[Q] Android 2.3 - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just caught wind that the 2.3 SDK is currently available. Anybody able to confirm this for me?
If this is true, is anyone taking a look at it?

Its on the Android Developers site.

Is there any work being done to it? I understand to port it to our phones is going to take awhile if it is at all possible, but has anyone started? Just trying to figure out where our poor little Heros stand now.

Just the SDK has been released, not to mention it hasn't been rolled out to any devices yet, will have to wait a few weeks for it to hit AOSP before anything can be done.

one easy question

will g1 ever get updated to 2.0 or 2.1 and does anyone know when they will release drivers for it
One easy answer: nobody knows.
There's a lot of rumours and claims flying around but nothing official.
I believe the last "semi-official" word was that all Android devices would get 2.1, but no one really knows how this will work with the G1, since it may require a "dumbed-down" version to fit on our phones.

yep, lots of rumors, but the chances are probably not. im planning to get the htc hd2 and other people are also getting new phones. as that happens, tmobile and android are paying less attention to older devices......BUT the g1 and mytouch are both developing devices (adp), so there is still a chance

[Q] Will Froyo releases be leaked ?

Why are samsung leaking these to test, The FroYo FW must be into a good stage of development by now, I am unsure why we are 'beta testing' this and hoping for FroYo to be released working well straight off the bat,
Do you guys think we will get FroYo releases before it is officially released? I mean all these firmwares we are testing will be made into one that gets officially released.

Please think before you post a thread, the title generated quite a few reports !

Of course we will get a leaked release.

I'm very happy with all my Samsung mobiles (...,blade, i780, Omnia2, ...) I hope Samsung STEP IN into this community and help us help them

I nearly fell from chair.
IF they would release thier Froyo as beta to this forum - they could get beta feedback by reading about bugs posted by us AND does not have to deal with the consequences we know how to reflash - "normal" users dont.
So Win Win for both.
Yeah, you really should have titled the thread as a question. As worded, it makes folks think it's actually happened.

I fired up a google search and i found a lot of hits about a froyo alpha on a galaxy spica. Maybe some things got mixed up.
Yep, can't find anything about Froyo alphas or leaks for the Galaxy S, just for some of the older Galaxy phones.
I think we Android owners are a fairly impatient bunch.
In the time it's taken for the iPhone to go from 3.0 to 4.0, Android has had:
- 1.6 Donut
- 2.0 / 2.1 Eclair
- 2.2 Froyo
The phone manufacturers must have a heart attack every time a new version of Android is released and their handset owners immediately begin screaming for it...
Luckily the Galaxy S is the flagship of Samsung which they intend to sell 10 million of, so chances are we'll be seeing good support and the stream of beta firmwares shows they're not sitting still.
Froyo has been confirmed for August in Korea, and most likely September in international markets.
We've got to be patient and remember the Nexus One is still the ONLY Android phone that has received an official Froyo update as of yet. Even the Desire, EVO 4G, Droid, Incredible and Droid X are still on the waiting list.
From the sounds of it August-October will be the time the various handset manufacturers will be rolling out their Froyo updates.

Let's just hope Cyanogen gets one of these Galaxy S and starts porting CMmod to Galaxy S =)
I'm selling my HTC Magic right now to help buying this phone

Well they don't do themselves any favours by launching a new phone every couple of weeks and insisting on putting their own UI on top of Android.
Looking further afield: anyone think that Samsung will put Gingerbread on this baby?

Possibly but I think I have to go with the sceptic masses here that say samsung support isn't good in longterm and so I guess they won't do that. Unless ofc gingerbread is going to bring the massive UI update that vanilla android so desperately needs for usablity and samsung decides that touchwiy isnt necessary anymore.

There are developers assigned to port CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (T-Mobile US version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729364
Unfortunately, looking at Wes Garner's Twitter, he seems rather more keen on the Slide than the Vibrant:
I like the slide better
@wesgarner so does that mean your gonna keep developing for the slide?
@XJRodzx probably more for it than the vibrant

So don't know how that's necessarily going to work out. The intention is there, though, anyway - hope it's still in progress!
I have doubts with Gingerbread...from what we know so far, it's supposed to have a (MUCH NEEDED!) UI overhaul based around the Gallery's sexy look.
If a phone is launched with a certain interface, chances are the manufacturer probably wouldn't be keen on releasing an update that changes everything because of the issue with it being different to what the buyer paid for. Basically, it changes the product, and the picture on the box is no longer what you've bought. It's all well and good with something like Eclair to Froyo since it's largely just performance improvements and some new features rather than an overhaul.
If anything, I think Samsung would be more likely to release a new version of the Galaxy S at Gingerbread's launch. Much like it's doubtful the HTC Desire / Evo 4G / Incredible will get Gingerbread updates. Instead, HTC will probably have new devices ready for the new interface.
The Nexus One is the only current device I believe has a chance of Gingerbread, mainly because it's the 'official' Google phone and has been promoted and sold as a developer phone. They'll be wanting some nice apps ready for Gingerbread when it launches which will obviously need to be in development before Gingerbread-equipped phones launch.

ICS Port to the Atrix

So Google has released the SDK for ICS here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.html
I've been doing some dev work on my Toshiba Thrive and wanted to know if anyone wanted to start working to port over ICS to our phones. I'm unsure about whether or not we'll get an actual ICS update so I figured I'd post up and gauge interest!
Let me know guys
Correct me if I'm wrong but don't we need the ICS source to be released to even start on a official port?

