android-wifi-tether and various ROMs - Wildfire Android Development

PROBLEM SOLVED, See below
Hi all,
I'm getting seriously confused with android-wifi-tether not working! Basically i have tried various custom ROMs (all Android 2.1) and various versions of wifi tether. I've even installed jacobs newer kernels.
There are no errors when i start tether. But when i connect with a laptop (tried many) the laptop goes through the motion of connecting successfully, the phone does not acknowledge the laptops connection and the laptop does not get a proper IP address.
I checked it out with Logcat, no errors on android-wifi-tether start, and when a computer connects, no logs are generated at all.
It has been working on the phone when i was running Wildpuzzle 2.1 1.0.0 i reverted to the rom but still nothing.
I've always installed a fresh rom with a full wipe also.
Whats interesting is i flashed my other halfs wildfire and it has the same issue (although not tried a variety of roms on it).
If anyone has any suggestions or ways of diagnosing. I would really appreciate it!!
There is something lingering somewhere on the phone.
Many Thanks, Dan

My kernel only fixes it for 2.2 ROMs (and not Sense atm)
No luck if you're on 2.1, sorry.

I had this problem on 2.1 and had to find a new bin file as described in /code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/Setup_HTC_Desire_Incredible. After I did this it all worked OK.
I now use Cyangenmod 6.1 RC2 Build 41 and use the internal Froyo 2.2 Wifi tether and it works just fine. ( Thanks Jacob )

Didn't think that would work for 2.1 but I was clearly wrong xD

i had to also run the
Code:
ip route add table gprs 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.254
is there anyway this fix can be included with 2.1 roms automatically?

Looks like i spoke to soon, gets an IP now and the phone acknowledges the connection but i cannot ping anything from the laptop :S

It appears if i run
Code:
ip route add table gprs 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.254.
once tethering has been started it begins to work and the laptop can download.
Any ideas?

Problem fixed!!
I thought i'd share:
I edited
/data/data/android.tether/bin/fixroute.sh
after the sleep 2
and before the done at the end of the file i added
Code:
/system/bin/ip route add table gprs 192.168.2.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.2.254
I also modified the sleep to 10, just in case it need a few seconds for eth0 to kick in.
Works perfectly and everytime.
Of course you need to do it everytime you install the binaries.

Cant connect to wlan with CM and AOPS roms

I cannot connect to my wlan-network with the CM6/AOSP roms. When I try it always turns from connect to scan. With earlier Version it worked, like Cronos 1.5, but 1.6 wont work. I tried with CM6 from today, Cronos 1.6 and The Froyo mod 2.1. I want one of them, but without wifi it is not acceptable.
to what channel are u connecting?
My Router is showing me channel 8
Should not be a problem really. Maybe you need to post some more info .
Hm... Maybe someone can say what has changed in wifi settings since cronos 1.5 to 1.6.
The wlan network has wpa/wpa2-psk key and its a Dlink dir 615.
Please help!
I'm having the same issue. CM hasn't worked for a while now, and Cronos 1.5 is the last version that worked for me.
I can offer the following decision of this problem:
In RootExplorer(via Open in text editor) it is opened tiwlan.ini (~/etc/wifi), we search for line WiFiAdhoc=1, we change 1 on 0 and... All works, I am simple before is banal substituted tiwlan.ini from cronos, then having transversed on both for comparing have seen that in cyanogen the mode a computer-computer is included (т.е Adhoc) switch-off has brought the positive result
P.S Sorry for my English
Thanks so much. I'll try that and post my results.

