What app do I use to make my phone act as a router and/or tether? I can't find Tether Wifi in the market... is there another app you recommend? I do not live in a 3g area... this would be only used at a beach house with no internet... I realize edge is slower but its better than nothing. Is this possible?

Any advice on pimping out the G1? I saw a video on youtube where the guys dialer was large rectangular buttons, maybe purple too... how do you get this? (better keyboard?) I've been looking at Teds Hero Theme, waiting on a version for Cyan 3.6.8.1. Do I need to delete open home after/before a theme, does not seem like it will be of any use after I do this hero theme from Ted, right?

Okay, so I took the plunge (for me it was a plunge) and was surprised just how easy it was to root, using the instructions from this site.

-1-
What is the recovery.img file that is used in that manual, and do I need another one if I am using Cyanogens (v3.6.8.1) stable rom?
-2-
I saw at one point a thread that had the names of common items and what they meant but can't find it (ie, why I dont know why what a img file is or does). Can anyone shed some light on this, or know where that thread is?
-3-
The manual also made it seem like I needed to load a JF build. After my root I went straight to cyanogen. Does this matter? Did I lose something by not doing JF first? Is there a backup anywhere (other than the files I moved from my SD card to my computer before formatting it)?
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.
-5-
Finally, I need to partition my card to take advantage of apps2sd on his rom.... what is the best way to do this? I really need help on this one.
-6- (okay, so 5 was not final)
What are all the cool apps that come with this rom.... anywhere I can go to learn more about how to use them?

Its fine that you went straight to cyanogens rom. Its good to load cyanogens new recovery (1.4), its in the pimped out recovery and all instructions are in there. There are different ways to partition a sd card, the way I do mine is thru Ubuntu (tuturial is in my sig). Wifi tether for root users is what allows your phone to act as a router. Theres alot of cool apps, you just got to play with them to figure them out or narrow down what your trying to find out. And theres a search feature, use that or be flamed if you ask repeated questions.

Get cyan pimped out recovery. The instructions are fool proof how to dow it.
-2-
I saw at one point a thread that had the names of common items and what they meant but can't find it (ie, why I dont know why what a img file is or does). Can anyone shed some light on this, or know where that thread is?
Look in the informative thread sticky in the dev subforum
-3-

No, it's cool that you went straight to cyan. See when that guide was written those were the most popular roms that's why they are there.
-4-
Do I need to load any other cyanogen things on my phone? On his thread it lists things like Audio resources, pimped out recovery image, etc.
I would load the Audio resources since those are your ringtones and notification tones. Though if you plan on making your own it isn't really necessary. As for the recovery image you should definitely download. The instructions are easy and simple so just read.
-5-
Finally, I need to partition my card to take advantage of apps2sd on his rom.... what is the best way to do this? I really need help on this one.
Not to be mean but... Seriously??? It's a sticky in this subforum....

Always search first, and if you can't find it search again. Don't just search 1 subforum. Believe me the answers are out there.
Yeah, I promise I do search, but again I just kinda seem to go from one thing to another and then I realize there are several ways to do the same thing.
Regarding the partition, no offense taken... but I'm not comfortable enough with the process so thought I would try and get more guidance than what I can find in the several threads with different methods.

I see where you are coming from since I too am a noob. So I'm guessing you're rooted and have a custom rom installed already. Soo here is the guide I used to partition my SD card. It is a very, self-explanatory guide. I have no computer programming background and this guide made it seem easy to me. You're going to need cyan's pimped out recovery. Like I said just find that thread and it has the directions to install it. As for apps, I found what I thought was cool browsing the app forum here and on androidcommunity.com

Exactly that... its a backup of basically your entire phone from the point that you created the backup, if you happen to flash another ROM and you don't like it, or it breaks, you can hit the restore option and return to this moment in time for you phone.
Holy crap that was a ton of questions... but ye as the other guys said just search the forum, all of the questions you asked have been answered.

bare with me ONE MORE Q RE: NANDROID
I have created a nandroid backup, copied the folder from my SD card to my computer for emergencies.
If I add a new ROM and wipe.... how would I restore my phone? The backup I created would be erased from the phone right? And the backup on my computer would be from another rom, does that matter (assuming no, but I dont know the first thing about how to restore my phone from doing a wipe).
Thank you all... incredible forum.

when you wipe everything on your sd remains only data from the phones internal is wiped, so as long as you didnt delete it from sd after backing up to computer your good. Also worse come to worse you can use a card reader to get it on there..
As far as your settings and stuff reseting, thats why some people get to lazy to wipe you can try my backuppro (i use this) or backup for root (dont know to much about) to back up your settings, bookmarks, sms, and contacts if youd like. Note though that your contacts and all that will come back after signing back into google, and your apps will also remain on the sd..
^ ahh... completely forgot that the SD card was left intact after a wipe. That makes perfect sense and thank you thank you. I have backup for root now but will go to the market and try your app. THank you!

