Has anyone noticed the circle to the left of the "N" button? Is this a proximity sensor? If not, what is it? Any ideas?
Looks like a ambient light sensor or something the like. Maybe on a future upgrade new features will include self adjusting backlight
I noticed this too and was going to post. It appears to be an ambient light sensor, but it's not in use. It seems rather large though..
I noticed this too, and thought it would be cool if when you closed the flap on your case (if you got a flip-case) and you were reading a book, it automatically bookmarks the page you're on and pauses your music or something.
Just thought that would be neat.
Hmm... I don't see the 'circle' on mine... i don't suppose this is something you can take a picture of?

WOW WTF MINE DOESNT HAVE ONE!! ?? I dropped my camera and its lens is broken now so I can't take a picture, but it's solid black, completely smooth and no noticeable 'circle'
Go hold it up facing a light (especially daylight ) and you'll see it.

If you have the "spare parts" app installed , you can get to the brightness settings that let you select "automatic".
With battery life being an issue on ereaders in general, I'm surprised they don't have it set to automatic by default.

But does it actually work? I've been able to set the backlight to automatic but it just dims and never changes. I even tried flashing a light into the sensor, but didn't get any change.

Ouch, you're right. I also tried running sensor test and it sees a light sensor but the reading shows a steady zero no matter what the actual light conditions are. Perhaps the driver for it isn't enabled and they plan to use it in a future release?

Its there. Trust me. You just aren't under the correct lighting conditions to see it. It's designed to be "invisible".

Does anyone else also wish there was a xenon photo flash accessory for X1? I used to have one for my W800i and it worked great. Not sure why there is a complete absence of these for WM devices. I think iPhone's getting one.
I've considered rewiring the W800 flash, but it seems like a mostly impossible task.
I've also searched for registry entries to make the photo light brighter (impossible?) when pictures are taken, but came up empty.
Anyone else have any bright ideas?

Rewiring them won't work. Increasing the brightness on the built-in LED will destroy your phone.
You could buy a separate flash device, but those are fsking expensive.
Best option: Don't use X1 for proper photo's, buy a camera.
sure, i have another camera, but it's not always in my pocket when i'm at the pub at 1am and a kodak moment arises!
anyway, increasing the led brightness for 200 milliseconds is quite unlikely to destroy the phone. (increaing it for 5 minutes is the cause of melted housings etc and that's a different story). i just doubt it's possible outside of some pretty fancy programming, and it may even be impossible.
but if anyone had suggestions for how to increase led brightness when the flash discharges, i'd be willing to be the sacrificial lamb.
Ha ha... well is seems like damn near nobody is interested in a xenon flash. Guess I got my answer as to why no one manufactures such an accessory!

Yeah, me too. Wish there was a built in xenon flash but as far as I know there's not a single WinMo device with such a thing.
Iphone has (or will have) a case that has a built in xenon flash, which would be nice.
I have an electrical engineering friend specializing in LED technology so maybe I'll ask what would happen if we doubled the voltage going through the X1 LED for 200 ms. Still I would have no idea how to make it happen. Maybe I could ask the guy who made hTorch...
I'm interested
Hi, I'm interested too, in fact, I'm interested in anything that can make my Xperia Camera better, I make a post here:

Try to aks your friend quickly, I think that is possible and do not damage the xperia because it is just I little
Theres already a power mode function which is currently provided by hTorch tool.
In my opinion the led gets extremely bright when activating this.
Ontop i think, that the htc cam soft needs led support.

Well I have to send my X1 to have the LED repaired anyway, because it shifted position, so I'd be happy to torture test the LED to see how high it can go. But I bet that changing brightness during a picture would mean changing a dll file or something, and that's beyond my abilities.

i only notice it in less than ideal situations..Like something im filming is dark but there is light present on the edges behind me..Sometimes it's green too
i get this all the time..happens only on the edges of the pictures or video. i believe this might be only happening when you are taking pictures under those fluorescent light bulbs(energy savers) ..reason why i say this is because it only happens when I'm indoors and not using flash. does anyone know if this is a camera issue or is it just those damn light bulbs ???...my place is dimly lit with one light bulb...
I just want to be sure we're having the same problem. I attached some screenshots of what I'm talking about, and as you can see, Zoe has to be enabled. My take is Zoe does it because it's a "video."