This worked for me after changing my disk setting back to RO in Root Explorer and rebooting. Thanks!
Thanks it worked
Can I take it as confirmed that WiFiAdhoc set to 0 solves the wifi issues at least for some users?
If it is the case, I will disable it again in the next build.
(And I'd be glad to be notified about such important findings in the future, thank you very much.)
I'm not sure any more. I had cronos 1.5, tried 1.6.1, didn't work, switched to cm 11.27, didn't work, retried cronos 1.6 only go get the motorola bootloop. Reloaded the GOT SBF, put cronos 1.5 on it, setup wifi, didn't do a full wipe (only the cache's), upgraded to cronos 1.6.1 and its now working fine with ad-hoc enabled. I'm not sure if it's the Got reload that did it, or what, but it's working now. If the issue re-appears, I'll do a more thorough investigation to see if some of the other potential solutions, like deleting /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf, resolves this problem.
I tried this and it still doesn't work.. I just can't connect to my router.. I tried every settings, all types of protection, nothing works, even changing that WifiAdhoc think on 0 in Root explorer.. I'll try Cronos 1.5 if you say it works there, but I see a problem in new 2.2.1 SBF..

cronos 1.5 consistently worked for me.
Have you tried all of these? In particular, delete /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf, do a full wipe, and re-install the rom.
kabaldan said:
There are several issues open for it, you can get there some valuable information.
I'd start with the advise given here (delete /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf):
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod4milestone/issues/detail?id=204
Also:
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod4milestone/issues/detail?id=234
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod4milestone/issues/detail?id=147
You can try to change the options in /etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini - HT_Enable and WiFiAdhocA
If it will turn out that the WiFiAdhoc enabled is breaking the wifi for some users (it works perfectly for me), I'll disable it again in the next build. But I have not got any clear reports on the issue tracker that would suggested it yet.
Hopefully, the wifi issues will be fixed in the final Motorola's froyo kernel build. Custom compiled tiwlan_drv.ko kernel module causes kernel panic (as the ext2, tun, cifs and nfs modules). When the Motorola's kernel sources become available, it will be easier to try some fixes in this area.

I really don't know what to say.
I've connected to WPA-TKIP, WPA2-TKIP, and unsecured Wifis day after day. I've flashed the 11.20, 11.22, 11.25, 11.27 ROMs for CM6 and I've been fine on all these wifi networks.
Are you guys sure it's not residual crap clogging up your phones or perhaps something on the router side?

I've tried all those as well, and they didn't work for me on any router. It may have been caused by /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf being corrupted on something similar. I'm on cronos 1.6.1 now, which also never worked, but since I flashed the SBF again, it's been working fine.
Every rom which I try on with 2.1 sbf has WORKING wifi for me.. But here I just can't get it working.. I think I'll just wait for official 2.2 and hope it will be good there..
Ok, so this morning I ran into the same issue again with cronos 1.6.1. Deleting /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf fixed the issue for me. Removing and re-adding the network didn't. Still have WifiAdHoc set to 1.

Wifi on Cyanogen issues

I just finally got sick of waiting for an official Froyo(Bell isn't about to give me an upgrade anyhow.) So I went to a froyo rom that was based on one of the stock roms. But I figured since I'm rooted anyhow why not play around, and grabbed cyanogen 6.1 and installed it. Then I end up with the issue of its not connecting to my wifi, I have no issues on the stock 2.2 roms. One thing I have noticed is the cyanogen shows the network as wep, but it's actually wpa encrypted. I flashed into it from the stock without clearing it first and it worked until I shut off and came back to it. Any ideas on what might be the issue. I'm fairly new but I did look and couldn't find anything to fix this.
I assume you flashed 6.1 stable version? I have no issue whatsoever on my device (and I also used official froyo previously). Did you wipe all before flashing 6.1?
He said he "flashed without cleaning"...so I presume no wipe. This could be the problem, a wipe is strongly adviced if going to CM from a non CM ROM. Also check the number of WiFi channels set by default in advanced settings of wifi. It is set for 11 and if the router is set to 13 or 14 it could not work
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
I had the same problem when i was installing CM6.1. (with wipe)
The phone could just se a wep version of my network and not the wpa that i have. But after i turned on and off the wifi a couple of times i suddenly saw the wpa version of my network and after i connected to that the problem was solved. I also did click "forget network" on the wep version.
Hope this will help you

