Unable to restore Via adb-"cannot verify backup data" - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my phone went through the washer last night and its finally up and sorta running again. It went into safe mode, so I reflashed my current ROM and now It seems I'm unable to perform a restore through recovery. So I instead i go through the adb steps and get all the way to selecting the recovery image and I get an error. Is there anything I can do from here? Or am I just SOL??
I'm too newb (< 8 posts) to be able to attach the link, so here it is...
i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad104/tuffguy1979/adbshell.jpg
also, whenever I try a different backup, I'm simply told "permission denied"

Sounds to me like u no longer have root..but then u wouldn't be able to flash the rom. Could be internally jacked up.

Error Rooting CDMA Hero 2.1

I am very new to this - my first time rooting a phone. I followed the guide and everything seemed to work perfectly until I got to the step to make a Nandroid backup. I get an error: "Error : Run nandroid-mobile.sh via adb!"
I then tried re-booting without making a backup but my phone just hangs at the white HTC screen. I tried cleaning off my 2GB sd card via USB-MS toggle and deleted everything except for the files put there at the beginning of the process. But had the same error when I attempted a Nandriod backup.
Next, I tried running the backup via adb but got an error that the Device or Resource is Busy.
I really need a working phone fairly quickly and am ok without having an original backup if that is what I have to do.
Could someone please give me a hand?

1.81 GB currently. I have even tried flashing a couple of ROMS but when they finish, I choose Reboot and it still sits on the White and Green HTC screen.
Have I bricked it?

Highly doubtful.
1. Reflash your recovery image
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoveryfilename.img
2. Try a Nandroid (if it fails oh well, too late now)
3. Wipe everything under the Wipe menu when you get into it.
4. Reflash your rom
5. Reboot - It really could take up to 20 minutes some times.
if it still wont reboot:
6. Power off
7. Take the SD card out.
8. Reboot.
If it still doesn't boot post back.

-Ok, tried reflashing recovery but it said header is same, not flashing recovery.
-is the rom I need to reflash the boot-patched.zip file?
Thanks for all of your help. I don't know what happened on this one but it got hosed somewhere in the process!
Hoping I can get it running again soon as it is my only phone and I have 2 kids at home.
UPDATE
Ok-
Loaded the 1.6.2 Recovery. It allowed me to run a NAND Backup.
However, after loading the ROM I still end up locked on the White background with the Green HTC letters on it?
Any other ideas? I have not seen anything like this googling and reading forums.
Try taking the battery out for a minute. I would just reroot from scratch and follow the directions step by step.

How would I reroot from scratch? I can only get into recovery mode. Is there a way to do it that way?
Try this thread.

Me personally, I would unroot, then root all over again.

This phone had 2.1. That is a guide for older versions. Plus, I can't get into the OS to make the changes to debugging and such. I only have access to Android System Recovery.
I should also mention that the command adb devices returns a
000000000000 Recovery
Is this normal? It is in recovery mode so, I am not sure.
I am starting to think it is a brick.

