N00b question (messed up a flash) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
So basically I got a bit over-excited and flashed a new ROM without disabling lag fixes... now whenever I flash a ROM or want to disable lag fixes, the phone just doesn't start up unless I put it into jfs (the fix I was using when I messed up) basically I can't boot the phone with rfs anymore.....
Has this happened to anyone else? Is it easily fixed?

this is wrong forum to post
by the way what does this means "Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App " if ur phone is bricked than how can u send it from SGS ? u got another one?

I can boot but only if I reapply lag fixes, can't boot without a lag fix enabled.... sorry if I wasn't clear
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

well to be true, i never disable lagfix before installing any new firmware to my phone. let me tell u what i do --
1) First flash I9000XWJM8 ( eclair rom) with RE-Partition and 512.pit
2) format sd card
3) flash new froyo rom ( whichever i want to )
4) Flash Kernel whichever i want to.
thats it. thats how i do it and it always work for me. Dont know if its the right thing or not but i always do it this way

Hmmmm, OK thanks, I'll give it a go!

so?? successful or not?

Just got it all back up and running (after a brief detour via cyanogeb beta... fun!) And it seems to have sorted it! Thanks alot!

Disable lagfix, it does not work for me.

For some reason, disabling lagfix does not work for me. I am new here and I began about 2 days ago by flashing Assonance v5.0 to my Samsung Captivate. It's really nice and I love it a lot!!!!! But like some of the users who flashed to it, it's kinda using up my battery. So I'm taking up a suggestion to install JL3 Modem + xCal 2.1.1. First though, I must disable lagfix.
I reboot into Clockwork recovery and go through the steps: (advanced SpeedMod ULK features>LAGFIX options>Disable lagfix) Then I reboot, then click Restore with Backup. I have done this about 3 times and it doesn't seem to disable. I am assuming that it will stop displaying "Disable lagfix" once it's disabled and display something like "enable lagfix instead". So maybe it really has been disabled? idk, thanks for the help so far, I've been really impressed! Also, somewhere in the process, I lost all my apps, configuration (accounts, sync), and contacts. But I have those backed up so no worries about data loss.
Here are my old posts in the Assonance thread, but I felt like I was hijakcing it with my "can't disable lagfix" hijinks. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856877&page=204
Sent you a pm. I think it its disabled but you do not realize it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I had a felling that was the case. Was just waiting for someone to say, "oh it does that all the time". Well I might try it when I get out of work. What would happen if I flashed the modem thing without disabling it first ...
Worst case you get stock in boot loop and have to flash stock with odin. I do not think out is likely though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Well, I flashed both of them and nothing really happened ... it booted as normal. I guess it has been applied? Is there anyway to verify. Otherwise thanks, I guess it was disabled ... just wanted to make sure I suppose.
Look for a folder on your sd that says voodoo.
Go to settings, about phone, baseband. What does it say.
Boot back into recovery. Does it bring you to a blue lettered recovery
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes recovery is blue, there are only four options. I got there by pressing "go to recovery 2e" or something like that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You have the new kernel.
You should still have the update zip from rom manager saved to your sd. If you do not open rom manager and flash clockwork recovery. When in the blue menu select reinstall packages, will have to do this twice, should bring you to green clockwork recovery. You no longer have all of the same options in recovery.
To disable your current lagfix navigate to your voodoo folder on your sd. Create a folder inside named disable-lagfix. Reboot.

[Q] Cappy Bricked??? Pls help!!!! unique problem!!!

Ok i know and have seen that there are many experienced users in this forum, so i give you this!!Pls help sum1!!!
I think i bricked my fone, tried to get cwm 3 on it, then while rebooting, it wont reboot. went into download mode with odin (3 button fix) (i have done this 9-10 times before, not a noob to this), selected pit and tar and hit start. odin stuck on factoryfs and fully orange screen on fone. removed battery, fone, usb, odin restart, tried again, yellow screen. again. red screen. now got frustrated. tried normal odin(not the 3 button fix), again yellow screen.took out battery to try again, but fone wont start/go in dl/recvry mode anymore. tried on 2 different comps with xp/win7. no go.
SCREWED??
BTW, i ordered a jig.should arrive by end of week.
It'll be fine after you get your jig.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
same thing happened to me...but i just got it replaced..as there was no way i could wake it up...but try Jig..or just get it replaced...every captivate is under warranty...tell them u were doing official Froyo update and lost electricity or something....
yes will try that and post.
In the meantime, can sum1 pls run me thru the steps to install custom ROM on preinstalled froyo cappy? My prev 1 was stock eclair, i filed 4 insurance and am sure the new 1s gonna b stock froyo. I have heard that there are a no. f probs with stock froyo phones????