Trying this now but no go. Sometimes will flash it as wpa and then jump back to wep. This is after a full wipe. What I was trying to say was once I flashed in without wiping and it worked for a bit but jumped right back to not working, after the phone going to sleep.
Bump.
Any insight into this issue? Still only reading my network as wep.
Try installing "WiFi Advanced Configration Editor" from the market. You should be able to change to WPA manually with it.
Did you try to reset your wifi router?sometimes the issues came up from wifi router, not the phone itself.
Mine is fine. I share my broadband wifi to my phone using connectify.
The only problem remains is wifi disconnect frequently, but I heard that it's due to a new kernel which I use (.32 kernel)
hope it helps
Ya reset the router a few times, and it still came up like that. I did install the wifi advance config software mentioned it seemed to fix it. I didn't actually set anything up on it and it seems to have fixed it. Thanks.
CM 6.1 messed up my wifi. Wiped everything, but it suddenly doesn't find my networks.
Wiped again and restored nandroid backup of working rom but STILL the same issue now!! Can I flash the wifi drivers again somehow?

MIUI WiFi problem in my Milestone

I have problem on my Milestone with MIUI WiFi.
Every other ROM works just fine (connects immediately thorough WiFi with the internet). Unfortunately every version of MIUI don't
I tried 1.14, 1.21 v2, 1.21v2, even 1.26 chinese. All those versions doesn't want to connect via WiFi.
I've done 3x wipe before and after instaling MIUI.
I've installed MIUI from several ROMS, official + vulnerable, 2.2.1. GOT, 2.1
and always with the same result. WiFi won't connect.
There's short thread about it on xda involving different mobile and using clockworkmod recovery + rom manager, but it's not confirmed and it used to not work on Milestone. Could cause damage, so i droped tryin in that way.
Anyone got any idea why WiFi doesn't want to work in MIUI on my Milestone?
Is there any app tool to discover the cause of lack WiFi connection? Maybe i can run it on my MIUI and show to some dev who will now what certain logs mean ?

Sad you never got an answer to this one - right now I have the very same problem. Happened after the last Miui update.
I have nothing but hope it will get better with the next one.
I have the same problem. On newest version of MIUI (1.5.13), and the 1.5.6 was the same. On 1.4.29 everything was fine. Now wifi is connecting, getting IP, and nothing happens (disconecting)
help pls, anyone can find the fix? where to post this problem ? I dont know chinese
Is your router N? If so, try to change it to work as G only. This is the only way I can make CM7 connect properly with my router, unfortunately, perhaps this helps you guys.
my router is Linksys WRT54GC, wpa (not wpa2) personal, tkip, b/g (not n)
so I dont know if "g only" will help, normally on every rom there is no problem, but from MIUI 1.5.6 problems started. Strange that this happens not to everybody, but to some of us only.
I can confirm that the bug is MIUI related cause I don't have it in CM7 on my HD2.
Sadly I couldn't find any solution yet.
In my case it was caused by luca/froyomod's dsi fix update.zip which I applied on miui, whole radio (wifi + data) wasnt working properly after that. Now I do it manually, or using dsi fix for miui made by eyebee in his thread, and great rom by the way. It feels much snappier, and better multitasking, lots better than pure Miui. Feeyo's, luca's, zeppelinrox's tweaks and other applied by eyebee do the great job on this rom. Great alternative for cm7. Of course kabaldan does also great job. Ok, EOT

try this version 1.63 .. shud solve ne wifi issues .. i got none using this version

I'm expecting exactly the same problem at the moment. Have You solved this issue? I think it is MIUI connected becouse I am on SGS with the same issue.
Same for me on 1.7.29 version.
This version of MIUI caused me alot of trubble.
First i bricked the phone (like an noobie formated system and bootloader) okay some how i got it fixed. Then I installed 1 version older 1.9.30 which caused my phone keept restarting due wifi power on (after restoration with included app) now my phone keeps restarting again (after update) and im really not in mood atm for any thing =/ cant get my apps backedup since phone keeps restarting.
is there any way to disable wifi without booting into android?

