I rooted my hero using the one click app and it worked. Upon reboot where I wanted to flash a nandroid, the recovery boot loader is gone and just shows a phone with a x through it. Did my root not work? In the passed I had it and now it is gone. I had an issue and I had to put on the stock rom. It is now at version 2.32.651.2. How can I get my old nandroid to install when my boot loader is gone?
You may need to RUU to a older version then root from there...
I tried that too. I used RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release.exe and it told be I had the wrong boot loader. I was very sad.

I had an issue trying to downgrade from this new sprint rom, I read that you
need to downgrade basically in order, (so you'd need 651.7's RUU, then 651.6
before you can run the 651.5). It's a non issue as I was able to root the phone
in question without downgrading. If the phone is functional, and you just want
to verify that you are rooted, you can either use ADB from the android sdk, or
download the terminal emulator from the market, and check to see if you have
root that way.
From the shell, you will see something similar to this;
sh-3.2$
and if you type su the prompt should change to something like this;
sh-3.2#
if that's the case, you are rooted, and can use adb to flash a custom recovery.
There are plenty of guides on here, but if you need the assistance, I can walk
you through flashing a recovery. send me a PM if you need assistance, and I'll try to help.

I bought my phone used and I used the universal androot app to root it without locking the bootloader. I want to take it back to just the way it was when it came out of the box. Are there easy to follow step by step directions anywhere? I've searched but everything says it assumes you know how to use adb and fastboot. I don't. Do directions exist for dummies? It sure was a piece of cake to restore my old iPhone.
Yeah, I had the same problem a few weeks ago. My suggestion is look at some tutorials for installing custom ROMs and then reverse engineer those once you've learned how to use adb and fastboot.

Kind of like that, but this part confused me.
"Once you have this installed, add a folder path for the ADB utility to your System Environment Variables “path” variable."
Ok, when I get to step 7, the command prompt says "FAILED (remote: not allowed)"
What's up with that? HELLLLLLP!
I did a manual erase user data, but now when I go to Type 'fastboot flash userdata userdata.img'
the command prompt tells me FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
Help?
Okay, sounds like you're panicking.
There's kinda like a fix everything button, and that's a passimg.
Grab it here: (remove the spaces, I'm not allowed to post links)
w w w . megaupload . com/?d=7JQU3MV0
All you gotta do is put that on the root of your SD card. Boot into bootloader mode (hold down trackball when powering) and select recovery. That's all. It'll detect passimg, and fix everything.
The caveat here, is that you'll be on EPE76 - which was super duper annoying to actually upgrade from (but I eventually found a FRF91 rom that worked - I'll see if I can find it and post it for you).
But yeah. Download that. Fix everything. Enjoy
From EPE76 can't you just do an OTA update to upgrade to Froyo? And what exactly does this passimg do and how does it work? I got adb and fastboot working and everything, I just get errors when I try to flash. Do you have to have an unlocked bootloader to do this stuff? I just used the universal androot app to gain root, so the bootloader wasn't actually unlocked.
No. the passimg will just automatically flash radio, recovery, etc. so you don't have to. If you've got it working manually now, no need to use it.
The passimg does pretty much what you were asking about. The Nexus One has the code name "Passion", so "pass/img" is the original factory shipping image for the Nexus One. The OTA should then** come to your phone, maybe in a few hours, but maybe not for a while.
And if I do the passimg it shouldn't screw up the phone since I'm already running froyo and this will kick me back to 2.1?
Read - Nexus One Wiki, "Unroot / Restore your Nexus", PASSIMG.ZIP method.
Written especially to avoid threads like this one.
Well it worked perfectly and now I'm running 2.1 EPE76. Is there a way to force it to update to Froyo?
you should be able to open up your dialer and type
*#*#CHECKIN#*#*
or