flash to stock using full Odin(full odin to avoid loosing 3 button combo), flash CWM.Zip....flash any froyo custum rom
or just flash the fix for sign verification (its somewhere in the threads) then you can avoid flashing to stock....just flash CWM and Custom rom

Most of the custom roms don't require flashing to stock now a days. But if its mentioned in the instructions than I would do it.
But definitely you should disable lagfix and stuff before flashing over new rom.

Sounds as though your bootloader got hammered.
Yes, as another posted, with 3e recovery you'll get a signing error, but there is a workaround, depending on your device and ROM you're using to have files pass through as if it were on 2e recovery. Another method is if one passes files that are unsigned. (only load if it's from a trusted source)
Is it possible you performed a nandriod backup before this debacle occurred?
If so, try a restore from recovery with your last nandroid backup. This should restore the bootloader and correct partitioning on your disk.

inncidentally i did do a couple of nandroids before "all the **** hit the fan". and i could use it to restore. but how? my fone simply wont turn on, neither go in2 recv/ dl. so how 2 restore???????
all 2.2 have 3e recovery, custom roms built on 2.2 come pre cracked.
here is the 3e recovery fix. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
it works on all 2.2 stocks with 3e.
if you are rooted using "one click root 1.7" (NOT ODIN ONE CLICK!!!) you dont need adb commands just root explorer to mount and replace file. or use adb to mount and push file. the instructions in the thread have the 2 methods mixed together.

Dude, that's just plain wrong. Let each person decide on their own who's advice to take and who's to ignore. It's an open forum and we all have the right to share our knowledge and experience. The focus here should be helping people get the assistance they need, not to diminish someone's credibility based on a personal opinion.
In short, grow up.

ok, but then do u mean my bootloader is not damaged? can it be still repaired by using jig? can i restore nandroid?? but how 2 do so since my fone wont turn on at all?
What happens when you do turn it on- nothing? Or does it hang on the boot screen?

I had the very same problem. Your bootloater is boogered up now. I sent mine to an xda member and he fixed it.
Even with a jig I wasn't able to do anything. My phone would go into d/l mode with it but that was all it would do.
I paid $50 to have mine fixed which in my opinion is well worth it. That doesn't include shipping costs. I had connexion2005 fix it for me. He a great guy and does very fast work. It beats buying a new phone.
Hope this helps.

Problem with teamhacksung's ICS rom!!! Need help desperately!!!

ok guys here is the deal. I just flashed teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Captivate (BUILD 16) and faced multiple problems :
-no service at all
-phone doesnt recognize internal sd card, and keeps asking to insert sd card to be able to use camera and media player
-no option to choose wifi that i want to use
-cannot connect phone with computer via usb even mass storage is on
I need help desperately guys as soon as possible!!! can someone tell how to fix these problems, or tell me how to fix connection problems so i can copy another rom to my phone, or maybe how to go back to stock settings and stock rom !!
try flashing different ROM, may be?
Nostalgia 2.1 is out.
Check the sticky in the dev section for an odin flashable stock rom. Don't use cwm. Start back at kk4, flash a cwm kernel (corn or similar), then try cm9 again.

Hey guys i got new question for u, well now while im dealing with encryption problem i used the guide that yall mentioned and im having little problem (i hope its little) so heres the deal : whenever i try to pull or push file using adb i got device not found error. Im trying to push vold.flstab file that i somehow got out system/etc folder on my phone without using oull command since it wasnt working. I got it out and modified it but i cant push it back. How can i fix this error or how can i create a zip file to flash this file to my phone using cwm ???
Nevermind guys, figured out how to change that file (using root explorer) but now when i changed i was supposed to restart phone (thats what guide said) but phone now stucks on boot screen. really dont know what to do -.-
My friend says to me all the time... "your doing it wrong" and "just stop hacking your phone and u won't have that problem"
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yeea, I figured out that way now when my phone is totally busted, im gonna get new one (Captivate again) and not gonna mess a lot with it as I did with this one.
Really you shouldn't have to worry about completely messing up(but don't hold me to it) I thought I was done a couple times, but even when my captivate was soft bricked and my computer wouldn't recognize it, a USB jig pops it into download mode that we all know and love ... and from there you can flash back to whatever you like.
By the way...when is the last backup you have made? If it was right before you flashed, just go into download mode, flash to whatever you were on, restore your nandroid, then start over the right way(or choose not to flash that again)

Help needed!