There are several how to videos you can find. Look for one click root if you only want to root. It is about as easy as you get. It was created by TGA Gunman. Or you can search for the Clockworkmod update.zip and place that in the root of your SD card. Then you would be able to install a Rom without actually needing to root your phone first.
Also please make sure to post questions in the proper section. You will have the wolves after you for posting a general question in dev

captivates are difficult to brick, but not impossible
I just got my first REAL smartphone, actually it’s still on FedEx truck.
From reading the stickies on this forum, here’s what I gathered so far (and I am starting from scratch – nothing on my phone yet)
1) Root my phone with the ‘OneClick’ tool.
2) Install ROM (I am thinking Cognition, since it’s recommended for beginner).
3) Install Theme (haven’t decide on one yet) – any suggestions?
So, am I missing anything?
You seem to have a good grasp on what you are doing. I do recommend buying/making a Jig to have around just in case.
You're well on your way.
Make sure and read up on bootloaders and the difference between 2.1/2.2 and 2.3 bootloaders as getting this wrong is the main thing that can lead to "big" trouble.
Also take a look at Odin, Odin One Click return to stock and make sure and know the difference between those and the Odin One Click w/3 Button Combo.
thanks guys, i think i have a good idea of what i want to do but i am still struggling to find the details to do the above.
for example, what difference if my phone batch is 1010, or 1012, or older?
do i need to get an microsd card, if so what size/brand?
what sofware do i need to download?
etc, etc. etc.
i will continue to browse through the forums, but if you know of any links please post.
also, what does the jig do? do i need to have one?
thanks
First decide what u want to do, As u stated first root the phone and then u want a custom ROM, So go ahead and try it.
Only thing i will advice start from a froyo rom then to the gingerbread as there would be less chances to brick your phone while flashing the b.loades.
Read the OP properly of the ROM which you want to flash there are many good froyo rom available here. But just be sure what u are doing.
Please for the love of all things unholy, read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049294
and if the phone comes with froyo you will need this after rooting before flashing a rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
At the start DEFINITE GUIDE TO BRICKING, LOL.
Its just a joke be sure you read it all.

thanks, yes from what i've read it's better to stay away from the gingerbread roms - at least for novice like myself.
My personal favorite were Firefly 3.0 and serendipity 6.4 links below.

Again i will say read the OP carefully before flashing.
I have a few Captivates in the family and IMHO the first thinkg to do before flashing anything is to purchase Root Explorer in the market (for around $4) then back up your EFS folder (in the main directory) and save it to a cd so you ALWAYS have a hard copy of it. These files are specific to your phone and if they get screwed up during flashing, you phone may not be able to be used as a phone anymore. The back up copy will save you.
All of the above stuff is good. I was a noob about 6 months ago but I spent hours upon hours of reading and watching videos about flashing and moding. Good luck!

the OP is the original post or poster, like your first question is the op, and you are also the op of the thread. in that context he meant the original post, because that will have most of the information about the rom...but i would expand on that to read the op and the a couple of pages in, and also if its a large thread with alot of posts read atleast the LAST 5 or 6 pages also.
anymore terms you are unfamiliar with read the op of this thread carefully: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093062
thanks for clarying.
just got my phone in the mail.
i looked at the batch number under the battery slot and it shows 1106.
does this mean i have version 2.1 or 2.2? what would be the appropriate app/tool for rooting?
thanks
The batch had nothing to do with the firmware....that just means your phone was built in june of 2011. But since it's a new phone it more than likely has 2.2 confirm this in settings>about phone> firmware version.
Use super one click to root.
BUT FIRST PLEASE READ SOME MORE.
All of the information you are looking is already on here at the very least twice probably WAY more.
it is indeed version 2.2
so i read the first page of this thread and also watched the youtube clip. it looks straight enough to root. but i got a question. should i run the universal root or the captivate root?