Alarming ClockworkMod Problem

I wanted to download the new update for our phone, so last night, I backed up with Titanium Backup and ROM Manager. Then, I used SL4A to undo the ext4 lagfix, as I was told that I had to do. Now, my phone won't boot. It gets to the S screen, pulses for while, and goes dark.
This is what I backed up for, right? But I can't seem to boot into ClockworkMod recovery. Pressing power+volume keys just gets me into the normal Android recovery screen. And since I don't want to reinstall packages, try another reboot in vain, or delete all user data, I'm kind of at a loss.
Can anyone help me?
If i've understood correctly, Clockwork doesn't play well with ext4, so that may be what you're running into. Shouldn't be too big of a deal, just use ODIN3 to reflash JF6 (DON'T MASTER CLEAR- just flash JF6). You should be able to do this by 1. Starting ODIN3, 2. Get your phone to the stock recovery screen and then hooking up your USB cable, 3. Start up an ADB Command Line and type in 'adb shell' (enter) and then 'reboot download' (enter). Your phone should reboot into download mode (big yellow triangle) and be picked up by ODIN3. Click 'start' on ODIN3 and wait for it to reflash JF6. When it's done, try downloading the update again. If it doesn't take (don't be surprised) just download it from the development forum and flash it using Clockwork. (You'll have to re-root, re-download and install Clockwork). Once you have JH7, re-root, re-download and install Clockwork and Titanium again, and then use the batch method to put your apps and settings back on. Let me know if you run into anything and I'll see if I can help.
-ok, just double checked, and you'll run into permission issues if you try to type 'adb shell' and then 'reboot download'. Instead, just type in 'adb reboot download' at the C:\...\tools> prompt. It gave an 'error: protocol fault <no status>' message in the command window, but the phone went into download mode 3 out of 3 tries.
had a similar issue last night. went from cog 2.1 back to JH7 and didnt fix the voodoo issue which left me in the same position. you just have to reflash to JF6 with Odin and you'll be set.
1. make sure you have the usb drivers installed
2. open odin
3. turn phone off (pull battery if needed, and replace)
4. hold both volume keys while inserting usb cable to phone (will put phone into download mode, huge yellow triangle on screen)
5. odin should now recognize the phone/com port.
6. hit 'Start', not Master Wipe or w/e the other button is.
after all said and done you'll have flashed JF6. Now re-root phone, download rom manager and restore one of your backups and you're back in business. good luck.
I just found myself in this same position, but I removed the EXT2 lagfix via SL4A and ended up with a phone that had to be reflashed - it went dead, wouldn't get past the glowing S, then black screen. Reflashed, I then recovered later via Titanium backups.
Then get this... once I flashed with Odin, I got hit with an OTA update... which I cancelled. Then I was dealing with an almost bricked phone. So I had to finagle my way into getting to where Odin would reflash the phone (I was lucky) and then I went straight to Cognition 2.1 to avoid the OTA, and I've been setting up everything else since. I've recovered my apps, et al... and tweaked it like I once had it.
There should be a way to avoid this in the future - I hate setting everything back up - but I got hit with a SL4A issue too.
Thanks a lot, guys. I'm going to use Odin3 as soon as I get home from work! Then, should I just try SL4A again to un-lagfix, or what? It's my understanding that the update doesn't play well with ext4.
Nope, once you've reflashed JF6 with ODIN3, you should be back to stock with no SL4A if i'm not mistaken. If your goal was to just have JH7, i'd make sure to delete any folders SL4A might have put on your INTERNAL SD card storage (don't know if it does, never used it), and don't do a nandroid restore- that will put you back to where you were right before the problems started. Your apps and settings should be ok, just get to JH7, reload your apps and settings, THEN do a nandroid backup before you try anything else so that you basically have a fresh JH7 install with all your apps and settings as a starting point for future tinkering.
-Ok, just read a post from Rajendra82 in the Development forums discussing this type of thing. It's the "Noob needs your help to understand" thread, and on page 2 he discusses this same situation in pretty good detail. I'm pretty sure I read that SL4A gives you two choices to lagfix- ext2 and ext4. If you chose ext2 you'll probably be ok, but if you chose ext4 you may infact still have issues with trying to use ODIN3. Go read that thread for more info, maybe even PM Rajendra82 since he seems to have a pretty good understanding about this. Good Luck.
Thank you, samoled! It's all fixed. Good lord, what a pain in the backside.
I (eventually) managed to flash a fresh JF6 install with Odin3. Tried the update the regular way; it failed. So I rooted, then used ClockworkMod to load the update from my SD card. Rooted again, got Busybox, enabled app sideloading, got Titanium backup, and finally ran the batch and restored everything. Phew.
I hear voodoo's a much less buggy way to do the lagfix (I used the Tayatumi update.zip last time). I think I'll use that - after backing up, of course!
No problem at all man, just glad I could help. Happy Modding!!!

Question about backup and unrooting

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761819
So, I used this guide to root and everything went fine no problem. I didn't see the clockwork recovery step and went straight to removing bloatware. Now when I try to backup current rom and goes to blue menu and I have to click reboot. I am a complete beginner and could it be messing up because I did not backup right away? SO, I would like to unroot and try again. I tried searching the forum to unroot and read many things from one click unroot to odin3. I am unsure of which method and if someone can tell me how to get it back to how it was. I just did a factory reset before rooting so I just want it back to that. Pictures, contacts, music is fine to stay as I did a manual backup via mass storage but how can I get the phone back to that state. Thanks and sorry for the long message.
ALSO, WHEN I FACTORY RESET earlier this day it already had quickoffice so, I know the phone did not reset to its original state, but the updated one that is fine. I just want it unrooted and back to how it would be with that factory reset and I will try to root and back up again later. Or if this is not an issue why is it going to the bluescreen after pressing backup current rom in clockwork
When in blue screen click reinstall packages, you will be brought back to the same screen, click reinstall packages again. Enjoy
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
so should I go to the bluescreen by holding volume + power or through the backup rom step?
thanks again
Did you hit the to option in rom manager to flash clockwork? If so open up rom manager, click backup, it will reboot to blue screen, reinstall packages twice, it will backup
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
ok so I just clicked backup current rom and it brought me to the blue screen. Instead of pressing reboot system now I should choose reinstall packages
OK I just clicked reinstall packages twice and it brought be to a black screen with green clockwork recovery text. After click reboot now.
DOES this mean that I have backed up the rom? is it stock? and if I had to use it would it have no att bloatware on it. I am a little confused. After seeing this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8507559&postcount=1
I figure I should try it this way. Will I still be able to get to the unrooted factory reset state? Even if it is fine now could you explain how I would do that?
When it went to the green clockwork screen did it run a backup for like 3 minutes? If not you are not backed up yet
Your backup its of your current state, no bloatware rooted, are you looking to find a way to get back to a out of box state?
Do you have a pc our a mac.

