So today I was at work and a little notification popped up about a software update. I just left it alone and went on with work. I come back from lunch and it updated itself and disabled all my apps and root. The SD nethod with Nooter does NOT work. The software version showed 1.0.1. I ended up returning the Nook as its pretty useless with no root & 3rd party apps for me. I will be waiting and seeing where this all pans out as more people get the OTA. Good luck!

I haven't gotten any notification of an update and I've been using the wifi all day. Don't see anything about an update on the Barnes and Noble site or community forums.
Not saying it doesn't exist. But if so, it's quite odd for them not to officially announce it the way they do for the original Nook firmware updates.
Keeping my WiFi off for the time being though.
This is definitely not good news. Can someone else confirm this firmware update ? B&N is not showing any updates on their website and the community forum over there is not indicating anything either. Haven't heard anything over on MobileRead.com forums either. I'd imagine that someone else would've gotten this update by now (either rooted or not) and reported it.
I'm wondering if mine just happened to get caught in a glitch in their system. Like how some Android phones got updated randomly before others. Your guess is a good as mine. I guess we will see if anyone else got hit too.
Any idea of where it saved it to? If this comes down the pipe, I'd like to pull it apart for a look at what they did

Do we know what domain the updates are coming from?
There are some instructions for blocking updates here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860480
But as the author says, they may not work (read the thread).
The best option is to flash a new rom probably and it looks like good progress is being made there.
houseofbugs: Did you get a notification before reboot? My guess would be that these updates are installed from recovery, so there may be an interim solution to delete the file from internal memory if you get a notice.
Far from perfect, but better than nothing.
So nobody else has received this update ? I Googled for any info, checked out the BN forums and another forum dedicated to the NC and nobody else has reported any kind of software update.
Just as a precaution I called my gf and had her turn off my nook and turn off wifi on hers, not looking forward to going home and finding root has been broken. Don't like the fact that it force updates itself without user interaction too, from what I gathered from the op's post. OTACerts.zip doesn't do anything on the nook?

If the Op didn't mess with the OTACerts.zip, then we wouldn't know. Op, did you disable updates as suggested in the thread above?
I haven't seen any "update" messages on mine. I double-checked and my NC is still running version 1.0.0. My wifi has been on for the past couple days (including all night last night) and I've seen nothing suggesting a firmware update.
Maybe I'm lucky. Looks like B&N may be planning to force a firmware update soon. It'd be nice if they gave us the option to decline it (they'll probably strip in-Store features without the most current version, but I've read here that rooting does away with in-Store features anyway).
There's another thread over in NC Android Dev where someone got a firmware update scare. Looks like a false-positive, but it's something to keep us on our toes.
Hmm no updates here either..
nothing...
I remember reading that someone else got an Update Available notification in the huge thread that started this forum. I think they said they did a system restore to factory and it allowed them to re-root it, but I don't recall if it had a version number in it. Same thing happened, nobody knew what was going on.
Regardless, we should eliminate the ability for B&N to apply automatic updates at will.
After un-rooting and resetting back to factory fresh settings, the Nook DID download an update, version 1.0.0.0. The notice appeared in the notification area.
The good news is that I am still able to root using the nooter method.

That's not an update, it's an improper notification. It hasn't been *updated* to anything, since that's what it came with stock. It's just the nook's way of saying it's been reset to defaults.
Hopefully the update is not rolling out...
...but if it is I hope it hits my NC after this weekend when I have to take my son from the USA to the UK! Two flights and two airports without Angry Birds to keep him happy would be unpleasant.
Hmmm...
OTAcerts.zip would be my usual suggestion, for this kind of thing.
If anyone gets the nook with the update, try and grab the URL of the update via logcat.
Failing that, someone with the update might need to try things to get it rooted RageAgainstTheCage, anyone?
I don't know what you specifically need for the nook to let you sideload etc, but RageAgainstTheCage would make sense to work and get at least shell root.

