So, what's the basic difference between the different "branches" of the firmwares?
I believe consensus was that the JM firmware is some sort of in-development or test version, any idea what the difference is between JJ & JK? I know there's been official updates for the JJ series pushed out via Kies, is the same true of JK?
Since there doesn't seem to be any obvious difference between them, is there a good reason to stick with one versus another for the sake of legitimacy?
Also - does anyone want me to throw together a super-root UPDATE.ZIP for the tab? (Shell root, busybox & superuser) or are people happy with z4 & super one-click?
JJ and JK means Oct 2010 and Nov 2010
nothing special
samfirmware code has it
that means JK is newer since it released on November
tha latest should be JL
there shouldnt be any JM
thats why maybe people here call it some sort of test firmware
the area region is the 2 digit before JJ/JK
like DX for SE Asia, or XX/XW for europe
as the last number is the version, which generally means bigger is newer
official always out later then the unofficial ones, so in my logic, the JJ update via Kies is the most stable that samsung tested
it doesnt mean the JK ones is not stable, maybe they havent got the time to test it yet
JM are typically test firmwares.
I got a JK5 through Kies last week up from European XXJI.

Yep, that's the official update indeed. See links below to learn how to use the CheckFUS app (instead of Kies) to determine firmware availability:

According to the Kies registry entry, my product code is GT-P1000CWACPW.
The CWA part seems to be a complete orphan, most of the codes seem to be HK? of some form. Guess I should've left it on the stock JJ3 firmware.
I've grabbed one of the 550Mb CPW firmware files, decrypted it, unzipped it and flashed it as the PDA file in Odin (no PIT, no repartition).
It's flashed the kernel, cache partition, factoryfs partition (/data and /system etc. I assume), got to the "hidden" partition and hung. Still trying to work out what's going on. Looks like people are having no success with this partition (which by the sounds of it has the full version of NovaHD in it, so not hugely useful).
Once extracted the .tar was over 600MB, took a long time to flash it all! Probably not wisest to flash it in a virtual machine running on a hackintosh.
Edit: Just used Heimdall to flash the individual components using the standard P1.PIT, I left out the "hidden" partition, will just mount it as a loop device and manually copy the data into the main FS.
Edit2: Yup, the hidden.rfs file just has the full copy of NovaHD in it, the demo Movies (trailers) and a DioDict.apk.
can anybody use that nova apk? if the answer is yes, can you upload it? ^^
My understanding (and I'm a n00b so don't flame!) Is that CSC is the carrier customization portion of the firmware, and that CPW stands for Car Phone Warehouse...
According to FUS I'm on the latest stock UK firmware...

just got an OTA update for my tab today - anyone know what the changes are? i clicked past the "for more information visit" accidently before i read the site i was supposed to visit.
Firmware Version 2.2
Baseband Version S:I800.0.3V.DL21
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
I don't know what it does yet, but there doesn't seem to be much change
Found this on the website but doesn't sound like it is that great.
http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/galaxy_tab.pdf
Does anyone know if it messes up root or EXT file systems?
don't know about ext but I still have root.
Well, mine popped up, I clicked more info (which gave no real information) and then clicked restart and install. It did neither, restart or install. When I check for updates, says I am up to date and my baseband is not as listed above....not sure what happened here.
If someone can capture the upgrade file and post it, I would appreciated it.

"Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab (conveniently called the Samsung Galaxy Tab) is in the midst of getting a software update, it seems. The 34.6MB update to software version EC02 does the following:
Enhanced browser performance and speed.
Searching for Wifi hotspots doesn't hurt battery life.
Improvements to e-mail, including proper linking, time in the status bar shows when the email was received, download Word docs, send multiple name cards, open 5MB video attachments, fonts better sized."