That's a negative. It just says checkin result success, but doesn't download any update. When I go to about phone and system updae it says my system is up to date.
If I was reading correctly I should upgrade from EPE76 to FRF85B and then I should get the FRF91 OTA? Can anyone confirm this?
I got everything working and I'm back to completely stock Froyo FRF91 and I just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread for guiding my annoying newbie ass through the process and teaching me a wealth of knowledge about the Android OS along the way. Thanks again!
For future reference, if you want to restore your phone while having no issues accessing it, just get Rom Manager. Use it to download and install a stock unrooted Froyo rom (just make sure to select wipe data and do not select the rooting options).
Very easy to restore. The passimg method comes in very handy if you cannot even boot into the OS.
Yep, I broked it.
So, wanna hear a fun story?
I got a free Hero, and tried to root it. First thing I tried was z4root. It failed. Then I tried RegawMod. Fail. Perhaps it didn't help that I had the latest stock version of the Hero, 2.32.651.x
So, then, me being a wise guy, decided that I'd just try doing it myself through ADB. I tried to follow CyanogenMod adb rooting instructions HERE. I kept getting stuck at step 5:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Click to collapse
It kept saying something about how it couldn't chmod "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" because it wasn't a directory. Well, duh, this I know...but I couldn't figure out how to make adb understand that.
Well of course, because I couldn't chmod rageagainstthecage, I couldn't move on to the next step, actually running ratc:
/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

Now, this is where the fun really begins. I rebooted the Hero, just to see if that would help, and then I was going to try again. Trouble is, the phone wouldn't boot. Kept getting stuck on an endless boot on the HTC screen. So, I went into clockworkmod, wiped everything (except boot), and then restored the nandroid backup I had made before I started this whole process. Still no dice. Still stuck at an endless HTC boot screen. I tried a hard reset on the fastboot menu just for ****s and giggles...but still nothing doing. I also tried running the RUU app on my computer to install an older version of the stock ROM, but RUU would not recognize my device (even though HTC sync and ALL of the drivers are installed, and I had it mounted to the computer in clockworkmod).
So...I guess my question is - does anyone have any clue how to fix this? I still want to root the damn thing, but right now I'd be happy just to get the stock rom back up and running. I know if I could find a stock ROM I could probably flash it through clockworkmod...alas, the only one I found turned out to be a corrupt zip file.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure how, as all three methods I tried to root failed. I even tested it with terminal emulator, got all $, no #. Of course, that was back when I could actually get to Terminal Emulator.

look here for the RUU.zip made by tehdarkknight, get it. Then run in with the instructions from jasonmaloneys thread about fastboot without s-off. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063843
EDIT: that *should" unroot you back to stock. Then follow the REAL rooting thread (adb method) by regaw leinad.
PLEASE DISREGARD this thread. I'm an idiot...apparently the damn thing was rooted before I got it...which explains why my attempts to root it weren't working. Flashed CM7 in clockworkmod and it booted up with no problems.

My story is similar. Boot into hboot stay in fastboot mode and DO NOT VOL DOWN. once youve booted into hboot, plug the hero In and get the ruu started up. Once you've started the ruu, if you get the connection error message, click the action button (trackball) on 'fastboot usb mode' and for some reason, the ruu seemed to connect to it then. Hope it works out for ya.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App
Also, when rooting with z4, do a temporary first then after a successful temporary root, hit the permanent button. That's done the trick for me in countless seemingly hopeless situations.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App
So I just recently rooted my Sprint Hero using z4root after failing in several other ways. I would like to put on a custom recovery and start messing with custom roms, but I am running into numerous roadblocks.
For one, the recovery on the phone is corrupted. I'm not sure how, but if I boot to recovery I get a red exclamation point symbol.
So I tried to use adb and flash_image to install the recovery, but discovered that flash_image is not on my phone.
I have found the binary for flash_image but have not been able to put it into /system/bin in order to execute it. I would have to put adb into root mode to push it directly there, but can't since I am still running Release code. I can't move it from /sdcard or /data because I got a cross-device error.
I did figure out how to run flash_image from /sdcard, but I just got 'out of memory' errors.
I have tried downgrading to 2.27.651.5 since that seems to be the version everyone uses to fix anything, but the ruu fails to install due to Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error
I have been able to downgrade to 2.27.651.6, but that didn't help anything.
I am clueless at this point and feel like I have done my due diligence. Any ideas?
I should also add my current config:
SW number 2.32.651.2
Baseband 2.42.02.10.29
Kernel 2.6.29-ba77cf03
HBOOT-1.47.0000

Yes. I would be thankful for any suggestions.
Z4 will give you root but not a recovery I believe. The reason why you have the red triangle isn't because you have a corrupt recovery its because you have no revovery. Ill send you a pm with something that might help.

I never received a PM.
Have you tried simply installing ROM Manager to install the recovery that way? That's generally the quickest and easiest way to do it, and should set you up for getting everything going.

ROM Manager is no longer available from the market. If you have an .apk you could give me that would be great.