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I had my nook rooted, market, youtube and gingerbread keyboard installed and working. different boot screen flashed. i plugged it in to my pc here at work to charge. when i unplugged it, it was at the startup screen with the android. The old boot screen is back. All apps are removed. it appears to still be rooted, but I cant bring up keyboard at all. All my apps and everything I installed are gone. I don't understand what happened to it. Any one have any idea? Thanks!
A wizard did it.
Seriously others have reported similar anomalies The thing to do is wipe and start over. I suggest you get titanium back up so you don't have to completely start over next time.
I figured thats what I would have to do. I don't think i would have needed to, had I not installed the gingerboard keyboard. I was just wondering if anyoen else experienced, perhaps we could pinpoint the problem and figure out what to do to avoid it. Worse part is some one wanted to see it after I told them not to waste thier money on an ipad, they come over and it doesnt work at all. Well it worked, but just as an e-reader, bleh who bought it for that, lol.

Dropbox works very well indeed. Awesome Drop is also very good. While it offers no online storage, it doesn't require an account either. However, neither wanted to work without an External SD card. Haven't looked into they wouldn't use the internal storage. Anyone know?
Possibly it updated to 1.01? Mine was act a little strange, then all of a sudden it updated to 1.01 (even with the script in place to disable over the air updates).
I also had some sporadic reboots. Just re-rooted after the 1.01 update and it seems more stable. I also installed an uptime widget to monitor and it's been up now for 11h 30m..
In a couple more weeks it won't matter as the 2.3 build continues to progress..

Im on 1.0.0 still because the read to me doesn't work with the 1.0.1 update.

It was already updated. I am not sure what happened, but Its up and running again. This thing is awesome, even with the barnes and noble rom, and restrictions. It plays every game I throw at it, just as good as my Incredible. Most apps fit the screen well and its only going to get better. best 250 I ever spent. I literally carry this thing everywhere I go!

Another data point: got my Nook Color December 25. It was version 1.0.0. Updated to 1.0.1 and rooted with auto-nooter-2.12.25 on December 26. All went well (including using the Shop, though I didn't buy anything) until last night. Entered the shop and got the infamous "authentication problem" message, after which my nook reset itself. When it was finished, the green 'n' icon in the lower left was on (which is odd, since it appears to have updated from 1.0.1 to 1.0.1).
When the dust had settled, the device was still rooted (I still have Market, still have NookColor Tools, still have SuperUser), but everything I'd put on since rooting was gone, and all my settings (wifi key, barnes and noble account, gmail account) were gone.
I'm reasonably familiar with linux (though only a little bit specifically with android), so I'll be happy to poke around to see if I can find anything....
Possible reason?

No, that would be 1.0.1. Android Police tend to be late on the uptick on real news, and make up the rest...
Picked up my NC 1.0.1 today. Rooted without issue. After having a Google Talk conversation, I lost access to Marketplace, and all Google Apps? Can't log back in?
Anyone else having similar issues?
P.S. My wallpaper was changed as well ?!?!?!?!?!
p.p.s. My browsing history and favorites are gone too? Please tell me an update or something was just pushed out. I feel like I just wasted a few hours of my life here.
My rooted 1.0.1 nook has problems as well. Gets authorization error and resets data. After restoring through the clockwork recovery, had it up just for 5 minutes before it automatically reset again. Lost all my apps, market access, youtube, etc. Don't know if this issue has been discussed before. May just have to go back to stock.
It appears that something is amiss. I cannot sign back into any Google Services.
Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues call Customer Care.

Would a simple re-rooting solve the issue?
Same here. Was using everything fine Saturday. Turned on the device and in a few minutes I got an error, something about a problem with the registration and it said it was rebooting. It did and wiped everything of my rooted install except the market. Can't login to google account now.

I might add that I got my device it was at 1.0.0 and I rooted then reflashed to stock to upgrade to 1.0.1 and rerooted. Then I noticed after today's unexpected reboot/data wipe (the status screen during the reboot says it was wiping data) it again gave a message that it had just upgraded to 1.0.1 so I initially thought this was an issue with the device thinking the firmware upgrade was not quite done...
Mine quit working as well. Mine is a 1.0.0 that was auto-nootered. Everything was fine and I used it daily. Now it is a brick, nothing I do seems to make it boot. Every once in a while I can get the backlight to come on but nothing else and it just goes off again in a few seconds.
Rather than troubleshoot, I busted an 8 times reboot to go back to stock then re-rooted. Seemed like less headache, panic and stress.
If your NC dosen't boot at all. Try doing a dd of snowfox's boot.img in dev section. See thread for more info. You'll need to boot into NF from SD.