Update file...maybe?
Not sure if this is it or not...found it in my cache folder. Seems to be the right size and was put there today at 10:56 am, but couldn't decipher the file to see what it was.
Hope this helps.
Added the file renamed update.zip

no need to extract this one, but you can to see the updated files
Looks like that was it...applied successfully and all matches as above.
Thanks
Looks like they added BT HID support.............Hip hip huray
When I click on the dropbox link I'm getting thousands of lines of code, not a .zip. Am I doing something wrong?
I had same problem doing it from Chrome, worked from IE 9 thought and downloaded
Damn, I'm on a mac and neither Chrome, Safari, or Firefox work.
I have the file, but no place to post it....any ideas?
I don't really use dropbox or anything. Oh well, I'm sure it'll show up sooner or later. I can get it at work tomorrow on a PC. I appreciate the help.
No problem.
Wish I could have been more help.

Sorry, i've been traveling all day and did not realize that it wouldn't dl easily. I zipped the file so it should be easier to dl. I pulled it from my cache folder. Try it there. I still have not installed it as I don't know what effect ext files have on it. If you have successfully updated with ext file system, please post and let us know your results.

I really appreciate the effort, but I keep getting an error 403.
New link posted....let me know if this one fails and I'll try rapidshare.
Got it downloaded. Thanks. I'm a little worried as I'm rooted, bootstrapped, and have Clockwork recovery. Also, the zipped file contains only an htm file. I may wait on this.
I have put the update.zip on rapidshare for anyone that wants it

Anyone having this update fail half way through the process? I was rooted, but restore the stock image through heimdall. I did a cache / data format before running the update and it fails everytime. Any suggestions?
How do I back up my firmware?
Firstly, I'm assuming baseband means firmware, aka what the "phone" entry says when I type *#1234# .
Base band is i9000xxjpp, is there a downloadable stock for it? Also, where can I/ did you find it?
Fanks

Even I would like to know this, as some users have done this, so there must be some app which takes the backup of fw in flashable format using odin.
most stock firmwares can be found at www.samfirmware.com
or you can have a look under general for firmwares too ! its a sticky on the first page.
if you want to back up your firmware you can either download it from the above, and make a backup with TB for all yours apps n data.
or you can flash a kernel, such as voodoo, speedmod, damianGTO ............. and make a nandroid backup from the recovery menu
Please no abbreviations, lol. What's tb and fw?don't leave me to interpret them as tuberculosis and fisting whales, or something.

I try, but i don't know what relates to my phone and what doesn't - many people just reference it and if i don't know what it is i won't usually search it as i don't think it pertains to me.
samfirmware.com - the closest to my i9000xxjpp are these - which should i choose?

well JPP is android 2.2
JPU and above is 2.2.1, so if you want something that is almost identical to what you have now, i would suggest a 2.2 ROM.
not that it makes any difference, you could send your phone off for repair with a 2.2.1 ROM even if it came with 2.2 only. you just have to say you updated thru KIES if anyone asks. not that they will
so basically if i flashed my phone with any JPP it would work just as well as it is now?
If you flash clockworkmod recovery you can backup and restore your firmware using that. Darkyy also wrote a guide to creating an exact copy of your ROM you can flash through Odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960946
To answer the straight forward part of your question....the best tool for backing up the entire firmware, similar to taking a disc image of your PC so that is can be restored and return your device to its exact state when you took the backup is Nandroid, which is baked into Clockwork Mod and is therefore part of almost every custom SGS kernel.
Just go into Recovery mode, select Backup/Restore and opt for Backup, it will take a perfect image of your phone and save it by date and time on your internal SD. Later on you can restore it from recovery, by selecting Backup/Restore > Restore.
Next, Baseband is NOT your ROM, it is actually the Modem.
SGS firmware is made up of 4 elements...
Kernel - The interface between hardware and software, essentially the drivers and BIOS.
ROM or PDA - The operating system itself, aka the Applications layer.
Modem - Controlling the WiFi/Cellular connections.
CSC - A group of config files that set your region, carrier and APNs
Some firmware contains all of these elements, while it is also possible to flash the Kernel, Modem or CSC independently.
When you look at Settings > About on your phone it will list the following...
Firmware version: The Android version, on an SGS that is either 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1 or 2.3.3
Baseband Version: The Modem
Kernel Version: The kernel
Build Number: The actual ROM
Thanks rschenck
I have been wanting to know these details god to know what each of them does.
Just got my update finally!