I looked in the market and saw Rom Manager in mine. Make sure that you flash the recovery 1st and then do a backup (nandroid) so you have your current phone just in case something happens when you start flashing new roms or something. I don't know why you don't show the app in the market. I don't think that Z4 would change your build.prop, but I have never used Z4 either.
I apologize on the delay. If you haven't solved your issue yet check your pm's.

Huh? This is one of the reasons why most of the knowledgeable members are helping less and less. When you receive advice/help the least you can do is post if it worked or not.

I've rooted my Nexus One a long long time ago, and eventually reverted to it's original state. Let's skip ahead a year..
I wan't to use my Nexus One again until I can get my hands on a Nexus 4. I'm trying to root this bad boy, but run into a problem with every method. I got the one click method to work, but it wouldn't boot up. And when I try to go into Bootloader for recovery, it checks for the PASSIMG.ZIP file and then updates. If I click no, it makes no difference, it doesn't let me do anything. Updating will restore the phone to stock(unrooted). So I deleted PASSIMG.ZIP from the SD card. Ever since, I can actually click on Recovery, but I run into trouble(see further below). S is ON btw, I don't remember what this was, but I'm sure I had it OFF before? I have been using an iPhone for the past year and a half, so I apologize for being a noob. I'm not to tech savvy when it comes to these terms, either.
Short explanation:
One Click Root - I can root it, but when I go to Bootloader Recovery it shows the Android guy and a triangle around !
Using the old school method using Windows terminal, recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-passion.img was flashed without problem.
But I can't access Recovery!
In the end I'm trying to at least have an ICS ROM, or Jellybean(Really wanna try Google Now or whatever) if possible.
Check the Wiki for instructions on how to bootloader unlock your phone. Much easier. You can then flash everything you want using fastboot (so make sure you have the fastboot driver installed correctly).
Btw, the triangle means you still have stock recovery.

The unlock padlock icon means the bootloader is unlocked, correct? I've done that. And I actually went through that, and flashed the custom Recovery, still the same result. I'll retry it again.
I figured it out, but I don't get it...
I did this in kind of a different route, so just incase someone runs into a similar problem some how:
I rooted the phone using the one click root software on a windows PC, the N1 was successfully rooted.
However, same error recovery, even after adb flashing recovery(followed wiki and unlockr tutorial).
What I did different to fix the issue, was after the root, I downloaded Rom manager(yes I've done this before too, but...), I flashed the recovery via Rom Manager. After it didn't work(sadface).
I tried it again, but just out of frustration I re-flashed it after flashing. So I flashed the recovery twice, back to back. And poof, I check bootloader, go into recovery, and there it is(just like it used to be).
Close this I guess, (an embarrassing)problem has been solved.
Hello, my phone (htc one sprint) I just recently rooted it today, put a ROM on it, CyanoGen Mod Installer, didnt like it too much, as I missed the basic functions of controlling my tv, and everything etc. So I decided to go back, now the thing is, I had a backup ROM and everything, but now its all gone, all the functionality isnt really working, all I can really do is go into bootloader, fastboot etc, when I do recovery, or factory reset, it takes me to Cockworkmod recover, which doesnt have my backup in it, and so, I went to the HTC Support page, downloaded the RUU, couldnt work, did some research, found that I need S-ON to be S-OFF, and I'm stuck on doing so, without having an OS on my htc one.
I've been doing this for nearly 9 hours straight now, and am just completely stressed on what to do. Please, if you have any insight or any application I can use to fix my solution, and get back the default OS/ROM I would be very much appreciated,
I do have sprint insurance, but I was told that rooted phones voids it, along with the warranty...
If you have any questions please ask, and I will answer as much as I can. Anything helps

If there is any way you can get back on the bootloader, then it it possible to flash cWM and get a new from on it. I hope someone with more knowledge on this topic can help you.

I can get it back on, with ease, I just don't know what to do there after, or put on another ROM from there... I believe there is a way of pushing the ROM onto cWM with the windows command etc. or something, idk.. I am still new to this, i just don't know how to run a boot.img file onto my device, let alone push it on there, as I cant access the device via windows explorer.

From recovery:
Put the rom you want in the folder you use to run your commands from(ADB.exe and Fastboot.exe) you can use this folder also http://d-h.st/DFp
Open a cmd window fro that folder
In the cmd window type
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/
Once it says it's complete in the cmd window(it will take a few minutes so don't freak out) click install to make sure it's on your phone (but do not install yet)
Go back to the main recovery screen and choose Wipe and wipe cache/dalvik cache/system/data
Then go back to install and flash the rom
Any other questions PM me or post them here