I have tried rerooting, and restoring through clockwork...it seems to always revert and bootloop. Although the reroot lasted a week and clockwork restore hasn't lasted 24hrs twice now.
Not sure what to do but My wife is ready to kill me! I'll have to go stock till someone finds a way to bust up this authorization or just wait I read some ROMs are being developed.
Have any of you disabled the otacerts.zip?
If you haven't it may be the problem.
I have and same on my wife's and neither of us have had any issue, and we use them daily.
I hadn't realized I should be doing this. I will try it. I am actually thinking that my first store purchase came w/ an update (my issue seemed to start right after a magazine trial purchase was made).
Thanks.

Thank you, I will try that. All the searching I did was for disable OTA NC and such but actually searching for OTACerts brought out many many threads that were archived on this subject... I can't wait to get home to try it!
I did not rename the ota file.... will give it a go.
I have done some research here and on Google on a really odd problem...
My wife has a NC I updated to 1.0.1 then rooted. About a week later on her way to work it restarted and unupdated (?) back to 1.0.0... So I thought it was a fluke, root was gone but most things still worked, not Youtube or market but other apps I installed while / did.
Now twice, 2 days in a row I have checked out the device, I installed Clockwork, did a backup and the next morning on the way to work (She works in manhattan, takes the train in) it is bootlooped "touch the future of reading" so last nite I ran the clockwork restore and it was fine then again this morning... same thing stuck in a boot loop.
As happy as I am about her being able to restore it on her own...it takes a while and shes at work by the time its done! and the maddening part is that I booted it multiple times the nite before in both cases...
What could be causing this? Things I haven't tried yet?
I checked the SD to make sure there weren't any update.zips or similar,
I have not formatted the SD, that I will do tonight.
I read the whole thread regarding Clockwork I didn't see anything I might have messed up...Does this have to do with uSD boot priority and maybe I have a hidden file on the SD?
And I have really searched for something similar, people have bootloops but not like mine that I can see.
Sorry for being long here but this is frustrating, I'm not all that new at this I've been voiding my warranties for a long time and this one has me stumped...
Thanks in advance for any reasons, suggestions.
EDIT: Looks like I am not alone, I am seeing more of these problems pop up now.
Did you disable OTA updates?
I'm on 1.0.0 and haven't had issues at all. Seems that folks having this issue are all on 1.0.1 (or at least from what I've noticed). So, perhaps, to go 1.0.0 and root?

I have NOT gone the 1.0.0 then root path and that sounds like a good next step, thank you.

afraid it'll mess my rooted book up
I have the 1.0.1 update already and rooted it with nooter
Did you already have the 1.0.1 update installed?
Nothing new about an update on B&N forums or their nook color update page.
This is 1.5. Just getting ready to insert card into nook to root. Maybe I should wait.
I just got an update notice also. I already have 1.01 so not sure what the update was for. I said not now so I should get the notice again later. Hopefully it wasn't a fluke and its actually 2.2!!!!

I don't recall accepting an update, but something messed up my nook while I wasn't using it, and it fits the timeline of this update. I had to enter recovery and things seem to be working alright. I would advise that people make a recent backup just in case something similar happens to them. Definitely upset that I lost most of my recent changes.
Hey something defenently trying to get through I am getting a meesage of something is wrong in your nook and system restarts and wides data and cache...
No updates though.
I have reverted to stock 1.0.1 using the 8 failed boot sequence and waiting to see what comes through ...
I left a stock 1.01 NookColor on over night and I didn't see a new firmware push. But then I never got the 1.01 firmware either, I had to manually download and install it I didn't see anything on B&N's update site either. I'm curious to see what it is.

The only Nook with a v. 1.5 is Nook Klassic. As far as NC is concerned, I have also received several "update" notices for NC - the green "N" at the bottom left - even though I've already updated manually to 1.0.1 so I could AutoNooter 2.12.25. Ignore these messages. You're already up to date.

