom roms are very stable now, so if you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty, go try'em out. Most of the roms also have a good supporting community so if you run into problem you will find help instantly.
xwjs5 is best
Throw a stock JS5 on there and let us know what you think. (Try it without a lagfix even) Pretty solid stuff.
There's also some pretty solid custom rom's as well. That's the beauty of Android. You have the freedom to taste the fruits.

best custom rom

so recently i flahed darkys 10.2 EE by the way it was my first time flashing custom roms however the rom started up very fast and it was very stable but after two days it started laging and randomly frezzing and reboting when using TW launcher some time when playing games, any ways i want a suggestion for another rom to flash which is stable fast and can use tw 4

I'll second surface. Seems to be one of the more stable JVR roms out there. Just make sure you follow the flashing instructions to the letter or you'll have problems.
I think the question is - why a custom rom? What do you want in a custom rom? Look through the specs and make your choice. For me, stock JVR, rooted with twlauncher 4.5 from frogger. does everything I want.

Try galaxy sense 0.6.
Experience htc sense on your galaxy. For those of you who think they are stuck with samsungs touchwiz, try this htc sense 2.1 it's infinitely better (in my opinion ).
This rom is work in progress but i have just tried it and is getting very close to my experience on my old htc desire. There are a few bugs as of now but the developer appears to be getting very close to a complete version.
Try it, there will be no going back!!

Tornado ROM JVR (look in my signature to get it)
The first and fastest ODEX based JVR Custom ROM
Contains a addon app so you get to decide what app stays and what goes. (remove and add feature)
Combined with the Tornado kernel it is pretty damm quick and responsive.
Supports ext2 / ext4 / rfs
CWM now converts to ext2 and has the goodies like OC / OV
Hello,
I started a thread like this a couple of days ago and then decided to whack on Galnet MIUI. I gotta tell u, i love this ROM, I don't think I'll ever change from it. The reason why I didn't get it before was that you needed Froyo bootloaders but with the new 'twooey' named ROM, you can just install it like any other gingerbread ROM.
It's really quick, amazingly customisable. The themes are great and all the new features leaves your phone feeling like a brand new thing, you have to explore all the options and settings again.
Before this ROM, I'd tried most gingerbread ROMs and I prefer this by far.
Anyway, hope you find the ROM your looking for

No it's definetely not laggy.
As for the battery, I've seen a lot worse. I mean, It's not great, but you can still get 1 1/2 days out of it with moderate usage. But bare in mind my battery isnt fully calibrated yet, I'm hoping it will go up to 2-3 days after a few charging session.
I would say, make sure you give it a go before making your mind up about it.
Another plus for it is it's based on CyanogenMod which means it's constantly in development whereas Samsung based ROMs more or less have to wait for Samsung to release new beta roms to continue development in the same way.

Thanks for yor help but i think am gona wait until they fix the camera problem then am gona flash it and i hope that it will be great

Which ROM you use and why?

For me:
SAMSUNG GALAXY S i9000
Blockbuster 4.0 JVR Magnificent
GalaxianGT SP2 Kernel
FW: I9000XXJVR -> Android 2.3.4
and why? Because blacktheme in Blockbuster is good for battery life and galaxian kernel is one of the faster
I was on blockbuster and I also liked it because of the dark theme, but after I saw that CM switched to gingerbread bootloaders I gave first CM a try and was impressed, then I tried MIUI and it makes the SGS totally new, so I will stay with MIUI now, I have also a very black theme .
Juwes 5.2 JVQ with Semaphore 1.5 JVR at 1.2 GHz and GingerWay BlueOcean RC theme (The best theme around). So far the best of all the worlds.
Smooth Fast and Super-stable. No FCs what so ever. All apps are working as they should. Also I deleted some system apps to make it light.
Only one word for it.... Beautiful!!!!
MIUI
Galnet MIUI Couse its stable fast and extremly easy to theme'
I actually use DarkyROM, because of the theme, it's really nice!
Also like Symply GSII
So this thread will be to develop an all-hybrid rom , gathered sources from every other ROM out there?
seriously if you don't know where (more like how) to post on a forum, just don't.
I personally love the look of GalnetMIUI, and love the speed of Darky 10.2... but currently im JUST using a rooted copy of UGKG3 w/ TW4.5 by fragg0r. Simple, effective. And my battery life is insane. 24hrs later, 10% loss w/ some calling, a lot of texting, and listening to music.

I am not happy with the new ROMs that pop up on XDA. It seems like everyone makes a ROM because they can, and none offer anything exciting/new, barring a few of course. I'm on Simply Honey JVP ROM, but I'm looking for a suitable replacement.

DarkyROM 10.2 EE with Darkcore 2.9.3 kernel
Why1: because I wanted to start fresh and DarkyROM 10.2. EE had it all in one nice zip package bundled with Odin. The installation was pretty straightforward http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-darkyrom-10-2-resurrection-gt-i9000.4272/
Why2: because the official Cyanogenmod is still at RC for the SGS and its guides to install are not so user friendly. I followed http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide and to my stupidity I paid little attention to "This guide assumes the Samsung Galaxy S already has Android 2.2 installed on it" and flashed the wrong kernel and then did not have SGS booting for a while, freaking me out, until I installed an Android 2.3.x compatible bootloader.

Unfortunately there isnt a custom kernel that works with UGKG3, BUT when i use a custom rom i prefer Galaxian or simply just SpeedMod. I prefer those two because they have less issues when i use them, and they're stable and fast.