I would use SuperOneClick to root 2.2, however, the only version that was successful for me was version 1.6.5. The newer versions gave me errors or said FAILED when trying to root. For me, it has always worked with 1.6.5
thanks, but i only see v1.7 and v1.95. where can i get v1.65?
also, i do not need the samsung driver for rooting right? only for flashing?

You should have the driver installed on your computer for anything you do with the phone. Make sure after you install drivers to plug in your phone to the computer in all the different modes it has - in debugging mode, not in debug mode, in download mode, and connecting as an external drive. The computer will install all the drivers when you do this.
I will try to attach v1.6.5 of Super One CLick. I hope it's ok with the moderators here that I am posting the software. Just unzip the folder and double click the android icon in that folder.
hi guys
theres probably a bunch of threads on here that could help me, but ive searched for ages and i realised that i dont exactly know what im looking for.
so here's my problem.
i recently bought a droid 3 secondhand that was already rooted.
but today i thought id be cool and delete some of the stock apps.
but in doing that, i deleted a lot of important apk files.
i desperately need to know how i can fix it.
should i unroot it?
if so, how do i go about doing that?
or should i install a rom?
if so, how do i go about doing that?
also, i have a mac.
i tried connecting the droid to the mac but nothing seems to happen.
when i pull down the navigation bar it says
PC something
windows media sync something
usb mass storage
charge only
so yeh.
i really need some help.
i just want to fix what ive ruined and start over.
Okay step one: Relax.
All you need to do to return your phone to stock is "SBF" it. Check out this thread, look for Mac instructions. Cheers.

After this, don't delete apk's, especially system ones. Either look for a debloated ROM, which is pretty much every one in the Development section, or use Titanium Backup, from the marketplace, to freeze them.
Steel Droid is a good place to start, the dev also offers a really detailed way to install a custom ROM.

Hey, I was updating my rogers captivate through the kies software from 2.2 to 2.3 and the software stopped at 34% for 2 hours...so I quit the program and unplugged my phone. When I reset the battery, and turned on my phone, there is a weird pc!phone icon and I cant get the phone to work. I am not sure what I should do now... I never rooted the phone or added any custom ROMs to it. And my 1 year warranty is up. Please help and thanks!
You are soft bricked. If none of the methods found here work to get in to dl mode you need a jig. Don't ever use kies.
i can get into dl mode, but i have no clue what to do with it :S
You can send it for warranty since it broke with kies (assuming you don't mod it). Or fix it yourself with ODIN.
is there a guide that I can follow to address this problem?
Nope, there are definitely no guides to help on this site.

so what you are saying is that you are incapable of comprehending the DOWNLOAD mode and the ONE CLICKS to get you back to stock so that you could load a rom???
i mean, cmon, you have to learn how to educate yourself a little bit. nobody here is going to hold your fkng hand and spoonfeed you this info....
there is literally a PLETHORA of knowledge on these forums, all you have to do is learn and try to UNDERSTAND what it is telling you to do. Not just blindly follow some tutorial/walkthrough/video that doesnt explain WHAT you are doing.....
this site does not exist as support for stupidity or laziness. it is here to HELP people that are willing to HELP THEMSELVES.....
Don't know what is the big issue. You want to go to STOCK not flash a rom. Just follow the instruction of the 3rd link until step 10. Done finish stock. If its a 1 click its even easier. There are a ton of stickies. Flashing can screw up your phone if you don't know what you are doing.
Edit: PirateGhost beat me to it....
if i was a noob, and i just 'bricked' my phone doing something stupid, yes, i would panic. i would search google, which would bring me here to xda and i would search and figure out what i needed to do. this is because i do not need anyone holding my hand for anything. but before discounting anyone's assistance it would behoove me to do a little damn research and by the power of deduction realize what it is EXACTLY that i need to do.....
Okay, so I followed the 3rd guide and I am stuck on step 13 for the odin method. I cannot find a ROM inside Onix Recovery, so can I download any ROM and put it into the EXTERNAL sd card? or does it have to be inside the INTERNAL sd? because I cannot access the internal sd card. Also, is it normal for my phone to have the AT&T World Phone logo at boot? because I am from Rogers...and not AT&T. Will this affect my phone in the future? thanks