I'm like gedster314, I left NC #2 on w/WiFi overnight w/charging and had WiFi on for 2-3d IIRC while using it and NEVER got an OTA update notice, so I also ended up manually upgrading it to 1.01.
I haven't noticed any update notices on mine, but I mostly have WiFi off to help extend batt runtime since the batt life isn't so hot... (or maybe I've just been spoiled by my gTab batt runtime w/WiFi running nearly constantly...)
I am wondering how stop an update on a Droid Bionic?
I understand you need to "move the update from /cache to your SD card" once downloaded.
However, I do not know where "/cache" is located, how it is accessed, or how the moving process is done.
I connected my phone to a PC via USB and could not find "/cache" stored on the phone. The only thing close was a cache folder within "com.google.android.apps.maps", which doesn't seem like what I'm supposed to be looking for. I've also tried looking in Menu>Settings>Storage but do not see any 'cache' info.
I've been searching the forums but have had no luck; plenty of references to a 'cache' from
people who clearly know what they are talking about, but I can not find any explanations or instructions.
Any help is appreciated. This is my first Android device btw! (though I've been reading this forum for a week or two now)
Wow, you're wanting to stop .905 while most people are chomping at the bit to get 6.7.xxx. You can't do it with your PC, you will need to do it from your phone with a file manager app.
I think you need to be rooted to see the cache'. you will also need a root file manager like "root explorer" to move the update to your SD Card.
ICS is much much better than the GB OS. I would reconsider the update, better things are coming around the corner.
If you choose to stay at .902, I would suggest doing some reading about the rooting process. Bad things can happen if you haven't done some research.
There are many here that will be glad to help you, but you will need to be a little knowledgeable to "help them, help you"

thanks; that's really what I needed, a point in the right direction. I confess it's a bit new to me. I just got this phone, programmed it using steps found here (great forum!), and activated it on pageplus, but this was the first time I just got 'stuck' on something.
I read that 3G worked much better with 902 than with 905. this is why I was thinking of sticking with 902, at least until a legit/finalized version of ICS gets released (which allegedly, is very soon...maybe). Since I don't know much about the OS yet I figured I could survive the wait without 'knowing what I'm missing' so to speak.
whoa, just googled and saw that a new leak is out. I picked an odd time to be a newb working on a Bionic.
Thanks again!
If you do take the plunge into a leak, you should probably stick to one where FXZ to 902 isn't blocked so you can return to stock if needed. Everything 235 and after is poison, so to speak, and you won't be able to go back, which (thanks Moto) makes it really difficult to go forward (thanks Moto). I'm on 232 and I'm happy as a clam. It's stable and doesn't have many issues. Now when the official update comes out, they should release an FXZ and we'll be safe again and can all take the dive into ICS.
so, I realized you could postpone the update by just not accepting it when the prompt comes up.
so, I use my Bionic for a while and am quite happy. Then today, I noticed I no longer had 3G service. I tried restarting it, removing the battery,
toggling some of the data changes, no luck. I figured since ICS is (allegedly) right around the corner, there was really no reason not to go ahead and update.
I ran the update. I now have no phone service, no texting, and no 3G/1x.
My question is: how far in the process do I need to go back to get things running again? Right now what I have is a blinking white triangle in the notifications bar. My phone is stock in every way.
Edit: in "about phone/status" I have no phone number (it's blank). no MIN, no network. My PRL version is 'unknown'. so, basically I think I need to just start over, using the info I used successfully before (adam3rd is my hero), beginning with flashing a pageplus PRL. but I shouldn't need to reactivate it on pageplus, or need a new sim card, right? I feel like whatever happened wouldn't have effected my status with PP or the sim card, but I can't find a clear answer....any help appreciated
The white triangle is your phone searching for a signal to activate itself. Take your sim card out and re-insert it. you may need to wipe the dirt off the gold metallic area

thanks for the response. I actually had 4 bars of signal strength along with the white triangle. I'd assumed this meant I could 'detect' the verizon/PP network but wouldn't be able to get out of 'roaming' status until it was activated for the network.
I actually contacted PP via chat to reactivate it. they did it, but the problem wasn't resolved so I tried a factory reset. boom, activation screen came up! now I have fone and text again.
my real problem now is getting data to work consistently. gonna wait until the legit ICS comes out before tackling that one again.

yes, I'm very excited. a little paranoid about updating since I'm on PagePlus and haven't seen anyone use Pageplus and .246 yet. but I may just try using the info on howardforums; I know it 'should' work, but that's just not the same as confirmation.
on a side note; I believe I may have discovered what my data problem was; I think I'd just disabled the 'connect with data over mobile network' option and forgotten I'd done so a month later. pretty funny. but it's been a good learning experience, heh