Its possible to port the SDK, but it will be harder, messier and things generally wont work 100%. This was the case with Honeycomb
The Cyanogen Mod team issued a statement saying that they will not release CM9 until the source is released. Don't you guys think that it's way too risky to use the SDK? Afterall, the source will be made available just a few weeks after the Galaxy Nexus will be made available to the general public (Source: Android Police).

The problem with an SDK port is that you have no control over it. Its entirely up to luck if things work, and even then things wont work as well as they could were they to be compiled for the device in question. Also because of this, any work that goes into an SDK port would be 100% useless once the source is released, so there's no point in even starting it. For that reason I highly doubt CM9 will see any work done until the source hits.
Its not going to be too long now. The Galaxy Nexus will be out in a few weeks to a month, and the source shouldn't be too far behind. I dont expect us to have stable ICS this year, but hopefully we'll have something by early 2012.
Over in the desier hd forum they have a dump from a working device that we might be able to do something with.
I figured working on porting the sdk would prepare us for the source code release. We should be able to quickly port it over once the source is released.......hopefully. I don't see the GNex coming to at&t until early next year so I'm hoping to get a working port of ICS as quickly as possible on my atrix and I figure the only way to ensure that is to take initiative.
I really want the GNex though. That phone looks pretty cool. I hope it doesn't get a Verizon only release in November

Google-ish N build

So, it's quite possible that our much beloved Nexus 5 doesn't receive final Android N, afterall.
In that case, I was wondering it anyone would be interested in providing a custom N build, with no changes, compared to Google's own build.
I mean, ODEX, non-zipaligned, no root, nothing. Just stock like stock Google software.
I'd pay for this.
Is it possible for someone to create a ZIP that can be sideloaded in the default recovery?

When the final release is out, it's pretty safe to say that someone will make a build for the Nexus 5. Until then, there is nothing devs can do right now. Google currently doesn't have everything available to do so.
Yes, I know.
I'm talking about the future, after N is uploaded to AOSP.
I know there will be lots of ROMs, but I just wanted stock Google software, no root, theme, anything.
Basically, an unofficial Google OTA.
I'm willing to pay for this, and I can gather many people to join this cause.
probably Google will release android N to Nexus 5, but its the last official release to it. Just like Nexus 4 on Lollipop era, was pretty the same thing.
How is that surprising they want you to buy the next device so if they drop support look at it this way you can always install a ROM and I'm confident you will see something up fast

Nop, Google won't release the Android N for Nexus 5, as they dropped the support for newer releases in October 2015. But of course that as soon as the source code is out we'll get the update because the devs will take care of that

Since you aren't clairvoyant I'll wait to see. The N7 2013 got MM but if you go by the date listed on googles site they stoped officially supporting it in July of 2015. And if not, eh.. There will be tons of N roms once its released. Most likely day one.

True though xD
Looks like afterwards I have reason
We all know there will be lots of ROMs.
But the purpose of this thread, is to get to know if any developer would like to provide a stock "Google" equivalent, for those that want their N5 to feel like it's been updated by Google itself.
I'll sure try, especially if there is money on the line lol
I won't make any promises, but I'll gladly take a look when the source gets out if I still have the device.
I've been reading stuff on Reddit, and many people would appreciate this "Google experience" ROM.

No it is not officially over, nothing on that page confirms it is officially over. Only the ''Guaranteed" support is over for the Nexus 5.
That doesn't mean it won't get Android N, I think the chance for a official release of Android N for the N5 is really small but there's still a chance it will get it.
Till the final release of Android N is out no one knows anything for sure if it comes to the future of the N5.

I know he used to do it for the N5, pretty sure I've seen his builds for a few other phones as well. That was his thing. When a new Android OS comes out he usually releases a stock / AOSP build. Non rooted, no mods, etc. I'm not sure if he's still around though, but it can't hurt to ask.

Looking at the history of ROMs in the past here on XDA, there is usually always someone who ports a pure AOSP build with no mods. I wouldn't worry about it much. Especially this early.
I hope so.
Not really into modding/rooting/whatnot.
A stock Google-ish ROM for me, and I'll be happy.
Dont worry man.. Nexus 5 is still pretty popular phone and dev friendly so IMHO you shouldn't be worried at all.. There is i believe 99% chance u will have Android n, just be patient for a couple of months when the Android n will be officially released

So you always start with stable os and then try and get it working on future/newer releases once you have a stable build. Ideally it will be 16 but honestly it may have to start at 15 even. I'll know more once I get it to build. I am still trying to figure out why no one has done this already for this device. I've had no issues getting vanilla gsis running on this phone so it's odd that no one is developing unless I'm missing something obvious (I've been out of the loop with Android for a few years) or nobody who builds has the phone they opted for a one plus/Samsung/rog etc. I'm hoping the reason is that we just lack developers not that there's a hurdle I'm not aware of. I last built Android on KitKat so I've been trying to get caught up on the development and changes since then. Our hardware is almost identical to the note and there's a ton of devices with aosp builds that share our peripherals so the majority of the data is there from what I can see.

Great to hear! Hope it goes well!
I too was wondering if it was just a matter of lack of developers considering Razer has released the sources for the device on their developer portal (Link if anyone wants to check it out)
And a question, will the built in Dolby Atmos be a possibility to port over to run in Lineage?
anything further on plans for this?
I'm going to be building myself soon I'll post if I'm successful I've only built for one other device before so we will see.