Hey all,
I just went from ICS to Stock 2.3.6 and the first thing I noticed is that after the flashing process where de phones go to recovery and loads for some time it asked me for a password... I tried many things but without luck, i flashed TWRP and wiped data and everything then it went away and I could normally use my phone...
Now I set up a Pin lock on my phone and I know 100% sure i know the pin because im using it for a year or so now but it keeps telling me the pincode is incorrect, so i cant unlock it.
Wiped everything again and did the same thing but again it keeps telling me its wrong while I know its correct...
How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance!

Well, according to this: "I wiped data and everything then it went away and I could normally use my phone...", it seems (at least that's what I think) that you have set a software-based pin code (instead of the simcard code itself) from which you thought it was the simcard code all the time. so your simcard code remained unchanged. This is just my speculation, try the original code. (if you can still find it) Because wiping any partition would never delete information (pincode) on your simcard.

It may sound as im advertising, but what you can try is flashing broodROM RC5 with odin, a bunch of people actually reported that if your stuck in "your" situation, a flash of broodrom goodness can do miracles. I have never experienced such problems but you can always try and flash my rom, if it works again then install stock

Or can someone thats using Broodrom rc5 give me his framework file or some system files that the lockscreen may be using?

Is there a way to force update to the firmware Kies was giving?
Btw i noticed when I set a pin screen lock and afterwards I press 'No Screenlock' it doesn't ask for the pin to confirm, and as long as I can remember it did when you wanted to remove the screenlock(back in the days when it was working lol).

A custom ROM! A custom ROM! My phone for a custom ROM!.!

Okay, I have no idea why, but my phone doesn't seem to like any ROM except for the stock. Every ROM, every update I've tried, has just gone and bricked my phone. I'm a newbie as far as development goes, but I do know my way around flashing, applying updates from SD and stuff. And I'm careful not to mess with files designed for the other ace. I also follow instructions to the letter. I'm as scared of bricks as anyone else.
So I was wondering whether any of you could help me out here. Do tell me if it's better to stick with the stock ROM though. Awaiting a reply.
Cheers
EDIT:
Okay, I downloaded this iDroid ROM from here
My phone's kernel version says 2.6.35.7([email protected] #201209221033), but there's absolutely no change. Any ideas on what to do now? Still waiting for a reply. :-\

Well firstly ask why yourself why you want to flash a particular custom ROM? Does it have features you need etc? If not then stock is fine and there are many ways alter the appearance of your phone without flashing a new custom ROM via apps in the play store.
As always prior to flashing a custom ROM make sure you have all the tools and knowledge to flash back to stock if anything goes wrong. OK so by the sounds of it you have installed RB,s kernel but have not installed IDroid ROM, tell us how you tried to flash and that will give us more of an idea where you are going wrong.

Why the custom ROM: I was told by a friend (who uses a Galaxy Y) to use one, so as to make the phone less laggy. And I like to have my devices looking a little different from what everyone uses. Pardon me
EDIT: And yes, I do have the firmware required to flash back, as well as Odin. I've flashed before, so you could say I'm not a total waste there And I seem to have trouble understanding the difference between ROM and kernel.... could you please explain it to me? At least I'll know where I'm going wrong.

Kitt explain to us how you are doing your flashes and let us know what firmware your running. To advise we need as much info as you can give.

The standard procedure I follow:
1. Download the flashable zip to my phone SD card.
2. Reboot into stock recovery, enter clockworkmod through its zip file
3. Backup just in case, install the zip through cwm or stock recovery, whichever the dev advises
4. Reboot
Update: managed to get RazoDroid working. Firmware XXLD2, Rafael Baugis kernel (obviously, duh ) and no problems so far!
Just because you're probably not following the instructions correctly doesn't mean it's the developer's fault, and that you should be 'disappointed'.
True. I do my best to follow instructions, but I may have overlooked something somewhere. And no, I'm not blaming any devs, not intentionally anyway, because I don't have any rights to.... At the end of the day, I did manage to make something work, and now I'm happy with it, so all I can say is peace out
Running RazoDroid ROM on Rafael Baugis kernel, somehow managed through without bricking phone for the nth time