Im willing to bet there is a computer monitor some where very close to you in this picture because that is when I noticed it as well...I lower manually the ISO to help eliminate too much unwanted noise.
EDIT: Deeerp just saw the keyboard in the 1st pic so obviously there is a monitor near by...I have had this happen out doors at night as well though..If you get away from the light source on the edges it should help.
There is, but it also happened in the hallway when I was messing around with Zoe.
Alright, just happy to hear it's a software issue . I was hoping I didn't have to return my phone...so much time spent into setting it up!

Wanted to see if anyone elses' X does this.
Go into a dark/pitch black room.
Face down your phone and pick it up / get the AN to trigger.
Watch your screen after the AN fades out.
Does your whole screen go through a wavy/flicker effect? Lasts about 1 second. Looks slightly grey/brownish. Not so noticeable when it's bright out.
I have noticed this. I wanted to see if the active notification pixels were the only ones lighting up and I think they are. However, there is that brief moment that the whole screen is emitting enough light to be noticeable.
Ya I have noticed this too but only in very dark rooms. I'm not to worried; battery life is great for my usage.

I've got the exact same problem, but its only noticiable in very dark rooms, but still it sucks.
I have find this app, it's the same as Motos Active Screen, but it doesn't flicker for me.

You will need the paid version to get all options though.

Just a heads up. ?
I have auto brightness turned off. The screen looks great when I wake the phone up, but if it's a sunny day and I wake it up the screen comes on strong and then immediately dims. I only see this happen when it's sunny. Am I missing a setting somewhere?
Thanks.

try using lux for me it's too bright at night time burns my eye
I noticed this too, also is to bright at night if i am reading in bed
The brightness isn't the issue for me... The issue is the noticeable dimming in direct sunlight.
Again, I do not have auto-brightness turned on yet I still experience noticeable screen dimming in sunlight.
Anyone have any idea why it might be doing this?

Yes it does.
Glad to see this thread. I only noticed it once but I thought I was imagining it. Yeah it drops the brightness off by a decent margin which makes no sense. For me, it's still usable in sunlight but the full brightness would be better. I have auto brightness turned off as well as attentive display. Dunno what it is.

Yes. Give it a try and you'll see. It's really weird and it doesn't make any sense because it should be just the opposite of anything. But since I have it set to manual brightness it shouldn't do anything at all. Go figure...

Thanks, I haven't checked. Based on others' recommendations I downloaded Lux from the market and I am extremely happy with the feature set. After playing with it for a bit I immediately purchased the full version to support the dev. I'm impressed!
I'm down! Mine does it too. 21.21.12 holdout also. "Lux pro" works great.
I just got my unit. I can get a spining white ring on the front facing camera when I lift to wake with face unlock, but I can not find the option to turn it on for phone calls and messages etc.... I get edge lighting for 10 seconds or so.. I would love to have this option as I saw it active on a random video but I cant find the video again... I am fully updated with the software as well... does anybody have any ideas or know how to enable this feature? Thx!
Not a feature (yet) we all hope that Samsung will do it...
On reddit the consensus is this is a feature that would be in a future update. I saw screenshots from Samsung support confirming this.

The options he gave are still helpful for now though, as not only can you enable the rear flash, but the front screen to flash yellow when you receive a message. It's something at least for now. I just hope Samsung pushes out an update to enable the ring around the camera to be used. Just makes total sense since they removed the LED notification. :fingers-crossed:

An update got pushed to my S10e just a bit ago. Might be the one you wanted?
Circle of Light does not exist. The only thing that exist is the possibility as this is the actual screen and not any special hardware. The same edge lighting like concept can be used to illuminate pixels around the camera. If samsung does not do something, let them release the source and give us access to api's. we can do it ourselves. We just need to modify the edge lighting feature to shrink it to camera cutout and increase timings etc. I am feeling so lost without the notification LED. My pre order does not have a cancellation option. If I had I would have cancelled.
Will the ring light has potential burn in risk?
Should be. If you closely take a look at the camera cutout and the front camera animation, you'd see it's a part of the actual screen. So, It have amoled burn in risk unless or if samsung can access the pixels through hardware directly without actually turning on the whole screen.