I have a PC. Earlier today I did a factory reset, all apps gone but photos, videos, etc still there. I restored my contacts from a different sim card. So, I figure while it is clean I should root. Now I would like to unroot and try again. I am trying to get it back to the state it was earlier not quite a out of box state but a factory reset state if possible, so all att apps, no messages, contacts, etc.

Help Getting Back To Stock - Guides aren't working for me.

I need some help please. I seem to be in a pickle, though I’m not bricked. (At least, not yet.) So I rooted my phone last night, using [GUIDE][NOOB]Step-By-Step Instructions for New Stock Bionic Owners. Everything went great, and I got root. I followed the guide to get the .901 update, which went fine. Tried the ROM suggested, and liked it. Thought I would try Eclipse v2.1. I installed it, but I like Visual Voicemail, so I decided to use my Nandroid that I did right after root and revert back. Here is where problems started.
After the restore, it wouldn’t boot. Passed the Moto Dual Core logo and hung up. Allowed 10 minutes and after nothing, I flashed back to the backup I made after installing Eclipse. It booted fine. So I decided to go back to stock rom, debloat it how I like it and just run the debloated stock. Here is where problems started. I can’t find a flashable copy of the stock. Just a couple of guides on using RSD Lite. This is for Bricked Bionic’s, but I decided to try it, since one of the guides said it works to get back to OTA.
Downloaded the RSD Lite and the full system file to flash. I put my phone into the mode to flash (Power + Volume Down), unpacked the file with RSD Lite and tried to flash. Got an error.
Failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. 1/15 flash cdt.bin"cdt.bin"-> Phone returned FAIL.; phone connected.
Now, when I reboot my phone, it goes back to the Fasboot Flash Mode screen saing (Failed). I can boot into recover (Volume Up + Volume Down + Power) and do a Normal Boot, and it boots fine.
I tried a Factory Reset, and it just reset’s on Eclipse v2.1.
I want to simply get back to stock. Rooted or unrooted, I don’t care. I’ll reroot if I need to.
I also tried to download the STOCK Deodexed files. The links are dead. Figured if I went back to one of those stock images, I could unroot and see if everything was ok.
Suggestions?
Hmm..I think your mistake was in safeboot when you tried to go back to original back up you were suppose to toggle safe system so that it would be disabled. From there you would've been able to restore your original system and boot up just fine. It was mentioned in the guide through some posts.

So I need to turn Safe Mode off in SafeStrap and flash? I had thought about that, but I was worried about totally bricking the phone. I'm pulling SafeBoot now, and will try the flash.
EDIT...
SafeMode is off, and rebooted. I'm back to .875 Stock Rooted. So far, so good.
I can either flash from here (haven't tried yet) or stay here. When I boot, I'm still booting into Fastbook with (Flash Failure). Any way to get that off, other than flashing back to stock and locked through RSD Lite?
Your mistake was trying to restore from the un safe system. You can toggle safe system and you'll be ok. Or, reinstall a ROM to your safe system.
To clarify: don't flash a ROM with safe system disabled. toggle back to safe mode, and then pickup my directions from the format /system step. You can try another ROM no problem then.
I bet you can find the visual voicemail APK and add it whichever ROM. Copy paste into system/app directory.
Thanks. I'm used to flashing with the Thunderbolt and the XOOM. Not used to safestrap, just normal CWM.
Any idea how to stop the phone from booting into Fastboot? Having to do it the long way still. I'd be happy staying this way, if I can get that resolved.
Actually the problem was you tried to restore to a backup of a pre .901 system which has different radios which flashing doesn't like.
As for the flash failure, get the fxz files and put them in a folder with adb and fastboot. Then run this command in a prompt:
fastboot flash device_tree.bin
When you get a flash failure you just need to flash something to fix it; flashing device_tree.bin won't affect anything.
Its one solid file with a weird extension. Is there a way to unpack it? I am out right now and don't know the extension by heart.
Its a zip, just extract it

Now, I'm scratching my head. (Again) I've worked with ADB with my Xoom, so I'm not a noob at that part. ADB doesn't see my phone. My computer does, and the phone know's it's plugged in. However when I try to flash the file, it can't find the device. I checked "adb devices" and it's not on the list.
So I decided to go ahead and flash completely back to stock with RSD Lite. Still get's the same error message. (I did check the MD5 SUM on the file. It's correct.) Safe Mode is off in Safestrap. Here is what the Fastboot screen looks like on my phone.
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)
0A.61
Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB Connected
Since I've not seen the Fastboot screen on this phone until this started, I don't know if the (S) has meaning. Like, it thinks the phone's still in SafeMode?
I noticed one of the options in safestrap is to disable safestrap. Thought about trying that, but.... Unsure.