If anyone is manually flashing the ROM using ODIN, check your CSC beforehand. There are two different regions of NZ that Samsung released the update for, which are TNZ and NZC. If you flash the wrong CSC version, your CSC will turn to an unknown state meaning that you won't be receiving OTA updates in the future. I have the Taiwan version (BRI) and I flashed the NZC version and now the CSC state is unknown. It's still Lollipop, but you will have to manually flash every updates released from this point forward.

It must be how Samsung programmed its CSC for the ROM. When the official ROM comes out for your region, you can restore using Kies 3 or Smart Switch. Then, you will get OTA updates as usual like you did before.

weird, I flashed NZC (formerly had BRI) and mine was still BRI. I did some benchmarking and I guess it was a little "dirty" and was getting really low results. So I just went into recovery wiped data and cache. Now my device claims to be NZC and works flawlessly. Best of luck

Unresponsive touchscreen after Lollipop
Hi there guys,
After updating my Galaxy Note 4 n910U to Lollipop via OTA, the touchscreen just became unresponsive. The update went on smoothly and my phone booted fine and it's on Lollipop now. I can navigate normally using the screen through the S-Pen but it just would not respond to touch. Very frustrating. New device, been waiting for this update and this happens. Please help.
Thanks!

You could try factory reset in recovery followed by a cache wipe and a repeat factory reset. Flash the NZC firmware again. After flashing again go to recovery and do a factory reset followed by a cache wipe and another factory reset. Boot and check if you are able to still see the csc in unknown status.
thx for the tip,
I'll probably wait for the HK version of Lollipop and then go back to the original csc

Bro, you realise you responded to an old old thread? 5.1.1 is next U variant update, not yet arrived
The Firmware I am on is G977UVRU0ASDG
I tried to update OTA and update assistant for PC and both failed saying this firmware cannot be updated. So I am really confused. Can someone confirm any further info about this firmware version? I enjoy the phone and I decided one day to check why I haven't gotten Android 10, and thus this is where I am now.
Also is it as simple as flashing the latest firmware via odin? If so, which site offers a dependable VZW firmware I can try flashing? Can I keep my files or would I have to make a backup first, flash via odin, then restore (which I hate to do because setting up a new phone takes so much time).
But most importantly I am curious to know more about this firmware version and what it is! Seems like VZW doesn't think its theirs. Thank you in advance.
Smartswitch says SDG, what is SDG? Is there a simple refresh/fix so that I can get OTA updates? Please help!

Hello everyone,
Last week, I did something stupid. I was looking into updating my Samsung Galaxy S10 to Android 13, and for that, I had to perform a bootleg on my phone. Since I don't have enough knowledge about it, I followed a video tutorial. However, I don't think they explained everything correctly because I encountered an error while loading my phone. To fix this, I had to reinstall the firmware and then restart it. But after the restart, the Samsung interface and all my apps appeared much larger, which is extremely annoying. I have already tried going to the accessibility options and adjusting the icon grid, but it only helps with a small part of the interface. Can someone help me?
I know it's dumb to do this without enough knowledge, but I still wanted to give it a try.
What do you mean by "bootleg"?

I'm not sure how it is called I thought it called bootleg.
I got stuck in the blue Download screen for samsung s10.

After that I had to reinstall the firmware but I didn't find a firmware option for my country so I installed from a country nextdoor.
When I signed in to the phone the UI was waaay bigger than before.
You mean you installed a different CSC? As long as the firmware is for your model number, it should be fine. To change the UI size go into Display Settings.
What is the model number of your device? I can help you look for the latest firmware on SamMobile.

Yes other country but the right firmware. I already changed the display settings but that doesn't solve the problem. my interface in different apps is also way bigger.
My model number is: SM-G973F/DS
Country: Belgium
(but I installed from the Netherlands, but i think that is not the problem)

What should I do to get my old ui back should I do another firmware update to hopefully get my old interface back. I think it could have something to do with the android version?
Before I did the firmware manually I just had the stock phone with its automatic update. I see there are different android version for the samsung s10. with the firmware update I now have:
android: 12
One UI version: 4.1