[Q] Wifi no longer working after setting up VPN

I'm on CM dal .32 test build 3.1
Today I tried setting up a VPN but failed. The screen became frozen and I decided to reboot my Nook Color. However, after rebooting my wifi is no longer working. It says "connecting" but then "disconnected" Scan option didn't show any network.
Anyone can help me?
CM7.0.3 with Nook Color no longer works
Hi,
I've run into the same issue with my nook color. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the kernel or the physical device. I know that this is not a router issue since I'm able to connect other machines to my router. Also, I no longer see any other hotspots with the Nook.
I tried some suggestions that I've found on other websites, which include
Shutdown Tablet and start again
Re-install Google Apps
Use Fix Permissions in Rom Manager
None of these work. Any suggestions or is this a known bug?

Same here, I was using nightly 115 with Dalingrin's 6/18 OC kernel when the problem started. I've since rebooted multiple times, fixed permission both from CWM and in Rom Manager, flashed nightly 117 without flashing OC kernel, and still haven't solved the problem.
Wifi just stays "Connecting" and then changed to "Disconnected" briefly and go back to "Connecting" again.
Just reflash your ROM or the latest ROM and DON'T mess with any OC kernels.
Does it work? If so, try the OC kernel again. If it fails, let Dal know in his OC kernel thread, and just re-flash your ROM again to return to the stock kernel. Wipe cache/dalvik as necessary, but don't wipe data and you're not going to lose anything.
One suggestion I have is if you're using AES on your router, try changing from WPA2 to WPA or changing WPA AES (or AES+TKIP) to just WPA TKIP and see if that fixes the problem.
There's a long standing issue with some routers regarding AES in Android, and apparently some laptops also had this issue on older kernels.
Flashing to the latest rom without messing with the kernel was the first thing I tried (other than turning wifi on and off multiple times). It didn't work.
What eventually worked was when I wiped data and factory reset it. Some how that fixed the wifi.
The strange thing is I had just recently factory re-setted coming from an old (pre 2.6.32) nightly a couple of days ago, and had not gotten around to installing much, and I did not restore from backup. i.e. the only thing installed when the wifi problem suddenly appeared were the google apps, Aldiko, QuickPic, Rom Manager, MoboPlayer, and a few ADW themes. None of which sound like they should do anything that messes up the wifi.
I doubt it has anything to do with the router, because I tried connecting it to my router (tkip), hotspot from my android phone (unlocked) and hotspot from my iphone (unlocked). My phone just did not see any network around at all, not even the 5-6 different network from other people in the building.
As mentioned, I have factory wiped my NC and all is fine again now, so I'm not too concerned right now, just curious what could have caused the problem.

[Q] Wifi - Obtaining IP

I am several hours around my phone and still wasn't able to figure out what's wrong with the wifi.
So, for the start, i was using ICS 4.0.3 for about 2 months or something, everything was fine. Today i decided to install a custom JW5 to give it a try, since it has some "secundary" features that i would like to use. The problem came after this. At first, i installed everything just fine, on first boot i can connect my wifi to my router, but as i start to use the internet (browser or google play) it just disconnects after 5 seconds or so. After that, the wifi stay on a loop scan-obtain ip-disconnect. If i just switch off and on, it won't pass the obtain ip. For it connects, i must reboot the phone.
I thought it was a rom problem, so, i started trying another roms: jw5, jw4, jw1, all custom and all stock, none worked. I tried to use several modems, like jw4, jvq, jvu and so the same with kernels: semaphore kernel, stock kernel, everything. Nothing worked.
Although, i tried the old JVQ rom and wifi worked just fine. I didn't tried ICS again because i don't want to go back to it and neither i want to use an old rom like JVQ, so, is there any way to fix this?
Rebooting the modem and router didn't work aswell and i have 2 other computers using it just fine (just like the galaxy worked until today). If someone could help me, i appreciate, i'm really tired wasting time with this.
EDIT: i forgot to mention, i tried with static ip, didn't work either.
EDIT2: i already tried delete the file from /data/misc/dhcp too.