Unable to Restore Bionic Back to Factory Settings

My son rooted my bionic, installed Safestrap and Eclipse launcher. The phone was working great. I changed phones and wanted to give the Bionic to a friend but wanted to wipe it clean before doing so. I decided to do a factory reset from the system settings. (I've done this before with no problem but that was before the phone was rooted.) Now when I start up the phone, all I get is the screen that says SAFESTRAP: DISABLED. Starting in 10 seconds. Then I get the red circle with the white M but nothing happens. It just cycles between the red circle and the safestrap disabled screen. I've messed around with the menu on the safestrap disabled screen but can't figure out how to get the phone started again. I don't know what version of anything I had because I can't access settings. I've spent hours searching the forums and have tried various unbrick methods with RSD Lite but nothing has worked. I honestly don't know what I'm doing and am unfamiliar with some of the lingo. Can anyone point me in the right direction and give me step by step instructions on how to restore the phone back to factory settings. Thanks in advance!
It sounds like your son installed eclipse which is a custom ROM on slot 1. The safestrap menu once opened under boot options has a button that says stock ROM. Hit that and then hit activate and then boot. You will then be back on your stock ROM. It sounds like you erased the custom one when you factory reset which is why it won't boot in slot 1, its BC there's nothing there. Once you get back on your stock ROM just uninstall the superuser app, and as far as most people would know it would be just as before. No need to rsd lite back to completely original unless you are giving it back to the carrier. If you still want to do that I would need to know specifics about what android version you are on etc to further assist you. However I recommend just switching to stock and uninstalling superuser and safe strap.

Thanks for the quick reply.
When I go into Stock ROM from the Boot Options menu, it tells me it's Currently Active. If that's the case, how do I reboot the phone so I can get to the point where I can uninstall superuser and safe strap? Thanks.
If its already active and you have already tried rebooting then we may have a more serious problem. If you haven't hit reboot system then try that. If that doesn't work and year you've already done a factory data reset then I would say hit the restore button and see if your son made a backup. If there isn't one there then I would say you will have no choice but to learn to use RSd lite.
Sent from my XT875 using xda premium
That's because it flashed the stock boot image, the rooted settings stayed. You need to flash a diffrent boot image unroot then do factory reset. First time you did it you didn't do factory reset! Next time just reformat your sd card and you'll be fine! Good luck !

I tried rebooting the system through Safestrap menu. It rebooted back to the SAFESTRAP: DISABLED screen.
I found the backup file, hit restore and it said restore was successful. However, I'm still stuck at the SAFESTRAP: DISABLED screen. I did more research on the internet and this is what I did with RSd lite based on a youtube video I found on how to restore the bionic:
I downloaded the motorola drivers, file name: Motorola_End_User_Driver_Installation_5.9.0_32bit.msi
I downloaded RSd lite 5.7 (also tried RSd lite 6.4.1)
I downloaded cdma_targa_9.8.2O-72_VZW-22_cfc.xml.zip
I tried installing the motorola drivers but got the error message that the drivers couldn't load successfully because a newer version was installed. (I searched the internet for a later version of the motorola drivers to see what version I might have but couldn't find a version newer than 5.9.0).
So I moved to RSd light. I located the cdma_targa zip file, hit decompress only. Once done I hit Start and there are 24 steps. I get a fail at step 5 with the message: Failed flashing process. 5/24 oem fb_mode_set -> Phone returned FAIL. I tried with RSd lite 5.7 as well as 6.4.1 and it always failed at step 5. Not sure what to try next or why this is so difficult. The YouTube video seemed so straghtforward. Thanks.
Okay, just breathe. This is not unfixable but it is probably going to require more than a little patience and some research. There is a wealth of knowledge in the forums here at xda and the answer is almost certainly there there to find. Once you open the forums use the search all forums tab to search key words like you error message. I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2242075
Like the member who chimed in on our convo said the answer seems to be with the boot image. However I've never had this specific problem before. So I'll look a bit later and check back in. Maybe another member will weigh in and maybe you'll find a piece of gold in the forum!

You need to edit the .xml file and remove all of the getvar lines and then it will flash properly in RSD Lite.
You can also use fastboot to flash the partitions separately but given your level of understanding, I would recommend using RSD Lite with the edited .xml and avoiding the need for command line and multiple operations.
The full xml.zip will restore your device completely and you can start fresh and re root and try SafeStrap again.
